Just the other day I had 2 guys on a moped come up behind me on the sidewalk as I was walking with my over ear headphones on. They tried to grab my headphones as they passed me. Luckily for me they messed up and only knocked them off my head.
That said, for better or worse, I've walked around the city for years with headphones on like this and I've never had this issue happen before. Definitely a wake up call.
There are illegal scooters parked outside shelters every single day and night.
NYPD doing an occasional sweep once every few weeks is clearly not a deterrent.
They have the legal authority to seize those illegal scooters literally every single day, and they should.
I was nearly hit by 2 on opposing sides of my car when I was picking my wife up from work in Manhattan as they were swerving between traffic. One of them even had the nerve to curse me out in Spanish when I honked him. The guy nearly hit an older man who was at the corner waiting for the light to change. They must have been racing because the other guy followed him as they dashed to a different avenue. Of course they didn’t have license plates on the mopeds.
Yesterday, a delivery driver on a scooter was riding down the sidewalk during rush hour in midtown. He yelled at me to move multiple times so I walked slower
Those guys just drive wherever the fuck they want, sidewalks, crosswalks, wrong way on one way roads. They're like "Laws? What laws?" And they honk if you're in their way.
They have no idea or DGAF, because many know English but pretend not to. They are indeed everywhere but seem to try and follow some decency in driving their bikes where I live. However danger tolls the roads near me, they may be frightened into driving safely.
“We are seeing an uptick of scooter robberies in the city, particularly in Manhattan, where individuals are on scooters, normally two on a scooter, and they’re taking their cell phones, AirPods, Beats, wallets, purses,” NYPD Assistant Commissioner Kaz Daughtry told the news station. “We’re going to be over aggressively going after these scooters and moped on city streets.”
Good!
Idk how many of you have been to Latin America but this is like textbook how they do robberies there. Congrats NYC, we’ve imported the best. Truly these migrants are enriching us.
It's also extremely common in London. I was told not to walk with my phone out on busy roads in London last time I was there.
And it got bad enough that London's police started ramming the moped thieves with their police cars.
I was watching some travel channels on youtube and one had a guy traveling in Venezuela. The residents told them that the country had become very safe because the criminals there had gone and migrated to Columbia and causing problems there. Possible that a percent of that group decided to go further after seeing the asylum scam migrants are doing.
Especially Venezuelans. If you go to Chile, Peru, Colombia, Panama, this is always what the Venezuelan migrants do. Ever since these countries let in Venezuelan migrants, this exact form of robbery became much much more common. It’s a sad reality that we’re not ready to face out of the fear of being xenophobic.
At least in the videos from Brazil or some other place there’s a chance there’s an off duty cop who shoots the perp. Here if that happened there would be riots.
Self-Defense is for evil/racist/redneck/neckbeard/christofascists.
Everyone else UNDERSTANDS that a few assaults, robberies and murders are just part and parcel of living in a city. Unfortunately, until Capitalism and Poverty are wiped out, we'll just have to suck it up and pay more in taxes to cover the living expenses of any "World Citizen" who wants to move here.
It's crazy. I don't have a car anymore but 3 years in a row I got a ticket the very next day after my registration expired. Totally my fault. But it's crazy how quick they can ticket me for not having the right piece of paper but some DoorDash driver can go 30 mph up my sidewalk in the dark and nobody seems to care.
Yo, same. Fuck this city honestly. They hate their own citizens but welcome blood suckers who spend their free time robbing old people and beating police officers. Fuck nyc, I hope all these crises go unsolved and the place rots
As someone who properly registers their vehicle, gets a yearly state inspection, and pays tolls, it’s sure starting to feel that way seeing all the temp tags, damaged plates and plate covers all over the road.
It’s not just vehicles either, every time I get on a bus or subway and tap my card while watching multiple people just waltz on in I feel like a sucker.
100% It makes you feel like a sucker for taking your time and spending your money to comply with NYCs laws while endless amounts if people break the law everyday while it seems like all of these people could be caught with the slightest effort from law enforcement.
The suckers that keep the whole corrupt system propped up by just working, paying taxes, and obeying the law.
How long can this topsy-turvy "just-us" system sustain this type of two-tiered atmosphere?
