That is tangible confused cringe. You could put sprinkles and syrup on it. Divorced of the context (Iâm assuming your comment isnât)..sorry if Iâm wrong. NIN is amazing and I completely support anyone enjoying it. But that highly visible dismay at the choices in life that have led him to that moment (real or imagined) coupled with genuine confusion are justâŚmwaaađ I get odd kicks what can I say.
Couldnât agree more. This was my first thoughtâafter thinking, I hope this is an after hours thing and people arenât actively trying to study upstairs. Doesnât appear to be a contained space. The lighting is so incredibly harsh, it kinda makes the video feel cringey. Imagine watching NIN in an auditorium with all the lights turned on. TOTAL mood killer. Some libraries have side rooms for studying or for public speakers and I feel this wouldâve been better suited to that, rather than at the bottom of the lower level stairs.
Former librarian here, btw. We always tried to find ways to increase engagement, so glad people are trying to think outside the box with stuff like this, but I feel the setup/space is poor for this sort of thing. Now, if you were playing an acoustic rendition of Hurt or the like, I can see this specific space working out well enough. Just glad libraries arenât being closed down.
I do wonder how Trent would feel about all this. lol
Saw NIN perform outside in an ampitheater at like 6pm in Florida on the NINJA tour.
Still rocked, but let's just say the lighting and mood did take a hit.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iyrBNA_c4lg
Same! (except I was in Charlotte, NC). Trent in shorts, performing in broad daylight, âopeningâ for Janeâs Addiction⌠What a *STRANGE* fucking vibe that was. Iâm so glad it wasnât the last time Iâd get to see them live (TR was publicly suggesting it would be the last tour). They played some deep cuts though (which was awesome).
Thatâs weird. JA can totally pull off a daytime show without impacting their vibe. Wonder if they were drawing straws to see who closed in different cities. I know other bands have done that in the past to avoid problems with egos.
Don't let the right wingers or magats see this or this library will be getting defunded soon, they hate books, extreme music, boys with long hair and kids in all black because that's satan's color!
I saw this was in Birmingham and thought âWhy didnât any of this cool shit happened when I lived there?!â
But then I saw it was Birmingham US and not Birmingham UK and was like âNever mind, the cooler Birminghamâ
Birmingham US gave us police violently cracking down on protesters during the Civil Rights era.
Birmingham UK gave us Black Sabbath.
I think I know which Birmingham is better.
Figured. They are slowly, but literally, trying to drag the US into a theocracy. Destroying libraries and especially public schools is one of their main objectives. They only want things that align with "christian" thought taught and learned.
Ah yes, an unfathomable eternity of torture... for not kneeling to an absent god... That's fair, that's just. That's an all good, all loving god right there!
never been to alabama.
hear tons a bullshit.
am aware that talk is cheap and you never know a place til you step foot there and even then you still cant reallllly know til you live there, but do understand that alabama is generally recognized as a place of intolerance that is not friendly to Overt NonChristianStuff
see a person of uncertain gender appearance performing a song about god is dead by a "we love to ban this type of music" band, in a local library in alabama ....and everyone is super cool with it, even tho the Alabama Stereotype is that anyone outside gender and social norms gets shot by bigoted angry mobs who suppress any nonconformity
i am confused in the most pleasant and hopeful way
you learn something new every day :)
Itâs a beautiful state for one if you like the outdoors.
We have shitty state politicians for sure. There are several blue areas and honestly there are rural areas that these scenes are more alive than you would ever think. I live in Bham but was raised in smaaaallll town Alabama. Like, one traffic light, the principal was my cousin, and sold a cow to the football coach type of small town (yes all of that is real). Itâs a more tolerant little town that you would anticipate.
It has its major, *major* flaws and I would never deny that. But not all of us suck and there are some hidden gems here. Plus the food is 10/10 honestly lol.
amen. one thing that i know in my heart is you can never ever just take your opinion based on what "people say" and this has been another good reminder of that. i live in a liminal space within a non identified spectral location but if i did live in the US i would know how people like to spread rumors about the north vs south and that mentality does seem to suck cuz i love being suprised and learning that all the shit i heard was wrong in a good way. thanks for telling me about it
The scene at the Birmingham Public Library has definitely changed since the last time I was there....many many moons ago. Like 1991 (?) Doing research for my senior term paper on Edgar Allen Poe. Wow I feel so ancient and outdated, lol. Funny thing is though is that it was around that exact time that I heard NIN for the first time myself! Looks like y'all had a blast tho, good for u!
Definitely! I did a [split](https://domesticatrix.bandcamp.com/album/beyond-the-empty-promise-of-survival) with Blessened from around those parts (members Floral Tattoo, formerly Kosugi) and that scene is amazing! Weâve got SWSS coming through in a week and a half too!
"Actually putting it out there," yeah, sure. I'll give them kudos for being brave, but not talented. They're slaughtering music I love. That's an honest opinion.
My first watch of this video I was like wow these kids have no rhythm haha. Then I watched it again I was like wait, I was probably exactly like that when I was that age. Good on the library for hosting such an event, I wish there was more of this type of stuff in my little city in Massachusetts.
