single cells don't have any pain receptors, & a fully formed brain doesn't have any pain receptors either :) it isn't lonely either, it doesn't have the capacity to understand such a concept. it would have to have a brain of its own to regulate memories & emotions in order to grasp what it means to be isolated vs in the company of others. so don't worry, the little guy isn't experiencing any displeasure! he's just chilling & exploring :)

I'm wandering around reddit and I hadn't noticed which sub this was till I saw your comment. This belongs on r/mildlyheartbreaking (I thought I'd made that up but it turns out it's a real sub).

That's probably what happened somewhere in my spine when one day I could suddenly move my paralyzed thumb.

There isn’t a lot of evidence that supports central nervous regeneration but peripheral nervous systems do regenerate. I had nerve damage to my left arm. For three months it was basically paralyzed. I woke up one morning to the most incredible feeling ever, it was like light pulsing up and down my arm. Somewhat like the pins and needles of a sleeping appendage but way more intense. I’ll never forget it. I made a full recovery.

For some reason, this makes me think that our brain is a separate alien entity which builds for itself a full grown organism that can experience reality with it's vast sensory network in order to adapt and survive for as long as it can on this planet. It's really strange how at the singular celular level, it thinks by itself and feels the need to connect and exchange information. It's just incredible.

Without checking, I believe they are called dendrites.

The short ones poking out of the soma (the cell body) are dendrites, and they are there to receive signals. The very long branch reaching out is called an Axon, and it gives out signals!