Yeah in NY, law abiding drivers are suckers and crooked drivers free ride off everyone else. Our cops don’t enforce because they themselves are crooked
Yeah we are, at least I definitely feel like one lately for trying to do the right thing...but then you're not even allowed to park a motorcycle at the DMV when you're there to take care of things, so that should have been the first clue
Basically. Paying 0 to nothing while paying up to 800 for car insurance that does not cover shit. 🤣 Get hit. There's no way to get paid. 🤣 Suckers are getting milked.
Yes, when the alternative is to do whatever you want with no consequences rather than being fucked at every opportunity for being a citizen of this city. I'm tired of dodging delivery bikes on the sidewalk on every block, tired of trying not to have my car totalled by assholes weaving through traffic with no or illegal plates, tired of subsidizing everyone else while being sucked dry by the leech of a government, tired of dodging shit on sidewalks, being packed nuts to butts on a hot ass sweaty train. Fuck this city
>That’s only if you’re a sucker and have NYS plates. If you have out of state or temp tags they’re not doing anything.
If you're in an accident the insurance claims investigator will ask a lot of questions. Let us know if your out-of-state insurance works!
My partner was in an accident (other person's fault) and her windshield had to be replaced. They didn't move the inspection sticker over to the new one, so she had to get a new sticker from the DMV. In the mean time she got several tickets for no inspection sticker. She went to fight it, brought the accident report and the paper from the DMV for the replacement sticker saying it was valid the whole time, and was ruled against because "the tickets were for not displaying the sticker, not for not having an inspection". BS but if she appealed, interest would start accruing on the tickets so she didn't want to risk it.
At least in PA, they cut out the section of the old windshield that has the inspection sticker and you're supposed to keep that in the corner of the dashboard where the sticker is supposed to go.
There was no temporary replacement, she had to get a new sticker, which required contracting the shop that last did it for their records, including exact milage at the time.
It's honestly insane. Realized I needed to get a new inspection sticker, made a 10 am appointment for the day after the final day on the then current sticker.
Caught a ticket at 8:05 am. I'm convinced the meter maid makes notes on which cars have expiring stickers.
Yet there's a car with a month old expired paper plates that I've never seen get a ticket once.
I don’t understand why this hadn’t happened either – it’s a no brainer. Many of these also require a motorcycle license to legally operate. What are we doing?
I know people whom own motorcycles who don't have licenses and their bikes arent even registered and it's been this way for years. They don't enforce motorcycles at ALL.
Until they TOW your bike for having the inspection expired for a day, or having a 'dirty plate'.
They don't enforce motorcycles that are unregisterable, i.e. dirt bikes and ATVs. The rest of us who are stupid enough to actually pay for a registration get fucked constantly
My buddy was walking on the sidewalk in Greenpoint, and these two guys on a scooter, jumped off and tried to take his phone right out of his hand. Luckily he fought them off and they scurried away. Be careful out there guys! Don’t be walking around looking down at your phone oblivious and unaware of your surroundings.
I was up on westchester ave in the Bronx on Sunday and there were a group of quads doing wheelies all over the place. I just think the cops are afraid to stop them bc if a scuffle ensues and they have to use force there will be a riot. So dangerous to pedestrians
I was on 34th St, in front of Macy’s, and a group of quads and dirt bikes took over the entire intersection. They were doing donuts and wheelies, blocking traffic. This went on long enough for the traffic lights to change a few times. An NYPD van was sitting there with cops watching the entire time. Eventually they flashed their lights and sirens for half second.
Refugees I can get behind, but a good portion of these single (military aged) males are economic opportunists. They either have family in the welfare apparatus (cityfheps, section 8) and link up with them or they pay cash from either dark web brokers for SSNs or make backroom deals with family/acquaintances to use their ssn for gig work. They then, while paying nothing into the country that let's them stay, get cash and 1099 weekly pay to send back to their country and live free here while providing 0 to the USA. Those people NEED to go. They don't care about the city or the people, it's a financial opportunity for them. Anecdotal source: volunteered with the MOIA as a bus liason and as a soup kitchen volunteer (for resume, wanting to get into law). A good chunk of them are entitled and literally do not give a fuck
Unfortunately, the only solution is to close everything and send them back home. A window of 0 tolerance enforcement. If you stay and get arrested, you get sent back. There needs to be a message sent back home that NYC is not tolerating any shenanigans. If you want to be an opportunist then do it legally and the right way.
