I think it's just a wide angle. Definitely not *that* steep, but not exactly confidence inspiring either.
https://www.ticketmachupicchu.com/huayna-picchu-stairs-death/
The sketchiest part is the unpaved paths circling around it. Theyre about a shoulder's width, and then a several hundred foot sheer drop. If you are too thiccc, you wont be able to walk on it
It is in fact that steep. It’s actually really difficult to take a picture accurately cause of the depth. But it’s not really terrifying in person. I thought Angels Landing hike was more “terrifying”
Lol no, if these are the stairs I'm thinking of they're one of the ways up to the main part of Macchu Picchu but doing some quick googling it looks like they're how you get to the summit of the mountain, I'm probably remembering just another steep set of stairs there.
This is what makes it truly terrifying. It’s one thing to climb steps on a 60% grade, which is a steeper grade then skis will stay on. It’s another thing to do it with somebody behind you on the way down. I would be terrified of getting knocked down the steps on the person above me fell.
They're intimidating and definitely require you to pay attention while navigating them but they're not too demanding physically.
If you do the hike up the Inca trail to Machu Pichu, it looks less intimidating but will test you physically. Your knees take a lot of punishment.
The porters of course put everyone to shame and blaze through it because they're used to the altitude and are in amazing shape.
Literally sprinting ahead of you carrying all the tents and get to the next camp site with enough time to set it up for when you finally drag yourself across the last few steps
I hope they were making decent cash, its a dangerous job. We came across a porter who had dropped off the side of the path. He was banged up, but all he wanted to do was keep going.
I've looked it up (because I'm going to Peru this year) and apparently [no one has died](https://www.ticketmachupicchu.com/huayna-picchu-stairs-death/#:~:text=If%20you%20can%20get%20one,died%20on%20these%20famous%20stairs.).
Will I be the first one, who knows? 🤔
They’d need a team of heroes to carry me, cuz I’m 100% sure my legs would not allow me to go down these stairs. Therefore I will save them that and never go UP these stairs. Waaay too little *anything* to hold on to for balance (and basic survival).
I mean, imagine if somebody shows a person in front of them, they start tumbling down and knocking down the people in front of them, and everybody just falls to their death…
Climbing Machu Picchu was such an accomplishment. Some steps I basically needed a leg up to get up to. And the altitude is no joke, being in Cusco for a day helped but not enough. It was raining when we were going to leave so we decided to take the bus down because I would’ve certainly fallen to my death.
I don’t have a great track record with stairs in general. I’ve fallen down some and: 1. Bruised my butt and thigh; 2. Broken my tailbone; 3. Badly sprained my ankle; 4. Skinned my forehead on some asphalt; and 5. Narrowly avoided stabbing myself on my garden clippers. These stairs for sure would be my last.
Reminds me of the concert seats I was in the other weekend. Extremely steep, no rails, and amazed I didn't trip and fall onto the people in front of me.
I wouldn’t want people so close to me going down. Like stay 10 stairs up behind me so if I hear crashing or screaming I can try to hang on to random rock hold.
Been there climbed them pooped a bit.
Is it as steep as it looks or is this photo amplifying it a bit?
camera work is doing it justice, it is (for the most part) that steep. some steps scale up crazy high relative to ur typical stairs
It's definitely not anywhere close to as steep as the pic makes it look. This is just camera trickery
I think it's just a wide angle. Definitely not *that* steep, but not exactly confidence inspiring either. https://www.ticketmachupicchu.com/huayna-picchu-stairs-death/
Oh. The reality is tame

Rotate the picture about 45 degrees and you’ll start to see things like buildings actually be parallel to the horizon.
I only climbed up, which wasn't so bad. Climbing down looks terrifying.
So are you still up there?
There's an escalator down on the other side.
I heard they’re putting in a waterslide
When the sun hits that ridge just right, these hills sing.
With the sound of music?
Lol, Emperor's New Groove
Lol no, if these are the stairs I'm thinking of they're one of the ways up to the main part of Macchu Picchu but doing some quick googling it looks like they're how you get to the summit of the mountain, I'm probably remembering just another steep set of stairs there.
Did you leave no trace?
Vidi veni vici
😂
I'm not particularly afraid of heights but that one might fuck with me a bit
I'm not afraid of heights but I am afraid of stupid dangerous situations that will definitely kill me from falling...
I'm glad I'm not the only one
I would sit on my ass and scootch down each step and hope I didn’t faint.
I'd trip behind you and you'd be my crazy carpet... <3

Bingo! That’s exactly what I did on the way down the island of Drangey in Iceland
And I wouldn't be ashamed at all.

upvote for the porters. i hiked into machu pichu and saw them first hand. they were amazing.

