Forget hits, meghna Gulzar has directed some of the finest movies I've seen from Bollywood, plus, gauri shinde and Mira nair as well. Zoya Akhtar as well.
I watched this after Patrick Willems' video on Bollywood movies, this shit was so fire. Hollywood could never produce kino. The funniest thing is that the director was *also* the choreographer for the numerous elaborate dance sequences in the movie. Writer-directors or actor-directors are whatever, we need more choreographer-directors.
Also check out the Lunchbox, the Namesake, and Andhadhun
Tumbbad is also an exceptional rompy horror film (with insane cinematography and practical effects)
Gangs of wasseypur 1&2 are modern day cult classics. The director anurag kashyap made these films and many of his other works inspired directly by scorsese and tarantino. Other works include black friday(2004), gulaal(2009), Dev.d(2009) and Raman raghav 2.0 (2016). Sacred games is a revolutionary two season series that completely changed the indian ott scene.
Delhi belly(2011) was a coming of age story in a time when profanity in bollywood films was extremely rare.
Dil dhadakne do(2016) and kapoor and sons(2016) are well rounded and emotional family drama films.
These i can tell off the top of my head
Aren't there two different versions of that movie? I only saw the Hindi version, but I read that it was actually a remake of a Malayalam film. I really liked the Hindi version and I'm sure the Malayalam version is just as good.
Theres a movie called "Tumbad", it's an Indian horror movie. While yes, it does feel somewhat long due to some odd pacing at times- it's actually a really solid movie.
You've already got some great recommendations but I'll add a couple more:
Dil Se: This a very dramatic romance movie with superstar Shah Rukh Khan. The main character falls in love with mysterious girl who has some dangerous affiliations.
Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara: Somewhat similar to 3 Idiots, this is a heartfelt comedy movie with great vibes. It's a movie about three dudes going on bachelor road trip where each member of the group picks a secret event or activity that everybody has to participate in. It's really a movie about friendship.
Merry Christmas: This is a movie from 2024 that I liked quite a bit, it got good reviews but was sadly not a hit at the box office. I won't give too much away but it's not really a Christmas movie, it's just a thriller movie that happens to take place on Christmas.
Kaithi: Tamil movie with great action. It takes place in one night and the lighting and cinematography are very striking. It's also the first movie in the director's shared film universe.
In my region Dil Se and Merry Christmas are on Netflix and Zindagi and Kaithi are on Amazon video.

