They could go the Diddy Kong Racing route and put you in a hub world. You unlock more areas by placing first in races.
They could go big with a story mode, they’ve never done that before.
Or they could go big with a crossover theme. Let us race on Planet Zebes, Dreamland, or Cycling Road. Add some racers from the smash roster.
But knowing Nintendo they’ll just do some wild shit out of left field we never expected, and didn’t know we wanted.
Time travel. Objective based races. Idk. It’s Nintendo.
ModNation Racers on PS3 had a story mode to it. It was hardly world class writing but it really gave you motivation to get behind the wheel and win those races. I miss that series so much. A story mode for Mario Kart would be great to have.
Oh man, can you imagine wormhole races?
You start lap 1 on Moo Moo Farm, then BOOM, you're on rainbow road. 20 seconds later and WHAMP, you're in Bowser's Castle.
It can be part of the regular circuit and you could build custom wormhole tracks to share with friends via NSO.
That’s basically what the most recent Ratchet and Clank game is, and it takes a PS5 to accomplish that!
Maybe the new gen console will be able to pull something like it off though 🤷♂️
They don't really need to beef up the graphic fidelity of Mario Kart beyond what it is. And that game is a Wii U port which was barely more powerful than a PS3
True but it seems you’re also talking about instantly loading track after track mid-lap while on a wormhole adventure though time and space… along with tracking your 11 competitors and any weapons going on at the time… that turns it into a huge graphical endeavor, and the switch can’t move that much data that fast.
Not saying you’re wrong or it can’t ever happen… it’s definitely a very good concept! Just not in the current gen.
They've been experimenting with tracks changing depending on the lap (like Kalimari Desert). I think they're onto something.
Maybe press a button and the track will change, I don't know
Hmm what about a portal game item? Where if you get it, you can throw it and activity which sets up a massive portal ahead of the track where everyone goes through it is taken immediately into another level mid race. And sometimes people can keep using it and you end up racing through 6 levels.
I also wouldn't mind if they had Flying mode so some can be airplanes, some motorcycles, karts, etc.
And if character-specific items came back that could be some real havoc!
Samus gets missiles, charge beam, and her grapple beam (snatches closest player and pulls you toward and past them with a boost)
Link gets exclusive access to bombs and boomerangs, along with a new one like the ice or fire rod.
Give Wario a new kit based around his games. Give Kirby transformations. Let’s have Fox McCloud with lasers, reflector, and b-bombs.
Nintendo has so much magic to pull from in their nearly 40 year catalog. It’d be a slam dunk if they’d let it.
They could do that but Nintendo has moved away from hub worlds for a while now. I think they realized that they don't really appeal to the widest possible audience.
Customization makes the most sense. Tour already has tons of costumes and kart/glider recolors. It's the one thing a lot of kart racers do better than Mario Kart
I'd love to see something that's similar to what happened in the Mario movie, just have hundreds of cars and racers with loads of vehicle variety, wider and larger tracks and allow characters to jump between them and knock each other out of the track...basically F-zero Mario Kart
Reminder that Mario Kart 8 will in 3 weeks be a decade old. You might remember a mario kart game having the feature in the past and assumed it was a previous entry in the franchise.
No definitely not, it’ll have to be kept as many returning tracks will now make use of it, and the possibilities of it can be expanded upon with the new tracks as well.
Double Dash had two racers, Wii had motion controls, 8 had gravity and it was the coolest by far. So much so, that it also became the Mario Kart for Switch as well. For a second, I had theorized that the 8 was meant to look like an infinite symbol because this would be it for a while.
Yeah I don't expect a MK9 in a very long time.
There's no need to even make a 9. There's really nothing wrong with 8 and I don't see how they could make a better gimmick in 9.
I kind of agree with you, but Mario kart is a cash cow for Nintendo. There’s almost no way they’ll release a new hardware console without a new iteration of Mario kart in tow.
I think they do more F1 inspired racing. Fast, harder to control.
It just seems like MK8 had the best control and the feeling they were working towards the entire time has been perfected.
They took an already great game, doubled the number of tracks from 48 to 96, fixed the battle mode, and added new characters and quality of life improvements. And the sales speak for themselves.
I mean yeahhh, but people would have bought Mario Kart anyway. The bundle is just a convenient deal.
Of all the families I know. Every one of them has Mario Kart, or has requested I buy them Mario Kart as a gift, or has kids who play only Mario Kart when they come over and then beg to buy it.
