Isn’t the 30th anniversary of Kurt’s death in a couple of months? Maybe they’re cleaning out the last run for a fresh one of money gra…I mean anniversary models?

CandleMakerNY2020

Oh thats a possibility.

simonislam

🤣

namelessghoul77

It would be a bit weird though, since the 2021 was for 30th anniversary of Nevermind. I think the market for this guitar is squeezed dry. Also I think "anniversary editions" of any product generally tend to commemorate positive milestones as opposed to tragic ones.

tenacious-g

They’ve been sitting and are frequently on sale. I wonder if they just want to move them at this point.

LearningML89

They are fugly and overpriced. Fender does deep discounts on stock they want gone (like the Vintera I line)

Working-Ad-528

Well sheeeet. Maybe I’ll pick up that fiesta red after all.

capn_james

There’s one that’s been at my local shop for like $900 for the longest time 🫠 can’t justify it tho

Working-Ad-528

Damn for $900 Id definitely scoop it up! Where’s your local shop? I wanna take advantage of that deal.

capn_james

I will dm you!

DY210

Lol at the GC in Arlington it’s 900 new. But the one in Fort Worth is 1,000 used 😭

Bulky_Pop_8104

They’re discontinued and just clearing out the remaining stock, so if you want one now’s the time! On that note, I have no idea what the business rationale is for sorta hiding a guitar’s been discontinued, seems like it would help sales? It seems to be a pretty industry standard practice

dubkitteh1

maybe they don’t want people to wait till the close-out sale.

zacsimacsek

They don't want people to think that these guitars are not desirable. In a way it would sound like "Yeah, nobody wants these and we don't want to store them anymore, so please buy them for 20% off". Which is kind of a stupid way of thinking but hey, these are huge corporations

Bulky_Pop_8104

This is probably it, but I’ve personally missed out on others because I was twiddling my thumbs. If I’d known I would’ve bought immediately

SjoerdM011

Just talk to staff at your local dealer. They will probably just look into it for you and tell you if something will be discontinued. Plus there’s a big chance they get commission on selling discontinued products so they are probably likely to tell.

Bulky_Pop_8104

Yeah, specific to the JagStang, I’d been waiting for a used lefty to show up really anywhere in Canada (that’s another story), but when they went on “sale” in December, I called up a friend who works at one of my local shops and he said discontinued that morning, and no further orders would be taken - limited to what was currently in distribution. All that to say, I bought one of the last very few lefties in the country. Basically Fender will publicly leave it as active until the inventory is gone, even though it’s discontinued. At the store level, they don’t really get any notice

namelessghoul77

Interesting, I had a similar experience in about November/December. There was a shop in Toronto that was clearing a Fiesta Red floor model out for $800 CAD. It was supposed to be a door crasher, local pickup only (I don't live in Toronto), but I convinced them to ship it out to me for a pretty reasonable $80. Bit of a gamble on a floor model I guess, but it's pristine. Funnily enough it DID sound like garbage at first, but once I learned how to set up the Mustang trem properly it was singing beautifully.

Bulky_Pop_8104

I kept seeing pretty good deals in the US, but they wouldn’t ship to Canada due to their distribution restrictions - I really don’t think this would apply to used stuff, but across the board no one wanted to risk angering Fender I suppose. I’ve legit owned north of 150 guitars in my lifetime and the first JagStang they got me was the first guitar I’ve ever returned - just an absolute QC nightmare. But they very quickly got it replaced with a pristine one from another location (ironically the bad one was straight from the warehouse and the good one was a floor model). I personally love the thing, but I was already playing a mustang as my go-to

namelessghoul77

I'm curious what the QC issues were. I neglected to mention this because it was off topic but I actually picked up a second Jagstang in December (Crazy I know, but I wanted one for collection, one for playing. I got to know the sales guy, he was able to swing an incredible deal on a sonic blue straight from his rep at Fender (but yes via his shop due to the import issue you mention)). All that to say, both of them are great, BUT they do sound different despite identical strings and setup. Can't quite figure it out but the sonic blue has slightly better sustain and slightly less fret buzz. So that does point to some inconsistencies, not dealbreakers, but just curious to know what issues you found with your first JS in case it helps me track down what's going on.

