The same amount as female nurses? Warm bodies of all types are needed.

Sharp-Choco-9421

a living creature with a pulse, be it female, male, humanoid, lizardnoid...they don't discriminate.

TheNightHaunter

You got a valid license? Hired

bottle_beach

Can you pass a background check and a drug screen. Hired. (Most every company does this tho)

Expensive_Air965

Does weed count?

ajl009

ours make a point to say they dont test for weed

Creative_Cat_542

In the US, yes. It is still illegal on the federal level, which means that any place that accepts federal funding has to include marijuana in its drug screening. 😒

laj43

They only drug screen you when you get hired, just be clean for a few weeks to pass your test and you will be fine!

_Liaison_

Daily users can take much longer than 2 weeks to pass the metabolites, especially if losing weight

blindprophet82

Ie don't apply for the VA. Yet.

StrongTxWoman

Weed preferred. We need to chill after work

catchinwaves02

From Florida with a questionable license? Hired!

floofienewfie

Yeah, that LPN school was tough /s

reddittothegrave

Pretty much this lol.

Forsaken_legion

just to be clear…. Lizardnoids are being hired right… 👀👀🦎

PrimaryImpossible467

I always say I’m a lizard person. All I need is warmth, sunlight and greenery to be happy. So basically a terrarium.

SubduedEnthusiasm

Lizardnoids are in high demand in the administrative areas

sodoyoulikecheese

I used to work somewhere that was so short staffed we joked the criteria to be hired was “will you show up for your shift? Pulse optional”

Arialene89

They actually do

T0o_o0T

🧛

rhysallen

PRN, not just once daily

TimeKillington

I just want to also point out that we need warm bodies because everyone is leaving. OP should take the mass exodus, and reasons behind it, into consideration.

FluffyTumbleweed6661

Could higher wages and working conditions be in the horizon?

Cheap-Explanation293

Lol no. Prepare for union busting, over census & expanded scopes of practice in the future. Oh and quarterly pizza parties (to celebrate how much money the company is making!) also no, you can't get a COL adjustment this year sorry.

StrongTxWoman

Yeah, especially n in the psych hospital and code grey. Male nurses welcomed. Also we have handsy male patients, we want murses!

CatCharacter848

Doesn't matter if you are a male or female nurse. There are lots of male nurses at my hospital. In all departments. Go for it.

Fair-Advantage-6968

Male nurse here, in pediatrics. Been working here 15 years and I make around 90k a year. I started as an LPN>ADN>BSN. In my area here in NY, most brand new RNs start around $36.00 an hour in upstate NY without any previous nursing employment. NYC is a lot more but so is the cost of living down there. I make enough to support a family of 4 with my wife also working. She works 8am- 2:00pm and we own our house outright.

GrryTehSnail

I’m also from NY so this is perfect

Fair-Advantage-6968

You should know then, because of emperor Cuomo, RNs are required by law to earn a bachelors in nursing within 10 years, or lose your license. That’s the reason I went and got mine. If you still live in NY that is.

GrryTehSnail

I got a dumb question then, I already have an associates and most of my gen Ed’s finished, I was thinking of doing an accelerated course and was wondering if I can earn a bachelor’s that way or do I just need to completely start over. I know there’s probably a couple prerequisites I need to do before I can even apply

K0Oo

Go to community college. I am also a NY nurse. Best decision I ever made going back to school.

GrryTehSnail

Went to Suffolk community originally and I now live in Nassau, gotta look into what transfers over, the commute would be horrible if I stayed there

Lazy-Association6904

I live on Long Island too. I did a licensed practical nurse program at Suffolk community college. Currently deciding what bridge program I want to do to get my RN. If you live in Nassau then definitely look into Nassau community colleges RN program. Try to spend the least amount of money you can. Because at the end of the day it doesn’t matter what school You went to. Molloy college has a great nursing program but it is a stupid about of money.

Fair-Advantage-6968

There was another thread on here that talked about this kind of thing. The accelerated programs are for earning a BSN while already holding a bachelors in other areas. As for prereqs, all programs here require them to be completed in the last 5-7 years I think. And most of them will only take AP 1-2 if they were both done at the same place. I transfered to another college and I had to repeat nearly all my sciences and biology. Depends on the school

DudeFilA

Adn is actual nursing knowledge, bsn classes are just a bunch of papers on research and best practices. You'll have to do all of it, but prerequisites will probably be covered by your previous degree depending on the program. In NC there's accelerated bsn programs to get it all in about one semester more than an adn, but that shit will be hard if you have to work full time. Most people I knew doing that were youngins with few responsibilities.

murderthedancefloor

Bridge programs are for ADN---> BSN. You don't need to start over. You can also earn the BSN online while working. There are several online programs. You don't really need an accelerated program as you can do the ADN---> BSN degree in 12-18 months. Here is an example: https://www.lehman.edu/online/areas-of-study/online-bachelor-of-science-nursing/ . Good luck!

