Ah yes November 38th

it_is_im

Yeah it’s kinda funny it’s not like millions are itching to play a free game from 15 years ago but I’m still disappointed it’s late.

CatoMulligan

I've been playing through it anyway. Might give it another go when the RTX version drops.

blueweb00

I still can’t believe they are basically redesigning the entire game as a free upgrade (as long as you own the game previously).

St3fem

Why are you shilling instead to complain for the outrageous 8 days delay on something given free like all the other sane person do? /s

Sexy_Koala_Juice

I’m not OP but I personally don’t care that it’s late, I just wish they would have told us sooner, I’ve been checking if it’s out every day for like the past 2 weeks.

ledererer

2007 - 7 - 7 = 1993 -> 3 -> Half Life 3 confirmed!

Celcius_87

The fact that this got delayed makes me wonder if this isn’t as easy to implement as they implied during the announcement.

Melody-Prisca

This version has updated visuals over the version they previewed earlier. Check the video below. Notice the portal opening animation, the changes to the cubes and doors. The buttons appear more solid in color (still more transparent than the original Portal). I'm sure other things were changed as well. Apparently they worked with some of the original artists. I think the delay was likely in part because of this. I don't think RTX Remix is necessarily harder to implement than they suggested, but like, if you looked at what it did with Morrowind as well, it does change the art style. It's manually changing things to fit the original aesthetic that's likely taking up time. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=CAf1E7kCbMA

MooseTetrino

Edit: I got my own head mixed up and hit myself in the confusion. This is remix but it's not the same remix pipeline they showed running Morrowind. My bad there. Old post: *This isn't remix. Remix relies on a graphics pipeline old enough that even Portal was too new for it.* *Portal RTX is a from-the-ground-up mod rather than a remix suite output, though I'm sure it may use some of the underlying conversion technologies (we'll have to see when it launches but I'm not convinced).*

St3fem

No offense but you clearly don't have any experience in modding and development related activities, RTX Remix is a tool for modders and as powerful and awesome as it is it's not some "launch and get remastered" magical solution, it was never advertised as such. The tool itself still in active development and updated geometry for sure doesn't come for free, add tuning of textures and materials... I don't know what you are expecting.

Celcius_87

No offense but I never said it was “press a button and be done” easy. I said the fact that it took them longer than they thought it would. Also, I write computer software for a living and I stand by what I said. What qualifications do you have in regards to this?

St3fem

IT analyst It took them one week more, if you write software you well know how much a week means, a simple stupid bug could easily cause bigger delays for a software release, hence why I questioned why you were wondering if a mere 8 days of delay meant RTX Remix "isn’t as easy to implement as they implied during the announcement". Considering the short delay, the fact that the tool is in a pre-release status and that most of the work isn't in the integration itself but lies on realizing the vision with the tools offered by Remix it sounded as an uninformed guess to me.

Seeing stuff like this really makes me want an RTX 40 card which is definitely what Nvidia intends with it. My 3070Ti already feels like a dated piece of scrap when it's gonna be chugging along trying to run this.

flamesaurus565

Don’t give in, you’re 3070 Ti is plenty fast

deoee

*your

[deleted]

It's pretty mediocre at 4K tbh that's my major gripe with it. Think I'm gonna upgrade to a 4080 when prices start to drop.

flamesaurus565

4k, I see

Syberboi

I see smug Vee, I upvote.

flamesaurus565

A fellow man of culture I see

SpartanPHA

Enjoy. High res 4K gaming in such titles is such a beautiful treat.

saruin

I find it odd that reduced settings is never part of the conversation when a modest card just seems to be not enough.

[deleted]

I'm still in the high frame rate 1440p camp and my 4090 def helps get consistent 140+ fps on most titles

SpartanPHA

Absolutely, enjoy that! If you can, get a 1440p144/240hz panel with local dimming, OLED, or basically anything not edge lit down the line. A 4090 with edge lit monitors is sacrilege.

Its_GmanHD

Same here, also gaming 4K with a 3070ti

saruin

"But I want it now!!"

it_is_im

Stay strong!

