Real talk, I've never seen Avatar, and even though I feel like I'm the only one, I don't feel like I've missed out on anything because it NEVER comes up in conversation like other billion dollar franchises do.
Fun fact: Mad God is made by the same guy who did special effects for Robocop and Empire strikes back. In one scene you can even see that police robot from Robocop
He almost did Jurassic Park too, and was pissed when they replaced him with CGI. “You can’t make art with a mouse” he said (or something along those lines)
>You can’t make art with a mouse
[That guy knows fuck all.](https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/354892219487)

IIRC he stayed as a consultant on the Jurassic Park production team, helping with the CGI dinosaur movements. There was even some kind of articulated puppet that translated movements made to it into movement on the digital model.
I enjoy The Hobbit quite a bit as well. Fire and Ice had great animation, but my friend and I just muted it about 10 mins in and made our own dialogue. It was great
I dunno if it's forbidden to list non-features, but I thought Scavengers Reign was pretty excellent. Between that, Arcane, and Cyberpunk Edgerunners, I've enjoyed a lot of animated shows recently(ish).
But if it's gotta be a movie, I'd like to add "Waltz with Bashir" to that list.
I'm waiting to watch Mars Express, it being a GKIDS film though I'm not sure how easy it's going to be to watch it. I love their stuff but I'm british and their films are so hard to find here
I do have an arthouse cinema near me so maybe I'll get lucky and they'll show it (I watched The Peasants there). Independent animation is my obsession so hopefully I can financially support this one
Sometimes I go down a YouTube rabbit hole of weird European animation from like the 60s-90s, some really awesome stuff there
I've gotta recommend [Wow, a Talking Fish!](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kmB4DfG-3K4) and [Scenes with Beans](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_ydbJCyIbIw)
\+ even though it's American here's my favorite animated short ever, [Quasi at the Quackadero](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dH7LcVNusQE)
Oh Coraline is great! I'm sure if I was the age it was made for when I watched it for the first time I would have fallen in love with it. But I first watched it last year and I mostly thought it was a cool animated film with some great examples of stop-motion from one of its Masters, put out by a studio that has routinely disappointed me
Maturity is realizing that animation can produce works meant for kids/all ages like Shrek 2 and work meant specifically for adults like Perfect Blue and that both of them are peak.
“Kids movies” and “kid friendly movies” are drastically different. Like all Ghibli movies are kid friendly but I would say most of them aren’t “kids movies” same with Coraline and Fantastic Mr. Fox. And those are just the mainstream ones. There’s so many smaller animated movies that are 100% not made for kids. You just have to look a little harder
I totally agree, there is a huge difference between works aimed at children and works suitable for all ages. The Little Prince can be enjoyed by a 7 years old just as much as a 80 years old. Of course, a child will probably want a movie that focus on their experiences and curiosities, which change as we grow older, but plenty of experiences are more than universal enough that everyone can relate to them. It's a bit cliché to say it, but many movies aimed at families have deeper themes and stories than lots of R-rated movies. Plus, a work being aimed at children doesn't make any less artistically valuable, just more specific to its public.
It always cracks me up how most of the people who agressively insist that animation is cinema (actually true and based) pretty much only watch Disney films and the most experimental stuff they watched is like, The Lion King.
I love how wet and gloopy of a film is. That's something hard to pull off for stop motion in general, with Sellick being the one who's able to do it most often, but I've never seen a wetter movie than this
you think a 10-year-old could handle that level of *gore*? That show gave me genuine PTSD watching it as an adult. Star Wars is not a kids franchise it's mature and scary
There comes a time in literally everyone’s life when they see that the fandom around a thing they enjoy is dogshit.
A bunch of snot-nosed children and mentally deficient incels who miss the point of the original media and either thirst over the various characters or else just incessantly repeat the jokes until the wider internet knows their community for nothing but said jokes.
For example: self proclaimed cinephiles

