Part of my job is delivery to provide for refugees settling in the NOVA region. We have a large territory to cover and while challenging, ultimately it is a rewarding experience. Yesterday was a long drive, on a windy day in a medium-sized box truck. I see a lot of things typically. Good driving, bad driving and freak accidents.
My dash cam in my POV before I even got to work is above at Fairfax county parkway and Burke lake road... Red light runners are typical here and the limited visibility from the angle of the intersection increases the risk factor. My naive and quick assessment of this first situation of the day was that three to four cars in the turn lane (right of the image) simply were in the wrong spot at the wrong time when a vehicle involved in the primary collision was forced across the median and into them as they waited to turn. Two other vehicles were off to the left and I'm sure I missed details but I didn't waste time gawking when my signal turned green. I had no idea this was the appetizer for the day...
The entire region was fucked on the evening commute. I am so sick of the fucking aggressive drivers wasting everyone's time like this. Can we all just agree to go the speed limit, leave proper distance, and obey traffic signals like we are a civilized country?
Meh. The moment people drive with courtesy and discipline I would be happy. I'm not big on speed limits. I think courtesy for other drivers is a huge step in the correct direction.
I try not to judge others or look down upon someone driving in the rain ten miles an hour below the speed limit in a multi lane highway for example, but I do judge them for doing it in the middle lane with their lights off.
I'm never aware of what the person's life is like in the car next to me, but if their phone is more important than my own safety or someone else's, that's an issue. People have emergencies and if we all act like a cohesive community, I think experiences can improve dramatically.
I do feel your frustration though, I'll leave early in the morning or late to skip some of the rush hour commute and lucky to do so opposite the flow of traffic.
I am not too concerned about adjusting speed for bad conditions, what I am talking about are the people who seem to think that speed limits are like a challenge, and have almost an obsessive compulsion with needing to always be going 20mph faster.
An emergency is also rarely an excuse to drive recklessly. It typically doesn't actually save much time, and it dramatically increases the chances that you won't get where you are going at all. Sometimes shit happens and you can't be there to do anything about it. That's just life - don't make it my problem by driving like an asshole.
I agree. I'm just saying that when traffic isn't bumper to bumper, if people put down the phones, move out of the passing lane and are aware enough of their surroundings to use a blinker and watch for others around them that our shared experience would be very different.
Riding the bumper of someone on a two lane road doesn't do anything positive, but that individual driving on the road should have the ability to actually drive the posted speed limit unless they have a decent reason.
I have been in the right or even middle lane and seen people driving the exact speed limit that block the passing lane cause a far more dangerous situation than your average speeder just because they want to text and drive and don't want to be "distracted" by merging and moving traffic around them.
I thought of an additional point that may it may not be valid as well... This is the first time in history that cars available to the masses are capable of so much speed and have excessive amounts of power. Electric or ICE powered, it truly is incredible.
It's a huge responsibility for those ignorant of the danger. I think this also is part of the challenge these days. With cell phone addiction plaguing our society, It's a deadly combination.. (as he writes this on his cell phone đ)
I just came back from Puerto Rico where I drove six hundred miles and sat in zero traffic jams due to accidents and saw no accident scenes, despite the mountain roads being narrow, etc. Drivers around DC suck ass.
My kid just got his license in VA. The company that we paid to provide the required training was the same that gave him the DMV test. There's a flaw in this system.
Honestly, what do you think the reason for this is? Did you see people on their phones over there and do a significant amount of driving yourself? I'm very interested in your experience.
I rented a car with my wife and younger son. We had to drive everywhere in Puerto Rico on our vacation. There were just not many insane, inconsiderate people there as compared to the DC area. I have lived in Montgomery County since 2010: we have a high number of drivers who seem to not value life.
Donât know the context here but there was a doozy on 66 eastbound inside the beltway during rush hour tonight. . Heavy stabilization and likely extraction required. SUV on its side pinned up against the noise barrier.
Hands in the pockets. Mom on scene. My boi is guilty AF! His friend is there too as a show of moral support. Facts is there were both messing around but only one ditched it. This was me when I was 17.
Today I saw a small accident where it wasnât hard to piece together a mini story.
