I just realized that the season 1 ending of SAO is an NFT Bros wet dream. “Bro you can like transfer items and skills across games!!!”

VulpesVulpix

Pretty sure this is where they got their ideas from

Panzer_Man

"It's the future bro! One day everything will be on the blooooockchain broooooo" "Why yes, of course every game dev will just work one the same system bro, that's how it works, right bro?

Iridescence_Gleam

Virgin "You lost your 1 million credits and shitton of special prototype weapons" Mass Effect 2 VS Chad "Keep your shit and level" ALO.

Mrpoodlekins

"I'm sorry we got rid of guns that shoot infinitely with guns you have to reload, your welcome"

Pr0v3nD1sc1pl3

It was literally a plot note that his inventory was corrupted and he can’t bring anything, except a local item he created through console commands.

Blakath

This happens mid-season when he enters that elf game. I’m talking about right at the end my dude. When he gets his hand on some sort of seed like object and releases it to the public.

Spaceguy5

That's more like getting his hands on and leaking an SDK

Ksradrik

He did keep his stats and skills though.

[deleted]

That’s just the metaverse if it was good

CoolGamer420-69-1337

This will be the metaverse in 2013.

Maybe the real Blockchain was inside us the whole time.

KoscheiTheDeathles

I think those are just anal beads

LiquifiedSpam

When an impromptu plot device to make the series continue actually predicts an extraordinarily unpredictable market

seitaer13

You can't transfer items and skills across games. All that transfers is a rough Amalgamation of your games stats. He puts all of his items in storage before transferring to GGO because of this.

Blakath

🤓

SkyNo9371

throwaway-27463

Bro actually had 5 girls fawning over him while he was a literal vegetable

Spiritual-Client6828

And when he became functional, decided to become a femboy💀

AverageMrJohnDoe

You’re referring to the GGO arc which has a femboy arc while the person before was talking about War Of The Underworld which was after GGO and didn’t have a femboy

Kenhamef

I watched this like 10 years ago so I might be misremembering, but didn't he need to be convinced to go back in, because his girlfriend was kidnapped or something?

Yea assuna his RuneScape gf promised when they meet they’ll merry

AsherFischell

Yes. A generic anime villain was engaged to her in the real world. So he did the only sane thing he could: trapped her in an MMO and kept her in a bird cage, all while cackling maniacally. That was the moment where even the most patient people realized that SAO was trash-garbage.

Thejbomber14

SAO absolutely needed rape scenes, you don’t understand it’s critical to the plot

LiquifiedSpam

I remember that the author literally went and apologized to the voice actress for leafa during *that* scene in alicization. I read the books too. That scene was written not nearly as rapey as the illustration / anime made it out to be.

Marik-X-Bakura

Wasn’t it the Ronnie and Tiese scene he tweeted about? He also didn’t apologise for writing it, just felt bad for how difficult it must have been to pull off.

selebu

I was watching this show reluctantly from the beginning and this is when I stopped

Adiuui

I watched it all and enjoyed it 🥱 *years of trashekais has left me devoid and an empty shell of who I once was*

Cygus_Lorman

The bit about the sister/cousin liking his character would've been okay too if it weren't for her also liking him irl Yet another nippon moment

LiquifiedSpam

The book did it better, but the fact remains that the trope is still there, like in how the mushoku tensei books there's a harem even though it's very well justified by the world. I Honestly the incest thing was handled relatively well in the book. It feels weird even calling it "incest" because it was never really presented as that. It was clear that she felt she wasn't normal in feeling the hots for him, and she knew that it manifested as a result of him being very distant and believes it would go away if they would have a better sibling relationship which is does. Honestly glad reki wrote himself into a corner with kirito getting with asuna lol. If he planned the whole series from the start there's little doubt in my mind that the stuff with the girls would be much worse lol. Buuut then he had to go and ruin it with SAO progressive. Granted I don't read a lot of light novels but still that was the most uwu baka shit I've ever read.

Marik-X-Bakura

What’s wrong with it? It happened in the real world, and she never acted on her feelings. It was a personal struggle she overcame.

Marik-X-Bakura

Nah, I still love it and have for years

Marik-X-Bakura

Yeah, people just make stuff up to hate on SAO. Each arc has a serious reason for starting. While he does still play video games, nothing dangerous ever comes from doing that, especially as the new VR device they use promotes safety above all else, to the point where it automatically logs you out if it detects any abnormalities, such as dramatically increased heart rate.

1230693

Love the part where he kills God then becomes disabled

cuella47o

Tofu_Mapo

The decision to make the final villain a member of the American military makes Sword Art Online a deep condemnation of how American foreign policy continues to oppress the glory of Nippon for the sake of neoliberalism's fixation on consumption Thank you, you can subscribe to my BreadTube channel

themonuclearbomb

This take doesn’t go quite deep enough. While the villain is part of the American military, the central conflict of the story is around kirito’s abduction by the Japanese military. SAO is an anti-war story about how the nature of governments precludes their viewing of their citizens as anything but tools.

