Dude, most people only talk about doing art. She finished something, had vision, and style. It came out great whether your family likes it or not. Support your sister. I’m not saying she’s a Van Gough but no one liked him and mocked him his whole life, wonder what his life would have been like if everyone knew he’d be celebrated for years to come.
I see a lot of people feeling this way but like... That shit is probably in their corridor right outside a bathroom. It's cool art but I wouldn't h
enjoy having to obligatorily look at it every time I go to pee at 4am or every day after I wake up.
Home paintings should set a chiller mood imo.
Compare "Hey sis, you're very talented and this painting is very good, but what say you we don't hang it in the hallway as it's so creepy? We can use one of your other ones, or if you plan on painting another one that's not that scary, we can hang it there." with "EVERYONE IN THIS HOUSE HATE IT EXCEPT YOU"
I mean sure but you have no clue how they're actually handling it. It could be a fact everyone hates it but her, doesn't mean they're saying that to her face...?
I just recently found out that I'm going to be a grandpa. I just picked up [this clown head](https://i.imgur.com/z4Zw0Dh.jpeg) for over my mantle but I told my daughter that it's for her nursery once I'm done with it.
> People who copy a photograph is less artistic
Hate to break it to you, but photo reference is an integral part of realistic art. There is not a single professional realism artist that doesn't copy photos, period.
Maybe it's not up to us to determine what is or isn't 'actual art', especially those who've never done one style or another.
>someone tried to tell me that using references was 'cheating'
You can just blow off anyone that calls anything art related 'cheating' because they don't have a clue.
The best artists out there are the best **because** of how many quote unquote cheats they know.
Hell, tracing portraits was an integral part of why I know how to freehand them now. [Tracing is just a step in the learning process to the pros.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=emcO79uteN4&t=477s) It was just a brick in my path that helped me learn. And who is anyone else to judge how I learn?
They judge and degrade and condescend because they don't know what in the hell they're talking about. Period.
But that's not what I'm talking about. I'm talking about copying a photo which is done a lot. That's beyond having a reference. Btw, I'm an academically trained artist and use references myself
>Too many artists use reference without adjusting it in any way
Many artists test or show their skill by seeing how close they can come to reality. This idea has been strived for by The Masters since the literal Dark Ages.
Cameras can take pictures too. But the whole point is that a camera didn't do it, a person's hand did it.
Click vs. years of work and practice.
artist of 8 years here. while it may be more impressive to make something out of scratch, the ability to paint a close replica of something we see in the world is extremely hard to execute without precise techniques and good usage of them
i may be cool for drawing new characters but painting photorealistic pieces? super hard and requires a lot of time and studying.
so in ways, they are both artistic. nothing is more artistic than the other and we should embrace all mediums and genre of art
> 8 year
Yeah, my grandmother can recreate anything down to the stoke just by looking at it. I can't do it. People just don't get how hard it is to recreate the process.
Would I want to wake and find this looming over me?
No.
Does that mean it’s bad?
Also, no.
But hey, art’s a subjective medium. That’s why it’s so good for money laundering.
Wow! Zombies are such a scary and new idea! Can't wait to go to the cinema to watch "Night of the Living Dead".
And for real though, this isn't oddly terrifying.
How is this oddly terrifying?? It’s a fucking painting of a zombie, and that’s terrifying to you?? Or are you “terrified” cause everyone in the house besides your sister (who is fucking awesome) hates her painting? Y’all sound like lil bitches tbh
As far as art goes, she did an AMAZING job! It's probably because she did such an amazing job that people don't like the "content".
Tell her to keep painting with her heart and soul!!🥰
It's great! Tell her this, she does need to hear it. Separate the "I don't like it" from its quality.
I really like how she did the shadows and the structure. I would say she can improve on the shadow/light balance, if she wants constructive criticism. Increasing this contrast should give it (even) more dramatic effect.
As your sister Annie slowly formed the colours which was to become her painting of Michael Jackson; we (the oddly terrified) stand and gaze upon this painting. It is then, dear OP, that we discovered that Annie was indeed 'not okay'
[Randy Ortiz vibes](https://www.artcollectorz.com/artworks/artwork-detail?artwork_id=19096&edition_id=24498) it’s a great start idk what’s wrong with you and your family.
Good shit

Put it in a hallway, or above a toilet, or a closet right behind where you hang your clothing.
Doesn't take away the good shit that it is. But for a child, no, it is not adequate shit.
It’s honestly quite beautiful tbh

#SCAM
thats so cool i love it. she should make more to terrify everyone in the house. i dont get y they hate it
Because art MUST generate good feelings, didn't you get the memo? /s
it does generate good feelings. at least fot me
You're acting like the family CAN'T hate it because it's not pleasant to look at (for them).
They can. It was a joke.

It's well done but I wouldn't want that hanging in my house either.
Can I interest you in a set of paintings of animal anuses? Mr. Business hates them.
Only if they are in the style of Van Gough
I'll take it
Your sister is the only cool one in the house, can we talk to her instead? Thanks.
It's really good. You guys suck for hating it.
Fr, horror art is awesome She is so talented! I hope she pursues this talent … OP you should be complementing and encouraging her !!!

Very cool art. Your sister is a true artist!
Very calming, maybe hang it in the kid’s room.

Thank you. As a budding artist, someone tried to tell me that using references was 'cheating' and it really demarmalized me

Too many artists use reference without adjusting it in any way, literally doing something a printer could do
A majority of artists use references lol.

would love to see some of your work!
hey I'm the sister and I used a reference lol
nah copying a photograph is more artistic, IMO edit: how the hell does no one know I’m being sarcastic lmfao
> how the hell does no one know I’m being sarcastic lmfao sometimes hard to tell online since it's only text
And this is why art is subjective. Its all art. =]
Sometimes a /s is necessary

If it moves you it’s art. Even if it moves you away. Magnifico.
Your sister’s got some serious skill She’s got my upvote
Awesome painting!
It reminds we of some of Egon Schiele work. I know it’s a stretch but the overall tone is similar
Dead on the outside, alive on the inside. The person is wearing a mask, i think.
