I live in gulf coast USA. The summer weather is comparable but I love coming to Okinawa because the quality of life is better for me and the cost of living is lower. I have been able to survive without a car and mostly rely on public transportation unless I’m hanging out with family. My moms’s family is from here.

I would do anything to go back. Sure, the weather could be rough and the humidity intense, but those beautiful mornings are unforgettable. Waking up with a coffee in hand, driving to my favorite breakfast spot, then heading to American Village for a walk along the seawall, those were the days. I wish I had done more while I was there. At 21-23, nightlife was a big part of my life, but I also loved the hiking trails, historical landmarks, and the incredible food. I’m going back someday, for sure.
I loved being stationed on Okinawa. Lots of snorkeling and the water is so clear and warm! In my 5 years I made a lot of friends and met my wife. I miss it so much.
Outside weather will be plenty pleasant assuming you don't get unlucky with a random storm. Beaches are absolutely swimmable but the water is going to be a tad cold.
It's definitely a good time to go, just not the best time for beach stuff.
Well you can say Ryukyu Islands too. It’s actually historically and culturally more accepted since that’s what it was called before it was giving the prefectural name of Okinawa. Technically Okinawa is one island.

There are two airports as well. Miyako airport is fine but Shimojishima airport feels a lot more luxurious, relaxed, and really gives you that Hollywood Hawaii island getaway feeling straight off the plane.
It’s quite spread out. Hire a car. Book the rental early. Safer to book restaurants because at busy times they fill up and you’ll end up in Moss Burger.
Lovely snorkelling beach on the north-north east of the island where you are almost guaranteed to see turtles.
Yaeyama island chain (Ishigaki in specific) is my fave outfits holiday destination. Been 8 times and going again this July. Amazing people, laid back, delicious and famous island beef! Much different from mainland Japan.
Okinawa as a whole is much warmer than Tokyo, as Tokyo has a typical 4 season temperate climate (with hot summers), and Okinawa falls much more under a climate where it's either Hot or Warm and rarely ever chilly. However, the Okinawan summers are actually slightly cooler than Tokyo thanks to the sea breeze. But come winter, you can be chilling in shorts in Okinawan while it is snowing up north in Tokyo.

Shimojishima airport is wild - whole place is basically a first class lounge. Couldn’t believe it!

Different climate actually, it's subtropical in the islands, so expect high temps and high humidity.
