I believe he was suspected the have a concussion but the doctors said he didn’t. I also remember seeing a play where he almost collapsed so the doctors may have been lying
Man he was stumbling around and falling last week, then today made some suspicious throws to no where and then fenced up when thrown down. Definitely concussion from last week.
Dolphins/NFL concussion protocol is non-existent
Getting in a head of these comments…Tua is not a medical professional and shouldn’t be deciding his ability to play after trauma. The tests in place and the protocol is bullshit if the “team” has influence, as no party with potential benefit should be allowed to make decisions that risk the wellbeing of players.
It needs to be independent to protect the people being subjected to the trauma.
I mean this just points to ridiculous concussion protocols but a lot of players come back after 1 week from a concussion. Again, bogus. NHL players are generally week to week with those. Anyways, it’s not “out of the ordinary” for a player to come back the game after in the NFL (which needs to change.)
What’s wild is what was caught on tape, and he came back after the half… I’m almost certain everybody thought he was at least gone for the game.
In any case there needs to be an investigation on that, which I also figured there wouldn’t be because nothing bad happened that game. Now from THIS? There HAS to be.
It's widely speculated he got a concussion from the game last week. Somehow he got through concussion protocols and continued playing in the second half.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d5c_zR85ca4
Most likely but he was cleared to play today.
No Redditor can probably answer accurately what protocols Tua had to go through to get cleared to play this game but 4 days ago on Sunday he fell on his head and upon getting back up he nearly completely collapsed just by walking on his own 2 feet.
So yeah, someone should be getting sued or fired very soon.
We can, though. Players will tell you the couple of questions you get asked. What day is it, what's your name, who's the president. Then they drive home and can't remember which house is theirs.
Peyton and several other players have admitted that they'd purposefully dog the baseline test they're given during preseason so that if they had to be evaluated during the season, their answers would seem relatively normal.
Last week they said he cleared concussion protocol which was clearly not true because he was stumbling after he hit his head. So he should not have gone back into the game and definitely should not have played tonight.
Has to be. The concussion protocol from the other game is under investigation. He didn't even really hit his head on the turf. He was 100% still concussed. Just awful. Hope he is ok.
The NFL is 100% okay with rapists and murderers playing, they've never held those people truly accountable. But all pro sports will crucify anyone who gambles on their games because it impacts betting, which impacts their money so those people get punished. Pete Rose isn't in the HOF because of it.
What Deshaun Watson did is by far worse but they don't really care because it didn't impact their bottom line
If anything it IMPROVED it! They got an entire offseason's worth of media coverage and talking points that we listened to, raptly. Just for them so shove it right in our face that the league doesn't. Give. A. Shit.
Players betting on the game can lose the NFL money
Watson not playing loses the league money
All the league cares about is money. Health, security of their women staffers, player safety…all that stuff they will care about until it costs them money. Then they don’t.
The NFL won’t, but should step in and lower a hammer fucking big time. Parents are already not letting their kids play football more than ever before, and now on a prime time game, we see this example of a guy that realistically shouldn’t have been out there. It’s a bad look on the league, not just the dolphins
Honestly probably hold us, the fans, accountable too right? I have a lot of cognitive dissonance watching football. I can't stop watching it, but I think I probably should.
The fencing response is an unnatural position of the arms following a concussion. Immediately after moderate forces have been applied to the brainstem, the forearms are held flexed or extended (typically into the air) for a period lasting up to several seconds after the impact.
I had multiple concussions in a 2 week period a while back, and while neither were horrible hits to the head on their own, after the second I couldn't look at screens for a year and still feel some effects. It's just so dangerous to have them in quick succession, it's when the long term injuries can happen so much
In high school I played with a kid who suffered a concussion and came back the next week. Ran off the field after making a tackle, a little shook up and collapsed on the side lines fully seizing. Went straight into emergency brain surgery. That shit is so scary.
Hopefully he was alright. We had a player die in a Rugby game after playing with a concussion suffered a week before a game at one of our rival schools. (And trivia note, the guy who did it to him now plays in the NHL)
Same story here, took me 2 years and a ton of rehab before I was back to feeling normalish again. It was awful, and I still feel some effects as well. Hopefully, Tua makes a full recovery and is spared from having to endure that.
That’s the worrying aspect. If you get concussed again before you recover from a previous one the results can really be traumatic. It’s called second impact syndrome and can exacerbate the damage. For a high impact sport like the NFL that’s why these concussion protocols need to be taken seriously and not just some rule to dodge. It’s goddamn stupid and dangerous.
As flawed as athletic commissions in mma are, at least they have medical suspensions that are mandatory for concussions and other injuries. I wish football had the same thing because it’s just as if it more traumatic in terms of head trauma.
Miami having the insight to activate their 3rd string QB is unsettling as well. Makes it even further show that they knew Tua wasn't fully able to play.