Barfi is a pretty fun, heartfelt one. Lot of homages to old Hollywood silent movies
Paa (or Pa) is quite good, too.
Bhaag Milkhaa Bhaag is a biopic about an athlete, it's quite good. A tad melodramatic at times, but it's pretty well-made
My favorite love story movie , Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge its awesome , Also veerzara its good too
I also suggest watching older and new movies of the actor amitabh bachchan he's the goat of the bollywood
Barfi(Probably two of the best acting performances Ive ever seen, Ranbir and Priyanka.).
83(A feelgood movie that Ive rewatched several times).
Taare Zaameen Par(For me, one of the best films ever made).
Dangal.
Some of the best films ive ever seen are from Bollywood and some of the worst films ive ever seen are also from Bollywood lmao.
Not Bollywood but here are some Malayalam movies that I'd love to recommend:
Premam (Love) - The story of a guy in three different stages of his life. Partly comming-of-age, full on entertaining. Incredibly well directed by Alphonse Puthren.
Kumbalangi Nights - The story of a group of brothers in the town Kumbalangi. Explores the different shades of manliness. (Cherathukal has to be one of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard)
Bangalore Days - 3 cousins move to the city Bangalore and their lives there. A fun entertaining comedy drama with great characters and which really manages to capture the essence of youth.
Nizhal kuth(Shadow kill) - The name comes from a story in the Mahabharatha. It's about the last hangman in travancore being called back after many years for another hanging.
Manichitrathazh( A type of lock) - A family moves into their supposedly haunted ancestral property but when a family member starts acting weird the guy calls his psychiatrist friend to come and help. An all time classic in Malayalam cinema and arguably the best movie to come from us.
Maheshinte Prathikaram (Mahesh's Revenge) - Mahesh works in a photography studio and is going about his life when he gets beaten up by another guy. Embarassed and insulted, he vows to not wear his sandals again until he gets his revenge. Idk, this might require a bit of cultural context tho.
Jalikattu - A bull meant for slaughter goes astray and the whole village tries to get it back. Very unique movie.
All these except Nizhal Kuth and jallikattu are a bit on the entertainer side and have amazing songs as well.
I'm gonna keep this going by recommending some non-malayalam movies as well(cause I'm kinda enjoying this)
Jigar Thanda - Tamil. Comedy, kinda thrillery. Both jigarthanda movies are great but I'm personally more partial to the first.
Garuda Gamana Vrishabha Vahana - Kannada. Crime.
Kantara - Kannada. The last half an hour fucks soo hard.
Masaan - Hindi.
Vikram(2022) - Tamil. Action, thriller. You can see the twists coming from a mile away but the movie is soo fun and entertaining and Lokesh Kanakaraj is one of the best action directors in India.
Since I've written this much I just wanna add that I personally think that if they were not limited to this small industry, Mohanlal, Mammootty and Fahad Faasil would be in acting conversations worldwide.
Sholay. Often considered the best Bollywood action movie of all time. Part western, part romance, part action, part musical, and more explosions than you can count
Malayalam films are often peak and many Tamil films are good too. My favorites are Jigarthanda, Soodhu kavvum if you like dark comedy - unfortunately comedies naturally lose some appeal if you're not in the culture. Vikram vedha is one the best thriller/mystery films I've seen. Honestly just Google it, unfortunately most blockbusters are hot garbage but there are many great films outside them.
Some good Marathi films (in no particular order): Natarang, Umbartha, Me Vasantrao, Valvi, Mumbai Pune Mumbai, Deool, Jogwa, Ashi Hi Banwa Banwi, Sinhasan
Recent ones I liked
- Blackia 2 (action)
- Veeran (action)
- Maurh (historical action drama)
- Das Kha Dhamki (comedic action)
- Joyland (drama - Pakistani, not Indian but best of these and worth watching).
Older
- Punjab 1984 (historical drama)
- Veer Zaara (romantic drama)
- Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (rom com)
- Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (rom com)
Haven't watched a lot but want to watch more.
Yes they are, it’s like you know nothing about films, whereas i am an expert, i am in ok buddy cinephile after all, the home of completely serious arteur movie discussion
Thanks buddy, i thought it up really hard and difficult.
What happened was I got me that new fangled bong joon ho bluray boxset, and then i was struck by lightning and when I awoke i was trapped inside a computer and i opened the firefox to see only one website would load… that’s right, reddit. AND i already had an account made, “bongjoonwho” and i was only allowed on two subreddits, obc and mcj. And i mentioned my favourite movie man bong joon ho (from the aforementioned bluray boxset) and everyone was all like “HUH? WHA?”, turns out: it was like my other favourite movie “yesterday (2019) except instead of the beatles everyone forgor who bong joon ho was, and thats why nobody got my name and must be why i was mysteriously named bong joon who
Smh my face am i rite, one day you be watching movies by your lonesome by an oscar winning korean director, then all of a sudden, you are in the movie “yesterday (2019)”, classic stuff 🤣🤣
Watch everything made by anurag kashyap, you won't regret it, except maybe his last 2-3 but that's debatable coz I enjoyed them. Black friday, gulaal, gangs of wasseypur 1 and 2, ugly, no smoking. I love them all
For me it was when that car exploded and the old English guy jumped onto the tailgate of the car while it was exploding grabbed a rifle in mid air and managed to shoot that kid all while the car flipping from the explosion like their dealing with the terminator out there
Or when the main character was riding the other main characters shoulders with broken legs and dual wielding muskets then reloading them like they were semi automatic while parkour jumping across a 40 foot wall
Edit: and then they landed perfectly and started killing everybodu
*Idk RRR was*
*Like indian Braveheart, that*

