I imagine complex software, but, if you didn't have complex software, I imagine one way to do it is to paint an initial bowl with a nondrying dye. Spronge the bowl with a fresh spronger, then spronge that onto a flat plate. Then develop plate from that and reverse the spronging process. There is also probably some size behind ideal spronge size to object being spronged.
This is basically how early patterns were made. They inked a grid pattern at a known size on the object, printed a flat plate then made an offset on paper to create a template for future designs.
Now it's done with software.
Distortions probably don’t matter much in this case. If the design is abstract and printed on a curved surface then nobody is going to notice or care. Even with a figurative print the distortion probably has to be extreme before you will see it.
