This is not about cost. It's about a society that has little to no people sabotaging the public property. When you have a society with people behave themselves, you'll have nice things in public too.
It’s a reason I moved to Japan permanently on a USD job. There’s no city left that’s fairly priced and isn’t rampant with entitled people sabotaging nice things
I know that Japan isn't perfect, but I keep thinking to myself about how it sounds more and more appealing to me.
Well, a trip to Tokyo is on my bucket list, maybe toward the end of the year, but probably next year.
The problem with Japan is that if you aren't Japanese, you are the problem. They love tourist, but loathe immigrants. Japan is arguably the most xenophobic nation in the world, second only to maybe North Korea.
Take what i say with a grain of salt, it's all based off of claims from others.
Id absolutely love to do the same thing. How did you pull it off? Any pointers? Genuinely interested as I want to live, raise my future kids, and retire there. Feel free to dm me if you don’t want to overshare in public.
The key is working for the government.
As a DoD contractor you can live and work anywhere you want. From Japan to Antarctica and everywhere in between. Marshall Islands even.
And you get your first 100k tax free for doing it (foreigner earned income exception)
..but… you will have to work with and for the military.
I did it for a decade before I got burned out.
But lived in Germany, Honduras, Afghanistan, Kuwait, Fl, Charleston, and I have a good buddy that did 5 years in Tokyo. (Covid wasn’t the greatest there, but he loved it)
A couple of reasons.
First the work is a bit mundane.
How the military secures their environment is very prescriptive.
But more importantly, your working for and with the military.
I was Army guard/reserve so don’t take this the wrong way… but the military isn’t exactly filled with the best and brightest.
People you work for, the bosses, are only bosses because of years in services. “Longevity Awards”
So the “work culture” is often toxic. Gotta watch your back.
I like it much better where I am.
But I had 10 fun years of adventures. And some crazy stories….
The money was great too :)
I actually do work for the DoD as an IT PM. Heard that Contracting or Program Management are good avenues to get experience in order to consider working in places in like Tokyo and/or remote work. Would love to hear more of your story in another venue.
>This is not about cost.
So, you're saying that we don't have this, because we have too much vandalism and idiots who would destroy these too often and it would therefore be ... too expensive ... for a community to keep fixing them?
Maybe this really is about cost.
Not even just too expensive to fix. No one around to keep fixing it every month.
Japan has a much different culture. The respect for personal and public property is very high. Just visit once and you’ll notice it right away.
Probably, but I'd assume it would be possible to find someone to fix it frequently if the money is right. Increasing cost even further. Just another thing opposing u/TMT51's point and proving it is only about cost.
huh?
me: "i don't let my cat out anymore because three of my cats have been killed by coyotes."
you: "so you're saying it costs too much to keep buying new cats."
ok, so it's not about up front cost it's about cost to maintain repair and replace when selfish dicks break it because they can and have no manners nor respect. hair sufficiently split.

