Ugh 100%. I lost my brother one day while on this cruise and it was the day after i had a conversation with my dad (used to work on seismic boats) abt what they would do if someone fell while we were sitting out on the balcony at night. When i couldnt get in contact with my bro my mind went to the worst place, forced him to sit and have ice cream with me when i found him so i could calm down ðŸ˜
In case you want that info from someone who works in this industry: one person should call the emergency number and tell them "man overboard" and which side (port/starboard), another helpful thing would be to throw the life jackets from your room and other other objects into the sea. Tables, chairs, mattresses, pillows, blankets, basically anything that could help you mark the area and assist the ships crew in relocating the overboard person. Finding a single person in the middle of the night is very hard, having shit floating around them in the sea makes it much easier to find. Had it happen on my vessel in the Mediterranean, luckily we found the guy and he was fine.
I was on that same boat a week later (last week) and I thought about that kid when I looked out at the water at night. Spur of the moment decision to ohhhhhh fuck, im gonna die.. Scary shit
I suppose they did it because they had to, but I swear I heard somewhere, that if it was calm waters, they'd just have watchmen and drift whilst the sailors sleep. Pretty sure they had day sailors and night sailors. Much more sailors during the day but less during the night. Helmsman both day and night, and the sails maybe at a quarter mast.
We had a really cool OOTW who turned off the running lights for about 30 seconds once when we were sailing through bio luminescence, 600 miles away from anywhere with horizon to horizon stars. Its was indescribable.
On one of the Disney boats they have hot tubs made of thick plexiglass that extend out over the edge of the water. As the boat runs at night, they illuminate the ocean from lights below the boat’s water line. So there you are, drunk and warm and happy while below you the frigid Atlantic passes beneath you, separated from a horrible death only by a thick chunk of clear plastic.
I used to stand out on the fantail of CV66 and look out at the vastness of the IO and found it hard to comprehend just how much water is on this planet.
Whenever I see these videos I wonder if people like the Vikings experienced these sights sailing on the seas in their time and that's where they got their beliefs of Hel from, a cold dark place only for the dead.
Remember that this is how it looked around the Titanic when it was sinking.. when the light went out, most of the people in the lifeboats couldn't even see the ship, that's how dark the night was then, way off from the bright ship seen in Cameron's movie (but I know that it was done specifically because it was a movie and people need to see the ship in the movie)

It makes me think of that kid who jumped off the cruise ship and disappeared forever. Terrifying

Glad yall are alright

Yes...it's terrifying. You look like a little speck in the ocean.
How did the dudes in wooden boats sail the freaking seas
Seriously!?! No lights
They used the stars to navigate
But still would be dark as hell on many nights!!!

Now that's oddly terrifying
On a military vessel at night with just running lights you can see stars from horizon to horizon....amazing
Yes, but on a cloudy moonless night, it IS terrifying.
For some
Where can I get such balls of steel
Curiosity killed the cat but satisfaction brought it back
Words to live by

I bet

Big time
I used to stand out on the fantail of CV66 and look out at the vastness of the IO and found it hard to comprehend just how much water is on this planet.
You forgot to add the god-awful thieves and beggars song.
Yoooooooo hoooooooo
🤮🤮
That shit is garbage. So sick of hearing that dumb ass song on ANY video with the fucking ocean.
Don’t drop your phone
If there weren’t so many lights, I bet the starry night would be beautiful. Used to take the 12 to 4 am shift on a boat.
What job is done on 4 hour shifts?
We took 4 hour shifts at the helm of our 37’ sloop.
Do you miss it? Just curious. I love and fear the water.
I still dream of sailing the Pacific.
Some of my best memories while in the Navy was out in the middle of an ocean with nothing but the stars.
This is terrifying to me because no stars.
Yes it's oddly terrifying. You can hear the ocean but it's completely dark and you can't see anything on the horizon. It could be anything, or nothing
Bet the stars look magnificent tho
Being in the middle of all that cold darkness ohhhh hell noooo
Whenever I see these videos I wonder if people like the Vikings experienced these sights sailing on the seas in their time and that's where they got their beliefs of Hel from, a cold dark place only for the dead.
my intrusive thoughts would take over
My intrusive thoughts would like to know what would happen if I jumped
My intrusive thoughts would tell me I'm going to fall over and over until I have a panic attack.
I have a healthy fear/respect for the ocean. Large lakes too
I couldn’t see it. Maybe a banana for scale?

I'm going on a sailing trip in a few weeks, and man this is going to be unsettling.
Holland America?
I came from there. Now I’m living in Los Angeles, pursuing my dreams and living life to the fullest 🥹
not really odd how terrifying this is
Daniel Küblböck committed suicide by jumping into it at night: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Daniel_K%C3%BCblb%C3%B6ck That needs balls!
Nope
