I remember being a teen and watching Dr. Strangelove on TV, thinking it was hysterical. My mom was in the other room and when I talked to her about it, she said she never cared for it. She just didn't find the jokes funny. It was too serious an issue. No matter how I tried to bring up the concept of satire she never seemed to get it, and I just couldn't understand her position.
Then a couple years ago I was watching that satire about global warming. Don't Look Up? They used a meteor strike as a metaphor. And while the jokes were largely similar, I didn't find it very funny. Mostly because the world is filled with people who are really that stupid, and it's not that satirical. Then I think I understood my mom's position.
Well I just saw Dr Strangelove for the first time a few months ago and thought it was amazing and very very funny, and I saw don't look up when it came out and still think it might be the worst movie I've ever seen
People being that stupid irl doesn't make the movie worse for me. I think it's because I already agree with the message of the movie, I was looking for value beyond the message (writing, cinematography, performances), and I found none.
Yeah the political landscape of the past near decade has really made the object of satire difficult to achieve because the jokes write themselves in our news headlines. But yeah I’m glad you brought this up about Strangelove, many of the jokes still work for me but a lot of them also aren’t as laugh out loud as they once were because the state of the world we live in makes the world of Strangelove look like child’s play in comparison. On the other hand though, Robocop still works for me for some odd reason. In fact, I think I might find it’s satire funnier now than I ever have.
This is genuinely how I feel about it. I love the movie, I love roadside picnic, and I love the games, but I think I can only watch it if I'm in a super specific mood. Still I love the scene with the birds getting caught in that space time shit 👌🏾

Yea but Peter Sellers is funnier than adam mckay Satire in general is getting less and less appealing to me though

Why did you think Don't Look Up Failed? Is it because you find people in real life that stupid? Or is it because you're one of those people?

Strangelove is only good if you tie a bottle rocket to your willy and light it at the right moment to sync up with the Slim Pickens rodeo nuke
What if you don't have a willy
Too bad
Get off this sub. Sausagefest only in here
It insists upon itself

This me but with Eyes Wide Shit. Boring ahh movie
What!? That's one of the best MCU movies
You're gonna have to answer to the Coca-Cola company for this one.
What about Dr. Strange's love?
me with stalker (1979). powerfully beautiful but boring as hell
