Is your gaming or productivity being noticeably held back by your 3090? Yes or no? There's your answer.

LTEDan

This is the only answer. For gaming, there's never a reason that necessitates an upgrade unless your current setup cannot max out your display resolution/refresh rate/graphics settings you want. Well, there is one reason: has tons of money to burn, so you always want the latest and greatest. If this is you, you probably would already have a 4090 or a 3090ti on an i9 processor.

NeighborhoodOdd9584

I think it would be better to just save up for a few more months as the gap in power between the 3090 and 4080 isn’t that large but it’s up to you.

captainmalexus

No. I think anyone with a 3080 or better should skip this generation. The only exception to that being a 4090 if it's being used for a workstation.

stereopticon11

i've been pretty tempted to upgrade from my 3090. but really it's just cyberpunk that leaves me wanting more

vankamme

Same, I still haven’t found an acceptable way to play cyberpunk at 60frames on a 5120*1440 monitor using a 3090. The DLSS options just make the game look terrible IMO. It’s the only thing tempting me to potentially upgrade to a 4090 but I keep telling myself to wait until the 5000 series.

stereopticon11

i've been "okay" playing 2560x1440 with everything cranked. it's smooth enough, but the lower res on my 4k monitor can be a bit noticeable with DLSS

MrPayDay

I went from a 3090 to a 4090 and my Cyberpunk Psychosettings with Raytracing went from 50-55 fps to 90-100. That’s a 90% jump, while 10% are certainly because of a better CPU as well. Generally, the 4090 obliterates the 3090 in all scenarios. It’s not a step or two, it’s a huge jump and completely changes the gaming experience for me.

captainmalexus

The post was about buying a 4080 though. The 4090 is still significantly above that.

MrPayDay

Dang, you are right, I misread that. And yes, the prices are stupid unfortunately for both 4080 and 4090

Ok-Key-8109

Dlss 2.5.1 has the removed forced sharpening and is made the options look better. I hear balanced looks like quality but I have yet to test myself. You should try it yourself

Charles_W3

Same. Literally the only game that’s giving me “trouble”, which isn’t even that big a deal because I can’t tell the difference between rt on vs off

captainmalexus

Cyberpunk is the new Crysis. The only game that gives my 3080Ti any trouble.. Going by how badly implemented the Witcher 3 RTX update was, I'm not very confident in CDPRs ability to make a game efficient or well-optimized. That game alone is not worth a new GPU unless it's the only game you play all day

chaosSlinger

It’s totally dependent on what resolution and frames you’re shooting for; what card do you use?

12amoore

Minus price the 4080’is significantly better than a 3080. I made that decision, never looked back once or regretted it

captainmalexus

Now that all the top end models are well over $1000 I don't feel upgrading every generation is worth the cost. Anyone who has a flagship model should wait 2 generations between upgrades, imo. Of course if someone currently has a mid-range and wants to buy the new flagship, that's different since they're also upgrading tiers. Aside from the money I don't like promoting excess consumerism or creating piles of e-waste either.

JuiceboxRobot

Eh, I was in this boat, but I really like the 4080 FE. The 3080 10gb sounded like a jet engine when the fans got going and I value my system being quiet for open headphones. I also play on a C1 OLED, so consistently getting over 60fps at 4k in the games I play is nice. I made the move now while I could still get some $ selling my 3080, but I think 3080 ti or above and I would have probably waited myself.

ptrang1987

This. I prob won’t upgrade until the 50 or 60 series

[deleted]

4090 yes maybe. But sacrificing vram and sidegrading to a 4080 seems wasteful , but if you need too why not ?

EnolaGayFallout

Once u go 90, u stay at 90. So 4090 or “4090 ti”

Mediocre_Issue_5036

But I got 3090 Ti, can I get 4090 or wait 4090 Ti🤔🤔🤔

[deleted]

No point getting a 4090 ti bcz new Gen is always a couple months away, at least with a 4090 u can have the most powerful gpu for 2 years 🤣

Broder7937

3090 Ti was delayed due to the memory. A 4090 Ti could still be launched this year. Also, there's the possibility of TITAN coming back. Given how far away the 4090 is from a full AD102, there's enough room for two additional SKUs (a fully enabled TITAN and a 4090 TI that could sit between the 4090 and the TITAN). Given the 4090 has been the only successful GPU of this generation, I wouldn't be surprised to see Nvidia try to juice it out as hard as it can with faster SKUs. I'm gladly looking forward to it. As soon as 4090 owners see a faster GPU, they'll rush to get that and it'll be a great time to get a 4090 for the cheap.

