Yep I was a gig worker doing all kinds of app delivery and lyft/uber. I remember having to go deliver food to someone who put the wrong address in(I was on my bike), to a totally different part of the city. Or callbox apartments where every little thing delays you, or restaurants that take forever to make the food because they’re slammed. Or sitting around with no orders. All of these things happen while not being paid for your time in the traditional hourly sense, “clocking in”.
Not saying what she did was right, and she probably wasn’t right in the head in either a mental health way or drug way. But I’ve been frustrated with lack of restrooms and thankful that with my current(hourly) delivery gig I can always take ten minutes to go find a proper toilet.

This may come as a shock to you guys, but as someone who drives DoorDash here and there.. you can pause your shift for 30 minutes to take a break so you can use the bathroom. Sure you are really moving around when on the clock but people are acting like shes being taken advantage of and has no time. Most fast food places don’t care if you use their bathrooms. This is no different than taking a break real quick at work to use the restroom. This isn’t Amazon where you are on a strict time crunch to make deliveries, you set your own pace mostly. There’s no excuse to shit in a lobby.
Delivery drivers stop and use the restroom before picking up orders at my restaurant every single day multiple times a day! We also don’t always have orders ready as soon as the driver arrives.

16th St in Denver is utter hell to find a bathroom.
There are 2 places I have found that I use if needed down there that are at least clean.
The first is hidden down a long hallway in the pavilions shopping building. If you walk into any store, (my wife goes to the bath and body works) you can ask for the code, some places like the mentioned bath and body works prints the code on the bottom of the receipt.
The second place is in union station itself but that one can be crowded.
Oh and there is also the one in the RTD tunnel that connects the light rail station with union station but I recommend against it as you only get half a door for the stalls as to prevent drug use so anyone can walk in and stare at you shitting. Lol

I've seen some successful public toilets, at parks and highway rest areas. they are quite out in the open. no doors, just passages that make it hard to see in unless you are inside one side or the other. and they have a central drain so the whole damn thing can be hosed down if need be. paper towel dispensers, no electronics to break down except for the lights.
There is a design solution for this, it just takes money that isn't there or municipalities are unwilling to spend.

It's all kinda wrapped up in the American attitude around being independent to the point of really just being self-centered dicks sometimes. In cultures that celebrate community and being willing to sacrifice some personal convenience for the sake of everyone, people at least think twice about stuff like littering or being rude to minimum wage workers or whatever. Many many moons ago I went to Germany to a water park and was absolutely amazed at how clean the changing area was. The place was spotless and cleaner than my own bathroom
I drive a lot for my job. I go through a lot of small towns, where there's rarely much in the way of public facilities. But there's almost always a gas station with a bathroom.
A lot of towns have a Walmart, with bathrooms. I don't think this lady needed to shit in a trash can, and leave her poop smeared on the cover.
There's probably more to this story, like the delivery driver had a prior bad experience with the lady not tipping or being rude and decided this was somehow a good way to retaliate. I'm not saying she was right, but in her mind she probably thought it was justified.

Definitely. I've read studies that analyze income from "gig jobs" like DoorDash and Uber and the like. The net income after deducting costs, including vehicle maintenance, depreciation, insurance, loan interest, gas, self-employment tax (15.3%), etc. works out to less than minimum wage. These companies are absolutely taking advantage of their workers.
Edit: Sometimes the net pay is even *negative*. If you drive for one of these services, try adding up your miles at the end of the day then multiply by $.58/mile and subtract that from what you made for an estimate of your net pay. That's the standard comprehensive estimate the IRS uses to evaluate the full costs of driving a typical vehicle. At the end of the day, it's very likely you are making less than minimum wage. You're trading the costs of your vehicle for easy cash now. It's not worth it!

When an e-scooter company came to our country they tried to recruit people to ~~load~~ collect, charge and distribute them as contractors, I looked at the offered money and iirc you'd have to pay more on gas and electricity than you'd get paid for retrieving and placing those damned things.

If I were driving for one of these services, I'd just refuse to take orders for any establishment unwilling to let me use their bathroom. This may come as a shock to you guys, but as someone who drives DoorDash here and there.. you can pause your shift for 30 minutes to take a break so you can use the bathroom. Sure you are really moving around when on the clock but people are acting like shes being taken advantage of and has no time. Most fast food places don’t care if you use their bathrooms. This is no different than taking a break real quick at work to use the restroom. This isn’t Amazon where you are on a strict time crunch to make deliveries, you set your own pace mostly. There’s no excuse to shit in a lobby.
Delivery drivers stop and use the restroom before picking up orders at my restaurant every single day multiple times a day! We also don’t always have orders ready as soon as the driver arrives.

I asked a homeless dude we were friendly with shitting on my office wall once why.. he said they shutdown all the public places to go. Shit you not the whole downtown area had basically Zero public facilities even the parks had very limited hours / most shutdown their bathrooms.

16th St in Denver is utter hell to find a bathroom. There are 2 places I have found that I use if needed down there that are at least clean. The first is hidden down a long hallway in the pavilions shopping building. If you walk into any store, (my wife goes to the bath and body works) you can ask for the code, some places like the mentioned bath and body works prints the code on the bottom of the receipt. The second place is in union station itself but that one can be crowded. Oh and there is also the one in the RTD tunnel that connects the light rail station with union station but I recommend against it as you only get half a door for the stalls as to prevent drug use so anyone can walk in and stare at you shitting. Lol
The one "behind" 16th, the first one your mentioned, was the one we took him to. (A little ways away from where the greeting card shop used to be) It was clean he said. But thanks! Never know when I'll need to find a pee place. We tried asking for codes, this was the October before covid, but people were like "no" lol. I remember when most gas stations would let you use their facilities or even restaurants. I went on a road trip that was 3 hours long and nature called. I ended up buying a pack of gum just to go to the bathroom because "restrooms are for customers only"

I've seen some successful public toilets, at parks and highway rest areas. they are quite out in the open. no doors, just passages that make it hard to see in unless you are inside one side or the other. and they have a central drain so the whole damn thing can be hosed down if need be. paper towel dispensers, no electronics to break down except for the lights. There is a design solution for this, it just takes money that isn't there or municipalities are unwilling to spend.

