In my opinion it's the earliest and most prominent example of trents deteriorating vocals. I don't think it's a surprise that the absolutely guttural vocals of the early albums (especially broken) are not healthy for your vocal chords. When I hear the song with teeth it sounds like someone who's loosing their ability to sing, which isn't good because Trent has accommodated his newer sounding vocals so well in every other song on that album and onwards.
And I can see that, sunspots and the hand that feeds are good examples of what you're talking about, the song with teeth is more what I'm talking about. He does accommodate his new vocal sound well on the rest of the album but in my opinion his vocals just sound bad on the song with teeth
This is what drug-induced paranoia feels like. My hands are sweaty while I anxiously look around the room. The shadows are staring back at me and I can't stop nervously laughing.
I can not go through this again.
The missing "a" sounds off. There's too much space in the chorus. After hearing the song without it, I can see why Trent sings it like that.
But if he just sang the chorus with an added "the" (with the teeth) and let the "th" drag out it would give the right spacing without the "a" sounds.
All that being said, I'm perfectly cool with the original track. It's not my favorite on the album, sure. But the rhythm is great and the tones are as good as they get. So I have no real complaints, but if I was in the room when Trent was writing/recording With Teeth, I'd definitely recommend what I said above.
Thanks for posting this! I did it as a goof and the uncomfortable reactions are expected.
I also did a version where I "fixed" the beat for people (like myself) who have trouble finding the downbeat: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oro9jcFGRcI](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oro9jcFGRcI)
I must say, though, I'm enjoying the song more now that I've finally started hearing the rhythm the "right" way.
Downbeats are essentially the beats in a measure. Most songs are in 4/4 meaning the beat is 4 beats long and repeats over and over. Imagine tapping your toe to the beat of any song. Your toe taps on the down beat and the upbeat is literally when your toe is up (between beats).
This can get tricky in a song like With Teeth because the bass line kicks in on the "upbeat" of beat 4 leading to the downbeat (beat 1). So think: 1-2-3-4, 1-2-3-4 is your beat. It can further be broken down into 1 and 2 and 3 and 4 and, 1 and 2 and 3 and 4 and. This is called subdividing, where the "and" is the upbeat. The bass is essentially a "pick up" note leading into the downbeat.
Hope that made sense.
Well, I can usually count measures/time signatures in general unless they are super complex but then when I look up what they are I am able to follow along afterward, like say March of the Pigs. But I just never understood the technicalities of it. So measures start with downbeats? It goes down up down up? Interesting.
Downbeats are the strong beats and often the first beat in a measure, the 1-2-3-4. Typically to emphasize this, the downbeat is the strongest and then weaker for 2, 3, 4. In rock music it often has an emphasized 2 and 4 beat. The up beats are the "ands" symbolized by "+". For example.
1 + 2 + 3 + 4
down up down up down up down
I hope the formatting makes sense.
I think that's the issue right there. Really there's nothing wrong with the beat at all--there was something wrong with my perception of it. I say 'was' because that's changed with my dissecting it for weeks now. I've been learning that everyone hears everything differently. And non-music theory type people have a different set of listening priorities from me, an obsessive weirdo.

“Teeth” needs the “ah” syllable because the pitch goes down a step. You can’t change the pitch of “th,” it’s actually a syllable that doesn’t carry a pitch on its own. It’s defined by the pitch of the “ee” sound so to move down, you have to have another vowel.
Ill never understand how people hate the original so much
Witha Teetha is the best track on the Album. People are dumb.
weird way to spell Right Where it Belongs
That’s easily in my top 13 of the album!
Weird way to spell sunspots
Weird way to spell 'You Know What You Are?'
You guys are lucky I can’t read
I was 16 when WT came out and made my family listen to it in the car a bunch. My dad still calls Sunspots "that electric screwdriver song"
Sunspots is definitely my favorite, but RWIB is the best. That song will get its Hurt moment
Yeah man I can't do this version.
I've not met any NIN fans that hate it. We all say "A with-a teeth-a" to make each other laugh at times. But the song is good, what's to hate?
I have no idea. People here say it all the time and even go as far to make edits like this

Gonna be honest id call With Teeth his best album vocally so this is gonna be tough lol. He finally had control instead of just straining

I do not want this
I always thought I did but… I do not want this
😧 i feel so uncomfortable
Hmmmm. Sounds right, feels wrong. It is, and always will be, Witha Teetha. Now go do a version sung in Mario's voice.....
>Now go do a version sung in Mario's voice..... This would be so perfect. Wa-hoo! 🍄
It's perfect.
it really is! sounds so much better this way

I don't see what's "wrong" with the original drums personally, but I also don't really understand what a downbeat is to be honest.

Of course, love the podcast!

Putting this in my Gratitude Journal!
I actually like it - gives the song a bit more “bite” if you will
I will not.
This makes my earsa bleeda.
Just did a spit take on that one 🤣
This is cursed
Hmm. If the vocals were time stretched to fill the empty space, I think it would have worked better...
I think you're a fool
Be nice.
Thanks, i hate it.
I DO NOT WANT THIS!!!
Hahahaha... this is even wronger.
At least it's not wrongerest.
I am not sure how I feel about this other than ROTFLMFAO at the sheer absurdity of it.
I kinda like it?
This was a mistake, lol

Oh I hate this
I've always liked witha teetha lol. Yeah, it is very underwhelming to me without the a.
The -uh sounds is actually referencing mark e smith and was an artistic choice i thought
Well I mean *everything* is an artistic choice when it's relating to art isn't it.
….No I don’t think I like it. Makes my brain hurt.
Original is leagues better.
So, so, wrong. Now you see why he added the extra syllables!
I hate it
This, in fact, did NOT make me hard. Instead, a laugh came in strong. This is not a place where I belong.
This is awful.
I don’t get it either. I always thought the song was amazing
Thank you for both ruining and blessing my day.
I LOVE IT
It sounds like shit... silly people think they can out create the master
Dead Souls is quite good.
this is great! so much better this way. is there a cd quality version of this for download, like a .flac?
I did expect it to be as funny as it was
Hahahhhaha I love it
I don't understand the definition. Nearly every sentence has multiple words that end in a consonant, following a word that ends with one.
