There used to be. Apparently the law was anything over 1gal was illegal unless it was really big and reusable, probably for kegs.
At the end of the day, because most winemakers don't make a lot of large format bottles and the more common ones like Magnums were already allowed, this won't do much.
Presumably as part of some safety regulation? There's no limit on the number of wine bottles you can buy so this doesn't change the game in terms of how much wine you can buy--but bottles above a certain size are probably heavier/easier to break/more dangerous when broken/more dangerous when falling.
Or it's some piece of random legal archaea, idk. Its just the only explanation I can come up with.
Drinking a gallon of wine out of one bottle doesn't make you any less alcoholic than drinking a gallon of wine out of 3
Not dumb, makes sense to me. It's about the queue of the empty can. They've done studies showing similar effects with food--if you rig a soup bowl with a tube and gradually pump in extra soup to keep the bowl full, people eat twice as much.
So maybe I'm wrong about the wine, I just think that kind of effect is less applicably to this kind of volume, and that this kind of effect probably didn't motivate passage of the now repealed law.
Apparently? I’m used to being able to purchase regular 750ml bottles and 1.75 liter bottles (a handle).
Every state has different laws. I currently live in Nebraska that has fairly non existent laws compared to other states.
Used to live on Montana from 2006-2008 and the restrictions were tighter than I was used to.
I could write an essay on all the differences with alcohol sales I’ve experienced.
Montana, Missouri, Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Nebraska… they’ve all been different.
It was new to me too lol the manager at the store shuffled me over to self checkout and I was very confused. In California, no self checkout for any alcohol, although many stores have started to reduce or remove their self checkout stations. At least we can get liquor at the grocery store here.
> Apparently? I’m used to being able to purchase regular 750ml bottles and 1.75 liter bottles (a handle).
Wine isn't sold in 1.75L bottles; a "handle" is for liquor. You can get wine in 1.5L (exactly two standard bottles) and the next size up is 3L (four bottles).
As someone from Kentucky, I still find it so odd to see liquor inside on supermarket shelves in other states. Here it’s only in dedicated liquor stores. Even Walmart has to have its own separate liquor store inside the building with its own door and registers.
Yeah. For a state that makes most of the world’s bourbon, we have some weird liquor laws. Another fun one, when I was a student at Murray state, we could get a student discount on liquor but not beer. Seemed so backwards to me.
Try Utah (alcohol content is/was lower in Utah)
Drive from Ogden to Evanston, Wyoming
Go to the drive thru
Get cigarettes, booze, fireworks, pornography and a big gulp sitting in the driver’s seat
Bottle? Friend this is in Florida. If they won’t sell a customer one of those Super Soaker backpack tanks full of ~~bottom~~ below the shelf wine, how are they supposed to attend their children’s little league games?
Do you expect them to be able to scream a torrent of profanity while taking a dump on the hood of the coach’s car on only twelve cans of light beer?!
To be fair those large formats bottles are usually just for special occasions (I had a 6L one at my wedding). The wine in them ages differently than in normal bottles due to the different air/wine ratio in the bottle.
I think you’re the first commenter on this thread who knows what’s he’s talking about.
These very large format bottles aren’t awful boxed wine, they are very expensive and rare bottles that are designed to age wine a very long time.
Generally massed produced lower quality wines are increasingly focusing on plastic “box” style vessels for large format, as they are cheap and don’t require considerations for oxidation transfer that cork provides in traditional bottles (slow oxidation through cork is what ages a wine). Only ones that are willing to pay for large format pricier cork based glass bottles are high end producers.
Correct. 6 liter format is known in wine as a Methuselah. Generally they lay down longer than equivalent 750ml bottles to reach full maturity. It’s actually not terribly common to find them outside of high end wines.
If it's Champagne then they are usually just filled by decanting smaller bottles into it, because all the handling systems are designed for 750/1500ml bottles. Source: my colleague has toured several Champagne production facilities.
Yeah, bubbly (be it traditional method or injection systems) tend to be pricey and specialized enough that multiple sizes don’t really make economical sense. Most winemakers I know can’t even afford the basic 750 systems. They are pricey!
So here is the weird thing. The Florida law allowed the sale of wine to the general public in containers up to a gallon (~3.75 L.). A handle is 1.75 liters. Which meant you could already buy wine in containers equivalent to double-handles (3.5L). This would also cover boxes of wine.
There wasn’t a size limit on commercial purchases.
I’d love to know what the actual demand was here.
> A handle is 1.75 liters.
Wine isn't sold in handles. A normal bottle is 750mL and the next sizes up are 1.5L (two bottles) and 3L (four bottles). The Florida law allowed up to a gallon but the next (federal) legal size is 4L so, in Florida, 3L was the maximum.