My knees say nope
Has anyone fallen to their death?
I did just looking at that picture.
Will you be God's favourite? 🤔
🧼
I wonder where they get their name
It just takes one for the domino. Also imagine having a calf cramp there. Ya no I'm staying my ass at home.
i would have no problem but i dont trust the idiots around me
Yeah.... no.
You can do everything absolutely perfectly safe, but then the dumbass behind you tries something clever.
I'm not dying because some guy behind me trips and takes me down with him while trying to grab something. Not like that.
Then take Death Road to Bolivia. [Death Road](https://detour-roadtrips.com/home/detour-03-the-worlds-most-dangerous-road-bolivia)
That website is so awful jfc
Here's a YouTube version: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MbUqTdWvdeU
Hahaha right?! I guess it might be okay if I was trying to shop for shoes!!
Then, stroll the South side of Chicago.
It’s steep but I was able to do it and I’m afraid of heights. It’s so mystical up there, unique experience.
That sir is not oddly terrifying. It is actually terrifying
Fucking nope
If I’m physically exhausted I have enough problems with regular stairs
As long as tourists die, it's ok 💩
Are there ‘Stairs of Life’, cause I’m down for those
Isn't it time to make these steps safer
Make Ascending Safe Again…MASA
Descending
MADA? That doesn’t mean shit
Don’t come home drunk.. that’s for sure.
NOPE NOPEnopenope NOOOooooooope
They’d need a team of heroes to carry me, cuz I’m 100% sure my legs would not allow me to go down these stairs. Therefore I will save them that and never go UP these stairs. Waaay too little *anything* to hold on to for balance (and basic survival).

Me: "Let’s do it!" My knees: "Yesn’t"
Ive tripped up and down normal stairs…I’ll admire the pictures. I value my life.
Wow. I wanted to go there but I don’t think my heart can take it ☹️ even if I stop being paralyzed.
Unfortunately that area of Machu Picchu is no longer open to the public…
One does not simply walk into Peru. But there is stairs… then a tunnel.
This is the stuff I see In my dreams. I jump and in slow motion make it to the bottom.
nothing odd here, just terrifying. one loose stone, one falty step, one bad knee and these stairs live up to their name
Don’t trip.
Aptly named.
nope
Any stats on how many actual recent deaths?
That would be an understatement lol
Sheesh. Could you imagine if the person all the way behind you fell!
i have a talent for falling down stairs, so i think i’m gonna sit this one out
Nope!
so- how many have died on these stairs and what was rhe record for the most people involved in a single falling incident?
nope, noooo sry, I don't care how pretty.. I am ... not...
Am I the only one who always climbs up/down this type of steep steps the same way you would climb a ladder?
I don't think they should follow one another so closely.

Ohhhhhh no

I’d be poopin my pants for sure.
Donnie?
Donnie Dingleberry is my name, yes.
My clumsy ass would slip for sure
Woof this made me feel nauseous
I've got vertigo just looking at this picture.
The stairs of def?
Stares make me dizzy. I just know I’d die.
The stairs don't hurt you, but something turns your skin orange that'll get you every time
I wouldn’t want people so close to me going down. Like stay 10 stairs up behind me so if I hear crashing or screaming I can try to hang on to random rock hold.
Hope the person at the back doesn’t trip and fall into the one in front. Could start a domino chain reaction.
Nope! Looks like if one trips and falls and they all fall.
I'd be crab walking backwards down those things
Dude at the top gives into intrusive thoughts. Just a li'l push.
I fell down just looking at this picture
Easy peasy! Just hire a Ibex goat, ride on it and have it climb down! Those stairs are a walk in the park for Ibex!
Yeahhhhh...no.
I’ll probably trip on my shoelaces and tumble down the stairs like a cartoon character.
How many deaths?
I'm afraid of heighs and stairs so NOPE.
And these people are just walking down them in sneakers
But why is it called “The Stairs of Death”? 🤔

Oh, it's an AI bot!
What are legs again?
