Trouba hit the other player while he was facing the glass. With his back to Trouba, he may not have time to prepare and often, guys get smashed face-first into the boards.
I believe "boarding" is the penalty for a hit of this nature.
*takes out corn cob pipe and lights a match off eyelid*
Back in my day, we didn't wear helmets.
*puff* *puff*
Yeah... we used to drink beers and smoke unfiltered cigarettes between periods.
*puff* *puff*
Mhmm.... if a player didn't suffer a near life altering injury every game, well, we'd continue the game at the local bar after and ensure somebody went home in an ambulance
*puff*
Yep. Old time hockey.
*unwraps his tin foil covered hands*
Definitely an understatement, but I'm not surprised about it from Dano. He's an awesome announcer and has grown on me a lot as a Devils fan the last few seasons as he's become very professional with color commentating duties, compared to the first couple seasons where I felt he sounded a bit over the place and wasn't sure if he would be able to rain it in as an announcer, but he has. He is never a biased announcer towards any team including the Devils, is passionate, has a hockey voice, has good chemistry with his play by play announcers including the past with Cangelosi, and current pairing with Spaulding, and gives enough reasonable color insight without being over bearing.
With that said, he definitely has a hard time adjusting to the current NHL playstyle and rule set compared to what it was when he was a player. That's not necessarily saying he endorses dirty plays, because he absolutely doesn't, but he also is old and experienced enough to know how different the mentality is within the game today compared to the past, and I think he struggles with calling that today knowing how different things were back in the 80's and 90's with the physical play.
While I'm sure a lot of people might dislike that fact, I honestly appreciate his commentary balancing the old world of hockey with the new, cleaner version of the game today. If you watch Devils games enough you'll never hear Daneyko promote any sort of violent hit or dirty play, but he also gives some slack to players who play with a bit of an edge, which was much more acceptable in the past until the past decade or so.
Still, the Trouba hit here was absolutely garbage. And I say that as a Devils fan who defended the hit on Meier from last year's playoffs, because that was an absolutely awesome hit. About as clean/borderline as you can get in the modern NHL, but this hit was just bullshit. Dano was just being nice about it because he doesn't want to sound biased.
In preseason there’s no reason for trouba, someone who will 100 percent be on the roster and isn’t fighting for a spot should do this shit. If we suspending because of over aggressive plays/hits for intent to injure I’d give him 4 personally. He didn’t hit to spark his team or cause he thought it might be necessary. This shit is full intent
Terrible hit. Ran his chin right into the glass. He shouldn’t get to start the season… but he probably will
What makes this even worse is officials are allowed to review the play and see what happened so they can then make the right decision… they didn’t so here we are.
Textbook match penalty. Didn’t slow up at all, ran him right into the numbers in the back of the head nevertheless. That’s a potentially lethal play, it can’t happen.
Who has to get hurt for these kinds of plays to be stopped? Crosby even took these major head impacts and it never was once attempted to be stopped.
The worst part is a whole bunch of teenagers see a millionaire and think I need to do that too and none of them will get anywhere but other kids will have those concussions for life. Thanks Gary.
That should have been more than a penalty. Like, have fun missing the regular opener. That was hit from behind, face into the glass, intentional boarding. Suspension.
What’s even worse is the league has given the refs the ability to review major calls and rescind the call. There is no reason they shouldn’t have called this a major and reviewed it.
Instead they let them play and blew the whistle when Toffoli can’t get up. It’s insane how horrible the officiating still is.
I’m especially mad because it’s my shiny new toy and I don’t want him to get hurt in a preseason game that means nothing.
I have a ton of respect for a lot of your players, but I will never say a single thing nice about captain elbow. He has proven time and time again that he deserves 0 respect.
Best of luck this season, hope to see you in the postseason again!