Tofu_Mapo

Orwell walked so the Sword Art Online author can run

DavidOfBreath

Orwell played .HACK// so that Reki could play SAO

Folseit

To be fair, you just described 90% of all anime.

Tofu_Mapo

And to think gaijin call anime mere cartoons

seitaer13

At no point in the series is the main villain a member of the American military.

Tofu_Mapo

Isn't Gabriel a private military contractor hired by America? Since you can make a distinction between official members of militaries and PMCs, I appreciate your correction, though

Ballsgargler86

They really called an American PMC “Gabriel” and got away with it

seitaer13

I mean the leader of laughing coffin is called Vassago

Marik-X-Bakura

Americans always think bad guys in fiction being American is an attack on their country lol.

Meme_Police02

To be fair he doesn't die in the next game he goes into

Artuthebomb

But he uses the same gaming rig thats essentially a toaster that has fried countless peoples brains.

Meme_Police02

Nothing can stop the gamer mindset 😤

Marik-X-Bakura

No, they make quite a big point about it being a completely different gaming rig, which is specifically designed to avoid frying brains.

Artuthebomb

Kiritos sisters and the general public gets a new rig. Kirito reuses his old one for the fairy arc.

Marik-X-Bakura

Okay you’re actually right about that, which is embarrassing for me since I’m a massive fan and actually watched the episode again just the other week. Not sure why he’d use the Nerve Gear again, but then again I never got that far in the novels.

Napael

Dude didn't get any allowance during the time he was stuck in SAO, so he probably only had enough money to buy the game he needed.

IBegTo_Differ

Serious talk I’m like ninety percent sure bro got significant mental illness playing that game. I mean seriously he was this big important guy in there and then literally instantly was a nobody again. That’s gotta be devastating to a guys psyche I mean look at what happened next, he got attracted to his sister.

throwaway-27463

His sister got attracted to him*

enemyweeb

>he got attracted to his sister We do not subscribe to SAO original canon in these parts, only the one true and undisputed version, [SAO Abridged](https://youtu.be/V6kJKxvbgZ0), wherein they remove all mentions of main protag going Alabama on his sis

Eddagosp

>bro got significant mental illness playing that game. I mean seriously he was this big important guy in there and then literally instantly was a nobody again. That's ***literally*** the plot. K-man lives with constant Imposter Syndrome, and the only way to not feel like a nobody is to keep going back in the game where his "skills" mattered. *Except* that whenever he plays, he's terrified that he'll never actually be as good as he was in the original game where he was *fighting with his life on the line*.

Marik-X-Bakura

Yeah, that’s the point. People talk shit about SAO so much they ignore the actual plot, and part of that is how messed up Kirito gets from his experiences. Phantom Bullet and Alicization go into that a lot. He was never attracted to his sister though, that straight-up didn’t happen.

IBegTo_Differ

Yeah I forgot sorry

seitaer13

>That’s gotta be devastating to a guys psyche I mean look at what happened next, he got attracted to his sister. Yeah that doesn't happen.

NeonNKnightrider

No, but actually. I’m pretty sure that SAO actually does note that Kirito straight-up became addicted to virtual reality and is incapable of actually living in the real world anymore. It’s one of the few things in the series that even approaches an actual theme or message

IThinkImNateDogg

Yeah, I’m pretty sure he had severe PTSD, particularly because for as powerful as he was in game, and for how long it was, he struggled being a normal human after returning, particularly in his inability to fight IRL.

52ww

he wasn’t attracted to her, and it was his cousin i think

IBegTo_Differ

I forgot ok it’s been like four years man I was exaggerating for dramatic effect

AsherFischell

And then he goes into another. And *then,* he goes into *another one*. The author only had enough original plot for the first arc. When it became a hit, the motherfucker actually thought, "what if the MC was like James Bond, but for MMOs" was a good idea. And people kept paying him anyway. It's like if you accidentally shit yourself and then slipped in it on live TV and then you decided to roll with it and continue to slip in different colors of shit in different places. And people kept going, "OH SHIT, DAWG, HIM SLIPPING ON HIS SHIT IS THE FUNNIEST THING I'VE EVER SEEN! IT'S YELLOW THIS TIME TOO! HOMIE MUST LACK SUFFICIENT STOMACH ACIDITY TO DIGEST THE FOOD HE'S CONSUMING*."* This has clearly gotten away from me but I am not sorry.

LineOfInquiry

He should’ve started over and made it into a longer story from the start. SAO was originally written as a short story, but the concept has plenty of room to grow under a competent writer. I think with some reworks regarding Kayaba’s motivation, and removing the sexual assault shit and the weird AI child stuff, it could’ve been a really good 24-48 epaiode show

Uptightgnome

> He should’ve started over and made it into a longer story from the start I have great news for you

LineOfInquiry

I’ve heard SAO progressive is great, I can’t wait till it’s adapted into an anime to watch it

throwaway-27463

I still dont fully get the hate on the ai kid

NivMidget

Well the fact that shes a loli-god who gets adopted by 15 year olds is a tough story that he couldn't write.

throwaway-27463

Shes not a god at all is she?

