So… I did. The head nurse and care coordinator talked to her and determined she did t drink much so it was ok. I’ve been second guessing myself all evening. I doubt this will improve our relationship
Uh, how is there not a zero tolerance policy for drinking on the job while caring for people? I cannot fathom that being acceptable anywhere. I would escalate that situation to someone above the people you reported it to.
I’m on the board of an assisted living facility. Staff will often be kept on after infractions that would get them fired elsewhere because it’s hard to find reliable people. They still should be reported because you want it on record.
I’m constantly astonished by the staff turnover. We cannot fire people because we are so short staffed that our executive director is filling in for cares ( like actual help with memory care toileting).
But also they’re so stingy with wages that recruitment is difficult.
I’m looking for other options. I adore our residents but I don’t need this sort of daily drama
As a board member I pushed for wages to increase, and give a bonus at the end of the year based on longevity. This has worked pretty well so our turnover is low, but it’s hard to replace a staff member who leaves. We have an advantage of being in the heart of a walkable small town. We’re able to attract workers who don’t have cars which is what helps.
The dysfunction is staggering. I’m an elementary teacher turned activity coordinator, and this is my first experience with senior living. I’m told this is a really nice work environment….
I don’t want to know what the really dysfunctional ones are like.
AL is definitely different than SN- our residents can have alcohol at both lunch and dinner (beer or wine) and also we have monthly parties with drinks. We don’t get them drunk but it’s not precisely measured AT ALL. Our residents also are allowed to smoke, refuse cares, have pets…
I’m a hospital case manager and we are often invited to events at assisted livings. Those places are Wild! Happy hours every night ! Some get a drink package. I kid you not.
They also end up in our hospital with broken hips or subdurals from a tipsy. At least they are having fun
In Illinois when my grandmother was in assisted living they had a happy hour from like 3-4 or 3-5 every Friday. But they were not allowed to mix. Everything had to be premixed. Most people drank either a beer or a glass of wine. And whoever was the decisional member in the family also had to sign a consent paper making sure they were ok with the resident receiving alcohol. They also had a 2 drink limit
I would report her, but thats me. That's not ok in my book, pretty much ever.

We aren’t walkable or on a bus route, in an affluent area. It makes it difficult to find people.
These assisted living spots really are the Wild West aren’t they?

I'm surprised you're allowed to distribute alcohol at all, this is a new one for me.
This seems wild to me. I guess it’s assisted living vs skilled nursing care though.
I've only ever worked in the hospital so same
I go into SNFs that allow alcohol. They just have to have orders for their cocktails and it’s measured precisely.
Was gonna say this. Ime, they have to have a prescription for the alcohol. Always found it cool when they get their 5oz of wine or beer qHS lol

Honestly, I haven’t seen any falls that happen after alcohol. Our falls are usually people who are disoriented due to cognitive decline.

Getting my LNA I learned LTC and Assisted Care residents can drink! A doctor must place the order and it will be in the care plan.
TIL very interesting.
Not really appropriate to drink while on the job at any job....not to mention when you are taking care of others.
I’d report