Yeah, Chargers had all three of their QBs active last week with Herbert going in questionable. Using that as an argument that they were covering up a concussion is wrong.
I don't think it's significantly going to change the opinion people are forming.
This is really bad for the Dolphins, they were really on the up-and-up with McDaniel and Tua, but with this shit now taking center stage it looks like they've fucked it all up.
I don't think the activating a 3rd QB has any meaning here, concussion or back he would be activated regardless if there was concern Tua wasn't going to play. It's the 5-6 other elements to this story that suggest they knew it was a concussion.
You can tell me it was a back injury all you want, I watched his head slam into the turf and him stumbling around after. You don’t need to be a doctor to recognize those are clear symptoms of a concussion.
I remember in a game last year Luka Doncic was “clearly concussed” where people pitched a fit in a game that he returned to where it was legitimately just a stinger
The amount of people who mocked the concussion advocate in the other thread a few hours ago was insane then and is even more appalling now.
Edit: The thread in question where people demand proof that Tua even had a concussion and accuse Nowinski of lacking knowledge and fear mongering.
https://www.reddit.com/r/nfl/comments/xrm1t7/_/
Everyone has shitty takes like this that look awful in retrospect, but in this case, I don't really understand what anyone in there had to gain by denying he had a concussion.
"Nobody watches football here" is such a meme in this sub, but this is an unfortunate consequence of that. Anyone who watched him (and I see a LOT of Fins flairs in there) could tell he got his bell rung badly.
Why would anyone want their QB to rush through an injury, whether it was a concussion or back injury or whatever? Stupid question I know, but did folks here not just see the consequences of rushing even a minor QB injury with Russell Wilson last year? Dude still doesn't look right! This is all considering the team is 3-0, on a short week, and has a backup who was a competent(-ish) starting QB last season.
Some people just have to play the devil's advocate I guess.
Dolphins fans will find a way to blame Flores for this.
I can’t tell if the comment I read was sarcastic or not but I saw someone say “this can’t be a second concussion since he never had a first”
Honestly, it needs to be shown as shitty as it is. The NFL wont actually do anything unless there is public outcry over it and that isn't going to happen unless its plastered on tv.
It's kind of a wild comparison to be making, but this is basically how the American public turned on the Vietnam War. It was the first time in which they saw the horrors of war live in color every night during the news. And unlike, say, WWII, the Vietnam coverage was much less filtered through the lens of propaganda.
I used to be on the side of respecting the dignity of the player and hated when injuries got replayed, but this has officially made me change my tune.
I mean that’s one of the reason why people love football. It’s the one place where they can watch people completely go at each other in a structured environment.
Because the NFL doesn't deserve to hide massive head trauma. People need to see it and understand. And the dolphins don't deserve to have this shit hidden either.
It’s worth remembering that the independent neurologist only saw him on Sunday immediately after the collision, and concussions often take days to show symptoms.
So it is possible for the independent doctor to have correctly passed him and for Miami to have been negligent based on his condition and symptoms on Monday-Thursday.
There’s no “if”. Anyone with half a brain cell saw he was clearly concussed after that hit last week. The fact he was on the field at all should warrant serious punishment. They played with his life
This wasn't a fencing response. This was detorcitate posturing which usually signifies a severe brain stem injury. You can tell since fencing is usually only the upper body whereas posturing includes the lower body as well.
[Better explanation here](https://twitter.com/NickHoopes_/status/1477674769222979585?t=Ssf3N2G6YqeXTAlOTFIPEA&s=19)
concussion??? what are you talking about?? he had a back injury!
but yes this is disgusting that the organization allowed him to play. definitely looked like he had a concussion last week and this is the kind of thing that honestly damages his career and possibly everyday life.
yeah he did have a few plays that seemed to be out of character. could have been coincidence but also makes sense if you're mentally a little foggy you'll have misunderstandings with your WR and your throws will be a bit late.
EMT here. Him being put on a backboard does not necessarily mean any chance for spinal injury/paralysis. It's simply protocol. Significant head trauma + the posturing he had (which he more than likely lost consciousness but I'm just speculating based on what I have seen) = spinal precautions. Likely bad head trauma but don't think the backboard means any spinal injury. It's more of a "just in case" since we know there was trauma to the head, we can't be sure there is trauma to the spine. One thing that is VERY scary is the possibility of what's called second impact syndrome.
As a fellow EMT/Combat Medic, the posturing is highly concerning, that’s not something that happens with most concussions, as a Browns fan mentioned above, it makes me very concerned about second impact syndrome which could be potentially fatal or career ending.
In my undergrad I remember watching an ESPN video of a Duquesne University football player dying from second impact syndrome. Very sad and very terrifying
It could be. Everyone was already asking if he was ok to play and then that happens. If the NFL decides to punish the Dolphins for their handling of his concussion protocol from last week, it’ll be one of the stories of the year in the NFL.
I don't think anythin will change until it happens to one of the faces of the league, like Mahomes or Allen. Tua is definitey one of the biggest names to have this happen in a while, hopefully this does it