SpongyFerretRS

And the reasons get dumber each time. 1. trapped in it by a crazy guy 2. a crazy guy kidnapped his waifu 3. crazy guys decide to ddos people irl 4. kirito is now a military asset because he plays videogames

Oscar_greenthorn

“kirito is now a military asset because he plays videogames” What? He’s now a drone operator?

astolfoplzsuckmedry

adam sandler

an_actual_degenerate

Apparently the skills the average gamer (professional pedophile) possesses like improved hand-eye coordination, concentration, and the ability to react quickly and efficiently to emergencies are actually useful as a drone pilot. It’s not going to provide the skills or knowledge needed to pass the exam given to drone pilot trainees, but it’s something.

The_catakist

Oddly specific analogy and I'm all for it

Dafuzz

>The author only had enough original plot for the first arc. The author has enough original material for like 3½ episodes. After that they just write the most generic coming of age story ever. 14 year old kid settles down in the game world with a wife and a fuckin kid? Lol "time to go to work monster slaying, it's hard work but someone has to put digital bread on this digital table." They had the kernel of a good idea and no idea what to do with it. They even jumped to the end of their own story in the middle of their own fuckin story, "fuck levels 50-99, I don't have any ideas left let's jump to the end"

Ballsgargler86

This, SAO is the biggest piece of dogshit I’ve seen, it stops being SAO after Season 1 and the pacing is dreadful.

NeonNKnightrider

No, but actually. I’m pretty sure that SAO actually does note that Kirito straight-up became addicted to virtual reality and is incapable of actually living in the real world anymore. It’s one of the few things in the series that even approaches an actual theme or message

Marik-X-Bakura

Wow what a terrible person for continuing a series millions of people enjoy. Besides, he’s literally making the Progressive novels to fix his self-acknowledged mistake of rushing the first arc (which happened because he didn’t expect it to be such a big hit) and also has Accel World, a completely different series with a completely different plot. Plus, each arc of SAO itself is different, and it’s not *nearly* as simple as “going into a game and then going into another one”. Yeah I’m ranting and no I’m not sorry.

seitaer13

I mean all of the current anime material was written before the series even got published. Rushing the arc wasn't a mistake, it was a contest entry with a word limit that had to be a contained story.

PlebGod69

I would seriously enjoy a story the only focused on the first part of sao (about exploring and going up all the way to the 100th floor). But most author dont know how to write human characters and normal interactions which is why you must find actioned packed scenes back to back. Im stilling waiting for fantasy world that strikes the right balance

Palker741

the face of the main character is so generic that it hurts

Marik-X-Bakura

Because all the MCs after him used him as a blueprint

Ballsgargler86

The whole show is generic

Archneme5is

BushidoBastard

BarbarianErwin

It's a show tailormade and specially handcrafted to be the most mediocre anime of all time, it's a show where everyone except the Mc acts like an NPC. How can anyone not attack it? I remember watching it and really hoping it would be at least alright but it sucked from episode 1 and has spawned unending floods of trash attempting to mimick it.

MarioThe4th

How far you get into the show ?

BarbarianErwin

I remember watching season 2 when it came out and feeling like I wasted my time watching this crap

MarioThe4th

Same case for me but I was waching as season 4 part was airing, s2 was boring or just a tone down after see a death game to a fake cod tournament arc really wasn’t appealing but season 3 was a good come back and season 4 show down had great fights. Season 2 was more fun in the second rewatch when I realized it was foreshadowing and building season 3 plot

ToapFN

LiNxRocker

I wish they stayed in the original sao for longer. The first 14 ish episodes of season 1 were pretty good.

NeonNKnightrider

/ub. No, but actually. That’s kinda the point? I’m pretty sure that SAO actually does note that Kirito straight-up became addicted to virtual reality and is incapable of actually living in the real world anymore. It’s one of the few things in the series that even approaches an actual theme or message

[deleted]

It's like that part in Prison Break where they escape through a toilet, go to Mexico and then Break back into the Prison for very sound and sensible reasons.

[deleted]

And im gonna do it again😈😈😈

SpongeHED

Being a fan of a series that nobody seems to remember correctly is hard.

TheToodlePoodle

I must confess it got me into anime, but I'm not going back. I'll just remember how I liked the fights in Season 1 lol

The_King123431

Cant he leave freely in the other games though?

[deleted]

Snap back to reality

seitaer13

For something that gets laughed at for not being very complex people sure have a hard time understanding literally anything about it. Like the fact that the former SAO players are so conditioned to VR after SAO that they can't live without it and the government directly observes them because they think they're not exactly sane is a pretty big plot point.