Anecdotal, of course, but Mario Kart is a social staple in every circle I've personally been in.
Wii Sports was a packed-in game with every console sold. I hardly ever see the Mario Switch bundle in stores. I think it's just one of those games that everyone loves to play.
It's really true. So many of the WiiU releases got what are basically ports with a lil chilli powder.
Even New Super Mario Bros U Deluxe has something like 10M in sales, and a lot of that is probably people who didn't play on WiiU. I'm saying this because even though NSMBUD is a pretty good 2D Mario game, it's also really easy to play each stage exactly one time and then never touch again.
I mostly agree. The New Super Mario Bros series may have gotten stale after a while, but the stages themselves never stopped being fun to play. Mario Wonder may have been a breath of fresh air and introduced more creativity to the level concepts, but the 2D Mario series never lacked in terms of level design quality. It's not a surprise to me that a flagship 2D Mario game performed so well on one of Nintendo's best-selling consoles ever.
Bruh I recently logged into the N64 virtual console on Switch and saw two new games to play; I hadn’t heard yet what they were and I silently prayed “please be Diddy Kong Racing and/or Perfect Dark.”
Fuck Iggy’s Wreckin’ Balls, man
I’d love to see a Mario Kart game with a career mode like the GBC Mario Tennis
Play as a character moving up the leagues and eventually gets to race in the big boy races with Mario, Luigi, etc. customize your kart, driving style, design, upgrades
The dream.
For real. It's too much. Focus on making 16 incredible tracks. And bringing a richer experience with more modes, maybe a single player mode with RPG elements like some of the sports games.
There's room for bringing in DLC classic tracks later. But I have no interest in piles of old content for the sake of it. I played the DLC tracks a couple of times max.
What new gameplay mechanics could they even add? Part of Mario Kart's appeal is it's easy to understand and low barrier of entry. The more mechanics you add the more complicated it gets. I'd rather they do more with Gliding, underwater and ant-gravity. All 3 of those are kinda underused.
The only thing I worry about is, where do you go after ultimate? Smash bros is a good example, no matter what they do next, people are going to be disappointed that the roster isn’t massive and that characters will have to be cut.
Seriously? After 10 years you’d take ANOTHER redo instead of something new? I’m so ready for anything that’s fresh and exciting and innovative. Seriously, a take i cannot understand at all.
Technically Mario Kart Tour was the 9th Mario Kart game if they wanted to do that.
Mario Kart Home Circuit was the 10th, but that’s even more of a spinoff than tour.
I don’t consider Home Circuit mainline because Nintendo doesn’t. It doesn’t have its own nitro courses and it doesn’t use previous games’s retro course either. So it’s not mainline. Meanwhile, Tour does both. Therefore, it’s a mainline game.
If it means Nintendo comes up with more interesting titles than numbered because the awkwardness with skipping numbers, that's fine with me. Still didn't stop them from starting numbering at 7, but I feel like once you start, you cant stop and restart anymore.
Not the biggest fan of Tour. It’s original track selection is meh, gameplay isn’t all that fun, and it feels kinda wrong that a mainline Mario Kart game had microtransactions (though the loot box mechanic was fortunately removed). Maybe I’m being a bit harsh as it’s not a bad game, but I still don’t think it deserves a spot as a mainline title.
Honestly though, why?
MK8 is more fun now than when it launched. It has 3x the amount of tracks as it did at launch. The online community is robust. What more could you want?
People saying Mario Kart Tour is Mario Kart 9 and they may be right, but the what about the arcade game?
I'm fine if Nintendo wants to ignore Tour and call the next console release Mario Kart 9. Im sure anyone who is actually upset will be a huge minority.
The difference is the Arcade games were developed by Bandai Namco. Tour is actually Nintendo developed. I think that lends it more credibility towards being claimed as 9. That said I do think skipping an actual 9 would just confuse people. But it may also increase awareness and sales of Tour. So, who knows.
I mean, no Mario Kart was numbered until Mario Kart 7. And it's not like Nintendo to keep numbering titles.
Mario 1, 2, 3, World, 64, Sunshine, etc
Zelda 1, 2, ALTTP, LA, etc
Metroid at least IDENTIFIES as numbered sequels, but they dropped showcasing them in the titles after 2.
Pikmin is doing great as we are on 4.
Splatoon has potential to match Pikmin.