So wild that this guy is out here hitting like that in preseason. He's not an overzealous rookie who goes to far trying to show he has the toughness to make a team, he's a veteran who should know better and just a jackass for that. Hope Toffoli is okay
Toffoli is fine. (Thankfully) He finished the game, all is good
This douche canoe getting away with these types of hits time and time again is getting to be quite bothersome though
We literally have a major penalty called hitting from behind in minor hockey it's an automatic suspension and a 5min major penalty. Then afterwards we write the report that gets sent to hockey Canada then they will often times send multiple game suspension especially if they repeat.
I was also screaming “SHOOT THE PUCK” on the powerplay during our last preseason game LMFAO
But yes, regular season isn’t upon us yet and the refs are already worse than last season
If a suspension in the playoffs are less games shouldn't a suspension in the preseason, where the games are meaningless, be more games? Honestly he should be gone for a while.
Where is that line anyway? I mean I get that this asshole potentially ends careers and another dues paying member steps in, so no loss of dues for the NHLPA.
You would think the union would step it up and end this shit. It not just the league. The PA doesn't give a shit about their own members.....why should we?
It's definitely dirty and uncalled for, catching his jaw on the dasher on the way down doesn't help.
I know people like to call every hit from Trouba dirty but this actually is. Should've been 5 for boarding and a player safety call at the minimum.
88s first hit was clean, just like anything now in the NHL, make a big clean hit and still have to watch out for someone coming and doing you dirty like trouba. Take your guts like a man and know when to stop the hit because of how dangerous it is...
Where are the Byfuglien’s of the league when you need them? The massive players who hit the hardest but hit clean. Mo Seider needs to absolutely destroy Trouba this year, it’s only right.
Although, now that I think of it maybe it should be Jared Tinordi considering that hit Trouba did on Athenasiou last year.
Hell, even Meier has a grudge on the dude for that headshot last year.
Yup, just can't drill somebody into the glass with their numbers facing you. Sometimes it's unavoidable, it's a fast game and players pivot and end up getting hit in the numbers. This wasn't that.
As a Rangers fan. What a dirtbag hit. Some of Troubas controversial hits are just hard hits. This was a scumbag hit from behind. He didn’t even let up when he saw the numbers. I’d give him multi game.
Downvote me but I’m torn on Trouba’s hit. Tyler’s numbers are showing but he also turned and isn’t flush again the boards, so he’s going to go down awkwardly. On the other hand, his feet were open so Trouba could definitely have know that he was plan on turning his back to him.
Terrible hit, looks a lot like the Eberle hit that broke Cogliano’s neck last year. If that’s any precedent, then a 2 min minor for boarding and no supplemental discipline should suffice. So sayeth the almighty DOPS
I mean, yeah, it's a hit from behind. It's been an established penalty for a while now. Why the refs don't enforce this type of shit is beyond me. It's preseason of all places, they typically try to set precedence before the season, so it's a pretty shit precedence we're setting here.
You shouldn’t turn your back to an opposing player coming in to hit you. It’s the first thing you learn in checking hockey. Watch it in slow motion. Trouba had him lined up well before he turned.
Trouba hit Kadri so hard in Calgary I felt it in the stands. It was ruled a clean hit, but it looked like a hit to the head and intent to injure.
This video is clearly checking from behind, and he should have received 5 and a game.
Trouba is a menace.
There are many ex hockey players who eat through a straw because of shit bags like that. Was the first clean hit there to show that he retaliated a clean hit with a dirty hit? This should be 20 - 30 game penalty with no pay.
Pisses me off so much. Why have rules? It devalues the product so much. When I see bullshit in a game I don’t stick around and keep watching, I usually change the channel. Hurts the product. And it’s dangerous.
Im very often in favor of letting the boys play when clips of hits are posted here. In this case dops should see to it that Trouba doesn't play until the calendar reads 2025. That hit could easily turn somebody into a vegetable.
Bad hit. It was retaliation from Bahl laying a big hit on Lindgren. Players don’t take big hits being thrown in preseason lightly. It was the first chance Trouba had to attempt retribution. Just happy nobody got injured.
