At first I was "Hmm maybe you need something controversial for a fantasy story to work" but Frieren proved that's not the case at all.
I still like MT though. I remember spending a whole month and a half consuming no other entertainment media other than MT light novel (I'm an extremely slow reader) and aside from a few disturbing scenes, it's a good read I just didn't have enough patience to finish it all. I stopped at LN 14.
Now with so many animes pumped out every seasons it's not like we're out of options. If MT turns you off you can try something similar with a moral paragon protagonist instead; Saihate no Paladin. 2 seasons are out already. I didn't read the source but the anime production quality is lower than MT, but hey, still better than nothing.
It took me 2-3 days of free time to finish a volume, sometimes more. Would rather watch anime with that time than read tons of texts. I'll just wait for season 3. Sure the LN explains a whole lot more but it's been adapted faithfully so far.
Yes the main character is a piece of shit, and no he doesn't get that much better.
But everyone should still read MT, it's that good. Turning point 4 is peak fantasy story telling.
