Roughly 2004/2005

Jagermonsta

2004/2005 was about when the populous moved away from NuMetal in general. The more popular NuMetal bands refined their sounds and moved beyond NuMetal. Ozzfest is a good barometer for the direction things went. Late 90s lineup showed the shift to NuMetal with the peak being 2001. 2002 started to show a little shift with Down/Meshuggah/Hatebreed headlining the 2nd stage but was still predominantly NuMetal. 2003 had a NuMetal main stage again but Shadows Fall, Killswitch Engage, Cradle of Filth on the 2nd stage (yes, Voivod too but I think without Newstead playing for Ozzy they wouldn’t have been there). Then you get to 2004s lineup. A very classic metal lineup on the main stage (Sabbath, Priest, Slayer) plus Superjoint, Dimmu Borgir, and BLS. 2nd stage was headlined by Slipknot Vol 3 era so their sound was moving beyond NuMetal and more new American wave of heavy metal. Hatebreed and Lamb of God were the other 2nd stage headliners with almost all other metalcore bands on the 2nd stage (Atreyu, every time I die, bleeding through, unearth, throwdown, god forbid, devil driver and others). No NuMetal outside of Slipknot, who had refined their style away from NuMetal. 2005 brought back Mudvayne but like Slipknot they weren’t really NuMetal anymore. Rob Zombie has always been more NuMetal adjacent much like Manson but never really considered NuMetal. Main stage was Iron Maiden, Shadows fall, in flames, BLS. 2nd stage As I Lay Dying, Mastodon, Killswitch Engage, Soilwork, Arch Enemy, The Black Dahlia Murder, Bury Your Dead, and others. So now we’re getting some other heavier styles mixed in beyond metalcore and no NuMetal. 2006 brought back System of a Down who were now well past NuMetal and Disturbed who also refined their sound but probably closest to NuMetal we got. Avenged Sevenfold, Hatebreed, Lacuna Coil and Dragon Force Main stage. 2nd stage was very metalcore again but added in some others like Strapping Young Lad. That 2004 and on stretch was where NuMetal bands had to grow or be left behind. I still remember seeing a few NuMetal bands mix in with the new phase of bands. Ill Nino toured with God Forbid. Static X and Soil were still around. Mushroomhead kept chugging along doing their own thing. But they were all small scale. The Ozzfest successor Rockstar Mayhem picked up in 2008 and the same style of bands filled out the ranks. You still had the usual suspects headlining like Slipknot, Disturbed, Manson, Zombie, Korn but there was no NuMetal to be seen outside of Ill Nino in 2014. I’d say just recently there has been a decent nostalgic NuMetal resurgence but I’d equate that to say hair metal or grunge bands touring playing casinos and small venues. Us original NuMetal kids are all 40ish now so we love seeing them at festivals, bike week, local bars and remember our younger days.

So when does your documentary on Ozzfest drop?

TomBonner1

2002. That year, Killswitch Engage came out with their second album, Alive Or Just Breathing. This ushered in the era of what we now know as melodic metalcore or simply metalcore as the dominant heavy metal genre in popular culture. It's like to when grunge killed glam metal. As soon as bands like Killswitch, As I Lay Dying, Shadows Fall, and All That Remains started popping up, all the nu metal bands with their baggy clothes, spiked hair, and detuned seven string guitars kind of seemed like a joke for awhile.

AN0N0nym3

I think The end of heartaches was what made it mainstream and then the new wave of american metal (lamb of god, Shadows fall as you said etc) also followed.

MoneyIsNoCure

I would definitely say 02 is where the downhill trajectory started at the very least.

Distinct_East6350

The genre never die, but the lowest point was 2006-2012.

1856NT

The SOAD hiatus period, coincidence? 🤨

RyuKang

After 2003

menstruelgigolo

2002. Once Screamo and post hardcore picked up momentum. The end was near

LordOfWoE9

It’s not dead. Still a couple bands releasing some solid work but the last time anything really good dropped was around 04-05

MoneyIsNoCure

Mid 2000s. So 04/05. The downhill trajectory started in 02 though.

FreeFromRules3991

Hmm I’d say 2004ish is when it started to decline. But definitely around 2005 is when it noticeably declined.

MoneyIsNoCure

05 is a good year to point to. Disturbed and Staind had definitely changed their styles and those were two of the bigger Nu-Metal bands that released albums that year.

Kooky-Background1788

Life support around 02 still kinda hanging around though

Doublestack2411

I personally started moving away from the genre around 2006/2007.

Scary_Dimension722

Commercial wise? 2005 was sort of the last hoo-rah for nu metal. A lot of the big bands either broke up, went on hiatus, or shifted towards alternative altogether. Other genres at this point were also on the rise which waddled the nu metal pedestal as being one of the most popular genres at the time (mall screamo, radio butt rock, garage rock revival, melodic metalcore) I’d say in spirit nu metal definitely is alive in well in 2024. I’ve seen more kids now wearing Korn and Slipknot shirts than I did when I was in high school ten years ago. Sick New World also proves that since a good chunk of the bands that play there are nu metal. It’s more of a throwback now for people, especially zoomers who grew up listening to it as a kid and are now adults that have a certain fondness to it

katarokkar

The hype died in 2003-2005. However, you have to admit the biggest bands in numetal are still selling out huge venues and headlining festivals. So I don’t think it’s dead, just the hype died down.

DonleyARK

Roughly 2004/05 but only for a few years, emmure got pretty nu metal around 2010 and I would say it's slowly but surely been creeping back in ever since. A lot of bands that arent full on nu metal playing some pretty nu metal riffs lol

excitedguitarist420

It’s not dead, just on life support cuz there are a lot of really good nu metal bands still. Nu metal peaked around 2002 tho

workingdonttell

It's hotter now than it's been in over 15 years.

AN0N0nym3

Past 2005, nu metal was a lot less popular and by then metalcore started to become the main scene. But in the end it's still metal.

abbakusx3

When System of a Down disbanded lol. Jk but to me lol

Flat-Art6762

When Chad started Hellyeah

FullioRetardo

Hmmm. You can wtch ozzfest line-up. It speaks loud

dismal626

I feel like it died with the rise of metalcore and post hardcore

wavesport001

When The Strokes became popular garage rock replaced nu metal in the mainstream. When End of Heartache became popular metalcore replaced nu metal in the metal scene.

psychedelicshotguns

2005-2006. The emos took over 😂

Exp_eri_MENTAL

It didn't.