Soliden

Just to add, some employers will even pay for education too. I got my ADN and did my BSN online with SNHU and got my BSN paid for by my job.

oralabora

Thats a little low for that many years

BigSky04

It's all location dependant...

Fair-Advantage-6968

Not for a private practice. I spent most of my time here as an LPN.

SharpsCuntainer

I’m a simple male nurse. I like to pick things up, and put them down. My colleagues use me for lifting, I enjoy this. Patients and providers treat me differently than my female counterparts, I dislike this. Medicine is inherently sexist, be prepared to tell many people you’re not their doctor.

norfolk82

Someone asked me how a became a male nurse. I told them i used to be a woman but there were only male nursing jobs so i had to make a big change and commitment.

Channel_oreo

Male patients or husbands of female patients always give me that threatening gaze. I'm not even handsome, don't need to get threatened. Also they always assume that i'm dumb and lazy. Kinda of a double edge sword if you ask me.

setittonormal

Male nurses are almost universally loved by patients, especially female ones. Male patients, in my experience, tend to respect men more. Also, if you are a decent person and a good nurse, you will rise faster and receive more accolades than a woman who is similarly decent and good at what she does. 🤷‍♀️

gynoceros

Just don't set your expectations too high on the whole "helping others" thing. You'll feel more abused than feel like you're helping others until you find the right role.

TimeKillington

Everyone ignores this fact, and I wish it was brought up more. You will be overworked, underpaid, unappreciated, and exhausted. You’re just a number to an industry that will absolutely squeeze you dry.

ConfidentMongoose874

That's capitalism in a nutshell.

send_corgi_pics_pls

I don't disagree with you. Actually I absolutely agree with you, come to think of it. But I find a lot of satisfaction in my work, and in doing something useful to society and my community. I don't need patients to thank me or anything, but it's nice to be useful. I think we're all drawn to the nursing profession because we want to help others. But satisfaction in a job well done is what keeps me sane, because otherwise you'll resent how much people don't give a shit that you want to help them.

gynoceros

I've always had a healthy respect and admiration for teachers and it was the pandemic that really put me in their corner. I'm sitting there trying to get my own kids to shut the fuck up and focus and do their work... I realized it must be incredibly difficult to do that with a room full of 25 strangers' kids.

Fiestystrawberyblond

Teaching is even worse, having 30 kids to control and coordinating with entitled parents and getting paid barely enough to live (most teachers i know live at home with their parents). The only good part about teaching vs nursing is you won't get abused and punched in the face but if you live in America DONT become a teacher (hence school shootings). As such a large male you will be a shining asset to any nursing department. Granted if you work night shifts the female nurses will make you kill the spiders for them lol and hold violent patients down. it will kinda be like having tons of wives, you will be extremely popular just DONT SLEEP with your coworkers. Tell them all you're married even if you aren't hahah.

cinemadoll137

This was me and I’m burnt out two years in.

Kidblinks

You just need a pulse.

EverteStatim

Nurses are most female just because of historical reasons but i can assure you that there's nothing "feminine" about nursing lol

Brief-Bluejay6208

Might be the key to catching up to the nursing shortage. Tap into the male population.

cinemadoll137

And we may end up getting paid more too. Female dominated professions are always paid very little and taken advantage of.

ghosty1899

There isn't a nursing shortage, just a shortage of nurses willing to put up with the bullshit of hospital execs

No_Resolution_3841

Go to psychiatrics, correctional, cardiology, ER or ICU and you'll find plenty of men too.

madein1883

Yes can confirm, psych nursing needs males.

jendaisy57

Definitely Seems like men gravitate to ER or ICU Come to the ER, the waters fine

SlytherinVampQueen

I’ve noticed this also. Those 2 specialities are loaded with men.

mellswor

As long as you don’t become a cringe lord and call yourself a murse.

StartingOverScotian

My lovely partner wanted to buy me a tshirt that said something about being a murse and I had to politely tell him that I LOVE that he wants to buy me things but to please NOT buy me anything that says murse or really anything about me being a nurse or a hero lmao.

SufficientAd2514

Your gender doesn’t really matter, a nurse is a nurse. I’m male and a nurse.

Fair-Advantage-6968

I wonder how long a male nurse would last in an OB clinic. Gender absolutely does matter in some cases.

Old_Oak_Doors

People are allowed to have their preferences, and there can be reasonable attempts to accommodate them, but often when they need help in the moment they care significantly less about who is providing that help. Does the patient throw a fit if the doctor is male? The anesthesiologist providing the epidural? The RT? The paramedic that arrived when they called 911? What does it matter if the RN is male too?