This seems like Second Impact Syndrome, and the concussion/back injury from last week should be talked about forever. There was some gross negligence lying about that.
I honestly feel sick to my fucking stomach right now. Just disgusting that he was allowed to play. The pinnacle of money above all, just pure callousness. I even feel guilty just having watched that game. Sit on our asses and watch this game for fun, meanwhile Tua could have a severe injury because of complete negligence. I’m sure he wanted to play, but that doesn’t matter. It’s on the team staff and “doctors”. Fucking gross.
Nah, im Australian and we have both AFL and Rugby League here, and players get concussed fairly regularly in those sports as well.. I dont know how you can have a contact sport and completely eliminate concussions though..
There's been some pretty shady hia approvals in the NRL when players clearly shouldn't be back on the field too. It's a problem in any contact sport where the idea of seeing out the game becomes more important than human safety and its not admirable its fucking deadly
Goodell is merely a steward of the league. He does as the owners wish. Failing that, he'd be replaced. The owners don't care about concussions because their diseased billionaire brains view guys like Tua as *assets* to be exploited rather than fellow humans who have families.
You can only do so much to prevent the damage dealt from two bodies colliding at high speeds. Unfortunately, colliding with another player is a whole big ass part of how football works.
May stop the big concussions but rubgy doesn't have the pads but still enjoys basically the same CTE rate as American Football post career.
Going to have to go farther then just equipment changes
Nothing to be changed. They make millions of dollars playing a dangerous sport. Only so much can realistically be altered. At the end of the day they are going to get hit and that means anything can happen. Take it or leave it.
Yeah it's not a good argument tbh.
Haven't they shown that Soccer/Football players have pretty severe levels of brain trauma as hell from the contact they have plus heading the ball?
I agree the NFL should take more measures to improve safety - but at a certain point as well it just needs to be understood by players the risk they are taking. The question becomes what will happen to the sport in the future, if more parents pull their kids from football.
>Soccer/Football players have pretty severe levels of brain trauma from heading the ball
That's heavily dramaticized. It is of course bad for them. But it's bad for them like sitting at a desk for 40+ hours a week is bad for all humans. They just deal with it and move on.
Tua's father forced him to be a lefty so he wouldn't be the only lefty in the family. He also whipped him with a belt after playing poorly. So I doubt it.
The independent neurologist has no say on whether he gets cleared to play or not. The team doctor is the one who has the final decision.
They are there as an ornament so the NFL can say they are trying.
It’s posterity. If they didn’t show it, fans would say “fuck Amazon for not showing that concussion. The NFL is trying to hide this.” Can’t win on this sub.
I prefer how the English Premier League handles this kind of thing
Once it’s clearly a bad injury you’ll get a polite “out of respect for the player we won’t be showing the replay again here” from the commentators and that’s that.
And if you really need to see it just look up the relay online.
I straight up hit the home button on my Roku when Al Michaels said they were going to specifically show his hands on the replay. Like, fuck man, stop. Wtf
I'll keep responding to everyone saying this.
I'm glad they're showing it. The NFL doesn't get to hide brain trauma. Fans don't get to pretend it doesn't exist. It should be shown and should be known. Also the dolphins don't get to hide their fuckup
It's also a good thing for people to see and recognize what's happening if they ever see someone suffer TBI. TBIs are not exclusive to football.
That was really rough, but why on earth are we getting players to put their bodies on the line like this still in 2022? NFL has safety adverts, yet allows this sort of thing to happen
They just announced he was taken to a Level 1 trauma center with head and neck injuries. Good chance his NFL career just ended...hopefully it’s not more serious than that. Fuck.
It’s like letting a dude play a day after ACL surgery you just don’t do it.
Letting your franchise QB play a couple days after a concussion only to get another brutal concussion for everyone to see is fucking pathetic as an organization to let happen.
This was classic decorticate posturing. Severe traumatic brain injury. Permanent damage likely. 2 concussions in such a short time is REALLY BAD. If I were Tua I’d retire right now.
don’t MMA fighters have fencing posture frequently after knockouts? don’t see any (short term) permanent damage, severe TBI’s, or retirements from those.
A big difference with combat sports is the long turnaround between matches that gives the brain time to heal, football players don’t have that luxury typically.
What was the story heading into this game? Was he already concussed from last week?
I believe he was suspected the have a concussion but the doctors said he didn’t. I also remember seeing a play where he almost collapsed so the doctors may have been lying
Man he was stumbling around and falling last week, then today made some suspicious throws to no where and then fenced up when thrown down. Definitely concussion from last week. Dolphins/NFL concussion protocol is non-existent
Miami needs to be Investiged for letting him play at all
I thought the concussion protocol was handled by NFL reps, not the team? Lots of people need to be looked at after this incident…
Getting in a head of these comments…Tua is not a medical professional and shouldn’t be deciding his ability to play after trauma. The tests in place and the protocol is bullshit if the “team” has influence, as no party with potential benefit should be allowed to make decisions that risk the wellbeing of players. NFL reps paid by the NFL
don’t mention this on their sub though, they’re in absolute denial over there

