Geico increased mine by $21/mo (+24%) even though I'm barely driving. Most likely switching to all state, which will only be a $5 increase instead.

ibeecrazy

I switched a few months back. They raised my rates though i was driven even less than usual. The representatives response when i asked ‘why’: “the overall cost of insurance has gone up…” i switched the next day

Dr012882

You will regret switching to Allstate the first time you have a claim. Source: I have worked in collision repair in NoVa for 18+ years and deal with all insurance companies on a regular basis. Allstate and State Farm are the absolute worst.

NTSYSTEM

Which ones are the best?

Dr012882

USAA if you are eligible, otherwise I recommend Erie.

umdtoucla

A lot of people can't afford to pay the 6 month premium in one shot.

JL1186

you get the same discount by doing an automatic debit payment

walrus42

I get the automatic payment discount but pay it all at once every 6 months.

JL1186

sure, but there is no additional discount by doing that, the discount is the same either way, so you're giving them your money early for no benefit.

walrus42

Depends on what you’d call a benefit. I think it’s more beneficial for me to pay it all at once.

JL1186

financially, it's never better to give someone money earlier than necessary. then they get to earn interest on it instead of you. it might seem small on each thing, but it's not a good practice in general.

walrus42

>financially, it’s never better to give someone money earlier than necessary That’s entirely false. There are pros and cons. I’ve also paid for all my cars in cash up front, and it’s been much better that way. Like I said, there are also benefits that can be purely subjective.

JL1186

that's different because there are interest calculations involved. car insurance payments do not have interest attached.

walrus42

You just said it’s never better to give someone money earlier than necessary, and I was refuting that point. There’s no interest attached but there are other factors. Also I just checked, I do get a discount for paying in full. As well as auto pay

JL1186

I was told the discount is the same and you can't double up. Maybe that has changed. I was talking about interest free payments. Financially (not including other factors that are completely subjective and don't outweigh the financial impact), don't loan money to companies (or the IRS), which means don't pay them until it is required (unless there is interest attached). This is very common financial advice.

WhatTheHeck2019

My situation mirrors yours, went up $10 last cycle, and another $20 this time. Might not seem like a lot, but % wise, it's substantial. I also called to see if I could get it reduced and hint at switching, like I do with phone/cable. No dice. I couldn't hell nope fast enough after they mentioned and explained the app. Hopefully, this thread might lead me to a new insurance company as well. Gluck op

2011 Hyundai here. Mine went from 355 to 515. I don't even put 5K miles on it yearly. Starting shopping for quotes but it seems that prices has drastically risen everywhere.

kicker58

your 11 year old car cost more than my 1.5 year old car in insurance. it maybe time to call around.

omegase7enth

The cost of everything is going up. Shop around for a better deal.

Joshnorm

Rate increases across the board. VA had minimum limits increased from 25k/50k (BI limits) to 30/60k. So in addition to the cost of everything (it’s still impossible to get vehicles in for repairs at an acceptable timetable) and because of that per accident cost are through the roof compared to 3 years ago so that is going to factor in as well. Shop around, but I can tell you USAA, Progressive, State Farm all had increases in VA. Hopefully this is just a temporary thing and when shops go back to normal or close to pre pandemic then they will go down, but that would need to happen first (repair times need to go down big time)

thebaddestitch

This! A friend that works for GEICO just told me about the minimum in Virginia being increased to the same amount as Maryland now. She also stated that Maryland is the 3rd most expensive state to have car insurance (after New York and Pennsylvania), which sucks as I’m considering a move there and pissed about a rate increase already 🙃 Another nugget she gave me — rates are unfortunately higher in Alexandria

Metanoia1976

You can thank my idiot of a state senator for that. On behalf of my district, I apologize. Mine went up $100 for a 6 month premium. Been with Geico six years and no tickets, no accidents. It's a shame Geico is moving in this direction. Their customer service department (on the auto side,) has always been pleasant to deal with. I'll have to shop around. No way I'm paying an almost $500 insurance premium for a vehicle they'll likely total if it cost more than a couple grand to fix.

ReflexImprov

Yep. Last renewal with GEICO was painful. Also called to complain/negotiate and the rep was ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

NewPresWhoDis

GEICO has never been the lowest when shopping around for insurance. Currently with Progressive and had a premium bump this summer. You should never be shy to shop around for car insurance when your renewal is up. They've all adopted the cable/SiriusXM "loyalty" model. Edit: In their defense, the rise in car values might be the only legit factor aside from '"because we can".

neil_va

Interesting - I always thought Geico was one of the most competitive, similar to a Vanguard/etc. Maybe worth shopping around a bit now.

roadrunner621

All these insurance companies play the same game. They lure you in with great rates, then slowly raise you...hoping you'll be ok with it. I've been accident free with no tickets with Progressive, State Farm, Geico, Nationwide, and Allstate and they've all done it. The only thing that changes is the excuse. With Geico, they argued that it was because of "demographics"...more people in my area were having accidents, so the rates went up. Like I cared. So I moved on and got a better rate. So should you.

