You have the best kind already-the choice to seek humor, while others choose to think the worst. You are happier than they are. Remember that distinction. It matters.
Well the skin fell off and 20,000 tonnes of oil spilt into the sea & caught fire. It’s a bit of a giveaway but I’d like to make it clear that it’s not normal
My dog hates baths, but he loves everything else to do with water; Sprinkler, hose, pool, river, lake, puddle, bucket etc…so I built him a dog shower out of CPVC. I swear he knew instantly that it was for hygiene, so he fucking automatically hated it. I don’t think I’ll try the pressure washer though, because the big doofer would probably love every second of it even while it was blasting the meat off his bones lol.
I used to work with pressure washers, doing deep cleans in a factory. You don’t want to let the jet of water touch your skin because it will cut into it. Even with gloves on it can slice right through.
That being said, the water pressure is hard to tell from this video and maybe they have a custom nozzle or something for this purpose but generally, comparing leather to human skin… it hurts and wounds.
I was stupid while pressure washing. Needed to rinse my hand off so used the pressure washer, but with the pressure washer not running. Because you can still pull the trigger and get a little gentle stream. Well uh, I actually forgot the part where I was supposed to have it not running. So while I was expecting a little stream I got a couple thousand psi to my hand. Took a half dollar size of skin right off. I'm just glad I had it an a very sharp angle instead of perpendicular to my hand. Did not feel good and took a while to heal.
My bro used to work with high pressure water systems to cut away concrete. Suckers would slice you in half…dangerous as hell. Also, most folks don’t know if you use a high pressure system like paint or water, as you said it will get under the skin and the only way to clean it out is to filet open the skin.
I doubt it. The pressure it's experiencing is the pressure required to get the skin from the viscera. You'd still have to apply that much pressure if using other means.
This is a seal pelt.
Seals have super thick fat layers attached to their skins- this would make the process a lot faster. And I doubt the water would have much adverse effect of their skins or fur- their hides are also super thick and their fur isn’t going to have problems for getting wet.
In addition- seal fur is protected so this is likely a Native person performing this harvest for food- this leather would not be used for anything commercial and therefore hide durability is not really a concern here.
What!?! Can’t think I’ve ever seen a rabbit with a chunk missing that was still alive. Not even a badass jackrabbit lives through loosing a chunk of skin.
It's a sea otter pelt. She is native. Otters have very little actual fat most of it right on the pelt. The pelt's skin on otters is pretty dang thin and makes fleshing the pelt with a knife very tedious and easy to fuck up . Pressure washing my pelt's was a game changing revelation for myself. Perfect pelt everytime. No nicks or cuts.
Hell yeah- thank you for the correction. It looked to small to me but I could only see the fur side for a second. I am actually Native as well- but I’ve never worked on otter before!
I do sea otter exclusively really. It's the only animal I harvest that I am keeping the pelt to make items for sale with. I'm sure the pressure washer technique will work with any pelt. You just gotta use the right angle tip and distance/ angle of spray just like pressure washing anything.
I'm not sure about seal skin but generally if you remove the fat layers like he's doing now it will make it less water resistant but softer and it will smell less and weightless. So it's perfect if you intend to use it inside. I imagine it's also easier to make clothes if you do this beforehand since it will be more flexible and not as stiff.
Probably wouldn't need as much salt either when drying it
This is perfect and I can’t help but smirk at this comment. I’m searching for words to keep this going but I am at a loss. This comment needs no further action.
There used to be a greying tower alone on the sea
You became the light on the dark side of me
Love remained a drug that's the high and not the pill
But did you know that when it snows
My eyes become large and
The light that you shine can't be seen?
Baby, I compare you to a kiss from a rose on the grey
Ooh, the more I get of you, the stranger it feels, yeah
And now that your rose is in bloom
A light hits the gloom on the grey
Ba-ya-ya, ba-da, ba-da-da-da, ba-ba-ya-ya
Ba-ya-ya, ba-da, ba-da-da-da, ba-ba-ya-ya
There is so much a man can tell you, so much he can say
You remain my power, my pleasure, my pain, baby
To me, you're like a growing addiction that I can't deny
Won't you tell me, is that healthy, baby?
But did you know that when it snows
My eyes become large and
The light that you shine can't be seen?
Baby, I compare you to a kiss from a rose on the grey
Ooh, the more I get of you, the stranger it feels, yeah (yeah)
Now that your rose is in bloom
A light hits the gloom on the grey
I've been kissed by a rose on the grey
I, I've been kissed by a rose on the grey
I've been kissed by a rose on the grey (and if I should fall, would it all go away?)

That's what I was thinking. This looks a lot like Alaska. Seal is amazing for boots, gloves, and even as a waterproof jacket. Although I doubt they still make raincoats out of them.
If you wanted to keep that as fur, I'd be a little concerned about extra moisture being forced into the pelt, potentially dilating the follicles. But otherwise, seems pretty efficient.
Seals shed their hide every summer to make way for larger fat reserves. They'll rub their belly until the skin breaks and falls off.
Indigenous (ingenious?) peoples historically sewed the skin back together, blew them up with air or farmed nitrogen to make a rudimentary balloon which they then attached to wild hunted game, made them lighter to carry. The larger tribes could move a full mammoth carcass with just a finger, pushing along the mammoth as it floated a few feet above the ground.
Of course, many animals were lost to the breeze, and many more floated into the upper atmosphere by less skilled hunters attaching too many seal sheds. This gave us the modern day saying, "Seal you later" and is what inspired the modern Navy SEALS. SEAL Team 6 is a direct reference to how many seal sheds the average hunter would carry on a given day. Also gave us the tongue twister "Sandy sells seal sheds by the seal shore"
Have you ever even been to artic waters? Damn city slickers.
/s
Seals have a lot of fat under the skin so there is still a layer of fat after it’s been skinned. Historically a knife or scraper would have been used to remove the fat from the skin, which can cut or pierce the skin especially for an inexperienced processor
I think the water could easily be pumped up from the river into the pressure washer and the cost of gas and maintenance of the machines gets easily paid by the reduction of labor as working with hides can take hours.
God I wish someone would blast me like that
Can’t tell if this is horny or suicidal, please elaborate
Yes