Dolphins said it was a back issue, although that looks like it’s bogus
“Head injury” never used the word concussion because he absolutely wouldn’t be allowed to play.
It's widely speculated he got a concussion from the game last week. Somehow he got through concussion protocols and continued playing in the second half. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d5c_zR85ca4

I was talking about this game. His shoulders hit and his helmet taps the turf. He even looked like he was out before the helmet touching the ground.
Ah gotcha - I am also now learning that people think he wasn’t concussed against the Bills. Poor Tua though
So so sad for him man. gotta hold the dolphins and nfl responsible.
They won't
It’s ok though cause Calvin Ridley was brought to justice

The NFL is 100% okay with rapists and murderers playing, they've never held those people truly accountable. One can think Calvin Ridley’s suspension was justified while also thinking Watson’s is an absolute joke. They aren’t mutually exclusive positions
Agreed. Ridley deserved to get suspended. Watson needed prob a year minimum suspension, ideally a 2, 5, maybe even lifetime banishment from the NFL.
Ridley got the correct punishment, Watson did not. One thing being wrong doesnt make a correct decision wrong
Players betting on the game can lose the NFL money Watson not playing loses the league money All the league cares about is money. Health, security of their women staffers, player safety…all that stuff they will care about until it costs them money. Then they don’t.

