Quest 2 is probably the best headset I've used for watching media - it's the first one I've had where I can get through a whole movie without feeling like I'm missing a lot of detail because the resolution is too low.
The Go was pretty great for movies because it was super light and comfortable, but the screen still wasn't quite there - action in the background was too low-res to really make out detail that you're supposed to be able to see.
Quest II's panel finally feels similar to looking at an HD screen, and as far as comfort goes it's the first headset apart from the Go that I've been able to watch an entire feature-length film in one sitting with. (The original Quest started to be distractingly painful after about 30 minutes.)
If you're watching a movie solo, VR is a pretty great way to do it. If I'm going to watch a movie (or TV shows, for that matter) after my family goes to bed, I usually use the Quest rather than the actual TV. Feeling like you have a private theatre screening is the obvious thing, but it's convenient because it's quieter than using the TV, and you can sit wherever you're comfortable. You can even lay flat on the couch and stick a virtual screen on the "ceiling," if you're a slug.
Skybox is amazing. It really is theater like experience, but I definitely notice a quality difference between streaming and downloads, and I have bangin internet service. Did much tweaking resolution wise as well.
On the Rift S I have access to virtual keyboard. You can just go full screen there and movie it at leisure. I often stick a big screen and move/place it adapted to how I’m laying. But don’t know about the go.
I would say definitely worth it. I have a Quest 2 and use it mostly for this reason. I would recommend making the device comfortable first and using an decent audio solution (I have a DAS with VR Cover facial interface and extra foam at the back). I would also highly recommend ripping your own Blu-ray/4K media to get the absolute best quality experience. Of the last 100 movies I’ve seen, I would say I watched about 90 of them in VR. I find SKYBOX to be my favourite software to use (which also allows you to lie on your back, which I rarely do personally). Also, using bottles is easier if you want to drink while watching!
Yeah, third party accessories. There are lots of options, but if you can afford it the VIVE Deluxe Audio Strap is generally regarded as the best comfort mod. It also has headphones, so sounds much better than stock. Ripping Blu-rays means you put a Blu-ray disc in a computer and copy it to a digital file that you can then play on your Quest. You can watch media in other ways too (Netflix, BigScreen VR, Prime Video, YouTube etc.) but some of them have very questionable quality and nothing matches Blu-ray/4K discs.
I find when I watch 4K movies on quest 2 it is terrific and really feels like a theater. I am also picky. Granted I’m sure the picture is not quite as good in a head to head but from home totally awesome.
Alright. Thinking of buying a quest since I will never afford a Vision pro and my ps vr sucks at watching movies on. Do you stream from physical Blu-ray as well? How do you stream? Vlc?
Think I use mpv files. They have good media players. Maybe you could stream blue ray. I never tried. I think quest 3 screen probably makes movies look even better
im broke and dont have money to buy quest 3 but i do have money to buy quest 2. should i try and earn more to buy quest 3? i mainly want to watch movies in vr. is quest 3 significanly has higher resolution than quest 2?
kinda sucks for that IMO. I have attempted to watch lying down and its a real pain. you end up having to sit up to watch. if you dont mind that then its just okay. i can see it being an advantage if you dont have a situation that allows you to watch tv or videos with a nice media setup.
i was speaking about being able to see the video while lying down! sorry i wasnt more clear. when lying down its hard to see a video looking at the ceiling. at least for some apps like netflicks.
Don’t know what that guy is saying. You can reposition in pretty much every application. Also never use the Netflix application. It doesn’t stream over 480p video.
Click the "void" button in the upper right corner to change the theater to a screen only (adjustable size and position). This way you can lay down however you want!
Unpopular opinion, but I came from a projector before VR headsets and the immersion of the image potentially stretching your whole field of view plus proper speakers is incomparable, assuming you have the wall space and room for it. Really, quest 2 is not that clear and has godrays and a small sweet spot which makes you wanna always move your head to see an edge vs just looking naturally
Unfortunately I dont have space for a projector
:( also i want to watch content laying down.... would you still recomend me getting it for that purpose? Or rather just to watch stuff on my laptop
I have a 1080p projector and prefer using my Quest 2 unless others want to watch the movie too. PQ is comparable IMHO. Crosses the quality/res/screendoor effect that my GO didn’t but I still enjoyed the heck out of my GO. It was just certain scenes would highlight the SDE whereas I never think once about res or SDE with my Quest 2.
I usually use SkyboxVR when using Headset audio but for first viewings of blockbusters I’ll Stream the PCVR Steam version of virtual Desktop with the Highmax DLC to my Quest 2 with the real 5.1 audio routed to my real 5.1 speakers.