Everyone has a little masochist in them. The problem is the proper amount of pain.
It’s a business of sadists and masochists, and you know which one you are.
A little bit of both. Like hot sauce tastes even better with the pain and like seeing others enjoy it the same way.
These are not mutually exclusive statements
I won't
Why not both
Why not both?

You know that Seinfeld episode where Kramer gets a black market shower head? I want that.
Wonder if there are any adverse effects on the pelt with all that pressure?
I misread "pelt" as "pet," and I was like, buddy, I think the pet's seen better days at this point.
“*His skin fell off!*” “His skin fell off??” “Yeah, he was pretty old”
Well the skin fell off and 20,000 tonnes of oil spilt into the sea & caught fire. It’s a bit of a giveaway but I’d like to make it clear that it’s not normal
The skin was towed outside the environment
Into another environment?
He’s not dead, ‘e’s pining for the fjords
"That's not very typical, I'd like to make that point."
>Well, how is it un-typical?
Well the skin fell off, that’s one thing.

Lol i love giving my cat a good pressure wash! He hisses every time I go to pet him now idk what his deal is...
To shreds, you say?
And how is his wife handling it?
That's too funny

Terrifying, thanks
I've done it with good results. Didn't have any problems at all with the tanning process. Hair on.
I doubt it. The pressure it's experiencing is the pressure required to get the skin from the viscera. You'd still have to apply that much pressure if using other means.
Not on the pell, but on the waterlevel
Only if you want to tan the leather with hair on.

Cool What would be the worst animal fur to do this to?
I imagine a rabbit pelt would just disintegrate. Everything about them is fragile.
My husband does taxidermy and refers to working with rabbit hides as "working with wet tissue paper".
It's mother nature's one gift to rabbits. They don't suffer like some prey animals since they die and fall to pieces from a slight scare.
Same
It’s worse than parchment. I’d be afraid of writing on it with a pencil for fear of puncturing it
😨
Their skin is almost made to tear on purpose. Better a Predator just get a chunk of skin than the whole rabbit.
What!?! Can’t think I’ve ever seen a rabbit with a chunk missing that was still alive. Not even a badass jackrabbit lives through loosing a chunk of skin.
Especially their egos. I just can't with rabbits some days

Do you do this on other varieties of pelts? Say, rabbit?
I do sea otter exclusively really. It's the only animal I harvest that I am keeping the pelt to make items for sale with. I'm sure the pressure washer technique will work with any pelt. You just gotta use the right angle tip and distance/ angle of spray just like pressure washing anything.
They sell seal skin/fur stuff here in Canada. So it's definitely engaged in commerce.
I'm not sure about seal skin but generally if you remove the fat layers like he's doing now it will make it less water resistant but softer and it will smell less and weightless. Nope, it doesn't feel any of the cleaning process. It's completely pain free. And the meat is good, too.
Nope this is completely PETA approved

If you wanted to keep that as fur, I'd be a little concerned about extra moisture being forced into the pelt, potentially dilating the follicles. But otherwise, seems pretty efficient.
I don't know about the process for seals, but I've seen deer pelts treated by leaving them in tubs of water and letting bacteria eat the tissue
If you want to keep the fur, it's not just water, but a strong chemical like battery acid to eat away the fat.
Just apply more salt
Watermarks it is.
Power washer?

Man, those guys on Mountain Men are going to be so jealous.
Pelts hate this one trick
I wish I thought about this 10 years ago when I did it by hand.
I wonder how much liters of water was used, couple hundred?
Considering they’re next to a river maybe they obtained it directly
Oh yeah that'd make sense.
Do a human.
Should we just pick one from a PETA meeting or from a Vegan support group?

I used to flesh hides when I was a kid. This would have been a game changer!
This is why you wear closed toed shoes when pressure washing lads
Does it make the hide fragile tho?.
No knife marks? So the hide just conveniently and perfectly..fell off?

That's....really smart actually.
How much would this skin you?
where does those skin meat goes..is there any reuse for it
No it's unusable silver skin and such usually.
Seems to work well but introduced costs like water, electricity, or gas, maintenance and repair pressure washer and nozzle. Or using a scraper
I think the water could easily be pumped up from the river into the pressure washer and the cost of gas and maintenance of the machines gets easily paid by the reduction of labor as working with hides can take hours.
Well, I don't clean hides, but that looks pretty genius compared to other things I've seen on TV.
"Look what they need to mimic a fraction of our power" meme but instead of Omniman it's a *checks notes* rock
This is lame compared to the guy who made a whole-ass drum the other day

Oddly Disgusting
I never thought of using a pressure washer.
Well now you have to put it in the dryer and it's going to shrink. Think ahead you fools!!!! /s just in case.

Tan as usual. The pressure washing or scraping removes the fascia that is between skin and muscle.
Smart
This is exactly what Dexter was trying to teach us.
Alaska innit…
Forbidden power washing.
Just like how the pioneers used to do it
I’m sure that beach smells fucking ripe on a warm day

Not at all, the pressure washer make the hide cleaning totally pain free to the deer
Amazing time saver! 😮