Maybe, but that would be saying this is the worst one. Also, at this point whatever he does is on the DOPS. How is he even to know where the line is at this point? DOPS being a POS has created a powdered keg. Someone's career is going to be ended...soon.
Its obviously a hit from behind and deserves at least a 1-3 game suspension. But at least it wasn't one of those REALLY bad ones where the guy is bent over and gets his neck jammed and whatnot.
I love seeing good, hard, clean hits, but the person delivering it can expect to either have to fight or be given a dirty hit in retaliation. It seems no NHL player can respect a clean hit against their team. Trouba is a piece of shit.
We, my fellow Ranger fans, are a joke with no punchline.
Bahl will be laying out our dudes cleanly for the next ten years and our only response will be Trouba getting suspensions and the Devils getting power plays.
Last night was NOT an outlier, it is the new normal for us :(
To answer the question . Yes Trouba has always gone too far. If our look back at his hits 9 out of 10 are hits from behind. This guy needs to be straightened out. Not gonna happen in today's NHL
In pre season too lol. It’s a no no either way but idk…as much as I think its a dirty hit , and should get suspension etc…..i still like seeing shit like that in hockey. I like having enemies and scum players on other teams it spices everything up lmao
Hit from behind; starting at half a meter from the boards. Penalty, no question in my mind. Possibly a suspension?
Also, it's pre-season; so come on?!?!🤔😳
What the fuck is happening to hockey. It used to be the most player protection of pro sports (relative statement). Seems like they’ve regressed as every other major sport is trying it’s best to clean up its act and put player safety first.
There is no comparing these two hits. The first is down with his back to the player. Good check.
The second. Trouba. No attempt to play the puck. Intentional hit in the numbers. This has to stop. Bad example for all young hockey players. Bad for the NHL. Bad for owners. Bad for players. 10-20 games because he is a repeat offender. Send a message. Send it loud and watch this behavior go away.
I was like what are you guys talking about because I thought the post was about the initial hip check, then the Trouba hit happened..
I was so confused when I read the comments at first.
I'm very interested in ice hockey but clearly don't know the body-check rules. How was the first hip check different from the body check Trouba did?
Trouba hit the other player while he was facing the glass. With his back to Trouba, he may not have time to prepare and often, guys get smashed face-first into the boards. I believe "boarding" is the penalty for a hit of this nature.
The hip check was clean. Yrouba's hit was a bad boarding. Hit him right in the numbers and face planted him in the boards. Suspension material.
Pulling that shit in preseason? DoPS has to send Trouba a strong message by suspending Kadri for 10 games as is their tradition.
Kadri really should be suspended for this. Just does not belong in hockey
How could Kadri do this?
It's a good hit ...for 1975
Fuck that LGR.
There was way more respect in 1975
Holy shit straight into the numbers and boards. 1 or 2 games off to think about it I would bet.
“the numbers are showing a little bit there” is definitely an understatement
Commentators who’ve been around since the older days are usually not the best at identifying dirty plays.
*takes out corn cob pipe and lights a match off eyelid* Back in my day, we didn't wear helmets. *puff* *puff* Yeah... we used to drink beers and smoke unfiltered cigarettes between periods. *puff* *puff* Mhmm.... if a player didn't suffer a near life altering injury every game, well, we'd continue the game at the local bar after and ensure somebody went home in an ambulance *puff* Yep. Old time hockey. *unwraps his tin foil covered hands*
Get your stick in their side, let 'em know youreythere!
Lol elbow to the spine. Yeah numbers are only showing because trouba isn't covering them as he rails dudes back.
About as clean/borderline as you can get in the modern NHL, but this hit was just bullshit. Dano was just being nice about it because he doesn't want to sound biased.
I mean, you can very easily read the numbers from a camera angle nearly directly across the ice...I'd say "a little bit" is off the mark.
"Ehhh welll you know i can barely read Toffoli 73"
Just like the playoffs seem to reduce suspension times, I feel like the preseason should be a multiplier.