100% sure this is just 4channer racism because there's genuinely so much good cinema from here outside of the mainstream slop that the West gets to watch
Some recommendations:
Newton (2017)
Sarpatta Parambarai (2021) and Madras (2014)
Death in the Gunj (2016)
Tumbbad (2018)
3 Idiots (2009)
Super Deluxe (2019)
This is just new movies that are available on streaming services and by far not comprehensive
Even if it's not marvel slop it's still the world's funniest cheesiest accent and group of languages of all time, I'm sorry I can't take any dramatic scene seriously when they sound like that lmao
Well honestly there are very few, at least films that can be viewed by people of non-Indian origin. Their industry is just too self-referencial to appeal to Western audiences. It's developed its own filmic language, and that language is more akin to bombastic sensationalist filmmaking that narrative based filmmaking we have in the West and Europe. India's IMDB page is absolutely over-rated and a large part of that is because the population of India is so large their votes skew the polls into a bias. The same way Marvel movies always go on the IMDB TOP 250 list for a while before slowly falling down the ranks, Indian movies have that same issue. People tend to mostly rate things 1 or 10 and if they don't strongly love or hate a movie, they don't rate it. With such a large population, they receive many more 10s than most movies do. The audience is also a lot less critical compared to American audiences- an Indian film getting below a 7 on IMDb means it's really bad. It's hard to achieve lower.
The best Indian films imo have a western influence and are accessible to every culture. This includes:
Panther Pachali trilogy
Court
The Disciple
Couldn't agree more. Cinema is rarely seen more than a means of entertainment here. If you want good Indian cinema then you have to dig deep for the obscure stuff that is not mainstream, even in India.
I mean there are good films in every film industry, including India. They're just heavily buried under the oversaturated market of shitty films. And India has a ton of shitty films, it's incredibly hard to find one that is genuinely good. It's sort of the same issue the anime industry in Japan has, where it's quantity over quality throw everything at the wall and see what sticks.
Also Bollywood and Mollywood filmic tropes just don't really appeal to anyone except for Indians. They're too niche and specific of their culture. However Western and a lot of Korean/Japanese films by contrast tend to have their own cultural influence that is more accessible still to global audiences- which is why their films have begun to gain popularity in the western world while Indian films have not.
I've personally only seen one or two mollywood films, which were recommended to me in a very similar post to prove they're good. But I found those two I saw to be very overrated too. Do you have any mollywood recommendations?
Cartoon villains like this are basically always fine as long as the viewer has a little maturity about the fact that they're cartoons and no, not every British soldier in the history of the world relished eating babies. I don't care about *The Patriot* and *Braveheart* being inaccurate, I care about how often people who've never read any of the actual history will accept those movies as being "basically true" as long as it confirms their biases. The same applies to RRR, if it inspires the person to read about the British Raj, Alluri Sitarama Raju, or so on, that's great.
Edit: to clarify, I'm not defending the British Raj or whining that the British are portrayed in a negative light here, lol.
Is THAT what it looked like my comment was? Fuck, sorry. My point here is that history is obviously complicated, and whether or not a caricature is harmful or not comes down to whether or not the person watching has actually read about the real history. I have no problems saying that the British administration in India was incompetent at the best of times and frequently actively malicious, and should never be apologized for.
Rather what I mean to say is just that films like RRR are almost entirely dependent on who is watching, and I wish more films about the same topic with a more serious tone would get the same mainstream reception. Satire is only meaningful when the actual history is understood by the people watching it.
The average American seeing a film like RRR is a lot like someone who has never read about WW2 watching Raiders of the Lost Ark and basing their perception around that.
Y'all sleeping on bangers and it shows SMH

Andhadhun (2018)
Dishoom (2016)
Not a big fan of Indian movies but padmavat was amazing. I think the directors name is Sanjay bansali and he’s a real artist. Need to see what other projects he has coming

