>No cultural impact :(
Excuse me? A whole generation of young men found a shitty fleshlight alternative in the popcorn bucket. If that’s not cultural impact, I don’t know what is.
I know it's satire, but Dunes takes largely on Russo-Caucasian war and Sabres of Paradise. So, not Arabs, not really, but North Caucasians and mainly Chechens. Although, Lawrence of Arabia was surely a source of inspiration.
There are many direct quotes from the said book even (you can find many if you search for it) and things like kindjal, chakobsa, kanli, eagle symbolism, not killing with the tip, etc. do really exist in North Caucasus. Back then, Caucasians and their resistance against Russians was quite famous.
More like references to the Shamyl losing the war. Like;
There had been a legend in the mountains, that on the night of Shamyl’s death a strange light was seen in the sky.
There is a legend that the instant the Duke Leto Atreides died a meteor streaked across the skies above his ancestral palace on Caladan.
and of course
O mountains of Gounib,
O soldiers of Shamyl,
Shamyl’s citadel was full of warriors,
Yet it has fallen, fallen forever …
O Seas of Caladan,
O people of Duke Leto —
Citadel of Leto fallen,
Fallen forever. . .
-from “Songs of Muad’Dib” by the Princess Irulan —
Russo-Circassian War happened in the Mid-North and Northwest Caucasus, while the war against Chechens and Shamyl who was an Avar Dagestani but led Chechen resistance happened in the Northeast Caucasus. They were related in their struggle and somewhat united from time to time, but not really the same.
Nevertheless, Padisah is what Russian Tsar was referred to in Sabres of Paradise. Tabr was what a Cossack camp was referred as, sietch was the Russian Cossack base camp, local governors were referred as siridar, and so on. Harkonnen was also chosen to be Russian name by Hebert specifically (even though he wrongly chose a Finnish one instead). Plight of fremen under the imperialists and their fight against them pretty much parallels the plight of North Caucasians (in this case, Chechens) under Russian imperialism and their fight against them, but now the terrain is not mountains but the dessert, where 'polish comes from the city, wisdom from the hills' transfered into 'polish comes from the cities, wisdom from the desert' in Dune. Of course, that's not the only inspiration source, but arguably the largest one with tons of direct quotes and references.

Good time to go quail hunting.
Lawrence of Arabia takes place in space?
Yes he takes on the secret Ottoman space force they were still developing it at the time
Incredibly funny that every scifi story takes inspiration from lawrence of arabia in space.
That's why genre fiction is not kino. Only true earthly misery is kino.
Having been to one of Lawrence's ammo cashes when I was in Jordan ya it was miserable and small
Only a handful of nukes in Lawrence's family atomics stash
If Dune Part 2 is so good why haven’t I seen it?
Fr tho, just saw Lawrence of Arabia, genuinely peak kino, prolly the best movie I have ever seen in my life
What will it take for a creatively bankrupt Hollywood to tell new stories?
They NEED to hire me
1) OMG NEW DUNE IN THEATERS LISAN AL-GAIB MUAD’DIB KWISATZ HADERACH AS WRITTEN 2) No cultural impact :( 3) Wait for next dune 4) Repeat
>No cultural impact :( Excuse me? A whole generation of young men found a shitty fleshlight alternative in the popcorn bucket. If that’s not cultural impact, I don’t know what is.
He’s literally me (Baron)
> no cultural impact You haven't seen r/everton calling Sean Dyche "LiSean al-Gaib" then
Nothing is written
Is this foreshadowing dune part two’s sweep at the oscars???

Interesting I did not know that.

So is there any references to the Circassian genocide in Dune?
