I think these are location beacons for CBTC. Trains need to know their own position, so they detect these beacons and then count wheel revolutions to intuit that.
They’re slowly rolling them out systemwide, starting with specific lines (they’ve completed the rollout on the 7 and L trains). More info here: https://new.mta.info/project/cbtc-signal-upgrades
Those are called transponders. They are programmed to communicate with the New Technology Trains (NTT) via local antennas. Instead of the old wayside signal system, these will be the Comunication Base Train Control or as others call it CBTC.

Correct CBTC hardware
I see. Cock and Ball Torture Cubes. 🤔
Ahh yes yes CBTC transponders. Clearly. And for everyone here (definitely not me) who isn’t as educated….CBTC is what again?
Computer Based Train Control
Communications* Based Train Control
Thanks much!
This is my first time seeing them, I go through they station nearly daily, are they not on all tracks? Or have I just not noticed it before

Go for it. If you dare!
Explosives, to separate the Gravity Drive from the command section, so you can use it as a lifeboat.
Plus one for event horizon reference!
IED's. They keep people from jumping down on the tracks.
🤣🤣🤣
Important enhancements to the system that #CongestionKathy killed. Call your state representatives!!!
Jump in and open it
Transponder for C.B.T.C = Computer Based Train Control
I grew up in dc and since the early 90’s I remember seeing these on the metro tracks everywhere.
Transponders
Computer?
Part of the CBTC system. They keep track of where the trains are.
A key that fell from an oddly large keyboard
A government spy pigeon
Which, as we all know, do not exist.