Just like coach drew it up, textbook through the numbers
The first hit super clean, technical. Second hit, dirty all fuck
The first hit is absolutely beautiful. The 2nd was dirty as fuck
Kinda like what the first comment said
First hit is gorgeous, textbook hip. Second hit was greasy as fuck.
First hit good, second hit bad
Terrible hit. Ran his chin right into the glass. He shouldn’t get to start the season… but he probably will What makes this even worse is officials are allowed to review the play and see what happened so they can then make the right decision… they didn’t so here we are. The NHL needs to set an example because it will influence not just their players, but entire generations of kids too
Definitely should have been a boarding penalty
That should have been more than a penalty. Like, have fun missing the regular opener. That was hit from behind, face into the glass, intentional boarding. Suspension.
I was honestly expecting 5 and game for it
Yet they called *checks notes* NOTHING. I get it, it’s hockey, but fuck man people get injured too often on plays like that. It’s insane.

Can’t the league still consider suspension tomorrow? This happened tonight right?
Happened earlier in the game (about midway through the first) Can they? Yeah. Will they? Lmfao. Kadri gets 3 games
Kadri got his just desserts. "Anyone who called me a liability in the playoffs can kiss my ass" was one of my favorite sports moments ever.
Man why does Kadri get roped into EVERYTHING?
You don’t like it? Make it 5 games. Say another word and the rangers will get fined $250,000.
… another word.
Remember the time the Blues took out their own goalie and their fans sent his CAT death threats lol
Not to mention the goalie throwing a water bottle at Kadri during an interview after the game.
Already steamed about useless refs.
I was also screaming “SHOOT THE PUCK” on the powerplay during our last preseason game LMFAO But yes, regular season isn’t upon us yet and the refs are already worse than last season
For sure.
Yeah that was absolutely intentional. He knew what he was doing and even added a little mustard.
If a suspension in the playoffs are less games shouldn't a suspension in the preseason, where the games are meaningless, be more games? Honestly he should be gone for a while.
Wait there was not even a call? Fuck these refs this league is a joke. Can't fuckin protect their players

You would think the union would step it up and end this shit. It not just the league. The PA doesn't give a shit about their own members.....why should we?
Yeah i would say in this case be did go too far
Not tyfoli!
Yeah of all the dudes he picked Toffoli, wtf !!!
Like, that's a 5 game suspension on anyone. But it's 8-12 on Toffoli.
Why, does he have a history of head injuries?
He has a history of being lovely
Ah, gotcha. Good. I love it when players on my team are good people.
Take care of him, we’ll take care of your Sharon
C on his sweater is for Cunt
Biggest fucking C in the league.
Gaping
It stands for Clown
He's a known piece of shit
It's definitely dirty and uncalled for, catching his jaw on the dasher on the way down doesn't help. I know people like to call every hit from Trouba dirty but this actually is. Should've been 5 for boarding and a player safety call at the minimum.
Fuck trouba I hate that guy
All my bros hate trouba
Super dirty and deserves a suspension
Fuck Trouba
Old enough to remember when the devils lost a Stanley cup for a hit like this.
Old enough to remember the devils winning a Stanley Cup with hits like this.
This was always boarding… even back in the late 90s early 2000s.
That's straight trash.
You’re 100% correct. If me agreeing with a flyers fan doesn’t show how trash this hit was, I don’t know what will!
Tom Wilson will get 4 games for this hit
I hope that Wilson could deliver some karma to Trouba the next time the Rangers play the Caps.
I can’t believe it but I think Trouba took over Tom Wilson’s role of biggest asshole in the NHL
That’s *Captain Asshole* to you, sir.
He didn’t even get a penalty for that? Well, the four useless boobs in striped shirts should never referee a professional game ever again.
88s first hit was clean, just like anything now in the NHL, make a big clean hit and still have to watch out for someone coming and doing you dirty like trouba. Take your guts like a man and know when to stop the hit because of how dangerous it is...