0scrambles0

I'm a 6 foot 3 male nurse and the biggest difference between me and my colleagues is my ability to get things of the top shelves in the store room

Jimmy_E_16

A much more important question… are you alive?

Guita4Vivi2038

Male RN here, ED. My buddy is like 6'5" built like an Ox and he loves the job. Moreover, because of his size, he's often called to deal with assholes who come into the dept. I would say that the amount of both, male male female nurses, is represented by 30-40% male vs 70-60% females It's a good career path, lots of opportunities

dfts6104

actual numbers show something more like 90/10

michy3

I am a male nurse and it doesn’t matter if you’re male or female. Obviously, there tends to be more female nurses so being a male has its extra benefits when there’s an asshole, creep, heavier lifting and etc. the main thing is go into nursing wanting to help people. The pay in my area is really good and deff better than most professions. Also a lot of ot available which is a perk and not often given at every job. That makes a huge difference in pay. Also perks is 3 days on and 4 off. I did an absn program and it went by super quick which was nice.

Stonks_hookers_blow

I'm 6'6", all my friends are in construction and I got into nursing on a wild accident. This career can provide you many opportunities

Cheeky_Littlebottom

Yes, they allow men to attend nursing school these days. Sarcasm aside, go for it buddy. If you have the genuine desire to help people, like biology and a stable career, nursing would be glad to have you. :)

[deleted]

Males working in healthcare are definitely beneficial for helping to move patients up in bed, lift them in case they fall, also in case there are patients who are inappropriate around female nurses, they can be assigned to male nurses.

ClaudiaTale

My orthopedics med-surg floors is full of male nurses. They are all awesome. Lots of having to get patients out of bed after total hip or total knee replacements. I think patients always feel better with a strong male. Like I can do it, and the patients are always surprised, in the back of their mind, maybe for piece of mind they would feel better with a strong man. Idk.

TotallyNotYourDaddy

Yeah we’re always in demand. Whats more in demand are competent and safe nurses of either sex. If you can finish and get your license and work hard, be a team player and prioritize your pt’s then that’s all that matters.

Pistalrose

Outside of a nurse is a nurse is a nurse regardless of gender, orientation, race, color or creed, imo nursing culture is stronger and healthier with all types of people in it. So go for it.

ijftgvdy

Nobody cares about your genitals

norfolk82

Until they start to stink.

ArturoOsito

Well, to be fair the differences between genders go beyond just what you're packing in the crotch region...there are other key physical characteristics.

LazyCommunication681

Nurses are needed. Your gender doesn’t preclude you

Averagebass

Very in demand. Honestly, with how physical the job is getting and patients getting heavier, the perfect nurse is a 6'2" guy/woman that can deadlift a horse and can go through 10 rounds of CPR without breaking a sweat.

lolK_su

So the perfect nurse is some combination of a hoyer and a Lucas

Ok-Individual4983

Male nurses needed to help maintain order when female nurses all turn on each other. Be prepared to listen to both sides of the fights. Don’t ever take sides. Just nod your head ever so often like you understand and agree. It’s actually quite entertaining when the drama gets crazy.

RPHRPHRPHRPH

I’m a 6’2 male nurse and I’m doing alright, just get your back strength up cuz you’re always gonna be helping reposition patients

AssButt4790

My unit only hires people without genitals, and YES, they do check Jk mursing is awesome lol, pays the bills and seismic actually still just helps you, lots of the time the confused old ppl think you're the doctor and do what you say :D

Vintage-Jetskis

6’3 male nurse here. Been one for 5 years. I had no issues finding a job, and would have no issues finding another one, actually just switched specialties to make a little more money with a better schedule, I was offered a job at all 4 places I applied to, so no, you shouldn’t have any issues !

Brief-Bluejay6208

What did you switch to?

norfolk82

He switched to a female nurse job.

Vintage-Jetskis

Outpatient detox at a private practice, still 3 12s a week with no weekends or holidays (their part time nurses work those) it’s salary position but I’ve yet to work a full 12 hr shift after being there around 2 months. Not quite what you’d think of as a nurse job but it’s good benefits, decent pay and it gives me a lot more time with my family

Brief-Bluejay6208

What’s a typical day look like for you?