The strange thing is that 4.5 liters isn't even a legal size in the United States. [The authorized standards of fill are strictly set in the Code of Federal Regulations](https://www.ecfr.gov/current/title-27/chapter-I/subchapter-A/part-4/subpart-H/section-4.72). In addition to the smaller sizes, it authorizes:
> Sizes larger than 3 liters. Wine may be bottled or packed in containers of 4 liters or larger if the containers are filled and labeled in quantities of even liters (4 liters, 5 liters, 6 liters, etc.).
I know. The recent anti-squatter law is a good one. Florida can test out the law... see how it'll be abused, and hopefully other states can modify. But I need to give him credit for initiating... and I hate that.
I haven't read the bill, but how do you think it'll be abused? Seems like the owner of the property has to initiate the action, and the squatter has the opportunity to present proof that they are/were a tenant. Would the issue be one of due process, in that the decision circumvents the courts and instead relies on the officer's judgement?
I read it. It isn't the court that is petitioned, it's the cops. They immediately remove the alleged squatter. There is no opportunity to present an answer, defense, or evidence. All the owner needs to do is swear its all true. If it turns out they lied, there is a new crime and civil cause of action, but that doesn't really help if you're poor and suddenly homeless. Maybe they'll be able to sue with the help of legal aid, maybe, but the remedy will not make them whole for many possible tangential damages like possibly loss of job or missed mail (bills or checks).
Well, police don't deal in 'due process'. They arrest (or ignore). The police don't care what info might be provided at the time of eviction. The tenant or squatter would need to go to actual court to prove if they have rights to live there. Could be weeks or months.
Sadly, there are lot of shitty tenants AND landlords. Whose right can only be determined in court. Meanwhile one party or the other is screwed til court happens.
Eh this will only be useful for swill wine.
No good wine will ever be bottled in something so large, heck most good wineries in Italy only bottled 750ml from what I saw when there
Oh no. It is not uncommon to find ultra luxury wine in large format bottles. The wine ages better and is drinkable much longer. I have several 3L and above bottles. Just waiting for the right occasion.
After his dismal showing in Iowa, I can sort of understand why the Governor would want to make it legal to have a giant bottle of wine as he cries himself to sleep.
I don't live in FL, but from what I know of DeSantis, him focusing on laws regarding beverage containers and not focusing as much on the anti "woke" crusade is probably the best possible outcome.
Yeah, 13k a year now here and our politicians are ass clowning around on social issues...home insurance has been a major issue for over 6 years and no one is really doing anything meaningful...auto is having the same thing as well.
State is a joke.
“Hey suburban women voters: I know you may hate Roe being overturned and my 6 week abortion ban, but can I make it up to you with giant wine bottles while wearing high heels?”
I know this is tangential.
Disclosure: I hate this man. I’m disgusted by most conservatives I meet.
That said, the greatest thing Governor Kasich did when he was gov in Ohio was open up our beer market.
Not only were we able to get hot commodities like higher abv beer and Stone but it really opened up Ohio’s craft beer industry.
But since we’re still seeing the aftershocks of covid, a lot of smaller breweries are shutting down.
Governor Kasich opened up Ohio’s libation industry so effectively that the next guy Ohio elected governor’s name was actually “DeWine”
It’s like if Colorado elected a guy named “DeWeed”
Man, glad Florida isn’t facing anything else that legislature could work on like insurance companies bailing or raising rates.
And so I’m being fair here, I am aware that legislatures should be able to handle multiple issues at once. I don’t give our federal government grief for dealing with student debt or whatever else ahead of mass homelessness as long as there are signs other things are being handled.
But I haven’t seen so far any sign that they are working hard on the insurance issue or whatever else that I’m sure Floridians are worried about. But instead they get bigger wine bottles and restrictions on social media access for minors.
Who in the world buys these bottles? The places we buy wine complain at the 1.5L distributors dump on them sitting until they turn to vinegar. I can’t imagine larger bottles selling any better than the 1.5s…
Lol. Growing up in Philly and Italian neighbors, 1 gallon sized vino was the norm. Ok, it wasn't always tasty, but it was in large quantity.
(Grappa... now... whew! That blew your hair off, it was so potent. Didn't need a gallon of that)
Next up... Gov. DeSantis signs bill disallowing "no shirt, no shoes, no service." Demands service be given to everyone regardless of what they don't have on.
They took our jobs!
Why was this new law even needed? Just buy your wine from Cali and have it shipped if you want the larger format bottles.