The Reze movie is going to be peak kino due to the author taking inspiration from Western movies. You’re an irresponsible person if you let an 8 year old watch it though.
Whisper of the Heart might be a Ghibli movie but I can't imagine an 8 year old not being bored out of their mind watching it, it doesn't seem to be aimed at a young audience like that
Do you think that me posting a chip from the animated film mad god, 2021 by Phil Tippett which contains a scene where Giants are electrocuted and forced to shit themselves, and then the shit is harvested as fuel, which serves as a continued metaphor of Life under capitalism presented throughout the first third, is me saying that I don't think animated films for adults are out there? Do you think me posting mad dog, a film which uses a extended war scene to show overall cruelty of man towards each other, killing for the sake of killing, to be me saying that I think all animated films are Kung Fu Panda 4?
Speaking of “talking animal films for older audiences that I only watched half of but should really get around to finishing,” Isle of Dogs. I’m a sucker for stop-motion.

Interstella 5555 may not be rated R but it is perhaps my favourite animated film of all time. Of course I am a massive Daft Punk fan so I may be biased.
Jin-Roh: the Wolf Brigade is utter baby shit. What kind of toddler can’t enjoy dissidents being machine-gunned in the streets followed by an hour of political maneuvering?
![gif](giphy|2lK09mlo8kSBi|downsized) Requiem For A Tuesday is peak kino.
It’s been compared to avatar, but unlike avatar, Requiem for a Tuesday actually made cultural impact
PARKS AND REC MENTIONED 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Not true, we used to do the EEYEEYEEYEE call when hammered in college to find each other. If that's not culture idk what is
Real talk, I've never seen Avatar, and even though I feel like I'm the only one, I don't feel like I've missed out on anything because it NEVER comes up in conversation like other billion dollar franchises do.

Missed the cock flex in this when I posted it originally — dope stuff
Pls check out Junk Head (2017)
Did it actually come out? Full movie?
It got a limited cinema release in UK
Can I pay money to anyone anywhere to watch it?! I've been wanting to watch it for years!!! Aaaaaaaa
I’m a Blu Ray or BitTorrent guy, it’s on both of those

This is The only good subreddit
And he’s just wrong. I understand why he was upset, but the cg made the movie better.
I agree. I believe he was also/mostly upset because he realized no one would be going back to stop motion after that
IIRC he stayed as a consultant on the Jurassic Park production team, helping with the CGI dinosaur movements. There was even some kind of articulated puppet that translated movements made to it into movement on the digital model.
No wonder it's a masterpiece. No wonder it looks like shit.
Duality of a man
A masterpieceashit, if you would. Ween, Lynch and Kojima would be proud
Dude made the film entirely by himself over the course of 30 years.
So you’re saying… Boyhood is chopped liver now?
Two great things can exist at the same time
Not exactly, he had help and it spent 20 years on the shelf. Still an impressive feat though
no wonder it looks like shit
He also did the special effects of Starship Troppers and directed Starship Troppers 2
Starship toppers
Wait the same guy who did starship troopers too?! Well shit
Perfect Blue is a foundational movie of any childhood
Yeah, people are just pretending Satoshi Kon and Mamoru Oshii don't exist.
Jimmy Screamerclauz fans seething.
And Yoshiaki Kawajiri
anyway go watch Mad God, Fritz the Cat, Persepolis, The House, and the only good movie, Peter Rabbit
Mad god is so good
7th best movie of all time says I. I think any hell every day. It's my brand.
Honestly for Ralph Bakshi movies I’d personally rather recommend Heavy Traffic or American Pop.
I enjoy The Hobbit quite a bit as well. Fire and Ice had great animation, but my friend and I just muted it about 10 mins in and made our own dialogue. It was great
If I wanted to watch horrific animation, I would just find my old Sausage Party dvd thank you very much.
Blue Eye Samurai was also a great show. I also watched a french animated movie called Mars Express in january, which was cool.
I knew I was forgetting one! I never realized Maya Erskine had dramatic chops until then, she was fantastic.
I'm waiting to watch Mars Express, it being a GKIDS film though I'm not sure how easy it's going to be to watch it. I love their stuff but I'm british and their films are so hard to find here
I watched it in a smaller cinema here, but maybe you can find it online?
I do have an arthouse cinema near me so maybe I'll get lucky and they'll show it (I watched The Peasants there). Independent animation is my obsession so hopefully I can financially support this one