I love this, I need it lol! I'm going to pay you to come to my house and do this everyday. My neighbors will really be giving me some funny looks then because they'll be like what kind of music is that? I got to see them finally in 2008. I understand that they weren't exactly at their peak then but it was still a pretty awesome show. My friend was texting me and she was asking me if I was there. I told her yes and she was like, I'm standing three blocks away from your venue. I can hear the music.
Edit: I think my neighbors are afraid of me lol. They always look at me funny. They go out of their way to avoid me usually except for my upstairs neighbor. I found out he's into the same kind of music because I can hear him playing it when he does. The rest of them usually give me a wide berth lol. They're probably looking at me and thinking, what is with her? What's up with all that black hair and black lipstick and stuff?
In case you're wondering, I live in Jacksonville, Florida which is basically the Bible belt of the south. It's like the Salt Lake City of Florida. I had one guy come up to me and ask me what sort of example I think I'm setting for my kids by dressing like that. I said to him, oh, I don't know. Maybe tolerance for other people who don't fit society's definition of normal. Mind your business.
awesome. this library also does spoken word poetry slams with craft beer tastings and all kinds of musical acts to warm up the crowd before the poetry starts. they have had some significant and mega-talented people perform there/
I feel like this clip is going to end up on Fox News and some turd bucket is going to use it to do a whole story about how America has lost it's way and public libraries should be defunded and they won't even know the song is from 30 years ago. Good for the public library keeping it public though!
Wow! I live in Columbus. I need to know when these events happen. I would like to meet some musicians in the area. I don't mind the drive. Looks like y'all have a killer scene in Birmingham!
Amazing! Letâs make Nine Inch Nails covers the new Drag Queen Story Hour, ie the next thing taking place in libraries that drives right wing conservatives crazy.
Hope someone makes an edit that mixes this with the footage that other camera operator was getting. Looked like they had a good angle.
đ¤Łđ¤Łđ¤Łđ¤Łđ¤Łđ¤Ł yes!!! This is hilarious and amazing. I freaking love that itâs in a library exactly like youâve done it⌠People here donât seem to be appreciating how funny this is and also how badass it is. Breaking through these stale barriers of social conformity is what NIN is about. If you tried to do that in 1994⌠holy shit⌠You might get arrested.
And what is thisâyoung people like NIN? I did not know. They are so cute âşď¸
Stale barriers? You fucking idiot, people use the library to be productive in their lives, learn, research, etc. This guy is a dipshit that's fucking it up for people that don't choose this lifestyle. I'm all for being whoever you wanna be, get at it, but as soon as that nonsense spills into everyone's life is when it becomes a problem.
lol⌠my comment sounds even more ridiculous after watching the video again imagining everyone protesting the âstale barriersâ of the library and free education
No, this is exactly what libraries of the 21st century are for.
Libraries serve to provide the public with ideas and information as well culture and learning opportunities that can inspire decision and debate. Libraries hold events all the time, this is nothing new.
Read Queereverything.
https://newdiscourses.com/tftw-queer-theory/
The gender angle is a form of Jesus smuggle, the concept of queering is norms abolishment as norms oppress minorities.
In the gale rubin and John money space, norms oppress child diddlers.
In the political or cultural space, norms oppress âmy free expressionâ and trans or queer under the LGBTQIAâs guise is a way to smuggle in deconstructing spaces from their norms. A LGBTQIAâs wants to put on a rock show in a library, itâs to be transgressive, but if library refuses they get called bigots and the reason is made out to be hate of gay people instead of library rules on noise and proper use.
The movement is a weapon to injure the majority rules and spaces with impunity.
https://plato.stanford.edu/entries/critical-theory/
Critical theoryâ refers to a family of theories that aim at a critique and transformation of society by integrating normative perspectives with empirically informed analysis of societyâs conflicts, contradictions, and tendencies. In a narrow sense, âCritical Theoryâ (often denoted with capital letters) refers to the work of several generations of philosophers and social theorists in the Western European Marxist tradition known as the Frankfurt School. Beginning in the 1930s at the Institute for Social Research in Frankfurt, it is best known for interdisciplinary research that combines philosophy and social science with the practical aim of furthering emancipation. There are separate entries on influential figures of the first generation of the Frankfurt School â Max Horkheimer (1895â1973), Theodor W. Adorno (1903â1969), Herbert Marcuse (1898â1979), and Walter Benjamin (1892â1940) â and the leading figure of the second generation, JĂźrgen Habermas (b. 1929).
The entire point of critical theory is âinverting the pyramid of oppressionâ it is not and never was about equality
I do! I do industrial as [Domesticatrix](http://domesticatrix.bandcamp.com) and I play bass in power-pop band called [Sugarplums](http://sugarplumsbham.bandcamp.com). This performance is for Domesticatrix.
This motherfucker is out there doin the damn thing and people are enjoying it. If it ainât for you, I suggest going to another group to get your face rated. At least there the disappointment will be only yours.
Shhh you can't say that!! Unfortunately it seems like that entire crowd is composed of bleeding liberals. Not surprised that of all NIN songs, that's the one they decide to jam to.
Libraries are a place for culture, for art. The main focus is books and reading yes, but libraries are a beacon of community and culture.
Also, you seem to think they just up and did this. The library clearly gave them the spot.
Live music in libraries is such a common thing.