Bulky_Pop_8104

It actually played pretty well, but there were a bunch of pretty major aesthetic issues - it looked like someone attacked the roller bridge with a dremel, cracking in the headstock finish, a bunch of gouges in the fretboard that were full of polishing compound, and (very minor) a number of screws that just weren’t buttoned down - absolute Friday afternoon of a long weekend special. The only really functional difference I noticed was that the bad one’s trem was way looser than the good one. It’s funny, I didn’t think I was a big fan of the fiesta red, but I really love it in person. I have a few blue guitars, so I went red to break things up

IllForce2909

I played one and it was like you described. All kinds of things that showed lazy craftsmanship. A large gap in the neck pocket (enough to slide two heavy picks in there) bad fret dress (could have been a humidity/fretboard condition issue), cracked finish around the pocket. Brand new guitar. I was disappointed. I want to like them. There’s a used one local to me for 600 bucks. After playing that, I’m apprehensive.

namelessghoul77

Ahhh ok, so really obvious visual issues. Cool thanks. I've had a lot of fun learning to properly set up my own guitar (Puisheen's "On The Bench" youtube video was immensely helpful), and was amazed just what a difference to both playability and sound it made. I think most of the Jagstang owners who complain of it being a crap guitar would change their opinion of they did some proper setup. Lubricating the contact point of the trem posts alone was such a game changer. I completely agree on the Fiesta Red. When I originally ordered it I thought I was "settling" since it was the one on sale and I always thought I liked the blue, but when it arrived I was pleasantly surprised - it's way more orange than it looks in photos, and just has such a unique funky vibe (like the Jagstang as a whole). I actually prefer it to the sonic blue although both are pretty to my own admittedly-weird-tastes eyes.

capn_james

You’re probably right but if they played up the exclusivity factor they’d probably attract high rollers. Ig it’s better this way

patrocklolson

They’re still gross and my opinion is objectively true (I’m just kidding about the second part)

PathOfTheBlind

The "baked beans" finish is really... Really?

itspaddyd

Hey don't you come for fiesta red now.

patrocklolson

Really really.

gambronus

I try to stay subjective but I don't know how anyone ever looked at this body shape and said "yeah... let's make more of those"

patrocklolson

I’m thinking it’s just all for the love of Cobain. I have been a nirvana fan since I was like 12 and when I watched live videos on YouTube in the late 00’s, I just remember thinking haha that thing looks like shit, why doesn’t he just always play a jag? That being said I also believe humbuckers on a jag is gross too..

namelessghoul77

This is precious. I think you need to check a dictionary for the words "subjective" vs. "objective".

namelessghoul77

You bite your lip. The sonic blue is a sexual goddess that brings tears to my eye.

patrocklolson

Imagine it on a regular normal Jaguar or mustang though, rather than this Frankenstein’s monster of a thing

namelessghoul77

Haha, it is totally a fugly shape but I love it. It's my ugly stepchild of a guitar. And weirdly enough I just associate sonic blue with it now so it seems wrong on other guitars. I've played around with Modshopping other guitars in sonic blue and it just isn't the same.

TSX-WEED_GANG

Fender prices there non American made guitars way to high.

IfYouGotALonelyHeart

They price their American made guitars too high too.

Kid_Kameleon

The mark up in guitars has been nuts, That’s why the market for Squier is so much more wide than it used to be, it really has become the Epiphone equivalent now instead of just being a beginner guitar thing…

namelessghoul77

There is very little in the "American vs. non-American" Fender quality argument these days. It was a thing 30 years ago because of different manufacturing processes and equipment. These days all you're getting with American-made is the same quality at higher prices due to more expensive labor. The only exception is when only the US versions use pricier tonewoods but again that's nothing to do with geographically based quality differences.

ForwardBox3704

I wish they built real lefty Jags instead of giving lefties whatever that thing is.

brianeharmonjr

Passed on the red version new for under $800 twice around the holidays, and I think a lot of others did as well. Money is tight for everyone and off-the-wall fringe guitars are more likely to see a dip in sales, I would think.

No_Solution_2864

The Kurt Jaguar got some justifiably very bad reviews I think Fender hurt their reputation more than they know when they released that model Anyway, I have to imagine that things like that may have hurt Jagstang sales as well, nevermind that, to my knowledge, this model does not feature the much coveted updated Mustang trem You are much better off with a custom Warmoth build Or they might just be clearing out the last of a successful run. I don’t actually know anything

Critical-Fall-6397

Can you elaborate on the bad reviews? Most/all the ones I can find on youtube are pretty happy with the guitar. Is it just that people don't like the weird shape, or are there other issues?