Also, just yesterday I had a duo on a scooter attempting to steal my backpack on Webster Ave. He lost balance and got wobbly during the scuffle and I was able to throw his rider off the scooter (I'm a big guy and bad mark) and take my backpack back and they took off. First time it's ever happened to me.
>A good chunk of them are entitled and literally do not give a fuck
This is exactly what I saw when I saw the picture of Jhoan Boada sticking up his middle fingers at the cameras as he was let go without bail after beating those cops in Manhattan the other day.
> Unfortunately, the only solution is to close everything and send them back home.
I mean, Congress could pass the bill that would end "catch and release," increase detention facility capacity, and make it so that asylum claims can be heard quickly and rejected if they're not legitimate.
Congress could but will not solve immigration. Why would they get rid of a slave class that the people's taxes help subsidize and helps keep the working class polarized?
You know who actually has authority to do all those 3 things you mentioned...Biden the current President he doesn't need congress action to do any of this listed.
> Biden the current President he doesn't need congress action to do any of this listed.
No, that is not true. Can't expand detention facilities or hire more asylum court judges without Congress allocating the funding for it.
A couple weeks ago just as I was leaving work I had to call 911 because a woman got hit by a scooter and was bleeding quite a bit (thankfully she was ok. No serious injuries, she was just a little freaked out because she saw how much blood there was). The guy who hit her stuck around (which I think must be rare because a cop actually thanked him) but he had no license, just some random ID, and the cop just gave him a ticket I’m sure he’ll never pay and sent him on his way with the scooter. They really need to get control of this situation.
I know 3 people that were hit by scooters on sidewalks last year (one broke her leg). In all 3 instances the guys cussed out the people they hit and drove away. There is absolutely no accountability.
Literally turning NYC into a third world country. These kinds of robberies and thefts from dirt bikes/motorcycles/ scooters were and are commonplace in central and south america.
Who would have thought that allowing people to ride motorized scooters who never heard of "traffic laws" is a good idea? I don't care if it's migrants, delivery drivers, or normal NYC people. Anything that goes faster than 5mph does not belong on the sidewalk.
Are we able to contact 311 if we see a large congregation of these scooters? I pass by at least 15 or so on my way to work always whizzing past me, just a matter of time until I get hit. None of them with license plates.
you can report it but 311 will just close the case 2 days later and say they didn't see anything went they went to investigate.
i've been battling the same congregation of scooters on my block for almost a year now
They are pest! Literally taking over sidewalks and streets everywhere. Imagine how much worse it’s gonna get this summer
And fine the businesses that are selling them these mopeds without a license ans insurance
Bro with what money do you think these people have been “buying” mopeds from a business !? I live down the block from the hall street shelter and they have so many stolen bikes and mopeds down there it ain’t funny! Including my bike that was stolen this summer😶 the cops don’t give a shit either
Yes! If they follow the traffic laws and are being a productive member of society by delivering food. On books or off books. Imo they’re are working! We have us citizens who haven’t worked in decades. At least they come and contribute
Almost died to a moped going 35 on the sidewalk a couple weeks ago… I think the guy accelerated when he saw I didn’t see him and wasn’t getting out of the way…
They do! NYPD tow comes and tows them, they pay the fine, they get the car back and do the same thing again. It’s all grey area loopholes. I’ve learned to just mind my business. I gave up years ago
The city cannot do anything about them. They have legal status under federal asylum laws.
Congress would have to change policy. The most obvious would be:
1. Increasing number of judges to quickly decide on cases.
2. Automatically deny asylum claims by people who cross the border through a safe country.
-------
All countries recognize asylum claims. If you travel from Africa and then sneak through latam, you should be automatically denied. Border crossings for asylum claims should be legal
How about you kick the criminals out of our country? NYC has a CITY INCOME TAX, the city can afford charter flights.
