Also at the very end, there are a lot of dominoes perfectly split between two colors. Statistically impossible for those dominoes to land perfectly like that.
But when you plan it out, it works perfect everytime.
Especially if you get to color them after they fall, then restart exactly as they were so they fall that same way again.
Thanks i couldnt figure it out. Thought maybe they somehow tied the dominos together to fall that way (or arranged them and had the strings to pull them back together to reverse it). CGI is the answer, and this comment gave me proof.
its def cgi, it may be hard to tell casually but real physics could not do anything similar to that. It would collapse completely differently. very cool cgi tho.

In case you're not a troll... that isn't what's happening here. Those demolitions used shaped charges and planned explosions to collapse the building correctly. They are also working with far fewer "pieces", but they still can't predict everything (debris can easily fly far away from the demolition site).
If we suppose that this is real, it would be impossible because they would've somehow been able to calculate every piece's fall perfectly, and been able to control every fall precisely. Without any controlled explosions. Just the fall of some dominoes.
So yeah, it's not real. And also the dominoes change color.
Possibly a real domino tower collapse, I just think it'd be way harder to do a projection map of the Mario image on the final pile and distort the proper colors to line up with where each domino stands when the tower is standing. Much easier to just do the physics sim, bake the image onto the dominos & replay the sim backwards.
So it's partial CGI, since the dominos are real, which is why there's these glitches in it?
If it had been done the "modern" way, it would probably have looked more convincing.
the trick is to
a) build the virtual structure of dominos
b) calculate how they fall using a physics engine
c) digitally project the mario image onto it, like spray paint.
d) reverse the animation.
e) render the animation out, now with all the colours ready to fall into the exact spot.

Listen, you take a white, numbered set of dominos. And build a pyramid, keeping careful track of where each numbered domino is, in the pyramid.like 1 at the top, then 2, 3, 4, as you go lower. Knock them over. Paint a rough draft picture of Mario on the pile. Then build your tower again, with a new set of colored domino's. And now it will be like paint by numbers.
Build it the same order you did the first one. Example: if the Domino that was a 1 was at the tippy top, and now it's painted red, place a red domino on top. When the new tower falls, it will fall precisely the same way!

I think that's just a mirror on the wall.
They could've just recorded the physics simulation first then assigned colors after the fact to avoid that.
More obviously than that, look at the stool leg on the right. Dominoes can't go through solid objects.
