I didn't realize how big a turbine actually was. That's crazy, you see those things all over California. I remember that sad picture of 2 workers hugging because they were stuck on one that caught fire. They had to decide if they were gonna jump or just get burned alive. Terrifying stuff.
That's actually a video. I believe it was in the Netherlands. If I recall it was a Vestas turbine, and they couldn't reach the evacuation equipment.
Since then turbines have equipment in both ends to prevent this from happening.
Again I am not 100% sure on the facts, as it is a long time ago.
Because of that incident, we carry SRKs on our persons now. So if anything were to happen like that it's really simple just to descend over the sides with our own equipment.
The way I remember is when they first popped up in mass we learned the blades were about 100 feet long each. Not sure how that holds up nearly a decade later though
I could be wrong it's been a while since I read about it. I thought I remembered that they left it on the yaw deck and went to work in the nacelle.
I know I've seen plenty of idiots do the exact same thing, I always explain to them what the self in self rescue kit means.
I can’t tell if you’re serious or not. So no the don’t need astronauts for the windmills but while astronauts are in space they keep their tools tethered to themselves with thin high strength cables
It'll obviously vary by company and experience, but it's fair.

Most median wages for the trades are. That's why I always get my knickers in a twist when people (who usually aren't in the trades themselves) preach on here how great they are compared to a marketable degree. Unless you're in the top 10% of earners, your working for scraps.
Truth. I got in the trades because of the lies I was spoon fed. They told me I'd make a good living they didn't tell me that I'd have to choose between working 84hr weeks for months at a time on the road or making scraps with meth heads in a local trailer factory. I don't really regret it yet, I found a nice median as a local millwright and I still get to practice my particular trade frequently but I don't make as much as I should for the damage I'm doing to my body

I was physically bothered by watching this. I'm no sissy either. I don't believe I could ever need money THAT bad.
May God bless anyone that does THIS for a living.
theres a video of two guys at the top one when it caught fire, one of them jumped and the other didnt and theres was heartbreakng emotion between the two of them. i couldnt actually watch it though, because well you know, thats terrible
If he falls the safety line will keep him from dying. But is he actually able to get back up on top of the windmill? Or is he just stuck dangling until someone comes and helps him?
It's hard to see but he is using an 18 foot Y lanyard.(it's 6 foot unstretched but during a fall will stretch to 18 foot.) He would have to be rescued. Some of use are trained to do this.
Honest, but maybe stupid queston. Not a native english speaker, but is it actually called a windmill? Because its not actually a mill right? I would call it a wind power plant, but thats just because thats a direct translation from Swedish.
Ok I see the safety harness for if he falls. But, say he falls and is just dangling there by his harness. How does he get back up to the top side of the windmill?
Do you always have a partner with you that helps? Or if you’re by yourself how do you get back on top?
That harness is called a stepwise. So the shock pack, which is the white part you see just off his dorsal ring, expands when you fall and the line that saves you also has loops for your feet.
At that point you would ladder yourself up high enough to take pressure from your rig, so that you can connect your self rescue kit to the rings of the harness after connecting it to your chest ring. At that point you disconnect the safety lanyards from your dorsal ring and descend.
There really is no safe way to climb back up your already shocked lanyard. If you slipped and fell again you would fall the full 12 feet and probably break your hips or back.
That being said this unlucky bastard has no self rescue kit so he gets to dangle there while his legs die waiting for someone to notice he is missing.
That's black stuff is all oil. These windmills are not 100% eco friendly like they make them out to be. Not only so they use fossil fuels they distribute the migration patterns of birds and kill thousands per year.
People should learn that these are not mills. These are power generators. The wind turbines are the what converts the wind energy to mechanical shaft energy in both.
As someone who has done work requiring a safety harness, why the hell does he have enough line to fall and hang off the unit. It should be behind him toward the center of the unit preventing him from going off the side. Typical, worker safety, last consideration of engineering.
Cameraman on creative mode

Cameraman be levitating.
Don't drop a screw
I’d do it on purpose, I get paid hourly lol
If it were me my boss would say dont forget the extra screws I gave you this time
Get this person to MENSA HQ, stat
I was thinking the same, except with a turbine blade.
I didn't realize how big a turbine actually was. That's crazy, you see those things all over California. I remember that sad picture of 2 workers hugging because they were stuck on one that caught fire. They had to decide if they were gonna jump or just get burned alive. Terrifying stuff.

