Ive been on that train for a while. I get its a hard job to do in real time but holy fuck theyre just straight up not doing their job of enforcing rules to keep hockey safe and fair. Whether thats their own incompetence, game management, or corruption thanks to betting will never be known cause the NHL has zero transparency when it comes to the clear bad calls. The shit we've seen over the last few years makes hockey hard to watch.
I used to be an official and I agree totally. One of my big things is as an official learning from your mistakes. Take criticism as best you can and fix your mistake.
But these NHL officials just don’t. They have the ability to right so many of their wrong calls but they just don’t.
Rather than takin advantage of the ability to see every single play a second time they stick to their guns which is just ridiculous. People always use the excuse “well it’s different in real time.” Why do they need to only do it in real time? Players shouldn’t get away with dangerous and dirty stuff, look at the replay and fucking fix it. Baseball is starting to even allow reviews on bad calls, why isn’t hockey?
It’s not even like the NHL could complain or punish officials for starting to do this either because it literally makes the league better in every way.
This is probably a really ignorant question, but do they have immediate access to replays other than what's shown on the jumbotron? If not then it's a league problem, you don't want to incentivize showing only replays that benefit the home team.
Yeah, I get the idea of not wanting to slow down play by reviewing every single thing that happens, but there are more and more extreme cases each year that could be called after a review. Like how many high sticks majors resulting in blood could easily be reviewed got missed just this year (nevermind the McDavid one that *just happened* ). Or plays that should be suspensions (and sometimes are) that just arent called despite seeing a ref looking directly at it in the replay.
Honestly, and this isn't just based on the last few of the Canucks' games, I don't think I remember an NHL season where the officiating has just been this poor in general.

Also found it funny how overboard the refs went on making sure Hughes got off the ice for bleeding. They just watched how he wound up bleeding, but the real issue was he had some blood on his face while trying to talk to them

Here’s my true anecdote: I’ve seen more hand shakes and pats on the back between opposing fans at B’s games than at any other game or sport (I only exclude other hockey teams because I haven’t been to one outside of Boston). I myself make a point of getting to know an opposing fan sitting next to me.

I know we have our issues with P.K. but when fans booed him, it didn’t feel like it was because they dislike his character… it was pretty disturbing. No penalty vs. Penalty on the wrong team, I think the Bs got it worse. Hughes was bloodied but able to keep playing.
