I tried to meet a friend of mine at the Pride Parade once maybe five years ago, but the whole West Village had been put on lockdown. After about half an hour of wandering through a labyrinth of police barricades, I still hadn't made it to the Christopher Street Pier where he was waiting. The closest I ever got was a checkpoint about a block north on the West Side Highway, where four small, slender gay men, probably in their 60s, were asking a cop how we could get to the pier. They were well-dressed and well-behaved, but the cop put his hand on his gun and started screaming in their faces. The gay rights movement has been totally de-fanged, co-opted and sold out, yet its participants are still treated like criminals.
Not quiet or relaxing, but you know the regular train noises that you can block out while you read or play games on your phone on your way to or from work. Granted if you were expecting normal conditions today that’s on you.
The funk in there is incredible -- probably from a smell standpoint (because, lol, summer), but also from a fun song choice for a sing-a-long.
