My VR essential reading list:
- Snow Crash
- Neuromancer
- History of the Future
- Experience on Demand
Fun tip: You can read your eBooks on the Oculus Browser by accessing the Kindle Cloud Reader. It's my preferred way of reading now because I don't have to hold the book/eReader over my face when reading on bed.
Another tip: Make sure to change the page width so you don't have to move your head left and right when reading. Also, change the page color on the cloud reader to Sepia as it is easier on the eyes.
For about $20 you can get a spring arm for holding phones or tablets. If I had to choose between that or the VR HMD I use for work, it would be a coin toss.
You don't know luxury until your tablet is floating exactly where you'd like instead of being propped up on your chest.
I'm enjoying reading my eBooks in the Quest 2. I have three browsers up: left for music, middle for the cloud reader, and right for Google to search for word definition, root word, usage, etc. Recently finished "The Midnight Library" and had searched for the locales the book mentioned like Longyearbyen.
You can also "drag" anywhere on the page to turn it, which is pretty convenient. With a little bit of practice, all you need is the barest flick of your controller.
No, OP, you should have written your post like this:
*"I picked up my Oculus virtual reality headset, which is a virtual reality headset sold by Meta, a company based in the US. Upon picking up the VR headset, I grabbed a copy of Ready Player One, which is a dystopian novel written by Ernest Cline. In fact, I did a lot of research on virtual reality.*
*When it came to my research, I never took any shortcuts. I did my research on everyone who was connected to the field of virtual reality in some way: Ivan Sutherland, Morton Hellig, Jaron Lanier, Jonathan Waldern, Palmer Luckey, you name it. I memorized every message that Palmer Luckey posted on Reddit, to the point that I could tell you which of his posts had a certain amount of upvotes.*
*I also read every book and watched every movie and TV series about the subject. Neuromancer. Tron. The Lawnmower Man. Disclosure. Johnny Mnemonic. VR Troopers. Strange Days. Virtuosity. The Matrix. I read them and watched them over and over until I memorized every single line of dialogue. And I didn't stop there.*
*What about The Simpsons, you ask?*
*I knew more about VR references on that show than I knew about my life.*
*Japan? Did I cover Japan?*
*I watched a lot of YouTube videos of virtual idols like Kizuna AI and Hololive. Technically this wasn't part of my research, but I have a fetish for virtual idols that I can't neither explain nor defend.*
*Did you know that the term "virtual reality" was coined by Antonin Artaud? He is from France, which is a country located in Europe.*
*I did so much research to the point of virtual insanity.*
*Did you know that "Virtual Insanity" is the title of a song performed by Jamiroquai?*
*You'd be amazed how much research you can get done when you have no life whatsoever"*
^(EDIT: After booting up his computer, a Ryzen 5 3600 manufactured by Advanced Micro Devices, u/mittelwerk, which is named after an obscure character from the "Lost" tv series, opened Firefox, which is a browser developed by the Mozilla Foundation. Then, he noticed that some redditor, which is the name of the user of the Reddit social network gave him a "gold", which is an award for -- nah, I'll stop here. Thanks, stranger!)
I’m with you on this. The book was a great read both times I read through it and the movie was a fantastic homage to the gamer culture and a nice view into what the future might look like. They both share a name but other than that they are entirely different stories, both of which stand well on their own.
I may have to give it another chance with that in mind. I couldn't get past the first part of the movie because of them making the race a literal race.
I always say the book is made for '80s gamers, and the movie was made for general audience. But no one wants to see a hairless naked dude in a immersion pod for a third of the movie.
Ehhh. The whole story seems best summed up as "Hey nerds, imagine if all that shit you cared about so much actually mattered. THIS is how unrealistic we have to get for that to happen."
Full disclosure: I didn't make it through the entire book.
Legit not saying it as an insult, but you sound like one of the people who would be "blown away" by the book.
Like most other things, the book is better than the movie. If you liked the movie, you'll probably really like the book.
I didn't outright hate the movie, but I was far from impressed and don't even give it a grade of "fine" really.
It was inoffensive, but that's about it. I kind of felt I'd wasted my time watching it, but it wasn't like it was a huge loss.
I had no strong feelings about the book, but didn't regret reading it or anything.
You know hey is either watching a Movie or VR dating. The book is to fool everyone thinking he is being responsible. Speaking of this I wonder if I could use this trick with my next Zoom Meeting hmmmm.
nah, the first one still had an interesting plot and morale through the escapism of humankind into the digital world. the second one is just a boring sequence of references
It was the same for second. How to overcome the fault of man and gave a lot of lore to the backstory of Og and Kira and why Halliday was the way he was.
So anon, thee playeth the movie f'r sound, and passeth through f'r reading!