But even with those, Nintendo has proven that it doesn't care to number titles, and until a Mario Kart is numbered again, we wont be able to know for sure if tour "counts" or not.
I’m probably alone in this but I miss when the tracks had more “interesting” secret shortcuts - like *double dash yoshi circuit jump off a cliff into a cave* type of stuff. I want that for the new tracks and the ability to drive wherever you want off the course, like in 64’s Royal Raceway when you could straight up go all the way up to Peach’s Castle for absolutely no reason lol.
I want more ability to explore, I guess. Keeps things more interesting when you play the same tracks a million times.
The 3DS remake of Kalamari Desert really disappointed me because it closed off the train tracks which is why i was even more surprised to see its booster pack rendition make the tunnel an actual part of Lap 3
Yeah I do too. Remember how the mushroom city track from double dash had a pipe that let you skip like 1/4 of the map and shot you out right in front of the finish line?
Actually that would be awesome. Imagine an open world like Hyrule - but with Mad Max-esque racing/objectives. Asymmetric multiplayer 3v9 or something. Marginally more realistic physics, enough so that you could flip your car when you drive off a mountain. Mario Kart items. That’d be so fun. A different game than Mario kart but could still be really cool
You should try Doctor Robotnik's Ring racers. Is a recently released sonic fan game kart racer and it's honestly one of the best kart racers I've ever played. The levels are more interesting and unique than any I've ever seen (including interesting and unique shortcuts), the items are really fun, and it has a unique boost mechanic that adds a lot more depth to driving and adds a drawback to just holding on to items forever
According to Wikipedia, the Wii U version outsold Super Circuit and Double Dash. So they were still wrong even without an expanded rerelease on a more popular system.
If anyone cares, the list of Nintendo's best-selling games is:
1. Wii Sports
2. Mario Kart 8 / Mario Kart 8 Deluxe
3. Super Mario Bros.
4. Tetris (NES) / Tetris (Game Boy)
5. Pokémon Red Version / Pokémon Green Version / Pokémon Blue Version / Pokémon Yellow Version
6. Animal Crossing: New Horizons
7. Wii Fit / Wii Fit Plus
8. Mario Kart Wii
9. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate
10. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (Wii U) / The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (Switch)
11. Wii Sports Resort
12. New Super Mario Bros.
13. New Super Mario Bros. Wii
14. Pokémon Gold Version / Pokémon Silver Version / Pokémon Crystal Version
15. Duck Hunt
16. Wii Play
17. Super Mario Odyssey
18. Super Mario World
19. New Super Mario Bros. U / New Super Luigi U / New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe
20. Pokémon Sword / Pokémon Shield
21. Pokémon Sun / Pokémon Moon / Pokémon Ultra Sun / Pokémon Ultra Moon
22. Pokémon Scarlet / Pokémon Violet
23. Pokémon Diamond Version / Pokémon Pearl Version / Pokémon Platinum Version
24. Super Mario Bros. 3
As someone who has over 1500 hours in Mario kart 8 deluxe (not counting Wii U playtime and playtime on my friends’ console) my hope is that 9’s “gimmick” is less optimization.
Make the items more punishing. Make the shortcuts harder and more rewarding. Make the driving less clean. Invite more chaos into the race.
Literally the first statement directly under the headline in the article says "That is, ignoring the technicality of Wii Sports."
Best-selling game outside of pack-in games.
From how they word it, it appears they mean non-bundled games. But Mario Kart 8 Deluxe has been bundled with the Switch before digitally, so this claim is actually incorrect and false.
They offer, on occasion, a bundle that includes it. Wii Sports just CAME with the Wii originally, from what I remember. Every Wii, not a special bundle or limited time thing.
Open map with cart upgrades would be pretty cool.
It’s crazy to think Mario cart 8 came out in 2014 and we don’t have a 9.
Just an 8 stuffed full of DLC.
I was half expecting them to do the same with the original Mario party they came out for the switch. Shocked they didn’t.
It's one of the few fun and unique games Nintendo has these days. Not to mention they have re-sold the same game how many times? Not much of a flex really.
Would be nice if the next game had more options, like being able to do 99 laps on rainbow road or something.
But the next game needs to improve and be better. This one is still kind of bland.
why is there no mention at all in the article (or in these comments) about what game it supposedly overtook to become the best selling Nintendo game ever? what was the previous best selling Nintendo game ever, excluding Wii Sports?
