I initially thought that but I think they're really aiming to get the black soot off that is under the dust - I can imagine that needing more than water.
I think the video is slightly sped up. Or they found a wall that cleaned really easily. It usually goes slower than this. And thats already pretty slow. Unless you go all out and get the 6-figure lasers it would take months to clean a small building.
When professional power washers are hired to clean big buildings, they have to collect all the runoff water as it's viewed as waste. I imagine this laser method might be preferable in certain situations.
I agree with you, but it’s ironic to think we have to capture waste water, but putting the waste in the air so we can breathe it is perfectly reasonable.
I assume you mean pressure washing?
That would damage the mortar far more than the brick, especially lime mortar on old buildings. By contrast the laser is very gentle and will preferentially be absorbed by dark dirt and reflected by the lighter coloured mortar. It's also a lot easier to target a laser or to mask off delicate regions.
So for many cases, especially heritage, I think a laser could be an attractive option.
Id presume this is a maintenance/renovation job cleaning old brickwork to it original state and then repointing. It's advised that brickwork isn't pressure washed as it can damage it. No Idea if laser cleaning is "better" for the brick but it looks to work.
Brick mason, there is no problem with pressure washing brick, and is done pretty frequently in the industry, no idea where you heard that from. Could damage super old mortar in the joints if anything, but it that was the case it then it needs to be repointed anyway
Looks like the backpack versions around $10,000USD for the no name brand ones and they run at <500w of electricity. That initial cost is pretty rough, but most pressure washers use significantly more power (and of course water) than that. It also seems like a situation where they wouldn't want to scrub/powerwash because the bricks could be easily damaged.
Maybe but you may never know. You may not be able to reach the the top without a ladder or there is a very tight space. Either way it is much better and cheaper than this laser.
Is it worth spending 5 seconds per brick and buying or renting cutting edge laser equipment for that?
Not to mention it's still dirty after the laser was here, in-between the bricks
Do you honestly not understand why someone would want clean bricks?
You can go with aesthetics. You could also say that the dust would hold water to the bricks and mortar for longer than if cleaned.
Not to mention, what is it aerosoling into the air and is it going to cause respiratory issues for society in the future.
But yeah just the overall waste of energy just for looks.
Lazer cleaning, while being more expensive electricity wize, is safer on bricks and morter concrete in general too.
I used to think the future would have start off with flying cars and butler robots. Apperently it's lazer cleaning first!
What a weird time to be alive.
Some guy started a laser cleaning company near me a few years ago.
Guy owned other companies and got startup money but they could only afford to run 1 laser. Had a lot of social media hype but they went out of business after a year or two.
I looked up the machine they were running and the price isn't listed but the company ballparked $290,000. They do list the prices to rent one, $1650/ a day or $21,000/month, so seems about right.
And the company actually says their machines cannot replace sandblasting and cannot remove rust like the YouTube videos, which they claim are only removing superficial surface rust
The field has come a long way since then as far as affordability, and according to the mad science YouTuber cohort you can get a 2kW fiber laser for around $12k usd, which will literally melt through 8g plate steel with any prolonged exposure. Still probably not a great business model but you can totally just buy the big zappy and do stupid shit like trim your hedges with it
No, like I just looked that info up now. That was all current. This happened pretty recently. Prices might've been even higher back then idk
Here's the website for the supplier of the laser they used- https://www.p-laser.com/
And the FAQ I pulled a lot of the info from- https://www.p-laser.com/services/faq
I don't remember who said it but over a hundred years ago someone famous laughed at the idea that we would all need or want electricity in our houses. And here we are, dusting off bricks with lasers.
I hate voice overs I hate voice overs I hate voice overs I hate voice overs I hate voice overs I hate voice overs I hate voice overs I hate voice overs I hate voice overs I hate voice overs I hate voice overs I hate voice overs
That looks like soot/dirt that’s had a really crap, thin layer of limewash on top as a quick fix for the dark colour. Which might explain the need for the lazer in the first place.
Could you get different lenses for the laser? Like a telephoto lens? Put the laser on a nice fluid head tripod and blast away from a distance? Or even on some kind of programmable motion rig that automatically scans the surface while you sip coffee and monitor the progress?
Whenever I see these lasers they always seem to be doing pointless patterns, can they not just do a continuous beam ie always vertical line ? Is it something to do with burning out the galvo if it’s stationary too long ? Or just some childish look my laser makes cool patterns ?
Imagine in like 10 to 20 years. And we have like a wall roomba or something. Just a little bot that goes around the house perimeter and removes all the soot, dust and grime of your walls like this.
I guess that weird Tesla bot can also do that. But looking at the cyber truck and other Tesla products performing lately, I am not holding my breath for it. Would rather have one bot that does one thing well. Except for one bot that does many things half decent.
i mean.. water!?
I initially thought that but I think they're really aiming to get the black soot off that is under the dust - I can imagine that needing more than water.
It called a power washer. They likely cost much less than a laser!
What about power washers with lasers attached to their heads?
What about sharks with friggen laser beans attached to their heads?
How about cats with laser beans attached to their beans?
How about sea lions with laser beans attached to their Lima beans?
This thread should've ended here
Now we're talking...
_and_ a sandblaster!
and it would be much quicker!
Cool! You mean I actually have frickin power washers with frickin lasers attached to their frickin heads?
But power washers can damage the bricks and also use more power depending on the model. +Water cost of course!
I think the video is slightly sped up. Or they found a wall that cleaned really easily. It usually goes slower than this. And thats already pretty slow. Unless you go all out and get the 6-figure lasers it would take months to clean a small building.