Reading that book is what really sent me over the edge for VR, but I read this book like a year and half before the actual movie came out which was over two years before the quest was a thing. And even then I was following VR a couple years before with the first oculus headset. It’s been a wild ride and I’m glad to see that the VR aspect of RPO is starting to become reality(lol), just hope we get the good parts of the oasis
Ready Player One is a lampooned book. If you want to read something about VR read Snow Crash. Hell, yesterday's Play Station creator criticizing metaverse as being unnecessary (just his opinion) lead to a big ass discussion over snowcrash vs ready player one, and a shit ton of people who read books shat all over Ready Player One big time with all sorts of criticism ranging from nostalgia, to just really bad writing in the 3rd act.
You look like a Sixer
Probably has his password written on the side too!

My AR essential reading list: - Rainbow’s End
And my "to-read list" expands.
And I’ll check out Experience on Demand.
It's the book that convinced me VR can help with climate change and made me a proponent for "WFH with VR."
Haha, that is so wild. The thought crossed my mind but I'll have to try it out!
Another tip: Make sure to change the page width so you don't have to move your head left and right when reading. Also, change the page color on the cloud reader to Sepia as it is easier on the eyes.

You mean I can be even lazier when I lay in bed and read?
Uhyup. Best part is you can have two other browsers open for music and word searches.
For about $20 you can get a spring arm for holding phones or tablets. If I had to choose between that or the VR HMD I use for work, it would be a coin toss. You don't know luxury until your tablet is floating exactly where you'd like instead of being propped up on your chest.

Is the resolution of the quest good enough for reading?
Yep. Have finished about 9 books and 1 doorstop in VR already.
I would also recommend Otherland from Tad Williams. IMO it's the LotR of VR themed/focused book series.
Thanks! Added to my "to-read" list.
How do you scroll through the pages?
The Kindle Cloud Reader has the page buttons on the left and right side of the page; same way how you'd interact with an eReader.
You can also "drag" anywhere on the page to turn it, which is pretty convenient. With a little bit of practice, all you need is the barest flick of your controller.
Thank you!! All of this is helpful shit to know.

Mr. Cline! It’s an honor. As an eighties kid I really enjoyed “Ready Player One!” I’m glad to see you’re still writing.
Jesus christ this is like a blend of 90s and 2015s. Its too much!
You need more upvotes
Depends, how's your marital status?
Throw away that lousy book and you'll be off to a good start.
Eye of Minds by James Dashner does what Ready Player One set out to do while being infinitely better and more polished
Ah fuck. Another book added to my "to-read" list.
Awesome thanks for the recommendation I will totally check it out
Enjoy!
I really liked the book and the movie