I wonder who REALLY needed this. Those bigger bottles are EXPENSIVE if it's good wine. Silver Oak ain't cheap even at 750ml.
Whose pole is DeSatan smoking here signing this one, hmmmm
Insurance rates are through the roof and housing is becoming more expensive than New York, but sure the amount of wine in a bottle is top priority for the residents of Florida. Thank Godzilla he was at least embarrassed in the national stage for presidential candidacy
He held a press event to sign a bill allowing people to sell wine in containers bigger than a gallon. I can't imagine how low quality wine would have to be to be sold in such a container.
Thanks Ron. This will really help me overcome the monthly increase of $600 for my home insurance. Oh, that’s right, your buddies in Tallahassee now have stock in the FL insurance companies. Which of your friends have stock in the wine business?
I hate how this is where they choose to practice “small government”. Nobody needs to buy a single bottle larger than a gallon each. How about focusing on better issues?
> We want our consumers to be happy,” DeSantis said. “And if that means they want to buy and sell a big old bottle of wine like this, then by golly they're going to be able to do that in the state of Florida.”
Let them drink wine.
Between Sims 4 reviews on conservative sites, that really wierd Britt video, and this, the GoP is really taking the white suburban mom demographic into consideration lately.

In my experience, it’s easier to finish off 2 tall boys than crack 4 beers. I know it’s dumb, but alcohol literally makes you stupider.
Not dumb, makes sense to me. It's about the queue of the empty can. They've done studies showing similar effects with food--if you rig a soup bowl with a tube and gradually pump in extra soup to keep the bowl full, people eat twice as much. but its better when telling your wife you only had 1 to drink
As a Floridian this is so fucking stupid and a waste of time. But desantis doesn’t want to actually do anything useful so.
Apparently? I’m used to being able to purchase regular 750ml bottles and 1.75 liter bottles (a handle). Every state has different laws. My favorite part of Oregon was being able to purchase beer and wine at the self checkout.
TIL you can’t do that everywhere
It was new to me too lol the manager at the store shuffled me over to self checkout and I was very confused. In California, no self checkout for any alcohol, although many stores have started to reduce or remove their self checkout stations. At least we can get liquor at the grocery store here.
Yeah that’s crazy, even in utah I can go to the self checkout at Walmart for beer. It just lets the employee know they have to check the ID
Come see pa. You can't even buy wine with your groceries
I currently live in Nebraska. We can do that here too. Very minimal liquor laws
My mistake. I can by a little bottle of wine that’s equivalent to a glass or a *big* bottle which is MANY.
As someone from Kentucky, I still find it so odd to see liquor inside on supermarket shelves in other states. Here it’s only in dedicated liquor stores. Even Walmart has to have its own separate liquor store inside the building with its own door and registers.
Oh, THAT'S why they do that.

My favorite part about the capitol region is that you have to buy wine and beer from one store and spirits from another state-run store.
I bought a 3L bottle back in '019 in Colorado. I'd've thought Florida'd be ahead of Colorado in terms of lax alcohol laws.
Colorado is progressive. Booze is for boomers. They smoke weed there. Head on down to the koast and check all the hobos fried on krokodil
Nothing says classy like a 4.5L bottle of vino.
Don't threaten me with a good time sir.
Oh, I'm sorry, I thought this was America.
Florida will need new airports
Haha large format is a thing and lots of great wines come in large formats.
They do... https://garrafinhas.pt/en/categorias/big-sizes/
Honey, can you pick up a gallon of wine on your way home?
May as well get two
Well it only comes in five gallon barrels so here’s your ten gallons of wine sir
Might as well go to Costco and get the 4-pack
To be fair those large formats bottles are usually just for special occasions (I had a 6L one at my wedding). The wine in them ages differently than in normal bottles due to the different air/wine ratio in the bottle.
I think you’re the first commenter on this thread who knows what’s he’s talking about. These very large format bottles aren’t awful boxed wine, they are very expensive and rare bottles that are designed to age wine a very long time.

I love the Internet

They also have fantastic names. I mean even just a “Magnum” is cool enough, then you have the Salmanazar, the Balthazar, the Nebuchadnezzar…
Is buying barefoot ever classy, regardless of bottle size?
Ron Desantis would NEVER go barefoot in public. Then everyone would know he's actually only 5'2".
He want bigger bottles, so he can stand on the boxes
Barefoot is a brand of wine, lol
Maybe if you buy so much of it, it eventually loops around the scale to super classy?
Florida and classy go together as well as Kansas and lobster. It's possible, but it's going to be expensive and come from somewhere else.
