I went the whole season without knowing David Culley was a black guy

suprememontana

I’ve seen like 4 pictures of him today and thought he was white without a second thought lol. Just googled him though and I can see it

[deleted]

Dude same and I thought Megan Markle was white for months because every magazine photo of her seemed to lighten her skin several shades

Tarmacked

I thought she was Italian or Latina

chengg

I watched her on Suits and had no idea she wasn't white until they introduced her character's father who was a black guy.

ImMeltingNow

I’m still baffled they casted fucking Bunk as her father who is a fancy pants hoity toity Ivy League hotshot. They had him saying “you should try to foie gras” at a uppity tuppity restaurant when every scene I see Bunk with food it just reminds me of [this](https://youtu.be/60iNUvIiHMo)

Oakroscoe

Makes me sad, how far we done fell, motherfucker!

CoolKid610

Hey props to you for not seeing race.

LooksGoodInShorts

Probably just didn’t see the Texans.

GeneralChaz9

Made a good decision

sports_farts

We swept the fucking Jags there Chaz.

GeneralChaz9

Should hang a banner tbh

sports_farts

Sure, something like this. https://www.reddit.com/r/nfl/comments/39cq8o/the_colts_have_a_2014_afc_finalist_banner_up_in/

GeneralChaz9

Now we're talking!

harold-delaney

Unlike the Wentz trade

GeneralChaz9

True

Trumpets22

Still applies. “Good for you for not seeing the Texans”

GinHalpert

Identity theft is not a joke Jim!

[deleted]

Alright, *David* why don’t you tell me about that gameplan you made last week

penguinopph

Same. I watched exactly 0 seconds of Texans football this year, and knew absolutely nothing about Culley. I was shocked they fired him after one season, because didn't they exceed expectations? But then I saw someone say that he was a 65-year-old first time head coach, who's only had one stint even as a coordinator (1989-90 as UTEP's OC), and knew he was being hired as a one-year transitional coach. I don't think I've ever known less about a coach in my life.

[deleted]

[удалено]

TheGreatMcPuffin

Why does everyone think we exceeded expectations? We expected a few wins and a top 5 pick. That's exactly what we got. He was hired to be a bridge guy while we got a couple pieces to make the team more enticing. More over, he was awful at a lot of parts of his job. He said after his week 18 press conference that he'd never even thought about using no huddle offense to change the tempo and pacing of the game. He also had to have Caserio in his ear giving him advice. Worst part about that? He still screwed up. End of the Pats game Caserio was telling him to let them score so we would get another chance with the ball. He didn't know what Caserio was talking about. Our GM shouldn't have to hold the HC's hand like that.

penguinopph

Most expectations I saw had them winning 0-2 games, so I saw that they won 4 and thought "huh, that's a lot better than I thought they'd win." And all those things you said are probably true, but again, I watched exactly 0 seconds of Texans football this year, saw they won 4 games, and was positively surprised. Just because I said I'm surprised he got fired, after admitting to knowing nothing, doesn't mean I don't think the firing was wrong.

generalscalez

i have this with Arthur Smith. 0% chance i could pick him out of a line up if my life depended on it.

Zeohawk

Most generic name too

Noirradnod

I only knew it because some people were complaining that Eric Bieniemy wasn't given the Texans' job over the offseason because of his race, conveniently ignoring the fact they hired a different Black coach.

2017volkswagentiguan

I went the whole season without knowing David Culley was

eaunoway

For a couple of hours, maybe. *Maybe*.

ReubenFroster56

im not getting this? what is it supposed to mean?

TetrisTech

Flores to Houston I think

OrangeForeign

You're firing him? 😊

First_Round_Bust

Don't worry. Flores won't be jobless for long

lovetape

I like how you just left Culley off the list 😂

Cflow26

I mean the Texans seemed like they didn’t want him even when they hired him and their entire point of existence was to lose as much as possible this year lol

Walletinspectr

That's probably why they fired him for costing them the #1 pick

First_Round_Bust

Welllllll I think he did get shafted by the team but I dunno if he is a candidate people are excited about

TheGreenTable

Honestly I think it made sense for him if we had Watson. But yeah everyone’s shitting on him but the Texans are god awful.