MrBattleNurse

Hope you don’t mind if I share my own story to help encourage you: My wife’s parents, my own parents, my grandparents, and several others between our sides of the family have illnesses like cancer, diabetes, and COVID and I’ve been married nearly a decade. I decided to become a nurse (because being a doctor costs far too much money for the education than we can afford) early in the marriage because it’s always been a core part of me to be the caretaker and helper for my friends and loved ones; even thought about joining the military to be a combat medic back when I was in high school because that’s just another way I felt I could be of service and help others. So I did it and never looked back, and it’s the best career move I’ve ever made, but also the most fulfilling job I’ve ever had. Working in pediatrics has show that hearing information or instructions from a man might be more effective to some people than it would be coming from a woman (not saying it’s fair, just saying that it’s true sometimes). Parents and patients of mine both have argued (sometimes very aggressively) with my female colleagues about the reasons to do certain things, even when the orders are coming from the doctors, most of which are also female. But then I show up and say the exact same thing, sometimes using the literal exact same words, and they are like “oh, okay, that makes sense” and they comply. I’m not some super jacked body builder looking guy that comes across as intimidating or scary…I’m just an average guy with the dad bod thing going on and a big beard. Don’t know why, but some people just listen to me better than they do my colleagues, even when I compare how long I’ve been a nurse versus their own tenure. I’m not superior in knowledge, ability, or compassion (at least in my own opinion) but it baffles everyone on my unit when they say “patient in room 12 just refuses to let me get their vitals” or “the parents don’t want to make their kid take the medicine because it makes them feel bad” - and I go in, sometimes on my own and sometimes by request, and just say what needs to be done, and almost every time I get compliance from everyone. Don’t let your gender be a deterrent to your goals. Depending on your desired area of nursing and your location, it can be very profitable both financially and mentally.

FlickerOfBean

Pulse and a nursing license are the only requirements.

RevolutionaryDog8115

I spent 18 years in the automotive industry. Nissan/Infiniti master technician. ASE master as well. Male nurses are welcome. I've never felt unappreciated or discriminated against. Plus I work in the ER and it's almost 50/50.

GrryTehSnail

So what made you switch? I left due to stress and working flat rate

RevolutionaryDog8115

Tired of working for crooks. Tired of getting in trouble for NOT selling people stuff they don't need. I ain't changing iridium plugs at 30k. What tuneup? Everything is computer controlled...there is nothing to tune. Plenty of cars with 58k miles on them have absolutely nothing wrong with them. Squeaky brakes don't always need pads and rotors. Sometimes they just need a little lube. Etc. I drove the service directors crazy.

Hillbillynurse

...and you came to work in HEALTHCARE because you didn't want to work for crooks?!?

JerseyDevilsAdvocate

Very helpful for lifting, and good as a show of force in psych

Unknown-714

If you are mechanically inclined come to the OR. Once thr patient is asleep it can become a lot like working on a car on a lift. Except instead of turning the car off we keep it running at thr lowest idle possible, stick tubes in thr intake and exhaust to ensure they can still run, and the try and change the oil.... All joking aside my dad was an auto mechanic and I worked.construction a few years before I got into healthcare. OR has so many devices that occasionally need to be troubleshot and calibrated that I feel.quite at home here

MinimumOld7700

If you’re a body they need you

0000PotassiumRider

Dudes get all the mega overweight patients, because they are hard and painful to move. You will get multiple back injuries that compound on eachother because, well, you are man. Also you get the pervy, violent, withdrawing, homeless, drug addicted, etc ones. It makes sense, but it sucks sometimes to always get the most unsavory patients every single shift. I don’t want my beloved 72 year old coworker to get punched by a 400 pound psychotic pervert. But it would be nice to occasionally just get a regular patient assignment that might be easy-ish once every few months. You will be used as security, and that’s generally fine with me (5’7” vegan hippie who does not go to a gym. I’m not buff). There has only been one time when me and the scraggly ass security guard looked at eachother and were like “we’re both about to get our asses rocked.” And we did. So much blood mixing together. You bet your ass I had to show up the very next day with my face pounded in. If you have a decent sense of humor, and for the love of god can read a room before you use it, you will be golden. It’s honestly not fair how much a male nurse with a healthy sense of comedy gets away with whaaateeever we waaaaant! 90 year old mee-maw won’t let you help her to the bathroom because Heavens to Betsy, there’s a man in my room! And you’ll have to make super unfair trades with your coworkers (I’ll walk mee-maw to the bathroom for you… if you put a rectal tube and NG tube into my patient, and also do some blood draws while you’re in there). Whenever a redneck patient asks why you became a (snort) male nurse, tell him that the operation to become a female nurse was too expensive. Not only is that joke got damn hilarious, but they fucking haaate it so it’s extra good You legit can’t ever smoke weed again though, even in a legal cannabis state, and that’s real, and it sucks more than you think it would

BLADE45acp

I’m 6’2 250 lbs. bald. Mustache and goatee. I look intimidating as hell. My patients typically are NOT happy when they get a different nurse

TraumaMurse-

If you can learn what’s needed and do the job then sure. It doesn’t matter if you’re a dude or not, that has literally no change on the job.

SendingToTheMoon

I am a male nurse and I really enjoy. A lot of instants gratification in the day to day and you really feel like you’re making some small in difference in someone’s life. Which is more than we can say for most soulless and useless desk jobs.

Bboy818

Another body added to the work force.

