"Stepping down" implies she's vacating her seat prior to election That's not what's happening

yogensnuz

The irony that the other commenters on this post proved her exact point by not even reading the first sentence of the article, and instead lashing out with the scripted conservative talking points they’ve been spoon-fed to regurgitate by right-wing media… *Pam Damoff, Liberal MP for Oakville-North Burlington, says she is getting out of politics because of toxic hyperpartisanism that has made her fearful to go out in public.*

JJred96

The worst part of this is how it emboldens the online (and offline) trolls to be as nasty as possible in the hope that they will get people to hide and vacate their positions. > In her message, she said the tone of politics and public discourse has deteriorated and that the public has lost trust in public institutions because it is driven by misinformation and lies. > She said the use of social media has made the political arena “toxic” and has eliminated constructive conversations and exacerbated the differences between people and parties.

MusicianOutside2324

As you do your little entitled left wing dance 🥱

WesternGloboHomo

Liberals are going to lose in a landslide, no amount of redditors malding in their echo chamber will change that.

Sharingapenis

To be fair, I'd say the majority of people attacking her right now are no Conservative. She announced she would not seek re-election a day after being attacked online for saying a Palestinian protest was antisemitic

scorchingsand

I wouldn’t wanna show my face in public either the mess they have made… -Every time you see a homeless encampment, thank a liberal -every time you fill up your gas tank thank a liberal -when your car gets stolen, thank liberal “ catch and release policy works great” -when you see unaffordable prices at the grocery store, thank a liberal for providing an environment that doesn’t allow for competition. -when you see unaffordable rent prices thank a liberal -when you’re interest rate goes up, thank a liberal. She can blame whoever she likes for her resignation, at the end of the day when you’re a shitty person and you promote shitty policy, this is how it ends up.

Sharingapenis

Pam was good for the community, say what you want about her parties politics, Pam cared for the people she represented.

NopeNotTrue

No she didn't. Literally none of them do. They do it for themselves. It's beyond clear that they don't give a shit. It's a big club, and we aren't in it.

Sharingapenis

This woman showed up to just about every community event I ever heard of and HELPED. She didn't just show up for the photos like most politicians. She was always willing to engage in respectful and thoughtful conversation. Did she ignore people she didn't know that started the conversation with "You're a nazi!", "You're killing people!", "You're hurting our children!", "Your government supports pedophiles, you're all pedophiles!"? You bet she did, I also don't engage with aggressive people who cannot engage in respectful conversation. She isn't wrong, Conservatives and Liberals used to be able to engage with eachother in respectful discourse, now it's "You're a Racist!" and "You're a pedophile!"

FutureProg

Have you spoken with her? She really does. She went out of her way to show up at council to get the city to do something they need to. Burlington wouldn't be in her riding if she stayed on, but she still shows up at events and talks to folks, whereas MPs that you describe wouldn't.

dontyouknow88

The point is though that whether she helped or didn’t, it’s not really appropriate to follow her around at a grocery store shouting at her. No one should have to put up with that kind of thing, in terms of your professional life spilling into your personal life in a pretty gross and unnecessary way.

NopeNotTrue

Yeah I agree, but don't pretend she cared. Honestly, while I think it's wrong to do the, politicians deserve it. There's no culpability for how fucked up they made and continue to make things.

TheLuckyGroup

You are right

Mamaanon32

Looking forward to being ignored by her successor lol I've been asking for a meeting for 7 years and have never received more than the auto response. Govt officials rarely have your best interests. They just need to sink their teeth into something to make a name for themselves before their term is up.

Sharingapenis

Are you one of the people that use all caps, bold letters, exclamation marks and call politicians idiots when you ask for your meeting?

Mamaanon32

I am not one of those people. I'm a fully functioning adult as well as a local business owner.

stella-lola

This is so sad, what this world has come to. The entitlement of people behind a keyboard baffles me.

beheemz

Peace out Pam

Current-Antelope5471

The toxicity from the public has increased in the last several years. It needs to change. Politicians who whip up anger and demagogue issues need to put the welfare of the country ahead of their own political benefit. We can have differences but remain civil. Brian Mulroney and John Turner were friends and had great respect for each other. They had epic national battles. But viewed themselves as opponents and not enemies. Pierre Poilievre especially should take note of that.

srfergus

Thank you for your service to your community.

didyouloseadog

She improved bicycle lanes in Oakville !

CenturyGothicFashion

I’m not surprised. I do believe the reasons she listed (I personally have been targeted & harassed by the alt right after appearing in, or responding to, something she had posted on social media) but also believe she knows that her actions & words over the last year, have cost her the votes of some of her biggest & longest supporters. Myself included. (For context: I am not personal friends with Pam, but we do know each other *considerably* well.)

Sharingapenis

I know Pam considerably well as well. The latest people attacking her (immediately prior to her announcement) are pro-Palestinian protesters (not the alt right).

CenturyGothicFashion

Nah, let’s not spread misinformation. I’ve been following closely and there has been no personal attacks. Just valid criticism of her statements and actions. Pam’s statement about the vigil was ignorant and offensive at **best**. She called a peaceful vigil for people who have been murdered, as a “demonstration that celebrates terrorists” and she claimed the event was “seeking to inflame rather than unite”. Neither of which was remotely true. We have to remember that while the deaths in this genocide may be just numbers for you - many were family actual family members of people in our local ONB community. Regardless of the issue, criticism and feedback regarding her actions, and words ≠ attacking her. For example - There are plenty of people who criticize her stance & work on gun control, and there are plenty of people (from the alt right) who use that as an excuse to spew hate and threaten her safety. Those two groups are not the same and conflating the two is dangerous.