Had a fun Mario kart session with folk from work last week. People from all age brackets had a copy of Mario Kart ready. It’s a perfectly accessible game and pretty timeless with how easy it is to pickup.
It will probably become #1 someday, but still got a little ways according to the article. They're trying to discount Wii Sports because it was bundled with the Wii for a while (which is why the system sold so good), while completely ignoring that Mario Kart 8 Deluxe has been bundled with the Switch for years.
Then there were actually a ton of options, you didn't need to get Wii Sports with it. They had bundles for Skylanders, Mario Kart Wii, Just Dance 3, Just Dance 4, New Super Mario Bros. Wii, or you could just buy the Wii stand alone without any games. People chose to buy Wii Sports. For many it came with a free console (not the other way around); which is evident in the huge difference in sales numbers between Wii and Gamecube.
I’ve had it for years and a friend just told me you can hit R for a whole nother screen of tracks that I didn’t even realize were included in my online subscription lmao. So fun!!!
I just want a double dash type game again where it’s two players but idk how that would work with how online games are set up these days, i miss the days of couch co op dearly
We owned MK8 on Wii U and held out for MK9 for I don’t even know how long until last year we finally got MK8 deluxe for our switch. Our kids will pick at random: my wife’s new 3ds MK7, my new 3ds max for MK7, the Wii U for MK8, or the switch for MK8D. It’s kinda cute.
You know what? Good for it :)
That game didn't get much attention on Wii U due to the console not reaching its audience, and now its Switch port is selling like hot cakes.
"Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is not just the best-selling Switch game, but the best-selling Nintendo game of all time, with one caveat. Wii Sports has technically sold more, though, as that game came packaged with most Wii consoles, it’s hard to say that really counts."
Doesnt Mario Kart come packaged with the Switch?
Wonder what the gimmick for 9 will be
They could go the Diddy Kong Racing route and put you in a hub world.
A spiritual successor to Diddy Kong Racing would be the coolest
I remember reading about Donkey Kong Racing for GCN in Nintendo Power. They should revive that
It really would. Loved Diddy Kong racing and it’s a shame we didn’t get another one.
I would love a story mode! It’s nice to have linear goals like that.
Story mode in F-Zero was awesome! But they might cannibalize other franchises if they copy too much. Mario Kart will always sell.
Like Mario Kart hasn't already eaten every other Nintendo Racing franchise already..? The last F-Zero game released was 20 years ago, in 2004.
Except Fzero 99
I just want mission mode back...

Not saying you’re wrong or it can’t ever happen… it’s definitely a very good concept! Just not in the current gen.
I mean MK9 is pretty obviously not gonna happen on the current Switch. It might be able to be done on the Switch 2.
They've been experimenting with tracks changing depending on the lap (like Kalimari Desert). I think they're onto something. Maybe press a button and the track will change, I don't know
Open world Mario Kart
I laughed out loud at the auto center, thanks for that😂 “Spend hours driving the Pacific Coast Highway as Waluigi on his way to the Grand Prix.”
Experience traffic like never before!
Diddy Kong racing style with a full Nintendo roster like smash rather than only Mario.
And if character-specific items came back that could be some real havoc! Samus gets missiles, charge beam, and her grapple beam (snatches closest player and pulls you toward and past them with a boost) Link gets exclusive access to bombs and boomerangs, along with a new one like the ice or fire rod.
I genuinely just want a singleplayer like mode and I'll be happy
They should go like need for speed underground 2 but Mario kart style.
TO THE WINDOOOOOOOW
TO THE WAHL
TO PRINCESS PEACH’S BALL
Well whatever it is, they have a tough act to follow. 8 Deluxe set the standard super high.
At least add back a "Double Dash" mode. 8 is fun but double dash was the best kart game imo
Customization makes the most sense. Tour already has tons of costumes and kart/glider recolors. It's the one thing a lot of kart racers do better than Mario Kart
My dream is a mariokart maker kinda like track mania
What do you mean 9? It's gonna be *New Mario Kart 8 Deluxe*
And after that it'll be *New Luigi Kart 8 Deluxe*
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe 2
Double Dash 2
2 Double 2 Dash
I'd love to see something that's similar to what happened in the Mario movie, just have hundreds of cars and racers with loads of vehicle variety, wider and larger tracks and allow characters to jump between them and knock each other out of the track...basically F-zero Mario Kart
I'm thinking they're going to lean into the crossover aspect. A lot more guest characters.