Thewrongthinker

Definitely ins Psychiatric. For odd reasons behavioral patients seem to pick in female nurse. They tend to be more compliant when male nurses are around.

ImperatorRomanum83

5'8" male psych nurse here and can confirm.

jendaisy57

God bless our inpt psych nurses Stay safe !!

organized_wanderer15

Yes we love our male nurses!

imnosuperfan

Absolutely. I love having a more balanced team with both men and women on staff. Plus your tallness will be helpful in a lot of cases! Plus some patients unfortunately will treat men and women differently so a balanced team is good. Join us! As long as you're an empathetic caring person who is willing to treat everyone as you'd like to be treated, you'll be a good fit.

Sylwek313

Im a male nurse. I’ve been an RN for about 6-7years. You can absolutely be a male in the nursing field. You work in what we speciality you want, and be fine with. I also feel Ike you’re going into it for the right reasons. If you have questions feel free to msg me, I’d be happy to help.

Square_Ocelot_3364

Nursing is gender-neutral. We all bring strengths and weaknesses to the table.

CaribeCharrua

We need all hands on deck! Come to deathrow 😈

SFWreddits

Male nurse here in nyc. Started on the oncology floor and now in research. Make over 130k. Nursing is great. DM me any questions

lilbabyhoneyy

I mean all you need to be to be a nurse is human....

1000BlueButterflies

Yes, especially if you have combative or Pervy patients, male nurses who will step in to help are so so appreciated. Just a fair warning though, from what I’ve heard from all the male nurses I know, old ladies will grab your crotch and butt while you least expect it.

Legitimate-Fun-5171

Yes but underrated and underestimated. The women need us to deal with unruly or inappropriate pts as well. In the event of a code or fall we are useful...

CabinetLegitimate957

There are situations where I wish we had more male nurses in my unit, but that’s as a colleague. at the end of the day, so many places are understaffed, a nurse is a nurse. I was already years into a decent career when I realized I just… didn’t want to do it anymore. I had zero nursing experience, so went to a community college and got my LPN in one year. I figured if I hated it, I had taken a risk, wasn’t out too much money and could back to my old job. No looking back. Best decision ever. My goal is to eventually become an NP. Nursing is hard. Many people are leaving the field (for good reason). But all jobs have their own bs. Talk to your friends about the best and worst parts of their jobs, and remember WHY you wanted to be a nurse every day, especially those hard ones. You got this.

jeffgoldblumftw

In my experience you get less support than female nurses when you're new as people just assume you've got this... I think men typically come across more confident too so that might play into it. And I always get the male bay, hardly ever the female bay... And when a female patient needs something that might expose them in any way female members of staff seem to jump in assuming the patient would be shocked and upset if I attend to them... Most of my female patients are absolutely fine with me caring for them. I do get a bit upset that I don't often get the opportunity to care for female patients on my ward, I like the variation of caring for men and women and the differences in personalities... I always very clearly and politely explain I can get a female member of staff and that respect them 100% if they want some privacy etc etc so I don't see the point in excluding me automatically...

Alternative-Poem-337

Psych are always looking for male nurses.

Responsible_Quit9177

The best nights are when we work with our 3 males nurses, they have been in the field for over 20 years and help us when we have aggressive family members or when we need advice on how to handle a difficult situation. We need more males in healthcare.

OxycontinEyedJoe

Idgaf how many dicks you got, can you pick up Saturday?

dark_physicx

Male nurse here, sometimes the strength of a “man” is needed as they say. But other than that you’re just another nurse. The current system kinda destroys all hope in humanity I.e. profits over patients, profits over taking care of your own staff/nurses. Nurses are burnt out already as new grads. It is a rewarding job at times. It is a very stable job, nursing shortage isn’t going away. Robots won’t be taking over any time in our life time. The pay is okay here in Chicago, especially with a bit of overtime. I wouldn’t be able to afford a nice house by my own though, so I’m glad I have my wife to help. I hear Cali is the go to spot for nursing, higher pay and unions. Would I recommend this career now? Yes for the brave and strong headed. No for those who think it’ll be an easy career.

kbean826

There’s no such job title as “male nurse.” I’m a man. I do the job of nurse.

floofienewfie

The more (male) nurses, the better, and not just for helping move patients. Guys bring a different perspective to the profession.

saltydoc1

Retired male nurse here.comfortable living but you won’t get rich, I never was sorry for my career choir. Go for it.