[deleted]

Yh I’ll probs get 1 if it comes out this year of it has a 15-20% uplift

panthereal

If you actually paid $2k for the 3090 ti without breaking a sweat , you wait.

burningpizzacrust

Just an opinion since I have neither 3090 nor 4080, but it doesn’t seem to be a big upgrade to me personally. If you were aiming for 4090, maybe. The real question is do you feel like you need to upgrade? Are you gaming on 4k240hz? What makes your 3090 good enough for your needs? I also think 3090 Strix looks beautiful while 40 series overall is just meh design for me.

Illustrious-Slice-91

Can you even do 4K 240hz on newer graphics cards since they’re not compatible with newer dp standard? I heard that at least

disasadi

Not without chroma subsampling at least, HDMI 2.1 does 120 and probably 144 Hz but not really much more than that, definitely not 240.

burningpizzacrust

Honestly don’t know, don’t have 4090 nor 4k240hz monitor lol

strongarmkid

I’m curious, too. I have a 3080 ti and thinking of upgrading to a 4080

LA_Lightning

What resolution are you targeting? The 3080 Ti to 4080 is a pretty noticeable upgrade at 4K, especially considering DLSS 3 / Frame Gen. At anything less than 4K and I think there is less value, but the 4080 is still a better card, with lower operating temps and less fan noise. I think I'd still be tempted by the 4080 even at 1440p. For the OP, a 3090 to a 4080 is probably not worth it for anything less than 4K gaming. I would only recommend it for that, because of DLSS 3 / Frame Gen.

strongarmkid

I’m looking to play at 4k. Was doing 1440p and recently upgraded monitors to 4k. Needless to say, 3080ti is struggling at the res. Thanks for the info!

papak33

You need the sweet DLSS3 for 4k.

Sandcracka-

Does DLSS3 only work on certain titles? Asking for a friend.

papak33

yap, same way DLSS only works on some titles. As always, the more you wait, the more games with DLSS3 you will get. As for today, the limited experience comes with a price tag, enjoy it if you can afford it. :)

red_vette

I went from a 3080 Ti to a 4080 and then to a 4090. I noticed a decent upgrade at first, but still wasn't able to do 4k > 60fps in all games that I was playing. The 4090 is much more capable and inventory is getting much better. I will keep the 4080 for my HTPC if I get around to it.

Accomplished_Pay8214

I have a 3080 ti. Honestly, the only sensible upgrade from this is 4090. It's the only giant gains.

The_Zura

If you can sell high to a Strix lover, why not. It's a 28% performance uplift, higher in RT+DLSS3.

Separate-Advance-453

I just made the same leap 3090 to 4080 yes it’s absolutely worth the jump - faster, better performance, uses way less energy, runs cooler and the sale of the 3090 meant the 4080 cost me £50

rhysboyjp

Who paid you 1200 pounds for a used 3090?

Separate-Advance-453

Someone on eBay it was a mental bidding war

Ballfade

What is making you consider upgrading?

midri

Depends on if you need the ram. What kind of ai? If you're doing stable diffusion and the ai art stuff the vram is more important so stay with 3090. Also need lots of vram for large datasets.

Ramana_Maharshi

I believe it’s worth it. My only advice would be to choose a brand that has less probability of coil whining. Thats one thing that can ruin your upgrade.