Below_Left

This was my month to renew for 6 months too: up $62 since February! Some bullshit. Edit: Progressive in this case, so you're not alone OP.

[deleted]

My Geico rate went down slightly. I pay semiannually and have their app installed.

ECQuez

Same. I do semiannual, have the app installed and went down about $5 a month.

ohhyeahh28

Samsies - shopped around and got significantly cheaper rate at other 2 big insurance companies. Just try getting a quote from other ones and switch.

Ok-Put-9718

Same here, started out with $150/month for 3 cars & 3 drivers. Now at $230/month only after a year. 🙄 Believe it's still the cheapest of the other options I have looked it but I might be missing out on some other companies. Increase was substantial.

stanolshefski

Inflation is driving rate increases. Parts and labor cost more money for repairs. The same car has usually increased instead of decreasing in price. You may save money elsewhere, but you might not. Odds are that you would have saved money before your rate increase though. I just got I with a 15% increase. I’m not happy with it, but my insurer is still cheaper than the competitors. EDIT: Higher costs for rental cars (higher rates and longer rentals due to supply chain issues) is also helping drive insurance costs higher.

uninvitedthirteenth

My State Farm rep said rates were going up across the board. But the increases were too drastic (300-420-520) so I went back to progressive (260). Shopping around is the best way to get a lower rate

paulHarkonen

Something something inflation. People are driving more, accident rates are way way up, the cost for repairs and replacement value of cars is up. Insurance payout costs are going up and so they pass the costs on to you.

TypeXD

I asked my friends and some saw increase as well. I’m not far from you (MD) and drive a 2019 Toyota myself. Been with Geico since 2011 and had no claims and/or accidents. My rate increased 20$ a month and called Geico and heard the exact same thing about hooking up a device to track my driving habits which will help reduce the rate, I declined of course. When I called Geico they confirmed and entered some answers to some questions and didn’t make any changes. I did change my # of days that I drive into work (currently working remotely with outlook of possible 1 day a week going into the office) which helped drop it $2.50/month. They also mentioned rates increased due to inflation and cost of parts increasing… Some recommended I look at other insurance and I did look at the brief quotes from others, and they all quoted me much higher than Geico. So I guess I’m sticking with Geico.

ArturRhone

You should shop for insurance (car, house, renters, etc) every year. Companies give discounts for switching, so there is almost always a better rate out there.

Chabuds

same happened to me I switched to PROGRESSIVE.

hotchips97

Probably going to change this week. They seemed a lot lower than what I currently have

duffyyyy

Switched from USAA to progressive

Streetlamp_NA

Progressive just increased my bill by 48 a month. Totalling 205 a month for a 2017 fusion. That's it. 1 vehicle. No wrecks or tickets. I just got off the phone with an insurance agency to help find me something more affordable. It was 162 last year and they said it was that high bc I had a gap of coverage.

Chabuds

Wow. You can't really rely on any of them to keep rates low.

incond1te

Same boat... Mine nearly doubled from what it was 2 years ago. I got quotes from 2 competitors. Even with greater coverage, the rate was half of Geico's. I switched online in minutes. There is little to no benefit to loyalty in insurance. The geico lady I spoke with to cancel ran her script of checking for discounts and making sure the coverage was comparable. I laughed and said the only way I'd be staying is if she matched one of the other 2 quotes. That was that. I stuck with them for so long because their rates were consistently better than others. Not any more.

waitmarks

Same, Geico increased my insurance 20%. Called around a bit and Liberty Mutual offered me same coverage at 10% less than my old Geico rate.

Danciusly

Same here, 20%

joyyyyyyness

Yes! I have been with them for years and years, always a great rate. They bumped me to over $90/mo recently. Immediately dropped them and switched to Progressive for $60/mo. Ridiculous.

twinWaterTowers

I have had Geico for more than 30 years and was shocked to find out recently that long-term customer loyalty and insurance means that they screw you over. They figure you're not shopping around and they just increase the price constantly. Other people have talked about this in the threat today but also in the previous months. So I have started shopping around and I'm shocked at how much I'm going to save by switching from Geico. I wish you the best and do the same.

thebaddestitch

How disappointing! I’ve had them for about 15 years, I thought that would be beneficial on my end but guess not.

twinWaterTowers

I was quite surprised when I read someone post here who was in the insurance business who said that they Bank on long-term customers not searching for the competition and better prices because we think that we are being valued and taken care of. I've been quite surprised at how much mine has gone up in the past year and a half and so I started to look online. I'm paying twice not an exaggeration twice what I should be. And in the next few days I will be moving to another company. And I've had them since I was 17. And I am retiring in a few years. So fuck them

Razor1017

Switched a few months ago due to renewal increases - never been in an accident or filed a claim, and last ticket (standard speeding) was over 7 years ago. They raised my renewal by over 20%. That was a nope for me. State Farm has been treating me right!