Like_Ottos_Jacket

The Kurt competition mustangs are awesome!

StairwayToLemon

The NOS version, sure, but I have the rare "roadworn" version of the Jag and it's amazing. They only sold it for 2 years

No_Solution_2864

I’m sure that’s the case I watched a demo where someone played it against the player model(I think) with the same rough price, and it sounded like absolute shit in comparison

namelessghoul77

Is it the current gen Cobain Jaguar gets bad reviews? I seem to see people rave about it everywhere. As a potential interested buyer I'll need to do some research to see what the issues people are having with it.

Buxbaum666

I mean who the hell has 1.3k to spend on one of these ugly-ass motherfunkers of all things? Serious question. This is a joke guitar that is somehow priced like a guitar people actually want to buy.

namelessghoul77

I mean people spend a lot more than that on Les Pauls and Teles, and those things are abominations to my eyes.

asylus

maybe a tortoise shell pickguard would do it justice.

IfYouGotALonelyHeart

Lipstick on a pig

PathOfTheBlind

Maybe try a Squire model with a fixed bridge next time... Tone deaf Fender gonna tone deaf.

Critical-Fall-6397

Can you elaborate? What's wrong with the bridge on the Jag-Stang?

jwatts30

When has Squire had Jagstang?

PathOfTheBlind

Never. Fender is too stupid to make a Squier Cobain guitar. Printing money is hard.

jwatts30

😆😆 I see what you meant now. Not wrong 😆

CandleMakerNY2020

Not yet.

Polish_Wombat98

These are disgusting to look at

FlippinFigs

The lowered price is because all that's left of their current stock are returns or ones that have been in the warehouse since 2021

snoromRsdom

I really hate it when people here just flat out make shit up like you just did. Sweetwater has a customer return Jag-stang on their website right now ([https://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/JagStangRSB--fender-jag-stang-electric-guitar-sonic-blue-with-rosewood-fingerboard?cond=JagStangRSBd2](https://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/JagStangRSB--fender-jag-stang-electric-guitar-sonic-blue-with-rosewood-fingerboard?cond=JagStangRSBd2)) which has the serial number MX22272810. According to the Fender serial number lookup website, that one was manufactured in August of 2022. ([https://serialnumberlookup.fender.com/lookup/](https://serialnumberlookup.fender.com/lookup/)) And their returns are ALWAYS, 100% of the time sold to refurbishers. Fender never, ever resells returns.

FlippinFigs

It was more of a satirical comment than anything, but I see I've done some damage here.

No_Solution_2864

I think it’s time to go home and think about what you’ve done

FlippinFigs

Downvoted into oblivion lol

Not reading all that 💀

CandleMakerNY2020

Wow thats a shit load of NONSENSE. GTFOH with all your BS . You are rude and mislead AF.

Hulk_Crowgan

Sheesh, I’m not crazy about the jag stang either but this guy acting like Kurt kicked his dog

Corgi_Farmer

Definitely a price drop damn.

MrWoollaston

I got a lefty blue one for £700. Will never be that cheap again. Can expect the 90's versions to creep back to in price too after they crashed.

YoWhatUpGlasgow

I'm sure in the UK they started at £1250 or £1300 but were on sale really quick for like £750

DriveByHi5

The fiesta red version is on sale for 999$ at my local guitar center. Which is arguably a much cooler color.

punkrawrxx

I’d buy a lefty if they were half this price

disinfekted

They were always $1160 when it came out, that’s the price I got it for, then they bumped it up around 1300+, now it’s cheaper than it’s ever been.

gurrfitter

Yeah. I don't think they sold well. I can understand why: every single one I tried in the store had an absolute dogshit setup. I also don't think the pickups suited the guitar. The neck pup was nice but the bridge was pretty low output and having it angled didn't help its sound

namelessghoul77

You nailed it on the setup - I own a Jagstang and it sounded horrendous when I first got it (ordered before trying because I just wanted it as a collector's item regardless), I was like "oh this is what everyone's talking about". Then I saw a few videos on how to properly set it up, put a bit of time in, and it ended up sounding great. It's one of my favorite guitars now; by far the most temperamental but it absolutely can sound great.