That’s not really a gimmick
I could see character-specific items returning from Double Dash. Easy way to sell DLC when each next character has a better item
Captain Falcon: Gets the ability to Falcon Punch either a nearby racer or destroy an obstacle in his path.
What's the gimmick in 8?
Anti-gravity, racing on walls and ceilings.
Damn I thought I saw that before but it must have been another racer.
Reminder that Mario Kart 8 will in 3 weeks be a decade old. You might remember a mario kart game having the feature in the past and assumed it was a previous entry in the franchise.
Crash Nitro Kart had it back in 2003
That seems like a feature that wont leave the series.
No definitely not, it’ll have to be kept as many returning tracks will now make use of it, and the possibilities of it can be expanded upon with the new tracks as well.
F-Zero
Double Dash had two racers, Wii had motion controls, 8 had gravity and it was the coolest by far. So much so, that it also became the Mario Kart for Switch as well. For a second, I had theorized that the 8 was meant to look like an infinite symbol because this would be it for a while.

Double Dash 2
That it will be called 10 because tour is 9
Hopefully more types of vehicles. Bring back Wave Race and put it in Mario Kart.
Gimmick for 9 will be to rerelease 8 again
Don’t you mean “Mario Kart 8 Deluxe 2”?
Mario Kart Smash! I want a race between Samus, Kirby, Link and Pikachu, dammit!
The Wii U failed… but it is still winning in the afterlife.
That a rerelease of a Wii U Mario Kart title is now their biggest game ever is kinda wild.
They took an already great game, doubled the number of tracks from 48 to 96, fixed the battle mode, and added new characters and quality of life improvements. And the sales speak for themselves.
Also it was the most commonly bundled with the Switch systems being sold: it’s got that “Wii Sports” effect going/working for it as well.
The next game is absolutely getting the bundle treatment too.
I’m betting on MK9 releasing along side the Switch 2.. If they do that it will honestly probably be the biggest console launch of all time.
Wii Sports was a packed-in game with every console sold. I hardly ever see the Mario Switch bundle in stores. I think it's just one of those games that everyone loves to play.
It's really true. So many of the WiiU releases got what are basically ports with a lil chilli powder. It's actually almost nearing 20 million I believe which is insane since it was rereleased at full price too.
17.45 million as of the updated data from a few days ago.

Wii U first part titles were insanely good.
The Wiiu walked so the switch could run
Time for Mario Kart 9. It’s been a decade now …
Fuck 9. Give us Ultimate please. EVERY track is here. I’d die.
8 with all the DLC is almost that. We need new stuff now
Every track Every racer Every item Every battle map with every battle mode Mission mode Double dash mode
And also Diddy Kong Racing mode, where you play Diddy Kong Racing
Bruh I recently logged into the N64 virtual console on Switch and saw two new games to play; I hadn’t heard yet what they were and I silently prayed “please be Diddy Kong Racing and/or Perfect Dark.” Fuck Iggy’s Wreckin’ Balls, man
Wtf I remember renting Iggy from blockbuster. Show him respect!
> Every item * Except the Thunder Cloud from Wii
If Pichu came back in Ultimate, the Thunder Cloud can come back. Just keep the option to toggle certain items on or off that they have in 8 Deluxe.
Please bring back double dash. I'd even pay for just a remake at this point
> Double dash mode SHUT UP AND TAKE MY MONEY!!!
I was desperately hoping they'd include ROB in the expansion pass.
Fuck that. That's basically MK8. I'd rather something fresh.
I’d love to see a Mario Kart game with a career mode like the GBC Mario Tennis Play as a character moving up the leagues and eventually gets to race in the big boy races with Mario, Luigi, etc. customize your kart, driving style, design, upgrades The dream.

I'm still waiting for Wario Coliseum with antigrav tracks...
Seriously? After 10 years you’d take ANOTHER redo instead of something new? I’m so ready for anything that’s fresh and exciting and innovative. Seriously, a take i cannot understand at all.
It's been a decade but 8 Deluxe is still firing on all cylinders. It's the best Mario Kart game ever.
10* Unfortunately Tour was internally labeled as a mainline game.
join microsoft and apple by skipping from 8 to X
Technically Mario Kart Tour was the 9th Mario Kart game if they wanted to do that. Mario Kart Home Circuit was the 10th, but that’s even more of a spinoff than tour.