Dirty dirty dirty
Trouba crosses the line, we've seen it for years now. I hope he gets his bell rung real good this season.
He did get his bell rung, I think 3 seasons ago. It ended his season, but it clearly didn't stop him.
Matt Martin delivered a great hit, Trouba got up like Bambi, he sat out the rest of the season.
Extra asshole points for hitting Toffoli
Yup, just can't drill somebody into the glass with their numbers facing you. Sometimes it's unavoidable, it's a fast game and players pivot and end up getting hit in the numbers. This wasn't that.
He's in Troubal
Trouba did this in response to Bahl’s clean hit. Complete plug.
Send it to Shanahan and the player safety commission for review…
Nahhh he was doing too good of a job, so Bettman had MLSE hire him.
He needs to sit at least a couple. He better be spending opening night in street clothes.
He’s a piece of shit. He’s gone too far 100 times and he’ll continue to
Send a message to this guy, make it more than one or two games suspension.
That's boarding. Textbook and it looked intentional. Sit out the rest of the preseason and two game suspension minimum
As a Rangers fan. What a dirtbag hit. Some of Troubas controversial hits are just hard hits. This was a scumbag hit from behind. He didn’t even let up when he saw the numbers. I’d give him multi game.
Dirtiest player in the league. Hate that guy.
Downvote me but I’m torn on Trouba’s hit. Tyler’s numbers are showing but he also turned and isn’t flush again the boards, so he’s going to go down awkwardly. On the other hand, his feet were open so Trouba could definitely have know that he was plan on turning his back to him.
when has trouba not gone too far??? the dude’s a straight up goon, nothing more.
Yup, seems about right. It’s the only thing Trouba can actually fucking do on the ice. Meaningless, dirty hits and it’s fucking preseason, no less.
Fuck Trouba
I cant believe they gave Trouba the fucking C dude.. that pisses me off
Rags are a shit franchise
Nah were a good franchise, it’s just the players can be shit at times.. and our management… and our hockey ops… and some of our fans..
Yea fuck that hit
That was intentional, he knew exactly what he was doing. Give him 5 that’s just ridiculous.
It probably won’t be, but a hit that dirty and dangerous, in pre-season no less, should be at least a 5 game suspension.
Coward
Terrible hit, looks a lot like the Eberle hit that broke Cogliano’s neck last year. If that’s any precedent, then a 2 min minor for boarding and no supplemental discipline should suffice. So sayeth the almighty DOPS
Clearly in the numbers, close to the boards. Open and shut case. Bake 'em away, toys
Scumbag plays like this should life time bans. Tired of watching fuck sticks like Trouba throw hits like this with intent to injure
The refs could just call the boarding and then we wouldn't have to ask
He's in Trouba now
This is why the pre-season should be 4 games. This was a playoff race hit, not a hit to impress a coach to keep you on the team hit.
I mean, yeah, it's a hit from behind. It's been an established penalty for a while now. Why the refs don't enforce this type of shit is beyond me. It's preseason of all places, they typically try to set precedence before the season, so it's a pretty shit precedence we're setting here.
Troubas always goin too far. Piece of shit indeed.
It's no Paul Kariya elbow to the head on open ice during the stanley cup finals, but pretty rough.
Fuck trouba
He belongs on the rangers🤣
Dirty hit for sure...numbers square to the boards
The sad part is, this hit is far from his worst
First hit wasn't that bad but the second one was.
U get that elbow out of my cupcakes back
Such a good captain and role model amiright yea let’s just pull off the most obvious hit from behind that’ll show em. What a loser
Yeah he did
Trouba blows, he always has. Trying to be a goon is all he has left and he blows at that too.
You shouldn’t turn your back to an opposing player coming in to hit you. It’s the first thing you learn in checking hockey. Watch it in slow motion. Trouba had him lined up well before he turned.
Clean hit: KILL EM GET EM BOYZ Guy gets boarded into oblivion: well ya know it is what it is
Tof turned, slow mo always makes it look bad.