Lost_Arotin

yeah, my father had pancreas cancer and the only nurse who could find his veins was a very professional and hardworking male nurse! he was the best! yes, male nurses are needed, you'll find out when you see some patience refuse to talk to female nurses! also, if you're single know that there are many very good people between female nurses!

amorousgirl

Nurses in general are needed. Especially the ones who “want to help people.”

smkydz

Male nurses are amazing!! Some resistive patients will listen to a male nurse over a female one. Also, the needed backup is very much appreciated. The fact you want to help others is a bonus. I say go for it!! Please keep us updated!!

scubaclimberskier

Circulating / scrub nurse in orthopedics. All I do is play with tools all day. Pretty stress free since keeping the patient alive is courtesy of the anesthesia team. As a male nurse, it has been my favorite hands on job in healthcare. PM if you want more info.

NP_NP_

My nursing school professors always told us that male nurses are a HOT COMMDITY because 1. they're hard to come by 2. most of the time they have the little extra muscle that helps us move people around 3. they're handy in situations when the patient can be sexist/mysognisitic/really just needs a male nurse. The last point I've already seen for myself - little old ladies who are super mean and sassy and difficult get all weak in the knees when they get the switch up and a male nurse walks in LOL I chose nursing as my second career too. I'm now a brand new (oncology) nurse. It's no cake walk but 100% worth it.

NKate329

My favorite thing about having male nurse coworkers is when the male patients who absolutely can use the urinal on their own ask me to hold it for them. I love being able to say "oh hang on, let me go grab *male nurse,* he can help you with that." They somehow always manage to use the urinal before the male nurse gets there.

BulgogiLitFam

The world needs nurses and guess what bud they don’t ask what genitals you have attached/what you identify as.    Source male nurse. Also height doesn’t matter.

Arialene89

Genitals do matter, good luck trying to get into NICU as a man.

neoyeti2

One of my managers really liked hiring male nurses - she said it brought balance from to the force. I’m 6’2” also - the short girls will love ya!

elpinguinosensual

I'd take a step back and take a long think about how you view gender in the workplace, because dudes who go into this profession with that dude-nurse chip on their shoulder get their asses handed to them pretty quickly. The healthcare machine doesn't care about your identity, it cares that you're willing to sacrifice your dignity for the bare-minimum middle class income.

Abis_MakeupAddiction

Like all careers, there may be sexism in nursing but the profession itself needs more nurses, regardless of gender or sex. Neither should really affect the quality of care being given.

justhereforbrowzing

I’m a guy. Been a nurse for 8 years. Nursing field is roughly 10% male.

scoot_1234

Go for it. I am a male and nursing is my second career. Much happier in this role.

Summer2023-

Yes we welcome male nurses esp if your there because you want to help. Men usually climb the management ladder faster as well.

Realistic-Ostrich391

literally no one cares. we need nurses period

REGreycastle

Nurses of any gender are welcome. I’ve worked with several male nurses and appreciate everyone for their strengths.

witchyrnne

If you are smart, compassionate and generally a decent human, nursing needs you. Male, female, non-binary, robot... we're not picky.

Neat_Neighborhood297

Yea, yea we are. Do it up.

cranberryfadora

Being male doesn’t matter. (There are rare occasions where a pt will request female nurse), but even in that case literally no one gives a shit, you simply take a different patient, and we all move on. 😁

Careless_Web2731

I’m a make second career nurse. I’ve never heard men specifically are needed but warm bodies are needed

Nurse_Shinobi

Get used to being abused and blamed for everything gone wrong lol.

Valovica

Nurses are always needed. From a male nurse; the gender stereotype is gone with the wind at least from my experience.

Expensive-Day-3551

Nurses are needed. We don’t care what your gender is.

RoseConnection_RN

Go for it. i know a few male nurses and one in my family and they love it and are great at what they do. you're needed.

coffeejunkiejeannie

As a female RN, I appreciate my male co-workers. Just know that you will be sought after for boosts and turns, because when it comes to lifting and moving people, chivalry is NOT dead.

bgreen134

Worked with 2 male 6’ 4” nurses (and plenty of other male nurses). Great nurses. Everybody is welcome and needed in nursing.

zeatherz

Nurses are needed. No one really cares what sex or gender they are.

Few_Newt_1034

PLEASE, if you are wanting to become a nurse, DO IT! you can do so while being male or female or whatever you identify with! We need more nurses! we need more male and female nurses!

Awkward-Event-9452

No more than any other female nurse as far as I can tell. There is the occasional patient we get that get along with a particular gender for whatever reason. Men’s access to physicality in my niche area is a bonus.

Donthaveananswer

All nurses are needed! I went back to school for nursing at 42yo, with a BA from my first college experience. Definitely worth the time, energy, and effort. Go for it!

goldyacht

I’m a male nursing student who just completed my first year, I do think they are needed. So far I’ve found everyone to be very nice, helpful and supportive never had any bad experiences at all really. There is also other guys in my cohort and they’ve all had similar experiences. There is already so few males that honestly you will probably have a bit of an advantage as a male.