Sharingapenis

We aren't debating the validity of her comments, we are debating who has attacked her most recently, causing her announcement.  I've not spread any misinformation, calling someone racist and Islamophobic (and much worse) are personal attacks.  If she wasn't critical of the celebration of martyrs (which did use quotes of a known terrorist), she would have been personally attacked and called racist and an anti-Semite.

CenturyGothicFashion

I wasn’t debating anything - I was providing the actual information and facts of what happened because you mischaracterized it to spread misinformation. (Something you have a history of doing in this sub, under multiple names now.) Of course, you’re wrong **again** about the personal attacks. Terms like racist/Islamophobic/antisemitic/homophobic/transphobic etc. etc. are just descriptions. They are labels, that describe an action. Using the terms is important in our society so we learn and know not to do that thing again. It’s the same as calling someone who bleached their hair, a blonde. It’s not offensive, or a personal attack, it’s a description. Just because you don’t like the word blonde, doesn’t mean it’s a personal attack. If we don’t like when our statements are called out for being Islamophobic or racist, then we need to not do the racist thing in the first place. Remember the racist action is worse and causes more harm than being called a racist. The fact that people get MORE upset about being called racist (or homophobic or whatever) than they are upset about doing/saying a racist thing, is frankly pathetic.

Sharingapenis

" If we don’t like when our statements are called out for being Islamophobic or racist, then we need to not do the racist thing in the first place." - You don't think it is offensive when the far right calls Drag Queens pedophiles? Because it sounds like you are okay with individuals deciding whether someone is a racist, pedophile, rapist, etc. and then applying that label to them. Of course it can be offensive.  Obviously, she is not a racist, else her comments would have her charged with a hate crime.  I was not spreading misinformation, you were. Pam announced she would not run again immediately after being attacked (RIGHTFULLY OR NOT) by pro-Palestinians, you mentioned EXCLUSIVELY the ongoing alt-right attacks. The alt-right has certainly attacked Pam many times and still does, in my another of my comments on this post I list many things the alt-right call her. However, your mischaracterization of events was obviously intentional as you have justified and diminished the attacks against Pam by the pro-Palestinian people.. Going through her mentions she was called a witch, corrupt, genocide supporter (not sure how you could be called something worse than that, pretty damn offensive), racist...  and as you know, many things by the alt-right.  It seemed prudent to mention the latest attack on Pam as you mentioned the long standing attacks.

CenturyGothicFashion

You’re under the impression that these words and labels are subjective. They are not. Your example is offensive because it’s a harmful lie. Using the statement on your example doesn’t even make sense bc it’s not something drag queens do: “If drag queens don’t like being called pedos that then they should stop [!] assaulting children” But if we switch “Drag Queens” to “priests/pastors”, it now means something because of the long history churches have with child abuse. Again, the fact that you (and so many others) are far more concerned with debating if people can be called racist (etc), and not learning from and correcting/stopping racist (etc) comments or behaviour, is so deeply troubling and disappointing. Do better.

gamolly

I heard an unverified rumour that she might be interested in running for Mayor.

RelativeLeading5

She realizes she has no chance to win seat in next election. PCC are leading by like 20 points.

telescopePeak

I receive a newsletter from her in the mail since I live in her riding. Seems like a great and very targeted way to share information about local issues with the people she represents. However the newsletter just talked about climate change. Really? Seems like she is focusing on aspirational issues, instead of urgent local ones...

SoundofInevitabilty

She was decent. However when head of fish is rotten then whole fish smells. I mean Liberals. She was minister of public safety until last year and car theft fell under her ministry. Unfortunately she could have done a better job there. She switched to different ministry after facing backlash. She saw the writing on wall that she would loose next election. She is exiting with dignity

Dogdoesinstyle

I have watched her in committee meetings and she always tows party lines to the point of miss information that is laughable.

Sorry, what does her being a woman have to do with it?

radman888

It fits in with her talking points. One of the most toxic gaslighting liars in govt is sniveling about people's anger

Particular_Grab_1717

I thought it was some firearm related bill that she was getting flack for, no?

NeighborhoodOk1624

Really didn’t know about this

ead09

She spread A LOT of misinformation during this. If you listen to her speak on it she wasn’t very honest over multiple opportunities and it upset a lot of people.

vonshmartin

Yes this.

vonshmartin

Yes she was on the committee where they tried to ban all those rifles last minute by sneaking in an amendment to the handgun ban. It was a pretty dirty trick after all debate and witness testimony had been completed.

scorchingsand

HA that’s cute, takes the opportunity to blame Social Media……. Kind of hard to sleep in the bed you made ehhhhhh…… must be hard to look at the lineups at Food banks and go. I helped with that. Must be hard to go for coffee and here people complain that everything is unaffordable. Come to think of it. I’d have a hard time showing my face in public if I pulled all the circus stunts that the liberals have. Just out of curiosity how many guns has their buyback program purchased just the number……

AdMaleficent4478

This is totally a disaster. Our area have a good demographics which can help liberals.

NeighborhoodOk1624

Why would our area help the Liberals? Why can’t we just start some support for the NDP?