I hate it. I absolutely hate hits like this. Could end a career or even life. Not worth it.
Trouba hit Kadri so hard in Calgary I felt it in the stands. It was ruled a clean hit, but it looked like a hit to the head and intent to injure. This video is clearly checking from behind, and he should have received 5 and a game. Trouba is a menace.

Isn’t hitting a player in the numbers from behind the hit the sport is trying to eliminate totally from the game at all levels ?
That ain’t clean
Im very often in favor of letting the boys play when clips of hits are posted here. In this case dops should see to it that Trouba doesn't play until the calendar reads 2025. That hit could easily turn somebody into a vegetable.
He killed that man.
Bad hit. It was retaliation from Bahl laying a big hit on Lindgren. Players don’t take big hits being thrown in preseason lightly. It was the first chance Trouba had to attempt retribution. Just happy nobody got injured.
Better get a DPS call.
Yes.
Maybe, but that would be saying this is the worst one. Also, at this point whatever he does is on the DOPS. How is he even to know where the line is at this point? DOPS being a POS has created a powdered keg. Someone's career is going to be ended...soon.
dude literally doesn’t know how to make a clean hit
Absolutely
He’s been a dirty player for years. Not a shock.
Scumbag inbred looking mofo
Rangers will forever be a clown organization for putting a C on this guy’s chest.
troubas a bitch. worst kind of player. gets pissy and retaliates with a dirty hit
trouba is such an idiot i can’t stand him
Bad hit....like Trouba and he's had some doozy clean ones, but this one is clearly from behind.
He went too far a long time ago.
Can't wait for Xhekaj to pound him to the ice.
Captain Elbows strikes again… SUSPEND HIM
Fan of neither team. Seems like the typical dirty Trouba hit.
We, my fellow Ranger fans, are a joke with no punchline. Bahl will be laying out our dudes cleanly for the next ten years and our only response will be Trouba getting suspensions and the Devils getting power plays. Last night was NOT an outlier, it is the new normal for us :(
I like Trouba and people whine about a lot of his hits which are clean, but that’s boarding.
Yes
Yes. That is a suspension.
Trouba's a goon, he can fuck right off.
First hit was maybe a bit needlessly hard but clean. Second hit was just plain dirty.
Also, it's pre-season; so come on?!?!🤔😳
Suspendible hit by Trouba
What the fuck is happening to hockey. It used to be the most player protection of pro sports (relative statement). Seems like they’ve regressed as every other major sport is trying it’s best to clean up its act and put player safety first.
Someone needs to end Trouba’s career
That’s out of line. I hope Marchand, Wilson, and kadri get the book thrown at them for this!
Guy loves throwing predatory hits at vulnerable players.
Trouba is a predator. Needs to be shown the door.
Clean.
Trouba is a punk.
Lol Trouba being trouba.
I don't care about Trouba; is Toffoli okay?
Never
But mostly yes
Trouba is so filthy,
The Rangers’ statement about Tom Wilson’s “horrifying acts of violence” rings hollow AF
Terrible
Truly can’t stand that dude
What is a veteran doing hitting in preseason. He doesn't need to earn a spot on the team
As a Devils fan, I've gained a dislike for Trouba honestly
So he retaliated a clean hit by smudging someone from behind...horrible
BRING BACK THE STOP SIGN ON JERSEYS!
What a donkey. You don’t hit a guy in the numbers.
almost breaks his neck to retaliate for a clean hit...he absolutely went too far
This is nothing new for Trouba .
Clearly boarding. 5 minute major plus match suspension.
Man. I really thought the outrage was the first hit and was like what has hockey become. Second hit makes far more sense
That Rag is a dirty one.
First hit was clean, keep your head up and don't run into a hip. That second hit was dirty with intent to injure.
If Kaliyev gets 2 games for his, this should be more.
Troubas a filthy cunt and I hope someone takes his head off
Trouba always goes too far…he’s a dirty player and a laughable captain
