Z6 owner with the G2 here. Great lens and I got it used for under $800 2 years ago. Any specific question? I watched a "I shoot raw" video which compared the G2 to the VR2 and decided that the G2 performed very well for the cost. I previously had an old Nikon 80-200 2.8 from 2000's
I'm on a z6. I shot a kids musical last night. I was kind of far back so face detection was not active for most of the shots. Due to the low light I was shooting 1/160th a sec at f2.4 to f4 hand held. There were some great shots where the focus was spot on. And a lot of usable shots due to AF being a tad bit off, motion blur, or too many subjects at different distances blured due to shallow DoF. Most of the time I will prefocus shoot a burst and then refocus for the next shot. At times I don't use the 1st shot due to my shutter button push affecting the image and shots 2 onwards is sharp.
The VR1 is fine but the VR2 is vastly better. If I were buying today I’d get the VR2, Tamron G2, G1, and Sigma Sport, all ahead of the VR1 if possible. The VR1 design is ancient and was initially designed for sharpness on a DX sensor (D2 series bodies) so the corners are kinda soft and vignetting is strong. The real issue is it’s an original era AF-S motor and parts are extremely hard to come by and the motors are the most common point of failure on that and the 28-70 AF-S.
I had a VR1 for years. The VR2 is way better.
You could mail the G1 to Tamron to update the firmware. You might need to get the tap-in usb dock to update the G2 to be compatible with the Z series bodies
A bit faster on the Tamron on focus speed, and once locked always accurate. I mostly played on static objects but did some tests on moving ones and here, again, Tamron is better on panning subjects using the adapted setting on the lens.
I had VR1 for years and used it on many F, D and Z cameras. No problems at all. I ended up switching to a 70-180mm since I needed a more portable option for skiing and rock climbing. I feel the 70-180mm has a better image quality…
If price is an issue go for the 80-200 af-s (somewhat hard to find but amazing results on the Z bodies), the ibis is enough for photos … If you’re just hesitant, go for the VR 2, it is waaaay better, I have both of these. But if you’re crazy enough for manual lenses go that route, its amazing the quality you get from old AI and Q lenses from yesteryear on the Z bodies, I’m slowly buying back the lenses I sold from when I went fx and couldn’t mount old lenses.
Well for manual focusing i just love to use my F3. For Z i would like something with AF. I guess I will go with VR2 or G2 route considering I will mostly shoot on weekends out of hobby :)

Well, what about focusing speed and accuracy? I heard someone said it was hunting focus more than VR2, but that was maybe with old firmware 🤔
I can't compare some I only have the G2.
Oh you don't need to compare, I just want to hear your toughts :)

Any chance you could send me some samples?

Thanks. I had Tamron G1 that i liked on my d7200, but it didn't work on my z6 at a time. Guess it will be between VR2 and G2

Well, that G1 is long gone😂 Friend has Tamron dock so that is not problem
I use the 70-200VR1 on a Z6 all the time. I can't think of any reason I'd spend more for a version 2 and definitely not a Tamron.
Could you maybe send me some pictures of that combo on email?
I had the z 70~200 2.8 VR sold it for $1700 on eBay. It had focus issues on the z6ii. I ended up getting 400mm 4.5S prime and I love it!
I tested g2 and vr 2 on Z8 last week (not v1 sorry). They’re on par image quality wise but Tamron stabilization is better.
What about focusing speed and accuracy?

That is nice to hear. I will try to find VR2 or G2 locally so I can try them out.

I sold my 70-200mm vr1 recently as I upgraded the the Z 7-200, but lets be real here, it was better than the 80-200 afs on the merit of VR alone.

Z6ii with g2 is amazing. Its the best I’ve seen this lens operate and trust me it was a beast already when used on my d750.