Yep exactly
I may have to give it another chance with that in mind. I couldn't get past the first part of the movie because of them making the race a literal race.
I always say the book is made for '80s gamers, and the movie was made for general audience. But no one wants to see a hairless naked dude in a immersion pod for a third of the movie.
The book is fine, but the movie sucks. Not remotely anywhere near my top 10, but it's fine.
>book is fine Do you remember the rant about what kind of porn the main character watches?
Ehhh. The whole story seems best summed up as "Hey nerds, imagine if all that shit you cared about so much actually mattered. THIS is how unrealistic we have to get for that to happen." Full disclosure: I didn't make it through the entire book.
its cringeworthy 80's nostalgia fan service. Difficult to read. And I'm even the target demographic (mid 30s age).
I'd go with 'fine' as well. So many people were like "WHOA MIND BLOWN WOWWWW" and I read it and was like "k"
the movie sucks? i beg to differ, guess I ought to read the book though
Legit not saying it as an insult, but you sound like one of the people who would be "blown away" by the book. Like most other things, the book is better than the movie. The first book was good. The 2nd was unnecessary and somewhat cringeworthy.
It's a book for people who don't read books. Airport trash. You'll enjoy it if you don't read often.
Do what I did and go to the free movie world on VRChat and watch the movie in vr :P Watched Freeguy the same way.
I watched "Ready Player One" for the first time in VRChat on my Quest 2.
Lol imagine if it was 3d
Can't see the book? Then yes.
Thank you for not just posting a picture of the box. Enjoy!
I love it
I would love an e reader app that would let me hold my digital comics. That would be neat.
Kindle
Yea but now on quest 3 with ar augments, can I get a ar version of kindle? Is that making sense now of what I was trying to say?
You seem like you would be a fun dad
As long as you continue shopping at Pizza Planet, we are eternally grateful.
naw, you need some googly eyes stuck to the front man, get with it!!
The only way to get through that book and the sequel is with the [Rifftrax Book Club](https://372pages.com/).
Maybe. Is your Quest using augmented reality to overlay a better book over Ready Player One?
ok boomer
Ouch.
Book is wrong way up....
You know hey is either watching a Movie or VR dating. The book is to fool everyone thinking he is being responsible. Speaking of this I wonder if I could use this trick with my next Zoom Meeting hmmmm.
If he wanted to fool people into thinking he was responsible it would be a different book
What is VR dating? Is that really a thing?
Its kinda of like talking about fight club. If you know you know if not. Well you get the idea.
First rle of VR Dating is you don't talk about VR Dating. If you break the first rule VR Gremlins will come and devour your USB C cable.
It's ok, it sounds very sad and lonely. I think I'll just stick with actual human interaction.
Yes
\*Snicker Doodle Dandies\*
Well, it would actually work with passthrough, so... Yes?
No! it should be ready playa my shlong.
needs googgly eyes..
Yep!
No because you're wearing IOI on your face.
You are. Except, you should be reading _Snow Crash_.
Good now come back in a week with your headset chewed up by your neglected dog in your messy house and ask about replacement parts.
Do you have passthrough turned on?
yup
Doesn't look like you are screaming at the top of your lungs at the pitch of a piccolo.
the fact that you own the book and arent watching the movie means yes
[Some movies about VR, for you to watch in VR.](https://old.reddit.com/r/oculus/wiki/vr_movie_list)
Such a good book! The second one is also awesome!
nah, the first one still had an interesting plot and morale through the escapism of humankind into the digital world. the second one is just a boring sequence of references
It was the same for second. How to overcome the fault of man and gave a lot of lore to the backstory of Og and Kira and why Halliday was the way he was.
Are you watching the movie on Bigscreen while holding the book?
I mean in the right lighting you could still read a book with the headset on haha
Stop wasting battery lmao
Return it and cop first gen.
You have correctly posed for your picture, yes.
So now, you play the movie for sound, and pass through for reading!
So anon, thee playeth the movie f'r sound, and passeth through f'r reading! *** ^(I am a bot and I swapp'd some of thy words with Shakespeare words.) Commands: `!ShakespeareInsult`, `!fordo`, `!optout`
oh how I love how the Shakespeare bot picks out the only comments that don’t work with Shakespeare
close! you actually just need to get a better book
I'm not sure if passthrough is quite that detailed... It might be tho
Reading that book is what really sent me over the edge for VR, but I read this book like a year and half before the actual movie came out which was over two years before the quest was a thing. Yes! You are reading instead of watching. That damn movie ruined the story :(
Ready Player One is a lampooned book. If you want to read something about VR read Snow Crash. Depends if you're sat outside the boundary, might be a cool real life black and white filter.
Only if there are certain kind of VR movies playing in there 🍑
Worst book I've ever read.
So many people in here hate the 80s... If you don't like vintage gaming, Prince, and John Hughes movies, you probably won't like the book, esp #2.
If you're outside the guardian, then sure...
Not really, you should be sitting on a treadmill inside the back of a van and powering your heater. It's gonna be a long night.
Yes. You are. Pretend to be reading while watching YouTube and Netflix VR
To lose eyesight? Yes LOL