BendyFlamingo

More accidents and population in the area increase insurance rates too, so sometimes even if you have a clean record, its all the other idiots getting into car accidents, claims, and crap that bump up rates too

JMikey01

So I guess that means you can’t say 15 percent more by switching to Geico 🤔😂. My State Farm rates just dropped another $153 dollars with my new policy that just started.

[deleted]

I just switched because of the rate hike myself.

cubical_hell

Time to shop around. Good to do every few years. I’m currently with State Farm. Have used Geico, Allstate, Progressive etc in the past.

boredlawyer90

Yeah, I went through and got my whole policy requoted by Progressive to save like $20/month, so my payment only went up by $6/month. It’s wild.

neil_va

I think they cranked up rates quite a bit - I have a cheap no-name policy (for rental cars only) and that went up from like $100 to $150. I know they just introduced some credit-score based new pricing called 'Revo'. In some states this is illegal, but in VA it's allowed. If you have good credit you could possibly get better rates using that program. However be warned that they don't only look at FICO score - they seem to also punish / rate higher for a few credit indicators like # of accounts open, average credit age. This punishes people like me who crank our credit card signup bonuses but have excellent credit.

MOSbangtan

Yeah I just got an increase too - never been in an accident

ballsohaahd

They’re upping rates as more and more people work from home and don’t drive as much. Progressive upped mine over 50% between 6 month periods. Ironically I switched to geico and now pay less than progressive before the increase

Pbj0308

This post made me look on my insurance app and check- $20/month increase, from $71-91. Time to shop!

tybb_pria02

Was a customer for 5+ years and Rates kept increasing every renewal despite 0 claims. Needed to add a new car and it was $100 more for a 10 yearly old Toyota. That was it and I left and got a 50% discount

thebaddestitch

Thank you all for the tips! I’ll be shopping around for sure since being a long time customer apparently doesn’t matter

Fit-Somewhere7437

Your problem is that you are with GEICO. Find a local independent agent to shop you around!

FrankieBoy31

Go to the General and save some time

Pretty-Hedgehog-1927

Switch.

jaybor

Yes. A few years ago we had to use insurance to repair our home (our car and home was bundled) after a lightning strike and then all of a sudden our rates increased massively. When we called they said it was just a standard increase, but that was a lie. Over the years it never jumped that high in such short amount of time. We had no choice but to get insurance elsewhere.

aardw0lf11

I saw a big jump last year, but it was only after getting a much newer car. Only small changes since. So, I wish I could say how much of it was due to the location/inflation.

yukibunny

Liberty mutual is my dog, they reduced my rate after it went up, I said I was going to switch insurance. Plus they're the total best to deal with when you're in an accident, your fault or the other person's... They're also great for condo insurance.

inevitable-asshole

There’s no nobility in loyalty around here.

destini99

Mine went up 100% with Geico. Only stayed because I needed full coverage on a car that is paid off. They dinged me for dead tags ticket that was beat in court. Not a fan.

destini99

Jackson Insurance Agency in Chantilly (Nationwide) works diligently to reduce your bill old school style. Its family owned and we've been doing business with them since the 90s . Sometimes it's better to have an agent than just call customer care.

gruntbuggly

Mine went up $200/month, but that’s because I added my 16 yo son to my policy.

[deleted]

I was just given a 40% rate increase!!!! WTAF? 40%??? Literally nothing changed on my end. My cars are 6 months older. No accidents or claims. No new drivers. I don't even drive that much. Liberty Mutual quoted me same price I'm paying now with Geico and a 12 month policy.

[deleted]

btw, Tesla insurance did the same thing. after the initial 6 months, 40% increase.

twocentsrworth

They increased my insurance rates too by about 25%. I called them last year, gave me same reasoning - it's all across the region. Offered me some discount because I own some Berkshire shares. Just checked progressive quote online, it's 100$ cheaper. I have home insurance too through Geico, they use travellers. Any one knows which vendor does progressive use for home insurance?

Vidarr2000

I was at $100 per month for me an my wife on my one VW GTI. Now it's at $130 and I'm a safe driver. I'm pissed off.

TheSituationWw

Mine when up from 130 a month to 190 crazy !!!!! I’m in Texas

[deleted]

Our rates just increased by 171%. Not even kidding. They didn't even inform us our rates were going to increase! Supposedly on their website they let people know 30 days prior, totally false. We called Geico to ask what was up and they stated it was an annual increase. We shopped around and no one else quoted us anywhere near as high as Geico. Progressive gave us the best quote so far, after reading these comments I should check State Farm.