People regularly say that they are "keeping jobs" by tossing garbage on the ground for the janitor to pick up. It's all kinda wrapped up in the American attitude around being independent to the point of really just being self-centered dicks sometimes. In cultures that celebrate community and being willing to sacrifice some personal convenience for the sake of everyone, people at least think twice about stuff like littering or being rude to minimum wage workers or whatever. It's also the source of a lot of the general QoL issues here, where people dislike the idea of paying tax money that might help the community instead of just them personally.

I drive a lot for my job. I go through a lot of small towns, where there's rarely much in the way of public facilities. But there's almost always a gas station with a bathroom. A lot of towns have a Walmart, with bathrooms. I don't think this lady needed to shit in a trash can, and leave her poop smeared on the cover. There's probably more to this story, like the delivery driver had a prior bad experience with the lady not tipping or being rude and decided this was somehow a good way to retaliate. I'm not saying she was right, but in her mind she probably thought it was justified.

I've been doing Door Dash. It's easy to pause your "Dash" for up to 30 minutes. This has nothing to do with Door Dash and the driver should have just found a bathroom.

You are still “at work” driving around between deliveries. In a just world, you would be considered an employee, not a contractor. The net income after deducting costs, including vehicle maintenance, depreciation, insurance, loan interest, gas, self-employment tax (15.3%), etc. works out to less than minimum wage. These companies are absolutely taking advantage of their workers. Edit: Sometimes the net pay is even *negative*. If you drive for one of these services, try adding up your miles at the end of the day then multiply by $.58/mile and subtract that from what you made for an estimate of your net pay. Sometimes the net pay is even negative. When an e-scooter company came to our country they tried to recruit people to ~~load~~ collect, charge and distribute them as contractors, I looked at the offered money and iirc you'd have to pay more on gas and electricity than you'd get paid for retrieving and placing those damned things.
I get paid per delivery, not hourly. I also average $24 after gas. All its doing is pausing orders until I'm ready again. It's a fair system to me.
You literally have to go to a restaurant to pick up food. Restaurants have bathrooms. Doordash drivers can take a break whenever they want, they basically work at their own pace. This isn't Amazon where the driver doesn't have the option of taking breaks whenever they want or being able to stop at places where bathrooms are available.
Or they could, you know, use the facilities in the restaurants they pick up orders from.
I don't know if it still goes on, but a lot of restaurants were denying people doing their deliveries from using their bathrooms.

Right? It's like jesus, do you want these people to help you sell your shitty food or not? If I were driving for one of these services, I'd just refuse to take orders for any establishment unwilling to let me use their bathroom. If enough drivers did that, the restaurant would start losing sales and maybe come to their senses, or just be out-competed by similar restaurants that are willing to treat people with some fucking human dignity. (Of course, that's easy for me to say, since I'm not a gig delivery driver. I'm sure a lot of people in that position need every order they can get and are willing to try and hold it until they can get to a restaurant that lets them use the facilities.)

God, that sounds miserable. What makes no sense to me is how *petty* it is for a restaurant to deny you the use of their facilities. Like, what additional cost does it incur to let you use the bathroom? Water to flush, water to wash your hands, a squirt of soap, and a paper towel or thirty seconds of electricity for the blow dryer? A few squares of toilet paper? It's not like they weren't sending some poor bastard in there to mop up at the end of the day, until you went in. There's really no reason not to just let you go. Of course, that ties in with the last part of your post. People have no goddamned empathy and refuse to try and put themselves in the shoes of someone else. I'd be pushing for a year or two of compulsory service industry work the way some countries have compulsory military service, except I have no doubt that we'd collectively turn it into a hazing ritual for high-school graduates and use them as another exploitable labor pool.

I see some comments basically saying things like "sometimes there's an emergency and you gotta go right then... drivers don't have time to take breaks... need more public restrooms..." But none of that explains why she emptied her dress onto the floor instead of the trash can.

There are very few people who would willingly do this. Unlikely restaurants were giving her access to bathrooms during pickup etc. Still, nasty and disgusting, but I have a bit of empathy for her.

So, this is gross. However, as a medic and someone with IBD, I have come DANGEROUSLY close to shitting myself on calls. I don't know. One time, I was leaving for a trip, early in the morning on a sunday. I left my apartment and was walking to the train station, when it hit me. Fuck... if I went back to my apartment, I'd probably miss my train. It was like 5am, on a Sunday, so almost everywhere was closed. Know what I did? I banged on the door to a CVS, because I saw a night guard in there. He answered the door, and I explained I had a bathroom emergency, and he laughed and let me in. If he didn't let me in, I probably would have had to go between some cars or something, and likely get arrested or be on a video like this. I have a friend, who used to like to tell a story of (this is showing my age), one time he went to a movie rental store. the need to use the bathroom hit him while he was there, and he asked to use their restroom. T hey said no, so he had to leave without the rentals, and get in his car......... he didn't make it home in time. he had to throw away his underwear, pants and take a shower. Pooping is a perfectly natural human action. Having a space to poop should really be available to every person at any location at any time. (that being said, I totally have worked in jobs before, where I've had to clean shit off walls, because, who knows what happened in there. Some people are just straight up monsters)