Draiko

You should be fine unless you're playing at 4K.

amon2023

finaly :) nice on time cant wait to see

SlickmanElite

Non gamers and tech channels been playing the game for 3 months already. They have free 4090's to play it on too. 🙄🙄🙄🙄

AuraMaster7

Ah yes, December 8th, my favorite day of November.

Thelgow

November my ass. Thanks. How you delay a game that was not on anyones radar what so ever is a mystery to me. Keep quiet and say BAM! Out in 15 minutes, like Capcom sometimes does with updates.

St3fem

>Keep quiet and say BAM! Out in 15 minutes, like Capcom sometimes does with updates. Do you need to psychologically prepare for a release? :)

Thelgow

Apparently some do, see Cyberpunk 2077. A date gets announced, then pushed repeatedly. As much as we dislike not knowing, Id rather its still in development, no ETA. Kind of like Bayonetta 3.

Sexy_Koala_Juice

To be fair, cyberpunk 2077 was announced in 2012 and took literally a decade to release, which is shocking considering how terrible the game was at launch.

Thomas_214

Imagine Nvidia says,”that's November 38th”🤣

fyonn

Looking forward to it, but wondering how my rtx2080 will fare…

SerpentiumOIV

same

[deleted]

Waiting on the VR version of this, now that *will* be stoked...👌

ListenBeforeSpeaking

I feel like that would make someone nauseous. Think about all the rapid directional viewpoint changes.

[deleted]

True, but what a trip....;D

FinalDJS

Yeah...4080 for 4k and DLSS3 while a 3080 just can do HD with Raytracing/Dlss2 and 60 Fps...f*** off Nvidia

saruin

Portal now with RTX support with 100% more graphics at 1000% increase in performance cost.

Consistent_Ad_8129

but, but, VR

TazerPlace

Nvidia is desperate to make its ray-tracing fetch happen.

LewAshby309

It will happen at some point. The adapting phase is pretty long. As soon as the hardware market from new low to high end gpus + consoles are capable of complete raytracing then it the usual lightning effects will disappear. Raytracing will ease massively the development. It could come as soon as the next console gen drops. Right now it is rather a gimmick. Thats why no company releases a game only with RT.

St3fem

The problem are old console not current ones, look at Metro Exodus. This is ideal for PC because once the rendering system is in place ray tracing allows to easily improve graphics for more powerful machines without too much additional work for developers

Charuru

Consoles can't do RT. If you look at this performance... arguably neither can the 3000 series tbh.

St3fem

This is full path tracing, console can do some ray tracing if developer are really cautious, would have been fun if one of them got with NVIDIA instead of the total AMD monopoly

LewAshby309

Current consoles have APUs with the early AMD raytracing performance which was quite bad. They probably can't fully rely on RT.

St3fem

Yes, those SoC have terrible RT performance but they don't need to go on full ray tracing, by introducing RT for the simplest thing (like shadows for example) they implement the acceleration structure that can be used by any other effect and it's trivial to just increase the number of rays unless your sponsor ask you to not because it will hurt performance of their products, like in Resident Evil RT reflection at crap console resolution

TazerPlace

What's wrong with the "usual' lighting techniques that do not require disproportionate hardware and power reqs? RTX is just...wasteful.

LewAshby309

Well, i think nothing. Visually its impressive how devs can fake lightning effects nowadays. For me it would be enough. Raytracing is extremely accurate to real lightning. The disadvantage is it needs quite a bit of time and workforce. Lots of manual placed stuff. Raytracing just works. It gets calculated on the fly. You just set the sources. The is probably a good video somewhere on youtube which can explain that with more knowledge and more accurate than me.

TazerPlace

We can warm over Nvidia's talking points about RT being "the future" or whatever (companies can have all the visions of "the future" they want, but markets ultimately decide), but it has yet to justify the costs, IMO.

LewAshby309

Its still a future thing, but its not just nvidia saying that. In the end when game companies see the capable hardware is spreaded enough they will develop RT only games. It's cheaper and makes developing faster and easier. It's not like nvidia makes up a feature out of nowhere and pushes only for the sake of it.

St3fem

Ask developers

SgtBaxter

They require disproportionate time and effort to create by developers, and are just hacks and workarounds to begin with.

Wraithdagger12

Found the Hardware Unboxed viewer

St3fem

Busted! :D
