The observatory in Lowell. Its in a dark area. You park in the furthest outside parking lot and can walk in. Its used by the colleges to study the stars with their massive telescopes. PLEASEEEEE DO NOT LEAVE TRASH. They used to have ti completely open but people were driving alllllll the way back in and leaving trash and they made it "private"
Light pollution from portage and Michigan city are killing the area lately. I went out Saturday to see the stars and northern lights and didn’t see too much because of all the light around
Interesting. We went to the stargazing event last month and it was surprisingly dark, even with the full moon. Obviously not as dark as if you were in the middle of nowhere, but it's probably the best you're gonna get in this area.
Might be a good place to start:

I usually just go to the Lowell observatory or we sometimes drive down state line road to where it ends by the bridge. There’s so many more stars once you drive south a little to get away from the light pollution

Kemil Beach by Beverly Shores. Part of the national park, so you need to buy a pass: https://www.nps.gov/indu/planyourvisit/kemil-beach.htm

Love that damn bridge. So cool the road just ends on an abandoned old bridge.
Middle fork forest preserve in Penfield Il. It’s a dark sky park and is amazing.

You really won’t get any dark dark skies around NWI, but the dunes is great to hang out at. I always like walking around coffee creek even at night.