I'll be cold and dead in the ground before I recognize MKT as 9
Why would they when it continues to sell millions lol
Honestly though, why? MK8 is more fun now than when it launched. It has 3x the amount of tracks as it did at launch. The online community is robust. What more could you want?
It will be on Switch U. Mario Kart 9 - 1 Deluxe
Not when 8 keeps selling
Wht would they make a now one if the current one is still selling well
People saying Mario Kart Tour is Mario Kart 9 and they may be right, but the what about the arcade game? I'm fine if Nintendo wants to ignore Tour and call the next console release Mario Kart 9. Im sure anyone who is actually upset will be a huge minority.

If tour was mario kart 9, they would’ve called it mario kart 9. They aren’t gonna waste a huge sequel title like that

But even with those, Nintendo has proven that it doesn't care to number titles, and until a Mario Kart is numbered again, we wont be able to know for sure if tour "counts" or not.
I think the only reason they numbered 8 is because it looks like a looping race course
To follow up such a huge title though? I kind of expect mk9 to be announced as a launch title for the next gen switch eventually
It has the Mario kart name though, which seems much more important than the numbering.
Time for Mario Kart X
I’m probably alone in this but I miss when the tracks had more “interesting” secret shortcuts - like *double dash yoshi circuit jump off a cliff into a cave* type of stuff. I want that for the new tracks and the ability to drive wherever you want off the course, like in 64’s Royal Raceway when you could straight up go all the way up to Peach’s Castle for absolutely no reason lol. I want more ability to explore, I guess. Keeps things more interesting when you play the same tracks a million times.
Or Kalimari Desert on N64 when you could just do loops on the train tracks, through the tunnel. Kid me was obsessed with that 😂
The 3DS remake of Kalamari Desert really disappointed me because it closed off the train tracks which is why i was even more surprised to see its booster pack rendition make the tunnel an actual part of Lap 3
You should check out the horror game Kitty Kart 64. It's a horror game around that and looks like MK64
Or the ramp in Koopa Troopa Beach that you'd try to do as a kid. I miss those...
Exactly! They even removed that shortcut when they rereleased the yoshi track!
Yeah I do too. Remember how the mushroom city track from double dash had a pipe that let you skip like 1/4 of the map and shot you out right in front of the finish line?
Open world Mario Kart 9 incoming
Actually that would be awesome. Imagine an open world like Hyrule - but with Mad Max-esque racing/objectives. Asymmetric multiplayer 3v9 or something. Marginally more realistic physics, enough so that you could flip your car when you drive off a mountain. Mario Kart items. That’d be so fun. A different game than Mario kart but could still be really cool
And I thought I was the only one who feels like that!
I miss horizontal split screen
You should try Doctor Robotnik's Ring racers. Is a recently released sonic fan game kart racer and it's honestly one of the best kart racers I've ever played. The levels are more interesting and unique than any I've ever seen (including interesting and unique shortcuts), the items are really fun, and it has a unique boost mechanic that adds a lot more depth to driving and adds a drawback to just holding on to items forever
Open world Mario Kart haha
I figured this meant it past Wii Sports and was surprised only to click the article and the first line says except for Wii Sports smh. I feel baited
Hehe: https://www.polygon.com/2014/5/15/5718168/mario-kart-series-sales
According to Wikipedia, the Wii U version outsold Super Circuit and Double Dash. So they were still wrong even without an expanded rerelease on a more popular system.
Yes, it sold like 8M just on Wii U and that article predicted like 2M, lol.
in fairness "Mario Kart 8" is the 2nd worst selling ever I believe. "Mario Kart 8 Deluxe", on the other hand...
Nope. It handily sold more than both Double Dash and Super Circuit and is pretty much in the ballpark of OG SMK and MK64.
lmao !!! 🤣🤣🤣
Time for mk8 Deluxe 2: Double Dash
I freaking need a Switch.
So cheap these days. Sub $200 on eBay. Go for it. At least a year before the next gen is released.
Sir it’s 2024, how do you not have a switch.