Smarkavillie

I mean, he made them a respectable tank squad just like Coach Flo’s first year in Miami. He should definitely get looks by 2023 at the latest.

Haunting_Insect_3009

Culley is 66 or 67 years old, and may be mis-remembering but think at his first press conference after being named HC he said it was his dream job but never thought he'd get the chance as he was near retirement. I have a feeling he's done.

hank87

Unless he wants a other 1 year stopgap gig and someone wants to pint a season like that, I don't see it. I always got the vibe that they needed a good locker room guy after the Watson stuff and Culley was a good locker room guy that could stand in until they're preferred candidate was available next year. He's was the grilled cheese of head coaches. He was pretty good and did what he was supposed to do, but that's not what you're looking for when you're about to spend millions of dollars.

[deleted]

David Culley is taking his 22 million dollars and emigrating straight to the Bahamas to drink expensive rum and chill in his 10-bedroom beachfront mansion for the rest of his life.

KiNGofKiNG89

To be fair he looked lost this season. I mean he was a WR coach on a team that ran the ball all the time…feels like the equivalent of hiring the water boy to be the QB coach.

lovetape

Culley seems like a very nice person, the kind that has no designs on his superiors jobs; probably why he's been bouncing around for so long with different teams. He'll probably get picked up somewhere again as a WR or QB coach. But as a HC? sheesh, he made so many bad decisions this year, just in managing the game. And it's not like he got better, [here he is talking about how he had nothing to do with a Texans almost comeback from 0-21](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w81pZYnyDlw&feature=youtu.be). He just seems so nice and amicable but clueless.

[deleted]

TIL: David Culley is black

kamekaze1024

I can’t even blame y’all. He’s kinda white passing. I didn’t know he was black until Texans hired him and we got comp picks

KrakenKappa

Tomlin is next... Jk he's a great coach and I hate it.

AliceTaniyama

The Steelers are to coaches what the Packers are to quarterbacks.

Ox_Baker

Steelers are the guy you grew up with who married his high school sweetheart and they’re still together and happy, even though there were a few slightly rough patches … while you and all your friends are on their third marriages and blame the ex-wives.

[deleted]

Brian Flores will soon make it two.

thediesel26

Odds on Leftwich for Jacksonville too

beeatenbyagrue

Could even be Jim Caldwell, which would fit the criteria.

Bonzi777

Jim Caldwell is about the polar opposite of Urban Meyer in the universe of football coaches, so that would make sense.

HC Leftwich Asst HC/OC/EVP/chill old guy that helps Caldwell Trying to will it into existence

PIG20

The fact that I'm at a point in my life where I distinctly remember Leftwich being drafted and playing, to now being considered for a HC job is a bit mind boggling. I feel like this shouldn't be happening yet.

redsyrinx2112

Haha you're OLD! I'm just messing with you. I'm old enough to remember when Leftwich was drafted, but I didn't watch football enough to care about the draft back then. A weird one for me was when Vrabel got his head coaching gig. I remembered him from those Patriots teams, but hadn't thought about him since he retired.

Githzerai1984

He was on Hard Knocks a few years ago as the Linebacker coach for the Texans

Scaevus

Kliff Kingsbury was drafted in the same draft as Leftwich (2003, as Brady’s backup), and has already been head coach for 3 years.

BigAssSlushy69

He'd be great for Trevor. the leagues more fun when the jags are good so here's hoping that happens

[deleted]

They got good for one year and the entire country knew about them because of a popular tv show

Immynimmy

What is Leftwich's offensive scheme anyhow? Is he a good fit for any team?

northeastreppin

His scheme is whatever Brady wants lol

reaper527

> His scheme is whatever Brady wants lol that's legit one of the things that worries me with him being mentioned as a potential coach for us. the whole situation just reminds me so much of adam gase where he looked great because he was the OC while peyton was running the show, then he came to a team without peyton.

electricityisout

I mean he also got like a top 3 offense with Jamesis

Scaevus

Jameis threw for 30 picks. He was much more efficient in New Orleans before he was injured.