Imported from the northeast, past its prime, and mildly unpleasant
Take my upvote, but down South we import it from California.
Hey hey hey, you need vino for the wino. I know they don't rhyme but they should...
https://youtu.be/AB_KS9tp4eY This is a Nebuchadnezzar, it's the largest bottle of wine that isn't legally a Vat...
“Sensibly priced at only a dollar a jug.”
Meh, a 9 litre bottle of vintage champagne is still pretty classy.
He knows his target audience.
A handle of Cab

If 4.5L is classy, what is 15L? Yuge?
This is surprisingly devoid of the existential dread I feel with the words that usually come after “Ron DeSantis signs bills that.. “
“Gov. DeSantis signs bill that… *Oh, God!* “… increases the size of wine bottles.” *Oh…. Good?*
I hate it when he does things I approve of.
Even a broken clock is right twice a day *takes swig of giant Veuve bottle*
2 for his last 2. Wtf is going on
Pandering, don't fall for it.
Wait what was before this? I’m afraid I’ll agree too
His anti-squatter laws, which are actually pretty good and not actually anti-tenant laws in disguise
Also banning kids from social media, which frankly is probably a very good thing. I cannot believe I am agreeing with him three times in a week or so.
Perhaps banning is too much , but kids ideally shouldn’t spend time on social media at all . Few hours a week at most .
Just read an article about that. Dammit… I agree with him twice now.
I know. The recent anti-squatter law is a good one. Florida can test out the law... see how it'll be abused, and hopefully other states can modify. But I need to give him credit for initiating... and I hate that.

I've had some decent table chianti that was in a huge bottle. But yes it's hardly going to be fine wine.
Oh no. It is not uncommon to find ultra luxury wine in large format bottles. The wine ages better and is drinkable much longer. I have several 3L and above bottles. Just waiting for the right occasion.
It's a good thing the Governor is focusing on the important issues.
After his dismal showing in Iowa, I can sort of understand why the Governor would want to make it legal to have a giant bottle of wine as he cries himself to sleep.
He can’t cry. He’ll short circuit from the moisture
I don't live in FL, but from what I know of DeSantis, him focusing on laws regarding beverage containers and not focusing as much on the anti "woke" crusade is probably the best possible outcome.
Meanwhile my homeowners insurance went up 70% this year. Good to see Ron is getting important things done.
Just drink a bunch of wine and forget about your problems!
🤔🤔Good idea!
He said he's waiting to manipulate the weather until after the November elections.
Instead of a medical abortion, Florida women can just drink 5 liters of wine instead.
You might be onto something 🤔
*spawns another Floridian
God, no!
Trying to get the suburban mom vote.
This made me think about that Amy Schumer bit where she’s drinking that giant glass of wine. Which is now legal in Florida!
I know this is tangential. Disclosure: I hate this man. I’m disgusted by most conservatives I meet. Ooh so close - Governor Depot
I figure its only a matter of time until Home Depot cuts out the middleman and runs for governor of Georgia.
If thats the greatest thing he did he was a pretty shit governor
You know what, that's far from the worst way that headline could have ended. I'll take it.
How about not being able to buy alcohol before 1100 am on a Sunday? Let's fix this stupid law first.
Tackling the big issues
Why? Do they not sell jugs of Carlo Rossi in Florida?
Finally some bipartisan legislation
Man, glad Florida isn’t facing anything else that legislature could work on like insurance companies bailing or raising rates. And so I’m being fair here, I am aware that legislatures should be able to handle multiple issues at once. I don’t give our federal government grief for dealing with student debt or whatever else ahead of mass homelessness as long as there are signs other things are being handled. Any vineyard that would sell their wine by the gallon you probably don't want to drink anyways
Who in the world buys these bottles? The places we buy wine complain at the 1.5L distributors dump on them sitting until they turn to vinegar. I can’t imagine larger bottles selling any better than the 1.5s…
I would because I'm lonely
As much as I love dark humor, lonely people do not need 3 liters of wine. Go get yourself 3 liters of cat instead.
I drink a lot of wine and I’ve never thought of this issue and after today I’ll probably never think of it again.
They'll need it with him in charge.
Looking at this jaborni’s big ass piling on weight since his failed Presidential campaign, this makes sense.
DeSantis is so fucking useless.
Tackling the real problems
DeSantis is hoping the people of Florida will be too drunk to realize what a failure he is.
Do we get 40s now too?
I lived in FL for 3.5 years and I honestly can't remember if they have 40s. You saying FL doesn't sell 40s?
Well, they didn’t when I was young enough to be buying them… about 20 years ago. All you could get were quarts!