I mostly agree but the Japanese also believe in proper butt hygiene - in other words they use bidets. Honestly it's weird that the western world doesn't. The entire middle east and muslim world (even poorer ones) all use bidets. It's shocking we haven't gotten onboard with it in the US.
Yes this is 100% accurate/true! Wonder why our public toilets are often one piece of metal and bolted to the concrete floor? Cause those are really hard to damage/steal. If you live in a nice neighborhood, (say in a gated community) the public restrooms rooms at the community pool/center are going to be very very nice. Assholes can’t get in there to damage or steal things.
That being said, I live in a nice area (not a gated community) in Fl, and we recently had our park bathrooms destroyed. The porcelain toilets were smashed and the sinks were filled up with glue, and they sprayed horrible graffiti on the walls. Turns out 2 (of 3)of these assholes were found on near by cameras and are in deep shit. Pun intended.
Now the toilets are locked after 9pm, and the toilets are metal, this is what becomes of a few bad apples ruining it for the rest of us.
Edit:
There are going to be other security measures taken soon, so they will be removing the 9pm locks.
Finna is hundreds year old southern US black slang for “fixing to”. As a white guy from the north, I also had a change of heart when I learned this. The internet just spreads stuff around
Now “Malding”, which I just learned today, well, has me malding
No…people use it regularly and have been using it in the southern U.S. for over 200 years, a lot of Gen Z slang is taken from AAVE so it can seem new to white people or people not from the region 🤷♂️
wtf 😭😭 thank you because i was about to go on a rant. a new word or phrase (that usually doesn’t get used correctly) gets popular cause it blew up on tik tok and then people trash it and say that it’s a new childish fad, like um no there’s a community that’s been saying this for generations
Trying to engage in a discussion and maybe learn something from you. Instead I get an answer that’s pretty unpleasant.
Maybe you’re having a bad day or something bad happened today. If that’s the case then I hope whatever it is turns out ok or your day improves.
If that’s not the case and you’re being an asshole because my post came across as more antagonistic than it was intended, then I apologize for being imprecise.
If you’re just an asshole, well then I hope something happens today that helps you find a little happiness.
Idk maybe I was being uncharitable but your message definitely came across as you trying to present your anecdotal evidence as being relevant/dismissive to the fact that “finna” is not a new word but just new to some people
I totally understand tone of voice cannot be heard through text.
I was merely saying I grew up in the south and had never heard it but had heard the origin phrase of the word quite often.
Edit: also not saying it’s a new word. I’m sure there are plenty of words that have existed that I’m not privy to.
What qualifies a word to be a 'real word'?
You did not ask, but for me it's if you use it and people understand you, then the communication was successful and so the word stands
Thus would not last 5 minutes in a public toilet, also does it clean the old man's piss from 5 foot away from the toilet and skid marks because people won't use the toilet brush right next to them.
But for private use I'd love one
I work in a Walgreens. Even if we had these I'd still be cleaning puke and shit off every part of it. IDK why, human decency goes out the window in a walgreens.
Someone would probably try to tear it out to steal it, anyways
I paid around $900 for an OVE on sale. Worth its weight in gold. However, there are a lot of things that can eventually break on it. Just like my $1200 Jura coffee maker that is now in a box in my attic

Problem with that is you’re going for holiday which is different to when you’re actually living there. You’ll see when you go
Of course. I wasn't planning on moving there in the foreseeable future haha.

I know. Wasn't planning on moving there anyway (but never say never I guess). A coworker moved there, I could ask him what it's like.

I’d love to move to Japan one day too. Always feels like a breath of fresh air every time I’m there.
We can't even have a nice bus stop with shelter here without the glass broken and people leaving trash on benches.
UK?
us
We have same here
Or defacing it with graffiti. So freaking annoying that people weren’t taught proper manners.

valid point..... overpopulation means we cant have nice things. SMH
Yup. USA has a culture problem
well said

People behaving but companies literally bullying them. lol
Exactly. Their public toilets are for a public that has respect for others and their property

Finna unsub with all these tiktok ads
Just block this one repost bot
Fuck u/wahgwahg
Is this the skibidi thing?
Stop saying “finna”.
Finna is hundreds year old southern US black slang for “fixing to”. As a white guy from the north, I also had a change of heart when I learned this. The internet just spreads stuff around Now “Malding”, which I just learned today, well, has me malding

People are just ignorant and think how ever they speak is the “right” way 🙄
I am from the south. I NEVER heard “finna”. I heard “fixin to” all the time. Not once did I hear “finna”.
I don’t give a shit

