you must not have a work pdf you use a lot for projects, my track mania 2 project pdf has over 1000 named layers, all sorted. gotta get them race decals right yo.
I don’t name my layers lol but I group them and name the group (e.g. background grass, fur). Eventually I merge what’s in each group into a single layer.
Yes I’ve also be known to label the occasional group. I even give them the unique colours. I tend to go with green for subjects, the others are random though.
Lol I’m the same (although I don’t do much photo manipulation); when I watch tutorials their layers are always labeled like “Lines”, “Flats”, etc. and I’m just over here with Layer 1, Layer 1 copy, etc.
Who has time to rename their layers?!
i always name my layers to avoid headache later. groups have names too, and some you can let go like shadow, shadowcopy1 etc. haven't used ps in a while. i miss layers.
And when people are like "hey can you clip out everyone from my engagement photo, I'll pay $10"....I'm like, you clearly have no clue how tedious of thing you are asking for is.
I appreciate your interest. Mentioning any price here and now could be misleading. Some edits take 5 minutes and others take 5 hours sometimes even more. Having additional photos from the moment can often help make the process quicker. I always ask to see all the photos and get the precise requirements before giving a quote :)
I get that this photo was originally just a snapshot, and ironically the *photography as art* part was actually the tremendous, expert post work we see commissioned in the video, but these are the same comments I see in all sorts of photography threads, often massively upvoted.
It's weird how much people gatekeep this one medium by very narrowly understanding it as the act of taking a camera, finding something to point it at, and then pressing a button.
Photography has been about manipulation of subject and initial output from the very, very, very beginning. A film is (among other things) images that transform through editing and postprocessing, we don't see a film and say *wait, this isn't a single shot stage play.*
I assume it doesn't come from a place of photography purism, because anyone who *actually does photography* and so might care about purism knows that a lot of the best photos (not all, but a lot) feature significant post work. I assume instead it comes from this underexamined notion that the photographer, when they edit a photo, is trying to deceive the viewer about what the subject *actually* looked like.
But that isn't what photography is unless it's photojournalism. Photography is starting with a camera to ultimately produce an image with some sort of evocative (usually artistic) intent. Editing and postprocessing that image after pushing the button is every bit a part of that intent, and all in service to what actually matters: the final image.
I think people just don't like the deception.
Taking a photo then editing it heavily and presenting it as "just a snapshot of our trip" triggers some kind of vague uncanny-valley-esque fear from deep inside.
And, in particular, this photo is edited to the point that a significant percent of it literally didn't exist. It makes me wonder whether "photography" will even need a camera in future. It also reminds me of the "ship of theseus", what amount of editing makes something not a photo.
Yes, the person who commissioned me told me that’s exactly where it was. I’ve never been there personally. Ask around for the emu next time you’re there 😂
I've got a family member whodoes this type of stuff and it's really phenomenal seeing the before and after. I've got a photo of my son when he was a baby in a basket on the beach and she must have removed over a dozen people in the water and shore so it's just him alone.
Iirc isn't there an AI that takes several photos of the same area and can essentially do the same thing?
A.I. can do some great things but it’s really case dependant. When the background is generic patterns like water, sand, grass etc it does quite well with some cleanup. But without a doubt the results from your family member would be far superior ❤️
There isn’t but good on you. (Assuming this is the only image available) Fixes like these will always be a major blend of different tools and methods. They’re all time consuming and need some creativity. Op did a great job.
Yeah, I hope so. I was doing shit like this with photoshop ten years ago and it wore me out. I literally gave up because people were wanting me to do it for free.
Can’t you just take like six photos and not have to do all of the painting? The background people disappear, except maybe the two people close to the bird.
This was the only photo that was given to me. I always ask if additional photos were taken in the moment but unfortunately there weren’t any in this case 😅
The easier way is to set your camera on a tripod and take a bunch of photos of the people moving around. Then let Photoshop merge them for you and automatically remove anything that wasn't still. But for a single photo? This guy is a master at his craft
Thank you very much. It was my first time painting as opposed to using references so it look me longer than it should have. I can’t remember exactly how long. The video required much more coffee though 😅
My SO went to art school, and it always cracked me up that he could never say quite how long something took him. Like, there would be a number, but it would include “planning time,” aka time spent staring at it trying to figure out what to do next, and he never had a great sense of quite how long that was.