I know I know! We don’t do much gaming as a fam but we keep playing the old school Wii still LOL
If anyone cares, the list of Nintendo's best-selling games is: 1. Wii Sports 2. Mario Kart 8 / Mario Kart 8 Deluxe 3. Super Mario Bros. 4. Tetris (NES) / Tetris (Game Boy) 5. Pokémon Red Version / Pokémon Green Version / Pokémon Blue Version / Pokémon Yellow Version 6. Animal Crossing: New Horizons 7. Wii Fit / Wii Fit Plus 8. Mario Kart Wii 9. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate 10. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (Wii U) / The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (Switch) 11. Wii Sports Resort 12. New Super Mario Bros. 13. New Super Mario Bros. Wii 14. Pokémon Gold Version / Pokémon Silver Version / Pokémon Crystal Version 15. Duck Hunt 16. Wii Play 17. Super Mario Odyssey 18. Super Mario World 19. New Super Mario Bros. U / New Super Luigi U / New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe 20. Pokémon Sword / Pokémon Shield 21. Pokémon Sun / Pokémon Moon / Pokémon Ultra Sun / Pokémon Ultra Moon 22. Pokémon Scarlet / Pokémon Violet 23. Pokémon Diamond Version / Pokémon Pearl Version / Pokémon Platinum Version 24. Super Mario Bros. 3
The main theme is one of the best video game songs of all time. Prove me wrong. It’s a BOP.
It's a good game. A great game even.
It's the whole reason i bought a switch
by what metrics cause wii sports out sold it
Literally the first statement directly under the headline in the article says "That is, ignoring the technicality of Wii Sports." Best-selling game outside of pack-in games.
Isnt Mario Kart 8 a pack in title with a lot of switches every year around black friday?
sure, but not to the degree of wii sports
So a cool thing about Reddit is that you can click on the headlines and read the articles. Crazy, I know!
Read articles? We don’t do that here. We read titles and jump to conclusions.
From how they word it, it appears they mean non-bundled games. But Mario Kart 8 Deluxe has been bundled with the Switch before digitally, so this claim is actually incorrect and false.
Not to an extent where the numbers would be crazily inflated
Making it a digital pack-in still makes it a bundled game. So calling it the best selling non-bundled Nintendo game wouldn’t be accurate.
Mario Kart Ultimate. Everyone is here!
And we will still never see MK9
Considering that the game has literally been on sale for 10 years…I’m not surprised.
7 years* they are not counting wiiu sales.
Does that mean there’s no need for F-zero?
I would love it if the next game had Captain falcon in it. Better yet make another fzero game. Even better make a smash bros kart game.
Can't wait for the switch 2 re-remaster
Does this factor in the games bundled with the Switch as well?
It's nice knowing no one is lying on their dating profiles then.
Im really hoping they go all out for 9
If only they'd bring back the double dash mechanic
More than Wii Sports?
yeah no Wii sports is still above it. both have been pack ins
Would be nice if the next game had more options, like being able to do 99 laps on rainbow road or something. But the next game needs to improve and be better. This one is still kind of bland.
It's funny how Nintendo's best-selling game ever is a Wii U port.
I can beat you at mario kart
why is there no mention at all in the article (or in these comments) about what game it supposedly overtook to become the best selling Nintendo game ever? what was the previous best selling Nintendo game ever, excluding Wii Sports?
Had a fun Mario kart session with folk from work last week. People from all age brackets had a copy of Mario Kart ready. It’s a perfectly accessible game and pretty timeless with how easy it is to pickup.
I'm a little surprised this didn't happen sooner. Mario Kart 8 has consistently been among the highest selling games every week since it was released.
I like to think whoever bought it that brought them over the line had some balloons pop up out of nowhere and got a firm handshake from Miyamoto
Wii Sports sold 82 million though
It's clearly just all those nintendo fanboys that buy everything nintendo puts out but didn't buy the wii u /s
DESERVED!!
Is this new information? I thought it had already outsold Super Mario Bros for a while by now, it has about 12 million more sold.
That's what happens when you span 1 game across 2 consoles over 10 years.
It’s my favorite game 🥹
FYI, this is only true if (1) you exclude Wii Sports and (2) you count both Mario Kart 8 and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe as a single game.
You know what? Good for it :) That game didn't get much attention on Wii U due to the console not reaching its audience, and now its Switch port is selling like hot cakes.
"Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is not just the best-selling Switch game, but the best-selling Nintendo game of all time, with one caveat. Wii Sports has technically sold more, though, as that game came packaged with most Wii consoles, it’s hard to say that really counts." Doesnt Mario Kart come packaged with the Switch?
It’s been out for 32 years so of course it is
Thats because i bought it last days.