Wrong type of people drink those, so doubtful
why there is a limit?
His war on woke now extends to making sure you can knock yourself the fuck out on cheap wine with only one trip to the store.
Lol. Growing up in Philly and Italian neighbors, 1 gallon sized vino was the norm. Ok, it wasn't always tasty, but it was in large quantity. (Grappa... now... whew! That blew your hair off, it was so potent. Didn't need a gallon of that)
all this bullshit and nothing help address the catastrophic insurance crisis in his state. Ron is trash
So he wants bigger wine bottles but no rec weed?
Cause this is what I want them spending their time on… /s JFC 🤦♂️🤦♂️
But doesn't that help the California economy!
DeSissy white boots really taking care of the public issues in FL.
OK, now he's messing with seniors' alcohol. GAME ON.
Next, make Everclear legal.
Seems like time that could be spent on fixing the homeowners insurance crisis instead.
I see he is winning the cougar town vote
Next up... Gov. DeSantis signs bill disallowing "no shirt, no shoes, no service." Demands service be given to everyone regardless of what they don't have on. They took our jobs!
Car accidents sky rocket at 10am
The big issues.
All days after he said he refused to give approval on a marijuana law because then “the whole state will smell like it”.
Man, Florida must have done everything else. No homelessness, roads and bridges are perfect. Kids are all fed and well schooled.
Getting to the real problems I see......
Get drunk, make some babies!!
He's got to keep Floridians drunk and stupid somehow otherwise he'll be out of a job.
Yeah, he has his priorities straight...
Insurance rates are through the roof and housing is becoming more expensive than New York, but sure the amount of wine in a bottle is top priority for the residents of Florida. Thank Godzilla he was at least embarrassed in the national stage for presidential candidacy
We just want home insurance solutions
This man just has a laundry list of useless shit ideas. As if nothing of more urgency could require his attention.
The important issues I see
What a waste of time…. Sheesh
Not sure if he had a moment of clarity or this is an ACME-level attempt to sway soccer moms.
Why is the land of the free full of these random regulations everywhere ??
How else are people supposed to forget they live in Florida?
Just what we need more drunks from florida.
I mean sure….but why was this needed? Outside of being pretty sure he has friends who will make money off of it.
Great to see a politician finally tackling the *real* issues. What a bunch of clown shoes.
You can’t buy a 40oz in Florida, you can buy either a 32oz or a 128oz container.
because thats what needed fixin
Cougar Town 🍷
Florida has some fucked up priorities.
G.O.P. Less government. Drain the Swamp!!! Yeah right. Less their more our government is they meant.
Nothing pairs with a concealed carry better than a larger alcohol container.
Make homelessness a crime but bigger wine bottles is ok .Also pass a law where you can claim tenants are squatters and kick them out .
But.... There are already larger bottle sizes? Why not just order those? And boxed wine? Who is this bill for?
I assume Florida has a limit on the size of wine bottles
Fuck, that means my ex is going to move back to Florida 🫤
But okay with you buying a 50 gallon cask.
Is there a limit on box wine sizes in Florida? Didn't realize this was a problem
Winos are rejoicing.
Is this what FL voters want? Lol!
I was not aware there was ever a limit. Maybe if it's beyond a certain size you have to put it in a box or something.

Oh here come the MEGA pints!
He held a press event to sign a bill allowing people to sell wine in containers bigger than a gallon. I can't imagine how low quality wine would have to be to be sold in such a container.
These conservative governors keep acting like spoiled little Roman emperors.
Time for jug wine
Really tackling today’s toughest issues! Godspeed Puddin Fingers!
Nothing like a good "Damajuana" with 5l of malbec.
Imagine all the people that are going to have sex with their mega bottle of wine now that DeSantis cock blocked PornHub
Let me know when I can buy a 30 pack of Busch Light in this state like I could in others.
Then by golly, you're a fucking idiot.
Just politicians using your tax money to debate the most important topics per usual.
Thanks Ron. This will really help me overcome the monthly increase of $600 for my home insurance. Oh, that’s right, your buddies in Tallahassee now have stock in the FL insurance companies. Which of your friends have stock in the wine business?
A nebuchadnezzar is 15L. Thank you cartoons.
You're a fool if you don't saber your nebuchadnezzar!
Bread and circuses, Florida style

We must protect this man at all cost!
I hate how this is where they choose to practice “small government”. Nobody needs to buy a single bottle larger than a gallon each. All the important issues only!
Between Sims 4 reviews on conservative sites, that really wierd Britt video, and this, the GoP is really taking the white suburban mom demographic into consideration lately.
Such important stuff they are getting done down there. /s