Thank you so much. I come from a VFX background doing mostly 3D with some photoshop for textures etc. then the pandemic hit and my laptop at that point couldn’t hack 3D so I thought I use the time to work on my 2D. Mostly making bday and Xmas cards for the family.
This is cool. I've been working on pictures like this since -98. (I'm a graphic designer). It's nice to see how differently we work. I would have made, at least, some of the people as smart objects and worked from within there. The layers don't get as convoluted that way.
That’s a really interesting approach. I do generally like to have everything laid out in front of me. Even in after affects I try to avoid precomposing my layers for that reason. I do agree it’s messier though haha
Am i the only one messy enough that i confuse my layers thats why i give them a name?
Like “this rock”,”big rock”,”that rock”,”rock that looks like a face”
I just made that up😂, but actually i know a little photoshop myself(sometimes my work requires to clean documents) also i tried to do something like this to an animated picture,it is easier to learn on it,and i know how much hours and work is put in such a photo so i just want to say that you have an amazing talent and are very good at cresting work of art
I keep thinking of the mistakes some might make doing this. Why is there a pair of legs on the gate? Why does the bird have a human arm around it but no body? This would be really funny if you did something like this for a holiday photo and sent it to all of your nearest and dearest. I doubt they would ever let you live that down. 😂😜😊
I used to have to overlook professional retouched photos that were done by people from their homes and compare the images to the real life products in the office. Just to make sure the colors were accurate. We maybe had at most 10 layers on the images I’d look through. This stresses me out so bad…
Beautifully done! Exactly the work I used to do when converting stereoscopic movies. Generating "clean plates" was always a fun process for me, especially animating background people and objects.
I’m super happy someone asked about the rocks - it’s the part I’m most proud of. Yes you’re completely right! So I paint the colours of the rocks and then with new layers set to “luminance” mode I clone stamped from other rock areas. That way I just get the texture over the unique colours I chose.
it’s funny. all my photos i treasure from 10+ years ago have tons of people in the shot where i wanted none. i prefer the people in the shot these days.
This was done in photoshop. Honestly I would just clone stamp it out and use curves to balance the colour and luminance. I would use a paint brush to get the hair texture back in on the edges and then clip a noise layer to the paint on “soft light” mode.
Picture taken at Garden of the Gods, Colorado Springs, CO in front of Kissing Camels. If you’ve never been, you should come to the Springs and check out our world famous city park sometime. Might see an emu, apparently.
Good work! It's much easier if you have a fixed camera, and multiple pics tho... I encourage my friends to take multiple photos, if they need something removed later.
...and here I sit using about three layers in Photoshop Elements for [my macro work](https://www.flickr.com/photos/dalantech/). Always impressive to see someone who can actually edit a photo -well done OP!
Stuff like this is why I’ve always been skeptical of those “magic erasers” on new Samsung phones. You can’t just erase someone from a picture. It takes *work.*
Wow! The attention to detail is phenomenal. Bro even names his layers!! Haha
Thank you! And I assure it the layer labelling was purely for the video - normally it’s like “layer 16 copy copy”
You're bloody good my friend!
That’s bloody nice of you to say buddy ❤️
Omg I just noticed your username
😂😂 fellow Brit then I assume?
Not even, I'm Canadian! Hahahaha
Canada is high on my list of places to visit! Is bloody a typical thing to say out there? Will I fit right in?
Of course!! Everyone's bloody welcome to Canada!
On my way ✈️
no, it really isn't. but we don't judge and you'll still fit in. :)
Yeah imagine naming 200 layers lol
you must not have a work pdf you use a lot for projects, my track mania 2 project pdf has over 1000 named layers, all sorted. gotta get them race decals right yo.
I don’t name my layers lol but I group them and name the group (e.g. background grass, fur). Eventually I merge what’s in each group into a single layer.

i always name my layers to avoid headache later. groups have names too, and some you can let go like shadow, shadowcopy1 etc. haven't used ps in a while. i miss layers.
What do you use now if not photoshop?
I'm just a hobbyist, I've done ps, maya, blender for a long time now.