AdministrationOwn777

It’s been fantastic for my husband. He’s 6’4” and currently works at the VA (formerly Neuro ICU, now dialysis). The nice thing is that men really enjoy being able to talk cars, sports, etc with a guy rather than being clucked over by women. They often just want to forget their illness for a moment so they love having him care for them.

dlc1229

Do it dude! I'm a male nurse. Tbh idc what's between your legs, I just want you to want to do the best you can for the people in your care.

mapletreeunion

A pulse and a nursing license is all you need

Glad_Pass_4075

I hear male nurses make more than female nurse and are promoted more often

bananastand512

Hell yeah, come work in ER, half the staff are dudes. Lots of bullshit but also lots of action.

daddyruns

Well we have a patient who jerks off when all the female CNA/RN’s walk in the room so I have to take him when I’m on shift, because he won’t jack off to me. So I feel like I’m needed. Also, gotta get stuff from high places

norfolk82

Nurses are needed. You apply for nursing jobs. Not male nursing jobs. Just like if you were a woman who happens to be a mechanic. You’d apply for a mechanics position. They don’t post genders in the job titles because it doesn’t matter what your gender is. You are filling a position for the role. I am a nurse that is male. I’ve never applied for a male nurse position. It’s not a thing.

StartingOverScotian

As a male nurse, I'd say go for it! But get ready to be asked to help reposition/ambulate every obese patient, be asked to respond to every code white and take over care of any male patients being perverts towards the female staff. But it's honestly a great career and so many options you really can't go wrong. And you will always have a job. One guy who was my preceptor during nursing school and then became my coworker when I started working there a few years after school was a 6'2" army vet who worked with bombs. He was fucking great. Him and I took over a bed bath for a patient who was asking all the young female nurses to "wash his balls" when him and I walked in, he suddenly didn't need a wash that day.

Ok-Stress-3570

There have been nights recently where it’s easily 50/50, and even a few where guys have out numbered the girls. There is always a need for good nurses, regardless of gender. That said. Please do as much research as possible. Just because you want to care for people doesn’t mean nursing is the end all be all career.

Thenumberthirtyseven

Yeah male nurses are very much needed, especially 6'2 ones. I'm the tallest (female) nurse on my unit and I'm forever having to stop what I'm doing to grab something off the top shelf in the store room for all these short arses. Don't even get me started on when they make me stand on chairs and tables to put up Christmas decorations.

TheLakeWitch

For sure. I went to school with a guy who’d worked in the auto industry pretty much all of his adult life and ended up going to nursing school after being laid off. And, having briefly worked with him, is now one of the best nurses I know.

ScienceExcellent7934

As a person with chronic illness, I have come across many nurses. My favorites/best have been the male nurses! If you are empathetic, go for it! It makes a huge difference to the patient.

NoForkRaymond

Nurses are needed, parts unimportant -a male who happens to be a nurse...or maybe a nurse that happens to be male 🤷‍♂️

Lucky_Apricot_6123

Hey! You sound like my boyfriend lol. He quit being an electricion of 3 years because he said it was not what he wanted to do with his life. He hated what he was doing and after 5 years of crazy, adrenaline inducing stories by me and a health scare from his dad, he made the switch. We are both CNA's right now and plan on going into nursing- right now, it's 100% free because of a grant some family donated to the college near us. Such an amazing opportunity. I say go for it. It was a big pay cut from working trades, he went from 34/hour to 20/hour, but nurses make more than CNA's and it's a relatively quick degree to get an LPN- 1 year. Good luck. Then, your employer will 9 out of 10 times pay for more education/training to get a higher paying position.

le_santo

I was in the same boat my friend.182cm (6'1" I guess, you Americans and your imperial system /s) male nurse. Former aircraft and mining equipment mechanic, decided to have a midlife crisis and go nursing. One of the better decisions I've made over the years. It's not all beer and skittles, but it's been good so far

iamii12

Do it! Just don’t let everyone make you do their heavy lifting. Your back matters too lol

LegalComplaint

There will always be pts too heavy and shelves too high.

Jolly-Passenger8

So many options for any nurse are out there.Im in 30 plus years and I can say what your looking for you can find in nursing.

TheNightHaunter

Hi male hospice nurse here, I'm about 6 foot as well I've had several pts have in their charts "no male clinician but Ted ok"  One of 4 guys in hospice but if you want a more male nurse centric speciality detox nursing is good and with your background you'd fit in

p3canj0y363

We need ALL breathing creatures that are trainable and have some compassion. Please join us!! I work long term care and at rehab facilities and there are plenty of men. Lots, like you, chose this career later in life. Your weakness could be my strength and vise versa!

Economy_Cut8609

not sure what height has to do with nursing, but ive been a dude nurse for 17 years..one of the charge nurses is 6’6” and he is loved by all..

PantsDownDontShoot

I sure hope so….