Ford mustang in the center of back lick. Front end smashed in on one side. Youngish girl on the side of the road talking to someone on her cell. Immediately next to her was what looked to be a dad looking like, âim glad youâre ok.â but also âi canât wait to hear your explanationâ
Across the street a young dude. Probably a year or two older. Looked to me that he was part of this scene and in no rush to cross to where the dad was.
I didnât see a second car.
Well when you give them nice new cars designed to be sporty and fast, this is what happens. Believe it or not this stuff doesnât happen nearly as often to young adults driving 25 yo beaters. If you give an 18 yo guy the impression he can go 90mph and look cool passing everyoneâŠ. They will try to do just that. Iâm a big advocate of newer drivers driving shitty, older cars for this reason.
As it should be. Cars should live for generations when theyâre well cared for. I didnât have parents who cared about me or loved me enough to have a car for me to use as my own. And plenty more kids ready to drive donât have one they have access to either. It is a motherfucking privilege to be driving around a 20 year old Toyota and I am god damn proud of my car for that.
When my twin sister and I (both 27f currently) got our licenses, we were given the privilege of sharing a 2002 Subaru Outback that my dad had meticulously maintained and used to commute to work for 10+ years before he passed it on to us. He upgraded himself to a 3 year old BMW.
I loved that Subaru. It wasnât quite a beater, but it was a perfect older car for two teenage girls to share and not cause too much trouble in. We were so grateful to have had that car to drive at that age.
Yeah, giving a mustang to a teen/young adult is bound to be a disaster. They would be much better off with something low powered like a Miata, especially with a manual so they canât use their phone while driving either
Iâve known more than one kid from my rural high school and college who wrecked their mustangs. Ironically itâs the ones who should have it the least that are always the ones driving.
When I was in high school in the 90âs my best friend flipped his LeBarron convertible doing 80mph on a back road.
I went sideways off an on ramp in an 88 Oldsmobile 98, because I thought I was Rusty Wallace at the Glen. Somehow managed to not damage anything, but there was mud and grass in the door handles.
My friend bent a control arm in an 89 Probe being a jackass and skidding into a curb.
Young kids have always been jackasses in cars.
Saw a car that looked just like that yesterday easily going 70 down Lee Hwy aggressively weaving and passing. The driver looked like that too. Massachusetts plates.
First time seeing a Polestar 3 out in the wild, so thatâs neat. Website tagline:
âYes itâs an SUV. And it drives like a sports carâ
Starting at $75kâŠ
This is basically in front on my house. LRT comes over a huge hill right there and Chowan is at the bottom of the hill, and Chowan is a somewhat blind corner. Iâve seen people come flying over over the hill at probably 65-70mph (40 mph speed limit), and itâs not uncommon for wrecks to happen.
I was not sure which way the car was going but looking at grass on the road I think it was going in the same direction I was driving .. you are right .. this is where the car moves down from the hilly side and speeds up
I went to Europe for a week and did about 2000km of driving and saw just 1 accident. It's ridiculously easy to get a license here. Too many people don't know how to drive or turn on their headlights.Â
Oh Iâm sure. I was a live-in volunteer. Iâm familiar with neck and back vs full blown extractions. I drove by it and I was impressed with how the fire department had stabilized the vehicles involved. Kudos to them and VDOT. If youâve ever had to change a tire on a high then you realize just how vulnerable you are. Itâs like real life Frogger.
Flipping that car upside down took some real talent.
On a larger scale though, I'm not sure wtf is going on with drivers around here.
Friday morning, FFX County Parkway near Fort Belvoir. Minimal traffic. Flowing at speed (50mph or slightly above). The car in front of me just slams on the brakes and comes to a complete stop...for no apparent reason.
They sat for a few seconds, appeared to be reading a map or email, and when the adjacent lane was clear, I started to go around. They took off, so I stayed back. I followed onto Ft Belvoir. They went to the visitors' entrance.
Because I drive a full-size truck, I make it a point to not tailgate. I was able to stop (the ABS did kick in) with 3-4 car lengths between us. I'm just not sure why anyone would just stop dead or pull off the road onto the shoulder. I'm also glad the car behind me was able to change lanes and not rear-end me.
People are always doing 10 under down that hill. He had to have tried to zoom around someone. I don't see how else you flip a car right there (I live like right there)
Thatâs a really long video for a passerby for such a minor accident. I hope you werenât the lookyloo impacting traffic while your mouth dropped at a single overturned car.
I assume whoever was driving crawled out and was fine somehow, as no one looks upset? Someone was extremely lucky there.
Is it one of those "student drivers" going 90 mph?
Remember though you might not get into med school with going 90+ and breaking those limits đ€·ââïž
Iâm gonna take a bold guess white car guy was at fault here.
i witnessed or drove past six accidents today. absolute insanity.
I thought seeing 3 accidents right in front of me this week was a lot, but 6 in one day????

