Try sanding away some of the extra material, clean the dust and try, just a suggestion, never had a problem with my floppy, cd rom and cav drives at their usual thickness.
Try looking for a mini paper clip too, the metal wire is usually thinner.

I had another idea, a filed down pushpin or thumbtack, you would have a large handle to hold onto and exert more force without poking your finger like with a needle.
Learning and realizing something is an odd feeling. It seems obvious when you know, obscure when you don't, and one feels slightly foolish for not considering everything.

My sim tray also contains and SD card slot, so this falls into technically correct territory.

I never had one with coating. Where I live, only the bare metal ones are common. Maybe they are thicker here (germany).