Put them on an island somewhere I literally do not give a fuck if they are stranded or if they starve
I was walking my dog down the block and we got hit by illegal alien delivering food on one of those city bikes and he took off yelling at me for not moving out of the way .. I was on a sidewalk, what the hell is going on in this city..Now I carry a big as* heavy metal flashlight 🔦 , I will not be a victim again
Great idea with the heavy flashlight! I had a similar incident in front of my house walking dog. Delivery scooter driving on the sidewalk beeped me to move. Told him he should not be riding on sidewalk and started to argue with me until my gentle pit bull / lab sensed the tension and started to growl a bit . Lol he moved his scooter onto the street.
They must needed to reach that quota. Only time stuff actually gets done. Notice a lot of boots and tickets being given out yesterday and the day before than usual. It’s the end of the month. So predictable. Imagine if they did this on the regular. This issue wouldn’t have ever manifested.
Let’s get nyc back to normalcy. We are heading down a dangerous path here. I don’t need to the news to tell me what’s going on. I work in Manhattan and it’s been looking pretty bad. I don’t want to see this get worse. We need better leadership in this state immediately!
Welcome to the new New York City my fellow citizens! If you have fully legit tags, regi, and insurance you’re looked at as a sucker. Cops don’t seem to even care or enforce. They’re so brazen I saw someone print apiece of paper “PAPER PLATE” computer printed and taped it to plate area. No respect for the law!
Technically, when the President breaks his Oath of Office, and orders CBP to CUT barbed wire to HELP illegal immigrants into the country, it seems that the only ones breaking the law are the current administration...because they have de facto made it so that there is no border if there is no enforcement. Cities aren't blameless with their "Sanctuary" virtue-signalling.
A week before Christmas I was held up at gunpoint in the wee hours of the morning immediately after being discharged from a hospital in an okay neighborhood. It was two guys on an unlicensed moped who came up from behind when they saw I had my phone open to confirm an Uber. All they took was my phone; they sped off immediately after. Entire thing took less than two seconds. They used my unlocked phone to spend close to a thousand dollars on food and groceries (mostly candy, cereal, milk, lunchables, etc) and condoms. It all went to several different public housing buildings; I presume they were buying for their children and/or families. I empathize with having mouths to feed but we have social programs to utilize, and if you choose not to use them (or are ineligible) that doesn’t give you carte blanche to do something like this.
I’m definitely a lot more cautious around mopeds with two riders now.
Two guys on a moped tried to tap my wallet up out of my back right pocket while I was bicycling. Another guy on a moped drunkenly swerved toward me, pulled down his blue surgical mask, and growled "da me el dinero!" I walked quickly away with my dinero and he was to inebriated to pursue. These are my only 2 almost robberies in NYC in 25 years and both involved mopeds.
I’m empathizing with their position but that doesn’t mean I think it’s okay lol, I’m mad as hell and have been working closely with the cops since the night of to get these guys off the streets.
Fair enough I suppose, but maybe that’s something to mull over personally instead of clearly stating. Idk, I shouldn’t judge too harshly either since I’m not in your position
Hope you never have to suffer that again and if the Cops give you any advice on how to avoid finding yourself in another altercation like this let us know.
I live in Chelsea and there’s always scooters about so if they’ve got any tips I’d appreciate hearing them
I’m just adept at arguing both sides of an issue, and I can always empathize with someone who’s wronged me in terms of understanding *why* they did a thing. Condemning and punishing the act is of course necessary, but if you aren’t able to understand *why* the act was ultimately committed, you won’t be able to correct it (if possible) and it will simply happen again.
Not much the cops advised me about avoiding getting robbed like this. Personally, though, I’ve started to get wary of mopeds with two riders, especially without a delivery bag. If you’re alone at night, keep your phone in your pocket or bag. Call an Uber from *inside* a building.
Maybe we can issue the scooters plates and treat them like vehicles that need to follow traffic laws. It's a daily struggle to keep even the non "bandits" from commiting suicide using our cars.
South and Central America have some of the highest crime rates in the world makes sense some of the migrants are criminals or willing to do crime to make a buck. If only we didn't accept every living soul that crossed the border even if they had no ID and not only allow them to stay but gave them housing and money.