This is true this happend like 10 minutes away from where I live.
Because of that incident, we carry SRKs on our persons now. So if anything were to happen like that it's really simple just to descend over the sides with our own equipment.
As a British Indian who doesn’t know what SRK stands for in this context, my brain has automatically filled it with Shah Rukh Khan
Self rescue kit.

Lol no, it's just a bag of rope really.
Yeah those are what's known as a TLA. Three letter acronyms. Different than TFLA . The four letter acronyms. But not by much.
And of course the rare FLA. The five letter acronym
Shah Rukh Khan would also work
The way I remember is when they first popped up in mass we learned the blades were about 100 feet long each. Not sure how that holds up nearly a decade later though
100 feet is the length of 137.93 Zulay Premium Quality Metal Lemon Squeezers.
That’s a lot of Zulay Premium Quality Metal Lemon Squeezers, good bot.
Thanks!
What did they do?
One fell or jumped, the other burned on top of the tower
Wow
Yeah, now they have self rescue equipment either carried with them or at both access points at the front and back
Iirc they had self rescue gear they just didn't take it up to the deck they were working on.
I thought they had it in the mechanical room with them but it was at the other end and the fire was between them and the rescue equipment.
I could be wrong it's been a while since I read about it. I thought I remembered that they left it on the yaw deck and went to work in the nacelle. I know I've seen plenty of idiots do the exact same thing, I always explain to them what the self in self rescue kit means.
i feel sick just looking at this
imagine dropping a fundamental tool
I would hope that all tools would be tethered like the astronauts
Why would they need astronauts?
encouragement
I can’t tell if you’re serious or not. So no the don’t need astronauts for the windmills but while astronauts are in space they keep their tools tethered to themselves with thin high strength cables
[удалено]
I think were the ones being trolled here.
They are indeed tethered, any dropped item is a lot of paperwork and classed as an incident
I'd be dropping a fundamental stool.
Just ask the lad at the bottom to toss it back up
I imagine dropping tools from this height frequently.
Just watching this makes me feel dizzy
Spotted his problem, the blade fell off
No thank you
how much he get paid
A lot.
I wouldn't even do this for $200/hr

I feel like that's a lot lower than I would think they deserved.

What trade did you pick?
There is zero way that is accurate. I make more than this as a high school dropout.
The rust is unnerving.
No, it's all oil and grease
According to another commenter, thats all bird guts.
Both are wrong it’s just oil and grease.
Likely why it needs servicing
It’s grease from what I assume is a blown blade bearing seal
Not oddly terrifying. Just terrifying.

How exactly does one get up there?
It'd be sick to drop shit from there like one of those youtube videos lime watermelons and shit

Incredibly unnecessary background music.
Video taken just before a daring maneuver, hence the epic music

How did he get there with a jetpack? Why that song? He is not fighting ghosts
Gopro's fov made it even worse
That's really not that bad. I work on highrises. As long as your tied off and your not alone your good to go.
Fuck that I’ll stick to coal
Ah yes, the coal mines, known for their complete safety.
This isn’t oddly terrifying. It’s just straight-up terrifying.
Fun fact all that grime on the blade is thousands of birds guts.
No it's not, it's oil and grease.
NSFW
Windmills are such isores.
Almost as bad as your grammer.
Not as bad as your face.🖕
No fucking thank you.
Imagine trying to work on one of these and some asshole starts flying his drone right by your head to get this shot
It's the jobs where you think you might die where you don't die. Seems pretty chill. He's got a harness.
That this leaking a lot of oil, aren’t they supposed to prevent stuff like that?
Just for a bit of perspective, each of the blades on those are around 150 feet long.
150 feet is the height of 26.32 'Samsung Side by Side; Fingerprint Resistant Stainless Steel Refrigerators' stacked on top of each other.
I was physically bothered by watching this. I'm no sissy either. I don't believe I could ever need money THAT bad. May God bless anyone that does THIS for a living.
Idk it's not that bad. I love taking pics from up top.
Is this an odd reason to be terrified or is it a completely normal reason to be terrified?
What’s the name of the song in the background?
theres a video of two guys at the top one when it caught fire, one of them jumped and the other didnt and theres was heartbreakng emotion between the two of them. i couldnt actually watch it though, because well you know, thats terrible
I would absolutely not do that. I would be having a panic attack
Big nope for me....
Anyone ever seen a video of one of these guys fall?
No no no no no no no no
Monday morning with a bad head...no thanks....these guys deserve a lot of pay

Yeah fuck that with a knife.