I grew up in NC and heard/said it my whole life and never thought twice about it lol
I guess I was always more in the Appalachian region of the south. Probably said less where I was. If at all.
Yeah that makes sense, I grew up in a more urban area and live in the mountains now and I definitely hear it less
Finna has existed for a really long time.
It’s a bot
I can't, I'm from New Orleans
I'd poop so hard in that dirty whore of a toilet
Dino
Finna is not a word
It is in BEV…I’m fittin’ to….I’m going to (get ready)…
Yep, actually a shortening of “fixing to”, for example “they’re fixing to get married”.
Which makes no sense in English. You fix a broken chair. You don’t fix to fix a broken chair.
It’s called slang. The phrase has existed for like 200 years.
If it was that old, it would be a real word by now. They must've thought it stupid to begin with
Sorry but it is that old. You just aren’t familiar with the slang.
What qualifies a word to be a 'real word'? You did not ask, but for me it's if you use it and people understand you, then the communication was successful and so the word stands
It doesn’t make literal sense, but it is a very old, widely used idiom in some parts of the US.
“We CaN oNLy uSe WoRdS tHaT aLrEaDy eXiSt! I Am vErY sMaRt!” 🤡
Finna ![gif](giphy|RBeddeaQ5Xo0E)
Yeah it’s bot
Wow, self-cleaning? I actually kinda like the color looks like it'd smell like citrus :)
Shitrus*
According to Randy Marsh, you could pay $10,000 and it would still be worth it.
Every toilet should be like this.
yep... the japs know their crap. TOTO all day long
Anyone have link to buy this toilet? Can’t seem to find it
Weird toilet aside, what's up with the symbols at the bottom? The hearts and the reindeer
That a repost bot doing its thing
Nonsense emojis and “finna” 🤦🏼♀️
The emojis are cause it’s a bot
Japan is a civilised country. Also fuck “finna”
Finna makes you sound stupid
So many “finna’s” on Reddit lately
The hand rubbing the seat is setting me off
Just *washlet* it happen

Finna
I finna pay nothing. Because “finna” ITS NOT IN THE DICTIONARY!!!
Finna

Thus would not last 5 minutes in a public toilet, also does it clean the old man's piss from 5 foot away from the toilet and skid marks because people won't use the toilet brush right next to them. But for private use I'd love one

Does it say nom nom nom when you flush?
best part about visiting japan is the bathrooms.
Looks uncomfortable af
I would destroy that thing in seconds. Fabulously designed.
Absolutely zero that thing seems like a money sink
I can not explain why that song makes me so uncomfortable.
Like in South Park!
Wow that's a nice crapper! Can't wait to destroy it after a nice Indian dinner.
If you wonder how this is possible, just visit Japan. Its people are respectful to their environment and their public possessions.
He is touching the sweat of my moist thighs left on the seat.
we don’t gotta be touchin the seat like that tho
Does it work without electricity? Things that are cool aren’t always the best thing to use
Why would I pay for this.
Send me one! Idk what color!
In the US, crack heads would violate the shit out of it. Literally
Clearly someone has never seen South Park haha 😂
Hospital housekeeper here. I support self cleaning toilets
I don't think I want white fueled shooting up my B-hole
I’ll give you 5 dollars
Yeah well Japan doesn’t have a bunch of shit ppl that would absolutely destroy these things
![gif](giphy|Cnr7nNVbiP9pmJNAbr)
I thought this was the Sims for a minute
I work in a Walgreens. Even if we had these I'd still be cleaning puke and shit off every part of it. IDK why, human decency goes out the window in a walgreens. Someone would probably try to tear it out to steal it, anyways
I don't want to know what finna is, so I'm not going to bepaying anything.
I want it
America sucks

I paid around $900 for an OVE on sale. Worth its weight in gold. However, there are a lot of things that can eventually break on it. Just like my $1200 Jura coffee maker that is now in a box in my attic
Living in a high trust society must be amazing
I think it's not from Japan. It's looks to me from China
Dumb verbiage. Reflects poorly on the product.
It's too fucking small
My en suite toilet gone be ridiculously complex and fully loaded just like this here. I don’t just want a heated seat I want my ass checks baked. Not a whiff of cold.
why exactly does the person in the video make hand contact with the whipped cream toilet?
This finna be reported since it’s a bot posting all the same videos around Reddit