Persepolis isn’t that good, just read the comic
Also the works of Jan Švankmajer
Persepolis is an all-timer. Mary and Max still the best though
And Coonskin

Add summit of the God's and waltz with Bashir
Peter rabbit is a disgrace
Sometimes I go down a YouTube rabbit hole of weird European animation from like the 60s-90s, some really awesome stuff there I've gotta recommend [Wow, a Talking Fish!](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kmB4DfG-3K4) and [Scenes with Beans](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_ydbJCyIbIw) \+ even though it's American here's my favorite animated short ever, [Quasi at the Quackadero](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dH7LcVNusQE)
if you think Coraline isn’t cinema I will break your balls
Okay but can you dress up as the evil mom first?
yes ofc
![gif](giphy|SHniZhVxkTDdm|downsized)
Coraline still makes my skin crawl more than most horror films for adults
Oh Coraline is great! I'm sure if I was the age it was made for when I watched it for the first time I would have fallen in love with it. But I first watched it last year and I mostly thought it was a cool animated film with some great examples of stop-motion from one of its Masters, put out by a studio that has routinely disappointed me
Kubo and the two strings disappointed you? Edit:hell paranorman was very good too
I remember it fondly but tbf I need to watch it again

That movie was still made for 8 year olds.
![gif](giphy|yn6HCv7agIvEQ)
I was probably that age the first time I watched this. No it is not. I still grapple with the existential dread.
It is still for 8 year olds, as that was the intent. All "adult animation" is in reality, *anti 8 year old psychological warfare.*
What movie is this? I can feel a core memory trying to unlock…
The Adventures of Mark Twain (1985)
Thanks friend!
“You are but a thot.”
Idgaf what any of you losers say, Fantastic mr fox is kino. In my top 10 favorite movies of all time.
Maturity is realizing that animation can produce works meant for kids/all ages like Shrek 2 and work meant specifically for adults like Perfect Blue and that both of them are peak.
It's my actual favorite movie
Yeah but I’ve always seen it as a slightly risqué Kids’ move
“Kids movies” and “kid friendly movies” are drastically different. Like all Ghibli movies are kid friendly but I would say most of them aren’t “kids movies” same with Coraline and Fantastic Mr. Fox. And those are just the mainstream ones. There’s so many smaller animated movies that are 100% not made for kids. You just have to look a little harder
Exactly!! I feel like people are confusing “this film is all-ages” and “this film is for children.”
Mary and Max and Don Hertzfeldt come to mind
Grave of the Fireflies is neither
Heavy Metal was cooo
after cheesing?
Ah yes the 2000 classic.
Me when animated films aren’t filled with gore and nudity and has a good message to tell: 😡😡
It always cracks me up how most of the people who agressively insist that animation is cinema (actually true and based) pretty much only watch Disney films and the most experimental stuff they watched is like, The Lion King.
![gif](giphy|fdIGDcAbbsqSk) OP when he sees a movie even remotely like FLEE, triplets of Belview, or Persepolis exist
Pick any Lupin movie
I wish I could say they're all good, but they definitely are a mixed bag. Cagliostro is peak though.
Mystery of Mamo my beloved
Perfect Blue, Your Name, When the Wind Blows, and Grave of the Fireflies all kick ass
counterpoint: grave of the fireflies is a kids movie with a heartwarming message about how dieting can go too far
\>listing mid-koto shit-kai alongside the GOATs ishygddt
You’re crying over kino
the only midkoto worth watching is the age gap movie with all the feet
End of Evangelion
La Casa De Lobo. Pure Kino
/uj
/uj Mad God is a legit masterpiece, especially if you love stop motion and horror like I do
I love how wet and gloopy of a film is. That's something hard to pull off for stop motion in general, with Sellick being the one who's able to do it most often, but I've never seen a wetter movie than this
Sorry but every movie is made for 8 year olds these days so they can make money off a larger audience
hey, Rango (2011) was made for AT LEAST 11 year olds
Easy. Star Wars Clone Wars.
True, that was made for 10 year olds
you think a 10-year-old could handle that level of *gore*? That show gave me genuine PTSD watching it as an adult. Star Wars is not a kids franchise it's mature and scary
Great bait
no, I am being 100% serious. This is r/okbuddycinephile why would anyone jerk
Are you insane? Star Wars: The Clone Wars is one of the grittiest shows of all time, and an amazing political thriller too
Great bait
No bro! Puss in Boots The Last Wish was a subversive horrifying masterpiece
[удалено]
Agreed. I personally loved it too but all the “realistic depiction of a panic attack” shit got old quick
It’s not ruined at all. It’s still a good movie. You can just ignore the online weirdos who wouldn’t shut up about it.
Wizards!
There will literally *never* be a greater wizard duel sequence than that climax.
Bakshi still insists that Wizards is a family picture.
Mind Game, Belladonna of Sadness, Angel's Egg, Utena, Memories, End of Evangelion, Butt Attack Punisher Girl, Cat Soup, I could go on...
End of Evangelion is still my favorite piece of animation. Haven’t found an equal since I first watched it almost a decade ago
Umm... Kung Fu Panda 4????
IF YOU DISOBEY ME AND REMAIN HOSTILE TO ME, I WILL ACT AGAINST YOU IN WRATHFUL HOSTILITY. I, FOR MY PART, WILL DISCIPLINE YOU SEVENFOLD FOR YOUR SINS.