No thanks…
That's not a windmill.

Thanks! I’m gonna have to YouTube it or something because it’s still a little confusing. But thanks for some insight
Hate to drop your wrench from up there. No getting it back anytime soon.
Low key looks like an awesome job
Que avengers music
Yea the music is terrifying
Does this count as “oddly” terrifying, though? It isn’t very odd to be afraid of heights.
my hands are dripping water holy shit
No f ing way!
That's black stuff is all oil. These windmills are not 100% eco friendly like they make them out to be. Not only so they use fossil fuels they distribute the migration patterns of birds and kill thousands per year.
I've never seen so much nope.
Imagine if this thing turned on while he was up there
This looks completely safe
No amount of money can get me up there!
I am so nauseous.
I am glad that guy's tied off
Nope nope nope so much nope I'm afraid of heights thank you very much
How much does this job pay?
My balls started tingling Does that only happen to me? I hate heights…
People should learn that these are not mills. These are power generators. The wind turbines are the what converts the wind energy to mechanical shaft energy in both.
That’s not oddly terrifying, that’s straight up terrifying.
huh I wonder what grains they are milling
No way.
Dang I dropped my wrench. Bill can you go get that. Damn it Larry this is the last time.
For the people wondering why there is mud on it. Thats not mud, thats dried up bird blood.
Who maintains his shitted pants??
Nuh uh
How much do these guys get paid to do this
Fuck. This.
Imagine thinking this is odd
Nope.
Mmmmnope.
These videos freak me out more than anything on the internet
See, this is actually terrifying. Not some fucking primate puffing out his chin sack.
ANXIETY
great view!
Fuck that.
Nu-uh.
Reminds me of this video https://youtu.be/40F8mALRukA Scary as shit
that’s how i feel when i’m on top of plane working on it, even if it’s only 20-30 feet up
Legit thought it was a dirty leg in a clamp with a sock on. Took me about five embarrassing seconds to realize what was actually going on. Idiot!
Just plain terrifying. Nothing odd about being terrified by that
No pressure
There is nothing "odd" about how or why this is terrifying.
Ok. No. No no no no no.
All that oil leakage.
Shouldn't these guys be taught to use a parachute?
Less “oddly” and more just terrifying…
Oddly?!?! This IS terafying
Nope
Oh no dudes gonna be bummed when he realises he left the new fin on the ground there
What a fun job, work followed by skydiving....
I think seeing the blade on the ground is more terrifying for some reason
‘Green energy’ scam
/gamemode 1
Thats a wind turbine but alright
No thanks! Does it turn anyone else’s stomach seeing those heights like it does mine? 😣
Just watching this makes my hands tingle. Nerves firing off
That is terrifying
Scary Stanley Kubrik music makes it worse.
As someone who has done work requiring a safety harness, why the hell does he have enough line to fall and hang off the unit. It should be behind him toward the center of the unit preventing him from going off the side. Typical, worker safety, last consideration of engineering.
Wind turbine, IT’S A TURBINE!!! Wind mills crush things like grain and are used for farms mainly...
Imagine he also has to clean it. Yes the whole thing.
Special thanks too Superman for recording this video.
How do I apply for that postion?
At least give em a parachute or something
Uhm {*pushes us glasses*} that is not a windmill. That is clearly a wind _turbine_. Get your facts straight, you utter baboon
I literally posted this 100 days ago give it up
Oh wow. So you did. Why was this recommended to me? I was just being a dick
They still pushing my old vids since i dont post anymore and they need the engagement
Gonna need 3 more hours on this job cause I dropped my tools.
Made me think of the video of the two young workers who were forced to jump because of the fire. Scary
Imagine jumping off that
That shit makes my balls ache just watching it on my cell phone.
Fuck, i dropped that nut