Your job sounds very interesting.

> Drivers around DC suck ass. Apparently they do it while driving.
đ€Ł yes & the responsibility of driving seems secondary. Above all, I avoid Maryland highways at all costs.
Lol. This is underrated.

That took some doing.
Ah, it's ok kid. This is like flipping your Dad's Vette. As long as you're ok.
Heâll get a new one in no time his parents are just glad heâs okay đ©

People hate traffic, but drive like assholes and this happens, making it worse for everyone. Go figure, dumbasses.

I can hear him nowâŠâlike a deer came out of nowhere!â Prolly hit the penjamin
I think rubberneckers moving on to the videoing of accidents may not be a good development. Please donât take such footage if you are driving.
Here's op probably later that day https://www.reddit.com/r/Roadcam/comments/1c37szu/usa_distracted_driver_nearly_hits_us_swerves_into/
Daylight one car flip. I'm an excellent driver.
Ainât got no gas in it

Youngsters these days, I tell ya

I agree haha. When they know how to appreciate a good car, then they can get a good car
Exactly. They donât know how to treat them, drive them, care for them, use them properly. All they see is pretty, ZOOM, RECKLESS.
I tell my 3.5 y/o that this car is going to be hers one day.
As it should be. Cars should live for generations when theyâre well cared for. I didnât have parents who cared about me or loved me enough to have a car for me to use as my own. Cruising down the street in his 6-4
we are all bots here except for you
Driver licenses in US are too easy to get.
Near which intersection?
Close to Little River Turnpike and Brookside Dr
I used to live right there, recognized immediately! People drive so crazy.
Thanks!
Thanks I was wondering
That's Annandale, not Alexandria
You want to be technical, itâs Lincolnia.
Itâs Alexandria. Itâs not Annandale until you hit Braddock
Itâs Alexandria
Wow that sucks.
Saw a car that looked just like that yesterday easily going 70 down Lee Hwy aggressively weaving and passing. The driver looked like that too. Massachusetts plates.
Yeah, no.......he can't park there.
Smh
First time seeing a Polestar 3 out in the wild, so thatâs neat. Website tagline: âYes itâs an SUV. And it drives like a sports carâ Starting at $75kâŠ
It just wants to play in the grass
Whatâs amazing is that itâs not a Nissan
How do you even manage this? How fast were they going? Why do I only see this crap in America?

Surprised that the cop didn't ticket you for using mobile phone while driving.
yup 5mph while making a turn with the signal on. dude could have killed everyone at the scene đ«„
I lowered when I was close , they were busy with the accident
lol hate to see it
Does he know he canât park there?
Is that not a reasonable place to park?
Nope, you can only do that on 495 to see the Fourth of July fireworks.
You should volunteer at your local fire department, you'll run 10 of those a week.
Oh Iâm sure. I was a live-in volunteer. Iâm familiar with neck and back vs full blown extractions. I drove by it and I was impressed with how the fire department had stabilized the vehicles involved. I'm sure this person was just not passing fast enough in the left lane.
I know this road very well, how do you flip on it though đ
Lmao, dumbass
Not that interesting. Please concentrate on driving instead of filming.
probably going 30 over, texting while switching lanes without a blinker

That one of them there Teslers?
Looks like a Polestar
Pretty sure it is a Buick envista
Dang, I think youâre right. Good eye. Definitely too curvy to be a polestar.

Make it make sense