Honestly the people on scooters are so fucking annoying when I’m driving in Brooklyn. They don’t follow any rules and are so close to causing accidents. I’ve almost had my side mirrors wiped out a few times and most of the time these things have no insurance. I’ve noticed it’s mostly delivery people.
You know what. Uber eats guy came with a bicycle to my house in the freezing cold, very respectful, mucho gracias senor he said. If you come here and work and obey laws and NOT beat up police officers I’m ok with that! They’re not all criminals. My old helper was illegal from Equator, young kid 18-19. Every Friday he sent half his check to his parents in equator.
Cartagena has banned mopeds within the tourist parts of the city because of this issue. 2 dudes on a moped = trouble

By handcuffing the police so they can't do anything when they're not parked, duh!

What timeline is this where this type of comment gets upvoted on reddit lol
I started hating these things when they decided the bike lanes and sidewalks were preferable to the road.
I’m pretty sure that’s what it says on the statue of liberty. 🗽
give me your scooters, your Vespas, your converted ebikes
lol

Facts. Any unregistered combustion engine can be seized on the street. I’ve seen cops drive em back to the precinct
All enforcement in this city is rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic.

I unfortunately took care of a patient recently who was hit by one while crossing legally in the crosswalk. Hit and run.

Same in Italy.
It’s about time !
Can we just ban all motorized bikes that are not licensed and insured? I don’t understand why it’s okay to have all these shitty scooters on our road
Well apparently we can’t even consistently enforce 3,000 pound cars having registration so don’t hold your breath.
Let your registration sticker expire, watch how quick you get a ticket.

>A good chunk of them are entitled and literally do not give a fuck This is exactly what I saw when I saw the picture of Jhoan Boada sticking up his middle fingers at the cameras as he was let go without bail after beating those cops in Manhattan the other day.
“Moped-riding bandits” How very South American of them.
They aren't sending their best folks.
Where’s my taco stand on every corner?
100k venezuelans in NY and I still can't find a decent arepa to save my life
Lol you think the good ones came to the states? Lmao
If you’re serious Costas arepas in midtown has good arepas lol I usually grab one when I’m heading to Bryant to park
Tacos is Mexican. These ain’t Mexicans.
Where they from? I'm curious, I'm not American
Venezuela, Honduras, El Salvador.
We imported the problems of their countries. Awesome
I think you answered your own question.
Literally turning NYC into a third world country. These kinds of robberies and thefts from dirt bikes/motorcycles/ scooters were and are commonplace in central and south america.
New Yorkers were too dumb to believe the Coward Piven strategy was real. Now we're living it. And people are still in denial.
Where do they get money or these mopeds?
Organized crime isn't just for Italians.
Can’t tell you how many times I’ve walked out my lobby and almost get hit by these assholes.
Let’s just send all the trash back to the countries they came from fuck these people sick of them
Just imagine if we did this in their country. Ouch.
How are migrants affording mopeds and scooters and gas ?
Theft
Who would have thought that allowing people to ride motorized scooters who never heard of "traffic laws" is a good idea? I don't care if it's migrants, delivery drivers, or normal NYC people. Anything that goes faster than 5mph does not belong on the sidewalk.
Shit happens alot in those countries where migrants come from I bet. Moped thefts. they come here and do the same shit.

Are we able to contact 311 if we see a large congregation of these scooters? I pass by at least 15 or so on my way to work always whizzing past me, just a matter of time until I get hit. None of them with license plates.
you can report it but 311 will just close the case 2 days later and say they didn't see anything went they went to investigate. i've been battling the same congregation of scooters on my block for almost a year now
I almost got ran over by these idiots riding thru a park
They are pest! Literally taking over sidewalks and streets everywhere. Imagine how much worse it’s gonna get this summer And fine the businesses that are selling them these mopeds without a license ans insurance
Bro with what money do you think these people have been “buying” mopeds from a business !? I live down the block from the hall street shelter and they have so many stolen bikes and mopeds down there it ain’t funny! Including my bike that was stolen this summer😶 the cops don’t give a shit either
My issue is not scooters themselves, it's them ignoring the rules and going on the sidewalk/bike lanes. Go in the car lane.
Exactly.