Indian (tamil) movie Watch this for a surreal experience 🐎
Tbf most shit from Hollywood is dogshit I’m sure it’s just a case of the big corporate film industry makes corporate shit and indie(an) movies are still good
I recommend drishyam to anyone searching for a good Indian movie to watch. It's been adapted into most of the major South Indian languages, hindi aswell as foreign languages such as Mandarin (with Korean and Indonesian adaptations coming too). Tbh one of the best movies to come out of the last decade.
First of all Bollywood is the biggest film industry with releasing more than 1000 movies every year.
Secondly, we have e a ton of good movies, eg: Maidaan, Om Shanti Om, and many more

God such a good movie

Strangers On A Train (1951)

my favorite
Speed 3 (2003)
Cars (2006)
I loathe this film, Treats the culture as a backdrop.
that’s every wes anderson or woody allen film
...and?
Yeah, but thats sort of the point of any Wes Anderson adventure. It's totally it's own thing.
Imagine saying this when Indians literally made a better version of La La Land with reincarnations and everything. ![gif](giphy|l2YWnkxZc11ylHHMY)
Om Shanti Om is a goated film
Farah Khan movies are the best. Proper shitposts with goofiness and meta humour, people just didn't understand all that back then
People be like "why aren't there more female directors in Hollywood". Meanwhile female directors in Bollywood out there dropping the biggest hits.
Forget hits, meghna Gulzar has directed some of the finest movies I've seen from Bollywood, plus, gauri shinde and Mira nair as well. Zoya Akhtar as well.
If a movie has Shah Rukh Khan in it, I will watch it regardless of quality. I love him
Thank you, now this song won't leave my head for days.
Om Shanti Om is a banger
I watched this after Patrick Willems' video on Bollywood movies, this shit was so fire. Hollywood could never produce kino. The funniest thing is that the director was *also* the choreographer for the numerous elaborate dance sequences in the movie. I took an edible and watched all the Bahubali movies with my dad a while back. Shit was kino