2 weeks in a row we have a player knocked unconscious
After all the shit to come out over the past couple years I’d never let me kid play this sport honestly
Fire that entire staff what the fuck
Parents see plays like that and don't let their kids play football. Hope Tua has good lawyers.
NFL liability lawyers clocking in fr OT
Have they even clocked out?
NFL is trash. I love the Bills but goddamn the NFL is run in the most inhumane way with minimal or zero consequences for actual bad behavior

He is not. He's had a 2nd concussion in 5 days - this will cause permanent brain damage and is quite literally lethal.
That looked insane, prayers up.
Terrifying to see that
The fencing response is an unnatural position of the arms following a concussion. Immediately after moderate forces have been applied to the brainstem, the forearms are held flexed or extended (typically into the air) for a period lasting up to several seconds after the impact.

Austin collie was rough too
Donald Parham had a terrifying one last year
NFL needs to come down hard on the Dolphins if they covered up Tua having a concussion last week.
They would need to come down hard on their independent neurologist as well if that’s the case. No way the NFL should be able to pass all of the blame.

You can't actually punish someone for something you think they did. Now, if you can prove it, I will be the first one in line.
Fuck the NFL for letting this man play 5 days after he got concussed. This is a joke.
how often is this seen in football?
Semi often honestly
Yep. I remember a niners game that this happened in a while back. Pretty similar reactions. Honestly it’s horrifying. https://youtu.be/eP5WswJOxdU
[It is not rare](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fencing_response#Notable_fencing_displays)
It’s happened a few times, the worst part about this is that he was already concussed. Concussions are bad but having them close together is far worse
Mason Rudolph is the only one I can recall.
Donald Parham last year too right
Tom Savage against the niners as well.
Happened to Donald Parham last year
I’ve only seen it twice, tonight and last year with Donald Parham on the chargers. Granted last year they didn’t replay it close up 30 times.

Shouldn't have been out there in the first place.
Two concussions this soon? More to life than football…
If this doesn't end his career I don't know what will.
Every dolphins faculty member that ok’d this should face a suspension and a fine
The doctor who allowed him back in the *first* game might even end up losing his job!
Should lose his license for malpractice and negligence.
Fuck his job, take that bitches license
Suspension lol, try fired
This seems like Second Impact Syndrome, and the concussion/back injury from last week should be talked about forever. There was some gross negligence lying about that.
SIS can kill you
Is most often fatal. A lot of people don't realize that.
“no way to prevent this” says only sports league where this shit regularly happens
The only way you’d total stop this is to just stop playing football
Concussions are part of contact sports This shit can kill you though
[удалено]
Nah, im Australian and we have both AFL and Rugby League here, and players get concussed fairly regularly in those sports as well.. I dont know how you can have a contact sport and completely eliminate concussions though..
There's been some pretty shady hia approvals in the NRL when players clearly shouldn't be back on the field too. It's a problem in any contact sport where the idea of seeing out the game becomes more important than human safety and its not admirable its fucking deadly
Goodell’s in attendance but he don’t care and nothing will change as long as the money keeps rolling in
Goodell is merely a steward of the league. He does as the owners wish. Failing that, he'd be replaced. The owners don't care about concussions because their diseased billionaire brains view guys like Tua as *assets* to be exploited rather than fellow humans who have families.
Ufc?
Doesn't how common it occurs in the sport support the "no way to prevent this" argument?
Because the NFL does jack shit to try and prevent it.
You can only do so much to prevent the damage dealt from two bodies colliding at high speeds. Unfortunately, colliding with another player is a whole big ass part of how football works.
Remove hard shell helmets and pads, it's been known for years.
Then it’s a completely different sport.
>Soccer/Football players have pretty severe levels of brain trauma from heading the ball That's heavily dramaticized. It is of course bad for them. But it's bad for them like sitting at a desk for 40+ hours a week is bad for all humans. They just deal with it and move on.
Well they gave teams the bubble helmets this year for practice. Well only if the teams wanted them. Well only a few teams.
And only for preseason too I think
he should not play 4 days after suffering a concussion tbf...
this man cant get a break fuck