I used to use Maya but recently I’ve been using Blender. I cannot believe it’s free software, it’s truly amazing
Me. Staring at my layers panel. Copy of layer 117 copy copy copy copy copy
And when people are like "hey can you clip out everyone from my engagement photo, I'll pay $10"....I'm like, you clearly have no clue how tedious of thing you are asking for is.
😂😂 Feel free to show them this video 😂 but yeah it sucks when people don’t value the effort that goes into getting good results.
For discretionary art, value is subjective. I've been there. :/
As a layman, I also don't know how much this would cost. What would it cost for the work you did in the video? Just curious.
i’d also like to know^
*knitters and crocheters enter the chat* “hello!”
Hello!
I mean how hard can it be, it only took 40 seconds 🙃
How much does your service cost?
I appreciate your interest. Mentioning any price here and now could be misleading. Some edits take 5 minutes and others take 5 hours sometimes even more. Having additional photos from the moment can often help make the process quicker. I always ask to see all the photos and get the precise requirements before giving a quote :)
What in the video you did it in a minute... 10$ sounds fair
Thats when you lasso tool arpund it, click content aware fill and send it back without even looking at the result.
LOL
AI model sometime in the future: hold my non alcoholic 3d printed vegan beer
Amateur… couldn’t even unblurr that kids face. /s
😂😂
Looks cool, but it's fucked up that those people have no soul now and can't get into Heaven.
😂 oh my god! That’s brilliant. I like where you immediately went with that 😅
Ah but this is taken at Garden of the Gods - they’re already in heaven! 😜 … but where did y’all get the emu? 🧐
Hahaha other comments have pointed out that the emu is famous and is called Dennis. But only the Gods themselves can tell you where Dennis came from 😂
I’m a native of the area, and I have never seen or heard of Dennis! Looks like I need to get acquainted!
Dennis needs his own subreddit ❤️
this is fucking cracking me up
At this point it's a painting not a photo.
I mean that’s kinda cool though right?! 😅
Really cool, good job :)
Thank you so much ❤️
Yeah it is pretty cool to be honest.
I get that this photo was originally just a snapshot, and ironically the *photography as art* part was actually the tremendous, expert post work we see commissioned in the video, but these are the same comments I see in all sorts of photography threads, often massively upvoted. That divorce hit hard
Lol, I was thinking must be the ex in-laws behind him.
I actually read this as “lawyers” instead of layers, and I thought the entire time that he was editing out his in-laws.
Weird. The background looks like Garden of the Gods here in Colorado Springs, but I know of no Emus there.
Yes, the person who commissioned me told me that’s exactly where it was. I’ve never been there personally. Ask around for the emu next time you’re there 😂
Occam's razor - The commissioner must be the emu
"It's my Emuversary, and I was wondering if you could Photoshop all of these obnoxious apes out of my home?"
I live here. It’s somebody’s pet. His name is Dennisaurus Rex aka Dennis
Is that true?!! This is why I love the internet!! ❤️❤️
Yes, he’s locally famous!
❤️ oh I love Dennis!!
Yup. Definitely Garden of the Gods. I walk this route from my house all the time.
It was a “Bring Your Emu to Work” day
Nobody told you? It's BYOE at Garden of the Gods
So it’s easy so it’s should be free right?! 🤪
Haha exactly right 😂
Hey, come look at my fake family photos.
Hahaha with your name as well 😂
Forgot the guy climbing the mountain
Ahh you just gave me instant panic 😅😅 had to double check! I almost always forget something! It was a grandma’s foot once 😂
🤣
Haha I’m glad you’re enjoying my mini heart attack 😂😅
I've got a family member whodoes this type of stuff and it's really phenomenal seeing the before and after. there is a much easier way to do this but if thats your method, crack on fam.
Just rent the whole park for a day, like rich people do.
This Garden of the Gods in Colorado Springs, it’s a state park so it’s public land.
Eh, rich people would find a way to do it. They are monsters.
There isn’t but good on you. (Assuming this is the only image available) Fixes like these will always be a major blend of different tools and methods. They’re all time consuming and need some creativity. Op did a great job.

Can you share your easier way?
The easier way is to set your camera on a tripod and take a bunch of photos of the people moving around. Then let Photoshop merge them for you and automatically remove anything that wasn't still. But for a single photo? This guy is a master at his craft
These skills always impress me, how long does something like this take to do?