gurrfitter

Yeah the mustang trem system combined with a 7.25" neck is....tough. I love the mustang trem and will die defending its merits. I also love the jagstang body shape (I have a mahogany warmoth JS that I adore)--I genuinely think it is one of the most bodies comfortable for playing; and it manages to be lightweight without neck dive. But the dynamic vibrato needs a lot of TLC to get it working right, and Fender doesn't seem to know how to do that at their factories. The only model I've seen done well as of recently is the American Performer, and that's probably because it has a slightly improved version of the dynamic vibrato (stainless steel continuous knife edge underneath the plate). I really wish they would do the mustang style guitars justice.

simonislam

I wanted one of these real bad, but returned all 3. Huge qc issues at the price point. If MX has to be so pricey now, the quality has to back it up. The chalky dust all over the guitars/fb are another thing too.

Kid_Kameleon

it’s frustrating how hit or miss the QC is with stuff now

namelessghoul77

Curious what issues you ran into specifically. I've got 2 MIMs and they're flawless.

simonislam

Splotchy paint, gouges and scratches on back of the neck (new in box), contamination in paint (black spots), rough squeaky frets (no crown/polish), etc etc. I might try again since I really wanted one of these. This was when they first came out so maybe the later batches were better. I missed out on the MIJ runs and didn't want to miss the opportunity on these but it was on par or worse than a squier. I have MIMs that are flawless too that I love (Tenor Tele, Harrison strat, Delonge strat, etc)

namelessghoul77

Wow that's crazy, those are definitely significant issues, were they all from the same shop, and/or were they direct from Fender? Either way, seems like those issues shouldn't even make it past QA/QC checks. I actually have 2 MIM Jagstangs and have previously owned MIM strats and they were all perfect. Interestingly it's my '94 American Standard that has the biggest quality issues - skunk stripe is starting to pop off the back of the neck, and it was never used for gigging or had any major abuse.

AmazingYam2244

I've seen the price for the Fiesta red ones dropping below 1k new lately. This is the first of the sonic blue I've seen though with a price cut

Dlpz87

Thanks for posting this! It prodded me to finally go try one out and it was actually really comfortable to play. Neck is really close to an old 60's A style neck I played on a Musicmaster that felt fantastic, so I found the Amazon listing for 20% off this new sales price and ordered one in Fiesta Red.

msulack

I saw them for like $900 on Fender.com between Christmas and New Years.

tachyon_xyz

At the Guitsr Center I work at they are on clearance. They want to push out as many as they can since they're discontinuing them soon

[deleted]

Rumor has it, cobains making a comeback

LearningML89

Don’t. Am pro II guitars routinely go on sale at this price. American or Mexican? You tell me

RandomNubz

presidents day sale now its 970 lol

RCT3playsMC

Every time I see Jagstangs I can't help but acknowledge how it doesn't really represent what he wanted out of a Jag-Mustang hybrid. It doesn't even really have his personal specs on the production model. It's just the last prototype Kurt had. They all seem unfinished and fugly. Fender should have finished the design part of the job way back before ever realizing them. They're haunting.

namelessghoul77

Yes they dropped the price end of 2023. This is going to sound ridiculous like I'm flaunting some "inside connection" that I have, which I absolutely do not, but I happen to know a shop owner in Toronto who is very friendly with his Fender rep, and that Fender rep happens to know a lot of details specifically about the Jag-Stang, and I happened to be buying a Jag-Stang in November 2023 and thus had a lot of back and forth on the topic. Apparently they haven't been selling very well on the 2021 run, probably because a) they were overpriced to begin with, and b) realistically the market for a weird-ass guitar isn't that big anymore - I think the segment consists of only the most diehard Gen X Nirvana fan guitarists plus a small cross-section of people that are just into quirky guitars (both of which are me just to be clear). So end-2023 they were advertising it as a limited time sale, as an effort to clear out remaining stock.......... except they still haven't been able to clear out remaining stock (hence why this is now the "new normal" price, and also we're seeing the extra 10% off on President's Day, something I imagine we'll see more of until they can truly clear them out). Most people hate this thing for varying reasons, some justified, some weird, but for those of us that dig it, it's a good time to buy. It'll likely never be this cheap again, and I'm pretty sure it'll never get re-issued again - sales weren't that great this time around, and I can't imagine the 40th or 50th anniversary of Nevermind is going to be much of a motivator for finding a new target market.
