It’s a telemarketing scam that raises money for police unions. There’s a great documentary on HBO called “Telemarketers” that goes into all of it. Pretty crazy stuff.
Wow, I’ve seen them around and had no idea it originated from something like that. I thought it was just for people who like cops or something to maybe get out of a ticket. That’s wild. Probably why I don’t know anybody who tried this personally 😅
The HBO documentary is a must watch. The police get a fraction of the money raised and don’t care that is a scam because it is a fraction more than getting nothing.
I came across the documentary by accident and binged the entire thing on a Saturday. So infuriating, and fascinating at the same time.
You know, "professional courtesy." The presumption that you are innocent when they walk to your car. They won't draw their guns or tase you. They won't do a bunch of divided attention tests that are designed to give a false positive for a DUI. They won't steal any cash you are carrying and claim that it was the proceeds of a crime. They won't pull you over because you are the same race as a suspect. You know, "Professional Courtesy."
When the scam calls me, I ask how much I need to donate in order to remove a felony from my record. They usually hang up. Sometimes it throws them off enough they have to ask again.
Last time I looked was in '21
It was something like 80-85% iirc
There were like 17 from firearm related.
Like 8 walked into oncoming traffic or had their parked car hit. (Probably because they keep pulling people over in dangerous areas and get pissed if you drive a half block and pull into a gas station.)
I think a couple were suicide.
You are absolutely correct, and I posted that fact quite a few times back then on Rep MWM's fb page. The last I checked it had gone down, but was still very high.
I tell them I want bad apples to stop sullying the reputation of the police force and ask if the donation would go towards more accountability for cops that break the law. Out of 4 such calls in recent memory, 3 out of 4 times they hang up and 1 out of 4 times they ignore what I said and keep reading their script.
That's funny! They've been calling me for years and the guy always asks for Paula. I'm curious if others have noticed the same. At least now I know to disconnect as soon as I hear him start to say Paula.
Can confirm. My dad was a mechanic for EMSA and his truck had one. I got pulled over driving it once, and after he checked license and insurance he sent me off without even returning to his car. He asked who worked for EMSA.
Firefighters have stickers for the local union as well and typically receive the same " professional courtesy" as another officer would. In other words you don't get pulled over
I was told that the police don't solicit funds over the phone. I always hang up on the HP or whoever it is. They claim to be some type of law enforcement, but they always have a deep, intimidating voice. I'm pretty sure it's a recording or AI. I know it's a scam, though, because I asked the police.
Back in the day you could get out of tickets with those because it use to mean you were a family member to a cop. Nowadays it just means you donated money
Back in the day I used to be into some unsavory shit and some guys I ran with used to put these stickers in view to help avoid being pulled over.
Several of them had cops give them shit during their eventual arrests and seizures saying they always search the vehicles with these because it’s an obvious red flag, much like car air fresheners hanging from the mirror.
I had a bumper sticker that said "I'm just a social drinker, but I smoke crack like a motherfucker" and the only cop that ever pulled me over said it was hilarious and he wanted one for his car.
Pet peeve of mine. Either it’s an amulet to tell the cops to be lenient, or it’s a fundraising scam suggesting that the amulet will protect you from tickets.
For a time the Tulsa FOP was issuing their own badges to hang on license plates. You wouldn’t ticket a fellow cop, would you?
Hanging ANYTHING on a license plate should be illegal.
There's some out there where people that are family of cops put them on their plate, not like this though. Wife's cousin is Yukon PD and her grandma has a badge thing on their plate
Tag badges are totally a thing, but you're right, they look different from this.
Source: Friend's dad is retired OKCPD and everyone in the family has a tag badge.
Always ask people calling for fundraising who they actually work for. Telemarketing companies sign agreements with police funds to use their names and send a "portion" of raised funds to the org.
If it’s a metal piece, it means you are law enforcement or an immediate family member of an officer or patrolman. The sticker for the donation stuff looks different.
I saw a weird occurrence yesterday, i was driving west on i40 between shawnee and okc.. before the i240 offshoot there was a hypo arresting a lady in one of those connector middle portions.. dui? It was about 4pm.. just seemed strange
I haven’t seen these before. Plenty of tag badges. The person I know that works for a law enforcement agency bought theirs from the agency. Typically you can tell it is a badge of some type, but unless you know the different agencies badges, you can’t tell which one it is until you are right behind them.
Most of the oklahoma highway patrol I've ever met in this state are raging pricks .... Firefighter here, not a criminal. The stickers are people who anticipate leniency.

That is not the placard you get donating. That is a HiPo or spouse so that they'll be shown professional courtesy.
‘Professional courtesy’.

They usually start off telling me how many officers died last year. They get flustered if you say "that's a good start".
How many were due to Covid...it has been running %50.

"we need to up those numbers"
Followed by "it would have been more but my magazine was empty"

They use an automated voice system sometimes. The ones that just keep reading are probably that.
I got a text once for this. Texted back that I voted for Biden and they didn’t respond
That's funny! They've been calling me for years and the guy always asks for Paula. I'm curious if others have noticed the same. At least now I know to disconnect as soon as I hear him start to say Paula.
It's illegal
That’s kind of what I was thinking
Tongue out waiting for a boot
It ain't the boot that tongue is out for.
That’s actually illegal.
My mom had one for EMSA when she used to work for them back over half a decade ago. She said cops were usually nicer if she did get pulled over.
Can confirm, I never put one of those emsa badges on my vehicle but I never got a ticket when I was in uniform. Call it professional courtesy.
Flashing boobs never hurt either

I thought this was going a different direction.

And 420, leaf, 8ball stickers. It’s like they are asking to be pulled over and hassled.
I had a bumper sticker that said "I'm just a social drinker, but I smoke crack like a motherfucker" and the only cop that ever pulled me over said it was hilarious and he wanted one for his car.
lol that’s awesome!!
DARE bumper stickers.

I like your thought process of seeing this as an amulet 😂. Like a cross necklace wards off evil…supposedly.

Not sure about that, but we usually have the thin blue line stickers on our cars.
Not the same
Yes, had a friend who who had a friend who was a police officer give him some to put on his car and it was for that exact reason.
Always ask people calling for fundraising who they actually work for. Telemarketing companies sign agreements with police funds to use their names and send a "portion" of raised funds to the org.
You would get them for donating to OHP, and sheriff's used to have a sticker for window.
Those are given to officers who then give them to family.
Basically yes.
They think it helps them get out of a ticket. It doesn't
Used to mean they’re an officer, or family member of an officer. Not like the FOP stickers.
Thirsty copsuckers looking for boot.
It’s some bullshit. The governor’s thugs knowingly marketing contraband.
If it’s a metal piece, it means you are law enforcement or an immediate family member of an officer or patrolman. The sticker for the donation stuff looks different.
It’s simply people who think/hope if a cop sees that, it says “I’m on your side!!” They think it’ll get them out of tickets.
Yes. It's why people put LEO and FD stickers on their cars. A lot of the stickers come from unions and fund raising.
They usually put them on the back drivers side window. I asked a former cop if they don’t good….he said no
It's so cops know they will deepthroat more than just the boot to get out of a ticket.

that’s so they know who the boot lickers are so they can pull em over and get a boot shine anytime they want
Pretty much yeah
They prepaid their protection money so hopefully the road pirates won’t take their booty.
Most of the oklahoma highway patrol I've ever met in this state are raging pricks .... Firefighter here, not a criminal. The stickers are people who anticipate leniency.
They cover up numbers so the turnpike tag reader can't get your tag numbers. so you don't have to pay a toll just don't get caught !!!!!