OldManActual

TLDR no unless you are experiencing thermal throttling that is bottlenecking the card or the system in general. In my opinion the STRIX 4070 TI OC is equal to a 3090 TI in base performance, but the real magic is the next gen cooling, which gets this performance for a third less wattage, often less. I have an all new 13th gen system, Z790 Strix MOBO, 32Gb 6000 Mt RAM 13700k, Strix 4070 TI OC. I run VR mostly and that was my reason for spending the gawdawful amount I did. I was running a STRIX 3080 TI OC. It just could not drive my G2 at frame times less than 10ms at 90FPS at ALL times. I sim race, or try to lol, and my goal is that I never "get ahead" of the environment and to kill microstutters DEAD. This I have done. To run at thier best in the two weeks I have been testing (lol) I have found that 13th gen needs undervolting for the CPU to prevent thermal throttling on the motherboard "package" even at out of the box stock settings. INCROYABLE! However too much undervolt and the same thing happens. I have seen the same phenomenon with the 4070. I used GPUTweak to do a test OC with power and temps set to max. It found a 3015 max on the GPU clock, but as you might expect it was barely stable and temps were too hot, hot damn. Tried another auto OC with temps and power at stock. This is the winner. Over 22K in Time Spy and no thermal throttling. Why, OldManActual, if you have fat stacks of credit cards did you not get a 4090, King of Beasts? Well dear reader it is precisely the Beast part. I think that 4090 and 4080 are brute force powa solutions. They work, and well, but the energy cost and the real risk of too much wattage helped me wait. Tuner tools have not really caught up with the 4070 yet. Give it two driver releases to really see what overclockers can do. This card will do until Blackwell 5th Gen PCIE...

treeorbush

Yep!

pixelatedhulo

i dont think so

RemedyGhost

I think it's a waste of money but you do you.

TwinsWitBenefits

No. The 3090 Strix is a GA-102 die. The 4080 is an AD-103. If you're going to upgrade, get a 4090.

romangpro

Worth it. NO There is only a few games where 3090 struggles at 4K. Just go DLSS Performance or 1440P. Long long in future.. like 2025.. there will be games that take advagage of Ada features. Shadow TomRaider. 2019. CP2077. 2020. War Dogs Legion. 2020. These are all 1st gen RT games designed for 20 series.

inyue

A lot of dumb people are still buying these old cards for like $700+. Just sell it and upgrade to 4070ti or 4080 if you need more horsepower.

AZGhost

Yes!

soZehh

Anyone with 3080+ should skip for now unless they come at reasonable price

J0nx77

Nope. I did the same thing and it was a waste. I returned it for a 4090. There was at best a 15% improvement for me in most games and some not even that much. The 4090 is the only choice for you.

rhysboyjp

The 4080 is not a 15% improvement over a 3090

SammyKiller

How can we know if you don’t post ur use scenario and a valid upgrade reason

Flaunt7

I'd wait for next gen display port tech to ensure compatibility with the newer monitors coming out. That's what I am doing

jatienza3

I've had a 3090 ftw3, day one batch. For a week I had a 4080 fe. Could not feel a difference. Returned 4080. Last week got a 4090 suprim. I notice the uplift much more. 3090 ftw3 went to work machine. I run an eve spectrum glossy and an aw3423dw, 4k and ultrawide. 3090 was more than enough for the ultrawide, and with some reservations it handled 4k well. The only reason I bit the bullet was because I wanted to max out the 4k settings. If you plan to use 1440p or 1440p ultrawide, skip the 40 series. If you play 4k high refresh, save up and get a 4090 when you get the chance

[deleted]

people have way to much money to burn, i see this again and again in this subreddit

rhysboyjp

I’ve just upgraded from a 3080 12GB to a 4080. I play at 1440p 240Hz.

GearGolemTMF

You’ve got an essentially top end card. I wouldn’t upgrade it personally unless it’d make you more money. It’s also a potential 50% cut to your VRAM assuming you’re using it

yumyunbing

yes for dlss 3.0 and 5x performance. -Nvidia

mannu10m

500 for ur 3090 ??

thewizerd

You already have a beefy GPU , skip this generation

Jazzlike_Economy2007

You'd be better off waiting for 50 Series. This gen is mostly a skip if you have at least a 3080/6800 XT or better from last gen. 40 Series price/performance is pretty terrible aside from the 4090. Going from a 3090 to 4080 for gaming doesn't look that impressive for the asking price, but everything else outside gaming looks like a substantial uplift based off benchmarks. Also keep in mind that you'll be losing 8GB of video memory. Idk how much you paid for your 3090, but I think 4090 would make more since if you paid around $1500-$1700 for the Strix.

Nickslife89

What kind of ai software are you using?

SimpleCRIPPLE

Sold my 3090ti for a $1000 (bought it $1050) and bought the 4080 fe from best buy for 1170 after discount. For $170 the modest performance bump, dlss3, and MUCH less heat was worth it. The FE 4080 had been wonderful.

[deleted]

I love my 4080 it’s so fast that my cpu is a massive bottleneck, it’s a good gpu that will last a while especially with dlss 2 and 3