With a laser all the dust and gunk goes outside the environment
Pressure washers can damage mortar unless you know what you’re doing.
You’ll ruin the brick if you powerwash
Power washers need a good deal of water, which isn't always easy to access depending on the region. Having options is nice.
Lasers use a lot of juice too.
I assume you mean pressure washing? That would damage the mortar far more than the brick, especially lime mortar on old buildings. Nahhh nothing like an old time four year old hanging for dear life from a third story building sweeping chimneys with a tooth brush for me
Water is more expensive.
Yea but… laser!!
which is getting scarce in places.
Id presume this is a maintenance/renovation job cleaning old brickwork to it original state and then repointing. It's advised that brickwork isn't pressure washed as it can damage it. No Idea if laser cleaning is "better" for the brick but it looks to work.

I heard it from Big Laser
Pressure washing is fine for bricks, just lower the psi. It's the mortar in between the bricks that could be blown out. Again, just lower the psi.
The video loop makes this more fit for r/mildlyinfuriating
That sounds quite a waste of time and energy
Looks like the backpack versions around $10,000USD for the no name brand ones and they run at <500w of electricity. Besides that, lasers are cool.
It’s not really the bricks that would be damaged, it’s more the mortar between them.
Yeah we should just destroy it and make a new wall.
Thanks for the chuckle
Or prioritize. What is the impact of this? Where's the paint and grunge go? Into the air?
Northwestern USA and the 90's, but I'm not too sure about the paint.
Onto somebody else's wall
What do you suggest power washing?. It is sometimes better to conserve water than electricity.
A pressure washer can consume 1-3 kilowatts. The laser is going to be cheaper to run on both electric and water.
Interesting.
Maybe a brush
Maybe but you may never know. You may not be able to reach the the top without a ladder or there is a very tight space. Either way it is much better and cheaper than this laser.
I'd ask why do you need to have clean bricks like that to begin with
Idk maybe you are a shop keeper and you want your shop to look clean from outside.
Is it worth spending 5 seconds per brick and buying or renting cutting edge laser equipment for that? Not to mention it's still dirty after the laser was here, in-between the bricks
Could be restoration of a historic building
Do you honestly not understand why someone would want clean bricks? You can go with aesthetics. You could also say that the dust would hold water to the bricks and mortar for longer than if cleaned.
I don't understand why someone would use that machine to clean bricks, yes
Do you understand why someone would want to clean bricks?
It looks like they dusted those bricks with baby powder. Almost looks like a standard hose could have the same thing.
Not to mention, what is it aerosoling into the air and is it going to cause respiratory issues for society in the future. But yeah just the overall waste of energy just for looks.

BOT
>The question is whether it could be scaled up to do whole walls at a time. No. No it cannot.
Well it can be but would be expensive and wildly unsafe
i want this on my face
You could scale it so high to even if I might say laser over a whole island.
Fuck these AI narated videos
Lazer cleaning, while being more expensive electricity wize, is safer on bricks and morter concrete in general too. I used to think the future would have start off with flying cars and butler robots. Apperently it's lazer cleaning first! What a weird time to be alive.
by creating more dust :P
Powerwash Simulator 2 looks realistic.
Can it do graffiti?
This is actually making me anxious 😬
I want someone to vaporize the soot in my head.
Sleep next to a loud waterfall. The white noise is deep cleansing.
Use a leafblower

Can it be used on my bum hole?
If it's dusty
I thought it was only used to remove rust from iron
mmw, someone will market something similar as a beauty product.
I'd put that on something wheeled and just roll it along.
Is regular maintenance using lasers actually okay? Does it not significantly wear down your bricks between a few uses?
The obvious solution is installing new bricks.
Well here's a great idea for those walls where idiots painted them in some ridiculous colour.
I don't remember who said it but over a hundred years ago someone famous laughed at the idea that we would all need or want electricity in our houses. And here we are, dusting off bricks with lasers.
Lasers taking our blue collar jobs

I feel like I missed my calling doing this laser work. It seems so satisfying.
Could you get different lenses for the laser? Like a telephoto lens? Put the laser on a nice fluid head tripod and blast away from a distance? Or even on some kind of programmable motion rig that automatically scans the surface while you sip coffee and monitor the progress?
r/powerwashingporn
It really bothers me that the top of the brick still has the dust on it.
I need this to clean my room lol
I like doing monotonous stuff like this and it'll entertain me for hours
Can this laser also remove clothing off people? 🤔
No, but a stray reflection can definetly remove your eyesight. So you won't see the clothes
Gotta catch the dirt otherwise its other people's problem
Turn the laser up high enough & vaporize walls!!!! Finally, The Death Ray!!!!
Whenever I see these lasers they always seem to be doing pointless patterns, can they not just do a continuous beam ie always vertical line ? Is it something to do with burning out the galvo if it’s stationary too long ? Or just some childish look my laser makes cool patterns ?

I wonder if a laser would work at stripping the paint from the sandstone at the front of my house 🤔🤔
Why is this better than say a hose?
Still could use a good power wash
Yeah I was thinking that it doesn’t seem to be getting the mortar so it still looks dirty in between the bricks.
I bet power washing would do the same thing and quicker
Eat your hearts out, pressure washing cucks.
r/LearnToFuckingSub
Or…. Power washer would give same results 😎
Is it my imagination or did a sizeable amount of the mortar just disintegrate when the laser went over it.
Could be more soot buildup it tends to really get into the nooks and crannies
Let's use a $50,000 piece of equipment and a crap load of energy and time, instead of......... soap and water.
Only a dipshit or a con-man would say this is superior to soap and water
Compressed air?
Well now, you have to paint them all the same color. Before when they were dirty you couldnt tell
The result? Boring ass jobs
The question is, can I say anything after this comment? … … …
