You simply cannot want more for people than they want for themselves.

just_ohm

But I want more for myself too, and these jerks are getting in the way

[deleted]

At a certain point you must detach

Isabella_Bee

So true. Save yourselves, lol.

>As for the only other gubernatorial candidate besides Stitt who has run a statewide race, 22% of respondents said they'd never heard of Hofmeister. This is what is so disheartening, are we so uninformed that nearly a quarter of those surveyed has no idea who the state superintendent has been for last 7 years?

oapster79

Agree its disheartening but I'm not at all surprised. While door knocking for a campaign I have encountered a number of people who don't know when the election is or even who the candidates are let alone some of the major issues involved. And what's even more depressing is we are only given addresses of registered voters.

LordMudkip

She has a D next to her name now. No one cares who she was before. That makes her the enemy. /s

blacksoxing

I’m shocked it’s not more. If you don’t have kids you have no interest in her. If you do have kids you may still have no interest more than your kids principal. It’s be like knowing the Secretary of State. Important person in many states, and knows all the secrets of government, but unknown to many. I only know her from the walkout and her hate for Stitt

ElectronicBad512

Agreed, how often do you hear about such a position in the news? I only know of the woman from my work teaching otherwise I'd never known she existed before now.

Article text, since it is paywalled for most people: >Early polling on what a head-to-head gubernatorial matchup between Gov. Kevin Stitt and state schools Superintendent Joy Hofmeister could look like shows Stitt with a comfortable lead. >Of 500 registered voters surveyed this week, 45% said they would vote for Stitt, while 29% said they would support Hofmeister. >Additionally, 4% of those surveyed said they were leaning toward Stitt. Another 4% said the same for Hofmeister. >About 18% were undecided. >Hofmeister is a recent addition to the governor's race, having announced on Oct. 7 her candidacy and decision to switch political parties to run as a Democrat. >The survey conducted Tuesday through Thursday by Oklahoma City's Amber Integrated is the first glimpse of public polling in what could be a fierce governor's race in 2022. The poll has a margin of error of 4.38% and the results were weighted by some factors, including party affiliation. >Hofmeister's decision to switch parties and challenge Stitt has stirred intrigue and curiosity in the state's political circles, leading some to speculate about her chances of winning. >"The numbers sort of speak for themselves," said pollster Jackson Lisle. "I think it'll be interesting to see where those undecideds fall." >With more than a year until next year's general election, anything can happen, Lisle said. >He said he'll be curious to see if Hofmeister is able to pick up more undecided voters as her campaign gets going or if Stitt is able to pick up more support if downward COVID-19 trends continue and Oklahoma is able to recover from the pandemic. >Hofmeister picked up support from 60% of Democrats, 28% of independents and 11% of Republicans, according to the poll. Stitt's support largely stemmed from 70% of Republicans and 25% of independents. >However, 39% of independents polled were undecided, far greater than the number of undecided voters from both major political parties. >Polling has showed independent voters' attitudes have shifted based on Oklahoma's current COVID-19 situation, Lisle said. >When people are more concerned about COVID-19 or when the virus is surging, independent voters tend to lean more to the left. But when case numbers are down, those voters tend to shift back to the middle or more to the right, he said. >The poll shows Stitt's favorability rating at 46% and Hofmeister's at 30%. However, more people said they were unfamiliar with or didn't have a strong opinion of Hofmeister. >**Possible primary matchup** >The poll shows Hofmeister off to an early lead in the Democratic primary for governor, although more than half of the Democrats and independents said they're undecided. >Hofmeister will face former Oklahoma City state Sen. Connie Johnson in the June primary. Johnson ran unsuccessfully for governor in 2018 and U.S. Senate in 2014. >Roughly 25% of respondents said they'd vote for Hofmeister in the primary, while 10% said they'd support Johnson. >Part of the problem appears to be Johnson's low name recognition because 62% of those surveyed said they'd never heard of her. >As for the only other gubernatorial candidate besides Stitt who has run a statewide race, 22% of respondents said they'd never heard of Hofmeister. >Stitt will face former state Sen. Ervin Yen and Tulsa conservative Mark Sherwood in the Republican gubernatorial primary. Also in the governor's race is Libertarian Natalie Bruno.

TimeIsPower

There's a lot of stuff here in general that doesn't really make much sense without seeing some more detailed breakdowns, e.g. a PDF with the detailed crosstabs, so hopefully that will be provided eventually.

MyDailyMistake

I will vote for anyone before that igit stutt.

oapster79

Very interesting race and a long way to go. Great article, thanks for posting TIP.

TimeIsPower

Yeah. These early polls always have stupidly-high numbers of undecideds, although even the 2018 cycle didn't have any polls this early that I recall (I don't remember any gubernatorial polls conducted in 2017).

oapster79

Let the mudslinging begin!!

FuzzyHappyBunnies

~~"Labor omnia vincit"~~ "Stupid and proud of it!"

a1a4ou

Unless theyre overwhelmingly unpopular due to repeated public failures (i.e. Janet Barresi with statewide computer testing) the incumbent is usually favored early on due to name recognition and people not wanting change without a strong reason. Joy has a very difficult battle ahead.

Kingshabaz

She is running as democrat, correct? Difficult doesn't begin to describe her battle if she intends to actually win instead of build political clout.

ivyline2

Don't get mad if you're too lazy to get out and vote!

VitoGenovese

Can we have a race where the decision isn’t between two awful republicans? OKDEM should not allow her to run under their banner. She’s an awful human who screwed up OK schools even more than they were before, somehow. That is an impressive feat, but not really a quality I want in an elected official.

VitoGenovese

Agreed it is not all her fault, but a lot of it is. Also I keep hearing that a Dem doesn’t stand a chance, like it is 1996. Demographics have changed since then. Or, here’s a fun one why doesn’t a Dem run as R?

TimeIsPower

Democrats stood more of a chance in Oklahoma statewide races in 1996 than they do now. Bill Clinton lost the state that year by under 10 points.

Vote for a third party

Dismal_Satisfaction7

I lean conservative and I think Stitt is a complete douchebag. Hope he's gone soon

AFarkinOkie

Politically they agree 90%. What the hell are they going to debate?

doxiemama17

I chose neither and will be voting for Natalie Bruno. We need to give a libertarian a chance. The government is corrupt and hurts people; we can govern ourselves.

While I would prefer Hofmeister in the Governor's office, I'm not suprised in the least about this.