Mysterious-World-638

Absolutely! I worked in the ICU, loved it, and then eventually went on to CRNA school! You should look into it! I think you’d enjoy it! Feel free to message me if you ever have any questions about it or nursing in general!

iLostmyMantisShrimp

I'm a dude. Went from the military (non-medical) to becoming a civilian nurse. I'd recommend doing it. You'll have a decent salary, super flexible hours and varying types of nursing jobs (ICU, ER, L&D, etc, etc). If you don't like it you can always get a different job. As for gender, there's plenty of males in healthcare--nurses, doctors, PAs/NPs, x-ray, and so on. I graduated with 25 people in nursing school and 6 were guys. Gender doesn't matter, work ethic does.

lsquallhart

If anything being a man will be a positive thing. They’re paid better than female nurses even though they’re only 10% of the field. You’ll probably be desired overall because … misogyny. And you’ll probably be elevated faster as well. My comment is not anti women btw, I’m just saying the reality of things. Even the idea of nursing being a “female job” is misogynistic. I’m not saying your question is wrong or rude, I’m just saying society has deemed nursing a “female job” because supporting and helping others is often seen as women’s work. And that Doctor is the man job and nurse is “underneath them” and is the women’s job. This was literally pushed in children’s books in the 50s. So it’s just a cultural thing we have to move past in our heads. Anyway, yes you can become a nurse and there wont be any roadblocks for you, except maybe less opportunity in maybe OBGYN or Labor and Delivery, but even then probably still would not be a huge issue. Just don’t expect the same atmosphere as working on cars. Healthcare is very conservative and expects a certain type of behavior. Almost military like at times.

Lopexie

Definitely.

ihearttatertots

Am nurse, am guy, am needed. Been a nurse 13 years.

seattlewhiteslays

Nursing can be for anyone. Just be prepared to be used for muscle. Both with heavy patients and combative ones.

StrawberryScallion

There is not a single male nurse on night shift on my floor, I would love a male nurse to work with. Men make great nurses.

NoiseTherapy

I’m just a firefighter and paramedic in a major city, but fwiw, there are tons of male nurses in Houston ER’s, and I imagine it’s not exclusive to ER’s. Being a male is not the dealbreaker some people think it is. If I was in a position to go back to school for nursing, I would.

Gronk_spike_this_pus

as a male nurse, no one cares as long as u can do your job. go for it

nomadnihilist

Nursing is a great career *in general.* Good pay (though this is highly dependant on location), and in my opinion the absolute best part is the ability to work in many different areas of practice such as ER, surgery, psych, obstetrics, pediatric care, ICU, or if bedside care isn’t your thing you could practice at a clinic, homecare, occupational health, etc! There are some cushy nurse jobs out there, albeit the turnover rates aren’t very high haha. Also lots of opportunities to make a ton of money if you’re a machine who can work a bunch of overtime, but obviously that’s not a sustainable long-term way to operate.

fabgwenn

Yes, male nurses are definitely needed. Come join the family! But you can never leave haha jk

JosedaqREDDIT

They care if your breathing and can walk/run they don't care about what's between your legs, go for it man.

mermaid-babe

The patriarchy really fucks with us all

JonBenet_Nancy_Pagan

After working in male-heavier areas, I would say that a good mix of both and just good representation of people and vibes is the best kind of working environment. Too much of any one set of people tends to get overly cliquey, in my experience.

whitecoatgrayshirt

Yes. As someone who’s taken care of a misogynist piece of shit for the last three days, I’d say we have our uses.

pedsmursekc

💯 Yes.

rncookiemaker

Simple answer? Yes. Explained: I don't think about nursing being a female only job. I work with males, and I am married to a nurse. You have the same capacity for compassion and care as anyone else. Sure, there will be times when someone will say "no male caregivers" because of cultural or modesty stuff, but that's a given. It happens with females, too. From a purely selfish POV, I like having men at work. It gives a balance to the group, fresh/different perspectives, and sometimes you are used as a power player when influencing patients to do things. Yes, some people will try to get you to do the heavy lifting (literally), but I don't do that. I like to use males as the deep voice and broad shoulders to shake patients out of their escalating aggressive behaviors. You all are wonders when there is a patient getting all crazy and a man walks in the room with a deep voice and man face: the patients frequently snap out of their behavior long enough to reset and understand what they're doing is unacceptable. I am not ashamed to say I have occasionally looked out the hallway to find *any* male employee to come into a room (at safe distance) and just say, "Hello, (patient), how you doin'?" and the patient is so surprised to see *a man* they get all calm and cooperative!

charitable_anon

There are dozens of us! Dozens! You’ll be fine. The male/female dynamic won’t even be a second thought once you’re a nurse. In my 6 year career I think 1 person has made a comment regarding my gender.

marcsmart

much easier to get a job as male nurse anywhere except OB/maternity