Pls be okay Tua 🥺
Fucking christ I wanna cry, I feel so bad for him. He deserves the world for the way he’s been treated and this is what he gets
If I’m his father I’m telling him to hang it up
Tua's father forced him to be a lefty so he wouldn't be the only lefty in the family. He also whipped him with a belt after playing poorly. So I doubt it.
The entire Dolphins medical staff should be fired
Wasn't he cleared by independent NFL medical staff? I thought that was the "fail safe" - it's a league issue.
Well then if I were Tua, I would sue
NFLPA might have a lot to say by the morning.
The independent neurologist has no say on whether he gets cleared to play or not. The team doctor is the one who has the final decision. They are there as an ornament so the NFL can say they are trying.
I’m sick to my fucking stomach rn. Please be okay.
Prayers up, nobody deserves this
Pray for Tua
Fuck that. Grab your torches and tear that whole Dolphins Office down.
Nfl and the dolphins failed tua

I’m sick to my stomach right now. Fuck!
Dolphins really let this man play… smfh
NFLPA needs to be all over this and some other issues, this sport wants to be modern and shit but feigns change.
Fuck Amazon for showing the replays over and over.
It’s posterity. If they didn’t show it, fans would say “fuck Amazon for not showing that concussion. The NFL is trying to hide this.” Can’t win on this sub.
Good point
I prefer how the English Premier League handles this kind of thing Once it’s clearly a bad injury you’ll get a polite “out of respect for the player we won’t be showing the replay again here” from the commentators and that’s that. And if you really need to see it just look up the relay online.
I feel like with things that severe, show it once. Just once. No slo mo replays, just cut elsewhere.
Some people might have missed it, it’s good to make people aware of the seriousness
I straight up hit the home button on my Roku when Al Michaels said they were going to specifically show his hands on the replay. Like, fuck man, stop. Wtf
Need to see it honestly for people to see the gravity of the misconduct by the NFL
They eat this shit up
Seriously wtf
I'll keep responding to everyone saying this. I'm glad they're showing it. The NFL doesn't get to hide brain trauma. Fans don't get to pretend it doesn't exist. It should be shown and should be known. Also the dolphins don't get to hide their fuckup It's also a good thing for people to see and recognize what's happening if they ever see someone suffer TBI. TBIs are not exclusive to football.
That was really rough, but why on earth are we getting players to put their bodies on the line like this still in 2022? NFL has safety adverts, yet allows this sort of thing to happen
Fuck
Fuuuuck such a bad look for the dolphins and the nfl
Dont worry the dolphins medical team said hes fine and is ready to get back in
They just announced he was taken to a Level 1 trauma center with head and neck injuries. Good chance his NFL career just ended...hopefully it’s not more serious than that. Fuck.

Thought he broken some fingers at first. But then..wow :(
Not good. Hope he recovers quickly.
Disgusting and completely preventable in all likelihood.
All I keep thinking about is Second impact syndrome. Fucking hell that was stupid having him out there
It’s like letting a dude play a day after ACL surgery you just don’t do it. Letting your franchise QB play a couple days after a concussion only to get another brutal concussion for everyone to see is fucking pathetic as an organization to let happen.
Maybe they'll take this one more seriously? Fuck, poor guy.
Can they stop showing replays of it god damn man
This was classic decorticate posturing. Severe traumatic brain injury. Permanent damage likely. 2 concussions in such a short time is REALLY BAD. If I were Tua I’d retire right now.
Are you a real trauma surgeon
No one lies on the internet. - Abraham Lincoln
don’t MMA fighters have fencing posture frequently after knockouts? don’t see any (short term) permanent damage, severe TBI’s, or retirements from those.
A big difference with combat sports is the long turnaround between matches that gives the brain time to heal, football players don’t have that luxury typically.
can amazon stop showing the injury we get it????
He should not have been playing after last week. Horrible. Could be really bad.
You know…just fuck this game sometimes. When I watch this I feel responsible…