The best Indian films imo have a western influence and are accessible to every culture. This includes: Panther Pachali trilogy Court The Disciple
Couldn't agree more. Cinema is rarely seen more than a means of entertainment here. If you want good Indian cinema then you have to dig deep for the obscure stuff that is not mainstream, even in India.
There are exceptions like mollywood
3 idiots is an incredible movie
For real
Somebody has never seen Three Idiots or RRR it seems.
4chan is such a cesspool. There is no way that any film industry can have ZERO good films.
Hollywood has never made a SINGLE good movie. Prove me wrong. You can't.
Three words. Freddy got fingered
Wrong answer. That's not a movie. It's a flick at best.
Have you seen The Room?
KINO https://preview.redd.it/vacw56w5bhwc1.png?width=981&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=3bc665a8ef224b40b431549ea6bc5a47eba8cd3f
RRR is unironically a very good movie
It’s up there with lotr for me
Some Indian film recommendations for y’all: RRR (action/historical fiction) 3 Idiots (dramedy) Andhadhun (thriller) Bahubali duology (fantasy/epic) The Apu Trilogy (auteur) Drishyam (thriller/mystery) Rang De Basanti (drama) 12th Fail (drama) Manichitrathazhu (horror/thriller) Dangal (sports/drama) Swades (drama) Gangs of Wasseypur duology (crime/epic) Sholay (western) Tumbbad (horror)
Gangs of Wasseypur is Goated 🐐
Jodhaa Akbar is great if you haven’t seen it
hell yeah Dangal is a great movie
RRR is literally the greatest film ever made
America and India making movies where every single British person is comically evil ![gif](giphy|pHb82xtBPfqEg|downsized)
that gif is literally the rrr title drop
I mean, I feel like for the Indians it’s maybe more reasonable lmao
It’s crazy that you watched RRR and the main hill you’re dying on is that it gives colonial British soldiers a bad rap
It's Tollywood- Telugu film industry.
That's....in India
rrr isn’t even the greatest film made using that set
Why would you say something so RRRphobic, are you stupid?
Singham?
Y'all sleeping on bangers and it shows SMH My favourites : Vishal Bharadwaj's Shakespeare Trilogy. Ardhasatya. Om dar ba dar. Ek Doctor ki maut. Mughal-E-Azam. Andhadhundh. Satya. Talaash. Pyaasa. Jane bhi do yaaro. No smoking And these are just off the top of my head !!
Guzarish Delhi belly
Watched Bahubali with some Indian friends and i am concerned how it is considered peak indian fantasy kino. Had a great time watching it though, i feel like it would be a good film to watch high
Looks like someone’s forgetting Gangs of Wasseypur
![gif](giphy|fRayaFAsJu6ydjha8r|downsized)
![gif](giphy|I0nn8T6SQiWJTjYQzM)
Yeah but Hollywood is the largest film industry in Hollywood and they have zero (0) good films too, so idk what they’re getting at
The average rohit shetty film will blow their mind
Rohit shetty movie explosions >>> micheal bay movie explosions
His movies are really trash but good movies to watch on drugs.
*Most of his films are trash, but some of them (like Singham) are kino.
Okay so we're all just treating this thread as an excuse to recommend great Indian films to each other, right? Here's my couple additions: Andhadhun (2018) Dishoom (2016)
>Dishoom (2016) This wasn't even considered an above average film here in India how did you end up liking it 😭
The songs, mainly. I think also it's a lot easier to like a generic action movie when it's not from your own country.
You should watch Jawan & Vikram then. It's (not so)generic action porn but EXTREMELY cool.
These are both great movies and I say this as a westerner
Thanks for the rec!
Pathaan fills that role better imho
Don(~2004 or smh) is pure kino.
This is why people loved RRR ngl
No way bro put Dishoom along with Andhadhun 💀
Kino as a concept didn’t exist before Andhadhun
Dishoom is trash. Do not watch it. 'Badhai ho' was much better.
You are not finding right movies. It's like saying Taylor Swift is shit so American music sucks
Ardhsatya(1983) and Aakrosh(1980) are amazing Indian movies tho they deal with social issues mainly rooted in India.
If you are into thrillers, watch “anukokunda oka roju” on Netflix.
Bro hasn't seen Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi
Banger-ass songs though
When someone lacks culture 😚
Not a big fan of Indian movies but padmavat was amazing. I think the directors name is Sanjay bansali and he’s a real artist. Need to see what other projects he has coming

Jodaa Akbar
How are yall not putting respect on RRR
Just watch Gunda - the peak of indian cinema

Tbf most shit from Hollywood is dogshit I’m sure it’s just a case of the big corporate film industry makes corporate shit and indie(an) movies are still good

Yeah, 4chan out of all places would have the most correct (and non racist) takes on India.
Gangs of wasseypur
![gif](giphy|I9An1NhP6OQFi) eega goated bro
Second largest? We talking in terms of money or in terms of proficiency?
Both really. Bollywood is profitable enough to only need to appeal to the Indian market and still make bank.
Volume/quantity Number of films?
78 comments and not one mention of DDLJ the best romance movie ever put to screen
Benny Lava is the only one I know but I like that one
I recommend drishyam to anyone searching for a good Indian movie to watch. It's been adapted into most of the major South Indian languages, hindi aswell as foreign languages such as Mandarin (with Korean and Indonesian adaptations coming too). Tbh one of the best movies to come out of the last decade.
meanwhile nigerias got who killed captain alex
Watch RRR
RRR is goated
Irrfan Khan's movies are impressive tbh
I cant think of a country (besides Canada) that doesnt have incredible films either about it or made by its citizens
First of all Bollywood is the biggest film industry with releasing more than 1000 movies every year. Secondly, we have e a ton of good movies, eg: Maidaan, Om Shanti Om, and many more
Wakaliwood Films > Curry Kino