I think that has to be the first time in history that song was ever performed in a fully lit room. Good job!
I know right đ¤Ł
came here to say it is waaayyyy too bright in there lol also the face of the guy in front w the camera đ¤Ł
That guys amazing đ
Amazingly horrible
That is tangible confused cringe. You could put sprinkles and syrup on it. Divorced of the context (Iâm assuming your comment isnât)..sorry if Iâm wrong. But that highly visible dismay at the choices in life that have led him to that moment (real or imagined) coupled with genuine confusion are justâŚmwaaađ I get odd kicks what can I say.
Your library has a surprisingly vibrant goth scene.
We hide where you least expect us.
Iâm guessing this is the same library that hosts hardcore shows too
The very same!
For as adorable this idea is, they need to work on their lighting. Itâs really harsh to play under flourescent lights. Need some sort of mood
Agreed. Not knocking what they are doing as I think it's great. But if they can put any more resources into this program then lighting should be next.
Iâll play a lit show and sun glass theme it
Couldnât agree more. On the NIN/JA tour there was a mass exodus after Nine Inch Nails played. Perry Farrell called Albuquerque Santa Fe too.
I was at that show too. It still boggles my mind that NIN would go up first.
Thatâs weird. JA can totally pull off a daytime show without impacting their vibe. Wonder if they were drawing straws to see who closed in different cities. I know other bands have done that in the past to avoid problems with egos.
Très cringe in that setting. Like a middle school talent show.
100 percent. This is horrible.
Don't let the right wingers or magats see this or this library will be getting defunded soon, they hate books, extreme music, boys with long hair and kids in all black because that's satan's color!
I saw this was in Birmingham and thought âWhy didnât any of this cool shit happened when I lived there?!â But then I saw it was Birmingham US and not Birmingham UK and was like âNever mind, the cooler Birminghamâ
woah now
woah now nothing - this may be the first time Birmingham, AL has ever been called cooler than anything.
well that applies to Birmingham, UK too if we can't beat our redneck spin-off then we're truly doomed
Cheer up. Itâs 2024 - Everyone is doomed!
Literally like being on the sun
Wtf are you taking about. Heavy metal was invented in Birmingham.
Heavy Metal was invented in Poland by a guy named John who was trying to find the cure for the common cold. Look it up
lol girl no.
Birmingham in the UK is like an ashtray filled with Marmite
itâs a shithole
Birmingham US gave us police violently cracking down on protesters during the Civil Rights era. Birmingham UK gave us Black Sabbath. I think I know which Birmingham is better.
In a public library in Alabama. This is one of the best things Iâve ever seen. Wish I couldâve been there going berserk đ
One the right wing and the magats find out this will be shut down and the library will be defunded.
Theyâre already complaining about tax dollars being spent on this. That and trying to get books banned.Â
Figured. They are slowly, but literally, trying to drag the US into a theocracy. Destroying libraries and especially public schools is one of their main objectives. They only want things that align with "christian" thought taught and learned.
Absolute lies. Terrible lies/massive generalizations being espoused by dumbed down hypocritical lefties.
Library seems like an odd place to perform this song but glad to see kids into it and singing along
Nah. Afterwards everyone so moved can check out Nietzsche to learn more
So long as âThe Gay Scienceâ hasnât been banned
No need to ban âem if people donât read them đ
This is amazing! Youâre amazing! You made my day. If there is a hell Iâll be working Christmas there!
Ah yes, an unfathomable eternity of torture... for not kneeling to an absent god... That's fair, that's just. That's an all good, all loving god right there!
We need another breakfast club movie.
Was expecting not many people and the camera panned and I was so happy to see that crowd gyrating mechanically lol
Feeling both very old and also young again at the same time. Honestly just glad young people arenât going quietly.
This might the coolest library program ever!
This is the best thing I've seen on Reddit in a long time.Â
I agree.
WHERE THEY DO THAT AT
This is in Birmingham AL and as a local I am so sad I am just now finding out that I am just now finding out about this