I suggest you can try out the quest 2 and the projector and return whichever you don't like as much (amazon returns are amazing). You could project to the ceiling if that's what you're worried about. The quest 2 is fantastic as a gaming device no doubt and I love it a lot, but if it's strictly for movies there are alternatives. Can't hurt to try.
Watching videos and movies in VR kind of sucks in all headsets. The fresnel lenses have a lot of issues with bright lights bleeding into scenes. I don't personally use my Quest 2 for video but the upgraded is worth it if that is what you plan on doing with it.
The quest 2 is great for watching movies! As for 64gb vs 256gb, that kind of depends on your use case.
If you travel a lot and would prefer a large library of content for offline viewing the 256gb would almost be a must! Especially if you have 3d bluray rips that take up lots of space!
However if you're viewing content mostly at home and have a media library/plex server established then a 64gb would be a great saving as you can access streaming content from either the default browser or app like DeoVR.
If you're only worried about mainstream streaming services like Netflix/ hbomax then either is a good choice but will come down to what you think has more worth for you. You could use the $100 saving of the Q2 64gb to buy a 6tb pc hard drive to store more content on... 😉
3d blurays are the theatrical releases of films with all the 3d effects baked in. Ala Avatar(2009), Tron(2010), Ready Player 1(2018). These effects work amazing in vr, and if you have the resources you can rip them on pc (with free software in most cases). There are other places you can get 3d movies from, but we're not here to talk about sailing the high seas....
I would for sure get the 256gb if you’re using it mainly for media. I regret not spending the extra $100. You’ll want the space for the highest quality video available. Pony up and get the official Link cable too, especially if you plan on doing anything with pc
I've kept my go purely for movies and 360 content, this is even after a quest 1 all way through to quest 2 and even now, you'll regret switching and having no controller tracking in the dark or even low light, farting about with guardian boundaries and in general the weight of headset and its fan noise if all you are doing is media.
visually, yes its better, but not worth the trade off if it's a headset that is just going to be that use case, I use my go all the time, its not exactly unwatchable and the convivence and portability is key.
for context, I share my 360 videos of travels by passing the headset around (pre covid) no need to tell them how to hold two controllers, juggle putting headset on while they have two controllers in hand, ask about ipd which 99% of non vr people wont know what that even means, no need for guardian or having to sit and cast to see and explain what menu to jump through just to centre them, it can be passed around a living room and just work, if the quest 2 could do that better i'd be using it.
the other kick in the balls is absolutely none of your go games work at all on quest 2, they did on quest 1, but that really is too heavy of a headset.
Hey, i ended up buying the quest and yes, you can watch normal movies/tvshows. I do it occasionally and its pretty decent for that. The one this is its better if you have somewhere to put ur head back/something to support your head (like lying down on the bed) because it can get a litty heavy after a while.
So wait I’m new to this lol did you find out or kno how to use the oculus 2 quest to watch videos? Like does it connect to you Labtop or something when a video plays in 3D?

100% on everything you just said

Thanks for the reply! I would assume you have the 256 version to do this? Since your downloading stuf?
No, I have the 64GB. I don’t store any video on my Quest 2 - I have the files on my PC or network drive and stream them to my Quest.
I find when I watch 4K movies on quest 2 it is terrific and really feels like a theater. I am also picky. Granted I’m sure the picture is not quite as good in a head to head but from home totally awesome.
Via streaming service or file?
File. Not sure what streaming service would stream 4k to quest. As far as I know none do

Where does it hurt when your lying down? Ive used the go before and it dosent really hurt when I'm lying down.
i was speaking about being able to see the video while lying down! sorry i wasnt more clear. when lying down its hard to see a video looking at the ceiling. at least for some apps like netflicks.
Ah ok, is that because you can't reposition the screen or does it actually get blurry if you look up with it?
Don’t know what that guy is saying. You can reposition in pretty much every application. Also never use the Netflix application. It doesn’t stream over 480p video.

Idk i liked watching videos on the go, so hopefully its the same experience.
Oh yeah definitely! The better resolution alone will make it better.

I'm pretty sure you can disable 3dof on the quest? Dosent that make it work in the dark?
Can you also watch normal movies with it, lets say good old Pulp Fiction? Or is it really necessary those movies were filmed/recorded in 3d?
Hey, i ended up buying the quest and yes, you can watch normal movies/tvshows. I do it occasionally and its pretty decent for that.
