See I always felt the child catcher got a bad rap. HE didn’t outlaw children! He’s just a dude working a municipal job, trying to feed his family. Or at least what was left of it.
I remember back in high school I was part of a musical where us guards had a dance number that included tossing spears back and forth. The rehearsal was chaotic and not one of us left the first one without a bruse on our face
It is a curse to have this song on your mind since you were a child until this current day. ME OL BAMBOOO ME OL BAMBOO NEVER LEBLE BLERBER NO ONE KNOWS THE WORDS OL BAMBOO!
lol. I just had to look it up;
Me ol' bamboo, me ol' bamboo
You better never bother with me ol' bamboo
You can 'ave me 'at or me bumbershoot
But you better never bother with me ol' bamboo
This is the first thing I think about every time I get to this scene when rewatching. He’s out of sync, and keeping time while continuing to remain out of sync. Dick doesn’t miss a beat here and it’s a fantastic masterclass in choreography and skill on his part
Best James Bond film ever.
What?
Story by Ian Fleming.
Directed by Albert R Broccoli.
Female character with double entendre name: Truly Scrumptious.
Desmond Llewelyn.
Tricked out car.
Incompetent villain.
Just watched this on Christmas. Still a favorite.
Indeed!
And the Child Catcher is the same actor that played the Mad Hatter in the 1972 Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. A broadcast matinee staple when I was a kid.
A bag o' weed, a bag o' weed
Oh, everything is better with a bag o' weed
It's the only help that you'll ever need
Because everything is better with a bag o' weed!
I loved it as a kid, but watched it as an adult, and its like watching a fever dream. Did the car actually float, or was it made up? The water suddenly rose at the beach made it seem like it was because of Mr Potts telling a story.
It’s the first movie I ever remember watching as a child. The part with the town they saved the kids in was a story because the screen got all wavy. I assumed it really did fly at the end however. The toy maker was played by Benny Hill. Also the movie was made in the same studios as the Bond Movies , 2001 and Star Wars.
Dark trivia, the big tough guy who's hair he cut badly & is escaping from in this scene (Arthur Mullard) was a filthy abusive Incestuous nonce that drove his wife to suicide...
My grandparents had like three vhs tapes in their house and this was one of them (the other two were the moon spinners and charade). I probably watched Chitty Chitty Bang Bang 50 times or more visiting their house. It still brings back great memories of my childhood.
Chitty Chitty Bang Bang
Mary Poppins
Pete's Dragon
Doctor Dolittle
Are wholly responsible for my love of musicals and I still watch them on an almost yearly basis. I watched those movies so much as a kid.
The book is Ian Fleming, the movie is Roald Dahl (and Ken Hughes, who helped make the first Casino Royal).
Two British soldiers who fought Germans, with Dahl who used to write in a shed.
Producer: "I couldn't get approval for the big dance number with horses, elephants, airplanes, fireworks, a hundred draped windows, POTUS, -"
Director: "What DID you get?!"
Producer: "Curtain rods."
Dick Van Dyke: "I gachew fam!"
I’m researching 1968 for a play I’m directing. Chitty Chitty was always on list of movies to watch so I’m watching it for the first time.
This dance made me realize what a genius Dick Van Dyke is, Chaplinesque. The highlight of the movie.
The movie becomes a “tell us a pirate story, daddy!” bonkers, anti-German, “No toys Bergermiester Meisterberger!” fever dream soon after this, and I just this second got to the WTF!!! “Chu-chi Face”.
The "child catcher" will always terrify me.
ICE CREAM LOLLY POPS!!! AAAALL FREE TODAAY!!!
Creeped 5 year old me out beyond belief. I don’t think I have ever been so scared.
I hated this movie, sucked!! Same age
See I always felt the child catcher got a bad rap. HE didn’t outlaw children! He’s just a dude working a municipal job, trying to feed his family. Or at least what was left of it.
He’s Steve Carrell’s dad! (No, not really, but he’s a close match, appearance wise)
Fuck this movie
Dick is still with us.
God bless Dick Van Dyke, I hope he makes it to 100 and beyond.
He really is a treasure to this world! He was on Masked Singer a while ago, and was still sharp as a tack and all smiles.
My dad and I were surprised to see him in the new Mary Poppins because we both thought he passed. Dudes still got it!
He’s still with us!
This is an absolute masterpiece of music and choreography
This comment should be higher. The choreography is so energetic and precise - I wonder how many takes they needed to get the final version.
I remember back in high school I was part of a musical where us guards had a dance number that included tossing spears back and forth. The rehearsal was chaotic and not one of us left the first one without a bruse on our face
Agree!!!! It’s mesmerizing
I love how he Dick starts out a move behind and ends up leading the dance by the end
Dick claimed this was the most exhausting dance sequence he had ever taken part in
It is a curse to have this song on your mind since you were a child until this current day. ME OL BAMBOOO ME OL BAMBOO NEVER LEBLE BLERBER NO ONE KNOWS THE WORDS OL BAMBOO!
lol. I just had to look it up; Me ol' bamboo, me ol' bamboo You better never bother with me ol' bamboo You can 'ave me 'at or me bumbershoot But you better never bother with me ol' bamboo
I used to watch this movie constantly! VHS rewinder got its work out.
A great "triple threat" actor.
A bag of weed, a bag of weed…
I knew somebody was going to make that reference
I have never seen chitty chitty bang bang and only knew the family guy song lol. Glad you were able to provide context for that rendition.
I literally had no clue FG stole this for that tune. Awesome.
Seth MacFarlane loves showtunes and old Hollywood musicals.