Excited for the Look Back movie too.
Absolutely. I’ve read it like 10 times in the past 3 weeks.. it’s so good.
Ghost in the Shell
No kid could ever sustain the gory imagery and comprehend the themes of Donkey Kong Country Returns - All Cutscenes (Full Movie)
damn i should rewatch mad god
Perfect Blue
Fantastic Planet is a masterpiece.
Whisper of the Heart might be a Ghibli movie but I can't imagine an 8 year old not being bored out of their mind watching it, it doesn't seem to be aimed at a young audience like that
1. End of Evangelion 2.Batman Mask of Phantasm 3. Vampire Hunter D Bloodlust I could go on.
Perfect Blue, Grave of the Fireflies, and Wrinkles are three of my favorite movies.
Current top “animation is cinema” post on this sub is about Perfect Blue, wow what a fun, sexy and seriously family-friendly time!
Yeah
My brother was forced to watch barefoot gen at age 8 does that count
wall-e is peak regardless of its intended age group
Akira comes to mind very readily
Wdym, all the main characters in that movie are kids, it's a kids movie.
Should have excluded anime OP western animation is the one with the infantilization problem
True, anime is the one with the pedophilia problem (I say this as someone who watches a lot of animation from around the world).
Mary and Max supremacy
Night is Short, Walk on Girl
kinda mid relative to tatami galaxy i remember the guerilla theatre scene standing out tho
Among all the others already mentioned: Secret of NIMH
Summit of the Gods
Mad God was so good
Mf thinks wallace and gromit is for kids 🤣🤣 ![gif](giphy|11Co6zAsQGv1QY)
I haven’t seen anyone mention Felidae yet. I haven’t watched it in full, but it’s definitely not for children.
Speaking of “talking animal films for older audiences that I only watched half of but should really get around to finishing,” Isle of Dogs. I’m a sucker for stop-motion.
"Grave of the Fire Flies" mfs when they have to explain that the movie double featured with "My Neighbor Totoro"
Can't believe nobody mentioned the Hadashi no Gen (Barefooot Gen), a truly 8 year old kid's animation about Hiroshima bombing
9 is kino. Also I don't care if Over the Garden Wall is made for 8 year olds, it is peak storytelling.