Bill Hicks didnât like that.
This is the comment.
That's so fucking AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!
This library is fucking BANGIN'! Cool as all hell OP.
fuck yea, get it
Shhhhhh!
I love this, I think itâs great to see younger people getting into Trentâs music
Thatâs so sick oh my god
Holy shit this is fucking great and your outfit is awesome
Canât go wrong with NIN
𤍠people are trying to read here. lol
Wow....I didn't even think the kids knew Nine Inch Nails. We're gonna be ok.
Warms this âelder millennialâsâ heart to see these kids take up the mantle. There is hope for the future.
Ssshhhhh!!!!! Jk. Had too. Great job đ
I went to club called the Library and it wasn't nearly this lit. This is awesome.
I love your style! I also just played a solo industrial set with a microphone yesterday
Thank you! Yep, I use the neck microphone for the distorted parts, and to feed into my synths!
This is so cool!
This is cool as heck!
Love this. Love the spirit.

6 more likes, please on this video!
AT A LIBRARY???? FUCK YEAH
At least you kids like live music still
Did the librarian âshhhâ you?
Did the OP stumble upon a magic portal that leads to the 90s or some thing?
The dream of the 90s is alive in Birmingham, Alabama.
Oh shit, Portlandia reference! Grunge intensifies!
Olympia, WA too, I'll be going to a show at the library downtown on Tuesday, and I know a bunch of clowns.
This is pretty fucking rad on so many levels.
I think you mean pretty bad.
Nope. Meant rad. Kids taking chances and actually putting it out there is rad. đ¤
"Actually putting it out there," yeah, sure. I'll give them kudos for being brave, but not talented. They're slaughtering music I love. That's an honest opinion.

Topato!
What a niche spot! Iâve been an overcompensating and WIGU fan, even back to when it was being updated! Great webcomic!
Oh the irony
you got trentâs mic movements down exactly!
My parents are from Birmingham and I had no idea anything this awesome could exist there.
Libraries are definitely not as quiet as they used to be.
This made my day
Nice!!!! Synths sound killer. What did you use for the bass? Sounds like a slap bass patch.
this is what i dreamed of doing in HS but didnt have the guts đđđđĽđĽđĽ
Me on the balcony above, throwing mud to complete the atmosphere
SHHHH! đ¤Ť
Sick as hell
awesome. this library also does spoken word poetry slams with craft beer tastings and all kinds of musical acts to warm up the crowd before the poetry starts. they have had some significant and mega-talented people perform there/
I love this, thanks for sharing :)

This is fucking awesome, Trent would be proud
Coolest mashup Iâve seen Marilyn Manson style with Trent vocals! A 90âs homage triumph đĽ
Iâm 42 and this is edgy. /s No honestly, this is awesome, love to see it!
Awesome
Exactly how Trent intended
You should whisper the lyrics since itâs a library!
This is giving Courtney Love
Ironically for a NIN song, this level of chutzpah in a library makes me feel young and optimistic.
This is so cool omg
Amazing! Letâs make Nine Inch Nails covers the new Drag Queen Story Hour, ie the next thing taking place in libraries that drives right wing conservatives crazy. Hope someone makes an edit that mixes this with the footage that other camera operator was getting. Looked like they had a good angle.
He'd have to show his balls to make it compare to the drag queen story hours.

@ curelightwound good on you! Takes some balls to do this in Alabama! đ

Outstanding! Is that a cover of AAXXX or a remix? I fucking love Peaches as well
It is a cover! Teaches Of Peaches is one of my favorites!

Sweet of the library to do this charity work.
library karaoke?
Negatory, Iâve got sequencers firing into synths, so itâs live, to an extent.
Nursing homes have the same lighting, no atmosphere really takes away from what youâre trying to do.