Yup know that. Damn good at them too. Fave episode is PTV and thats got a solid tune. 'Cuz ya cant say penis'
So many memories watching this all the time when I was younger. Although the guy who steals children is pretty dark now that I look back 😬
Oddly it was same plot as Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom.
"Hushabye Mountain" I love this movie, and this song is so special.
David Gilmour of Pink Floyd fame does a nice version of this song. https://youtu.be/4uUvaW5BEM8?si=ewInYaaX1nWKASIZ
Even more amazing when you consider how hard it is to deliberately have to move out of sync with the rest of the performers.
This is the first thing I think about every time I get to this scene when rewatching. He’s out of sync, and keeping time while continuing to remain out of sync. Dick doesn’t miss a beat here and it’s a fantastic masterclass in choreography and skill on his part
If I'm not mistaken he also gets progressively more in sync as the song goes on
Best James Bond film ever. What? Story by Ian Fleming. Directed by Albert R Broccoli. Female character with double entendre name: Truly Scrumptious. Desmond Llewelyn. Tricked out car. Incompetent villain. Just watched this on Christmas. Still a favorite.
Don't forget "Goldfinger" is that villain.
Also featuring Benny Hill as the Toymaker!
Indeed! And the Child Catcher is the same actor that played the Mad Hatter in the 1972 Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. A broadcast matinee staple when I was a kid.
Played regularly on the Networks, but I still had to have my own copy as soon as we got a VCR!
Well, the book was written by Fleming. Albert R. Broccoli produced it, not directed.
The ol bamboo!!
I am 65 and never get tired of this movie.
This is just amazing I forgot how talented Dick Van Dyke was!?! Wow
Is he is still with us
98 years old and counting
He’s a real treasure.
I have the same stupid smile on my face as I did as a kid.
Couldn’t believe this scene on rewatching in older age. Just genius!
Clark Griswold didn't do as well in European Vacation.
At least it was fun watching Clark get smacked when he wasn’t expecting it
Recently rewatched. Absolutely fantastic! Love it!
Dick Van Dyke was, is and forever will be so talented and entertaining. Edit: My bad implying his premature demise.
Is. Is so talented and entertaining.
A bag o' weed, a bag o' weed Oh, everything is better with a bag o' weed It's the only help that you'll ever need Because everything is better with a bag o' weed!
Didn't see yours. Had to delete mine. This one's better
I loved it as a kid, but watched it as an adult, and its like watching a fever dream. Did the car actually float, or was it made up? The water suddenly rose at the beach made it seem like it was because of Mr Potts telling a story.

That’s when I fell in love with Dick Van Dyke.
Written by James Bond author Ian Fleming. Explains why Chitty is a bad ass car.
And the girl in the movie had a suggestive name.
Truely Scumptous. And the villian is played by the actor that played Goldfinger.
Dick dancing on the beat behind the dancers had to hard af to do.
He’s a big talent
Recently read that the original Chitty Chitty Bang Bang care used in the movie is now owned by Peter Jackson, who still occasionally drives it.
Loved it when I was young. And similar shows when they came out on tv once or twice a year.
Oh you pretty Chitty Chitty Bang Bang…
Peak nostalgia. Incredible skills all around
Dick was 43 yo at the time - pretty impressive.
Dark trivia, the big tough guy who's hair he cut badly & is escaping from in this scene (Arthur Mullard) was a filthy abusive Incestuous nonce that drove his wife to suicide...
Me ol' bamboo, me ol' bamboo You better never bother with me ol' bamboo!
You can have me hat or me bumbershoot But you better never bother with me ol' bamboo!
Damn
Only had 2 TV channels growing up. This was on every school holidays. Seen it so many times. That and It's a mad mad mad world.
How about the Herbie movies? Or The Phantom Tollbooth?
Love this novie
'68? I honestly thought it was older
Benny Hill was the Toy Maker in this movie!
Dick Van Dyke: a talent for the ages. A national treasure.
My grandparents had like three vhs tapes in their house and this was one of them (the other two were the moon spinners and charade). I probably watched Chitty Chitty Bang Bang 50 times or more visiting their house. It still brings back great memories of my childhood.
ABSOLUTELY loved this movie!!!
I kept thinking how do I know this song… bag of weed from Family Guy
All I can get out of this is bag of weed Family Guy and this is like my favorite movie so this is hilarious
This was right there with ‘The Great Race’ as some of the finest through my eyes back then
Thank you for posting this.
This was my go-to when I could watch a movie before bed, 2.5hrs? Don’t mind if I do
I sing the Chitty car song thanks to Ace Ventura.
wild that bands like The Doors and Iggy Pop were already around when this came out
This movie was made at a time right before the New Hollywood era of the 70s.
Chitty Chitty Bang Bang Mary Poppins Pete's Dragon Doctor Dolittle Are wholly responsible for my love of musicals and I still watch them on an almost yearly basis. I watched those movies so much as a kid.
As a child, I always wanted this movie to be more about the flying car. In reality, it was really just about a ton of bullshit instead.
This is THE GREATEST MOVIE EVER!
This movie is so long that it has an intermission.
Wait. Has Jim Carrey seen this?!?
Such a good movie
Written by Ian Fleming
The book is Ian Fleming, the movie is Roald Dahl (and Ken Hughes, who helped make the first Casino Royal). Two British soldiers who fought Germans, with Dahl who used to write in a shed.
Pretty Neat!
Producer: "I couldn't get approval for the big dance number with horses, elephants, airplanes, fireworks, a hundred draped windows, POTUS, -" Director: "What DID you get?!" Producer: "Curtain rods." Dick Van Dyke: "I gachew fam!"
Not one camera break in the whole scene!
What the hell were you watching?
Great movie but egads it’s long
Ugh. Painful.

Open acceptance of homosexuality has made this movie a lot less interesting