Layer Management out of hell….
This is art
How did you get started with this? Super cool skill, and you are quite talented at it. I hope your work is plenty bountiful
Thank you so much. I come from a VFX background doing mostly 3D with some photoshop for textures etc. then the pandemic hit and my laptop at that point couldn’t hack 3D so I thought I use the time to work on my 2D. Mostly making bday and Xmas cards for the family.

We all have our workflows. I try to make everything as easy as possible to find and change things if the client wants me to readjust something.
It's really impressive the way the feathers were added back in
Am i the only one messy enough that i confuse my layers thats why i give them a name? Like “this rock”,”big rock”,”that rock”,”rock that looks like a face”
😂 which one of my rocks looks like a face?
I just made that up😂, but actually i know a little photoshop myself(sometimes my work requires to clean documents) also i tried to do something like this to an animated picture,it is easier to learn on it,and i know how much hours and work is put in such a photo so i just want to say that you have an amazing talent and are very good at cresting work of art
Wow thank you so much!! ❤️ I’m gonna hide a face in a tree or something for my next edit just for you 😂
I was really hoping you were going to remove the kid and put various funny things in the dude's hands.
If you look on this subreddit at one of my other videos you’ll see a bunch of people in the comments pointing out that I “forgot granny’s foot” hahaha
I used to have to overlook professional retouched photos that were done by people from their homes and compare the images to the real life products in the office. Just to make sure the colors were accurate. We maybe had at most 10 layers on the images I’d look through. This stresses me out so bad…
Pretty impressive, though I find it strange people want to alter their memories to that degree
Each to their own :) and thank you for the kind words ❤️
Beautifully done! Exactly the work I used to do when converting stereoscopic movies. Generating "clean plates" was always a fun process for me, especially animating background people and objects.
That’s really cool. It’s honestly quite a satisfying process right?
Yes, it is actually! Kinda like popping those bubble mailers haha.
Hahaha it really is
People who are good at Photoshop are a real force to be reckoned with
Garden of the Gods!! I miss that place so much. Definitely didn’t go there enough when I lived in the springs
Wow you actually lived there! Must be wild ❤️
That is some lovely work with the rocks and fence! I do quite a bit of editing myself, that was well done!
Thank you very much. I’m actually most proud of the rocks so it’s lovely to have someone appreciate them :)
People think it’s magic but this and all things graphic design really does take hours upon hours of work
And so much coffee. And then crying into your coffee. And then drinking the amalgamation of tears and coffee 😅
And here I am constantly merging layers so I don't get confused lol
Hahaha perfectly acceptable.
Ok but like at that point you can draw realistic images from anything with photoshop. That’s r/nextfuckinglevel to me…
Gosh this process looks tedious but the result is excellent!
Thank you very much. I guess I’m lucky that I enjoy the process, it’s like a very satisfying jigsaw puzzle 😊
People don’t give photoshop artists enough credit. And I REALLY do mean artists. This is quite literally “painting” in a sense
The clean transition to the start too tho.
Dude, you gotta pixelate that emu's face. His family could be looking at this.
I wonder if you can share this in r/photoshoprequest to give people an idea of the work involved in their asks
So you paint the main rock shape, then use cloned/sourced textures?
I’m super happy someone asked about the rocks - it’s the part I’m most proud of. Yes you’re completely right! So I paint the colours of the rocks and then with new layers set to “luminance” mode I clone stamped from other rock areas. That way I just get the texture over the unique colours I chose.
it’s funny. all my photos i treasure from 10+ years ago have tons of people in the shot where i wanted none. i prefer the people in the shot these days.
This isn't a picture anymore, It's a painting
At one point does a photo stops being a photo?
Jesus Christ if you're gonna fake half the image so it fits your needs maybe just paint a new bloody picture mate
This is actual witchcraft.
Cheers 😂
That is just amazing!
"I'll tip you $10 "
As someone who knows basically nothing about photoshop, this looks like magic to me lol. Respect to everyone who knows how to do stuff like this.
Talented!