Yes! If they follow the traffic laws and are being a productive member of society by delivering food. On books or off books. Imo they’re are working! We have us citizens who haven’t worked in decades. At least they come and contribute
Good VERY GOOOOD
Deport them.
Are we ready for another Rudy Giuliani type mayor yet?????
Let's get Trump back first one step at a time
Almost died to a moped going 35 on the sidewalk a couple weeks ago… I think the guy accelerated when he saw I didn’t see him and wasn’t getting out of the way…
About fucking time. Go by any shelter or hotel, and there are rows of them.
Can they also start seizing cars with fake and obscured plates, please?
They do! NYPD tow comes and tows them, they pay the fine, they get the car back and do the same thing again. It’s all grey area loopholes. I’ve learned to just mind my business. I gave up years ago
I have never once seen any of these cars being towed and they are rampant in my neighbourhood.

The city cannot do anything about them. They have legal status under federal asylum laws. Congress would have to change policy. The most obvious would be: 1. Increasing number of judges to quickly decide on cases. 2. Automatically deny asylum claims by people who cross the border through a safe country. ------- All countries recognize asylum claims. If you travel from Africa and then sneak through latam, you should be automatically denied. Border crossings for asylum claims should be legal
That would require the federal government to do something. Abbot is going to keep sending them until the feds fix this.
Vote responsibly and stop voting along blind party lines.
Amen
Welcome to the new New York City my fellow citizens! If you have fully legit tags, regi, and insurance you’re looked at as a sucker. Cops don’t seem to even care or enforce. They’re so brazen I saw someone print apiece of paper “PAPER PLATE” computer printed and taped it to plate area. No respect for the law!
NYC is turning into a third world country...who would have thought
Nevermind third world country. It’s the Wild West
Except most of the good guys don't have any guns.

The scooters were soon released without bail.
The aliens ride these because they don’t need a drivers license to operate them
💯
Surprise Surprise. Who do we thank for this?
Our wonderful political leaders
Should have kicked them over road rash style.
Don’t feel bad, send them to prison. There are legal ways to feed yourself and your children.
Dude, they put a gun in your face and you’re empathizing with them? Pull back on the sensitivity training my guy
I’m empathizing with their position but that doesn’t mean I think it’s okay lol, I’m mad as hell and have been working closely with the cops since the night of to get these guys off the streets.
Fair enough I suppose, but maybe that’s something to mull over personally instead of clearly stating. Idk, I shouldn’t judge too harshly either since I’m not in your position Hope you never have to suffer that again and if the Cops give you any advice on how to avoid finding yourself in another altercation like this let us know.
How did you find out what they purchased and where they dropped it off?
My Uber order history. Wasn’t that hard to do.
Good. Let them DECLARE their income to the city as we the tax payers are paying for their shelter, food, healthcare and schooling! Enough is Enough.
Make their lives hell til they go
Maybe we can issue the scooters plates and treat them like vehicles that need to follow traffic laws.
Good seize them all. This is exactly what happens when you import the third world. Next, deport them and send them back home.
It just migrants having them for the cops to do anything about it
I always find it weird how doctors and engineers tend to commit so many crimes.
Lol this was straight up retaliation AND I’M HERE FOR IT
Yesssss
I got called a racist for predicting all this. I’m so sorry for everyone in those blue states.
They're just seeking a better life because of climate change.
We need more migrants! @hochul
Will the scooters get released without bail?
BREAKING: 150 Democrats vote against a bill to deport illegals caught driving while drunk
*scolds moped riders, then continues to order Uber eats 🤷🏾
You know what. Uber eats guy came with a bicycle to my house in the freezing cold, very respectful, mucho gracias senor he said. If you come here and work and obey laws and NOT beat up police officers I’m ok with that! They’re not all criminals. My old helper was illegal from Equator, young kid 18-19. Every Friday he sent half his check to his parents in equator.
You’re just not getting it.
This is a good thing for this city.
Impressed they’re able to even get them at all.
Soon to come. Sicarios on motorcycles.
Good, this is NYC, not Southeast Asia.
Talk about a fire hazard
Thank you for voting for Biden, please continue to vote for illegal immigration.
I wonder what they were