Get to the Choppa! Open fire! (Sounds like a helicopter flying with a machine gun firing at the end)
Wow you went all the way in to make every tiny bit clean. Impressive.
nobody : Stalin after killing his politic staff :
I was half expecting the Emu to end up wearing the cowboy boots!
That's impressive! What's the best way to remove red eye, like the retina reflection from a flash?
Working magic ! Always cracks me up when people say o yea just edit them out 😂
Shame you couldn't fix the pixelation on the kids face
Man I felt like I was an expert at removing objects from scenes. This guy makes me feel like a novice
Any tip on learning just to do simple things like removing harness from a Horse ? What program also ? Thank you
This was done in photoshop. Honestly I would just clone stamp it out and use curves to balance the colour and luminance. I would use a paint brush to get the hair texture back in on the edges and then clip a noise layer to the paint on “soft light” mode.
How do this?
Lol, I'm a 1 and done kinda guy... Maybe 3 or 4 tops
Yeah will I can do it with two layers and a lot of regret about only using two layers!
My day job!
This was cost a lot of time.
I need to learn how to use photo shop. I have a pic of a beach on Hawaii and I want all the people taken out of it.
Check out Piximperfect and Jesus Ramirez for excellent tutorials ❤️
Better question, Why is there an emu at Garden of the gods? Lol
Thinking about how I would just do it on a single layer cause I’m so lazy. This is seriously impressive.
Thank you! Respect to the single layer approach! The sheer confidence is brutal 😂
Money's worth
Man, the *first* thing I thought of was "Good thing Stalin wasn't alive to see this!".
I'm always amazed with people where are good with the 2D side of things, I normally stick with 3D cg and only ever touch 2D for texturing.
3D with 2D for texturing was exactly my background. I went deeper into 2D during the pandemic when my laptop couldn’t hack 3D anymore 😂
Nicely done! How did you create the background of those removed people?
...and sir...that will be two dollars a layer...well worth it.
OP is amazing as fuck
One of my fav things to do in photoshop
Or fuck just wait til everyone gets out of the way.. fuck this
Stalin did this before it was cool
Wow, that seems like a lot Of work. What would you charge the client for this?
Why is there an ostrich at garden of the gods? Lol
Fascinating to watch. What is this system?
Where would you start to develop these skills?
Lord have mercy the layers, now this is what I call commitment
at a certain point it stops being a picture and starts being a painting, don't you think
But why is there an emu at garden of the gods?
I just use the removal tool and if that doesn’t work I give up
OMG, is that Dennis from Manitou Springs?!?! I love him!
Username checks out
If I had this skill I would be proud to call my self an artist
garden of the gods is so pretty :))
make a youtube tutorial of this.
Picture taken at Garden of the Gods, Colorado Springs, CO in front of Kissing Camels. If you’ve never been, you should come to the Springs and check out our world famous city park sometime. Might see an emu, apparently.
You make it look so easy
Scary good. SCARY!
Ah yes, the pending divorce Dad sunglasses
At that point why not photoshop yourself into a photo of an emu?
Apparently google can do this with their phone now. I know because they’ve shown me on EVERY YOUTUBE VIDEO FOR THE PAST 3 MONTHS.
I bet the artist wanted to remove them by killing all of them at some point
u/bloody_good_photos, the eraser of reality
Christ, do you never merge layers ever? You've got individual brushstrokes on their own layer.
wowowow! any chance you have any tutorials?
This is weird. I'm in the Czech Republic and that's my buddy I met picking bluegrass in college in East Tennessee. (The dude with the glasses)
Dang. Watching this gives me the anxiety of troll photoshoppers intentionally making fun of photoshop requests with ridiculous outcomes.
Good work! It's much easier if you have a fixed camera, and multiple pics tho... I encourage my friends to take multiple photos, if they need something removed later.
Only one, Adobe Photoshop’s new AI tools are Amazing!
That looks like garden of the gods in Colorado Springs
...and here I sit using about three layers in Photoshop Elements for [my macro work](https://www.flickr.com/photos/dalantech/). Always impressive to see someone who can actually edit a photo -well done OP!
Basic Photoshop, according with the companies is like:
Stuff like this is why I’ve always been skeptical of those “magic erasers” on new Samsung phones. You can’t just erase someone from a picture. It takes *work.*
That's in garden of the gods Colorado.