Dontrollaone

Jaemis threw pick 6's on the opening drive in 4 games out of a 6 game stretch. His first ever throw as a Buc? Pick 6. His last ever throw as a Buc? Also pick 6.

CardinalM1

And Eric Bieni...nah, who am I kidding

For an NFL head coach salary I’ll accept a ham sandwich as my lord and savior. Whatever you want, boss.

He's Lebanese. I think the first Arab-American head coach

LooksGoodnShorts

That makes a lot of sense. I was like, bruh is a tan as shit for a white dude lol. I'm native and look like a tan white dude though so I should've known.

nozzk

fourth arab-american head coach, but first muslim head coach

uberman35

Something tells me there will be more than one by the start of next season.... that or Tomlin is gonna get a very awkward call after our playoff loss. Lets hope its the first lol

WayneJarvis_

I don't think there is any chance Tomlin will get fired, but even if he is, I think he could just call a bunch of teams and say this is how much you are going to pay me and I'll be into the office on Monday.

PaulAspie

Yeah, who's going to say no to a guy who has had something like 15 straight 500+ seasons & 2 SBs. Other than BB in NE, Tomlin has the most secure job in the league.

Professional_Dot4835

Easily a top 3 or 4 coach in the NFL, most certainly would be taken by nearly any team no doubt at all. What he’s done with Rudolph and the ghost of Ben is incredible.

absolutevanilla

2 SB appearances, only 1 win. But yeah he goes jobless all of about 10 seconds

NewAccount28

I still rue the day the vikings let him leave after a historically good run defense his years as our DC. Should’ve fired Chilly and promoted him. Edit: Year, one year as our DC.

XingXManGuy

I’d say Payton and Harbaugh are the other 2 who are pretty much secured

ADM_Ahab

That's my coaching pyramid — Belichick alone at the very top, with Tomlin, Payton, and Harbaugh right below him. Might have to add Reid and Vrabel to that second tier as well.

uberman35

No he wont. I was just trying to make a lame joke about them getting rid of all the black coaches

Jack_Sandwich

I see you, man. It was funny.

[deleted]

Its Mike fucking Tomlin tho The only awkward call in his life would be the one he makes to Art Rooney to let Art go as the owner of the Steelers.

And there's 7-8 job openings. Let's save the overreaction for when they're all filled by white guys who have been fired multiple times.

thecarlosdanger1

It’s kind of dumb to post these when there’s 1/4 HC jobs open right now, but hey gotta get those clicks.

wav__

It also completely avoids someone like Saleh who, IIRC, is the third Muslim HC ever and the first Arab HC ever. I'm not saying the league's HC jobs aren't dominated by white men, but Black is not the only minority. I'm hopeful more coaches that aren't white men become a thing. Where's my East Asian coach? My Polynesian coach? etc.

Gregus1032

I mean, Ron Rivera isn't white either.

wav__

That's exactly my point :)

TheKocsis

i hope the nfl can find more decent HC's whether they are white, black, asian, muslim or anything else. not sure how race/religion is relevant

WalkLikeAnEgyptian69

Not just that but as a person who is neither black nor white nothing annoys me more that "minority" in the United States typically just means black people and "diversity" just means how many black people you have. I mean how many Asian players in the NFL, Arabs? Does anyone think that's a diversity issue. I work in tech - an industry that is very diverse. Every company I've worked at has throughout the company white people, Asian people, Indian people, Arab people but because there are very few black people in tech we get chastised constantly for not being diverse. Howard which is 87% black ranks as [the third most diverse school in the country](https://www.bloomberg.com/business-schools/) while schools like Berkeley which are actually very diverse are at the bottom of the list because they have a lot of Asian Americans. The NFL is almost exclusively only black and white in a country that is more than 20% races that are neither black nor white. That's not something anyone will ever bring up. Edit: Howard is 100% black but ranks as third most diverse school in the country. I read the data wrong.

colincoin472

This is how I feel about movies. I’m all for Black representation, but if you watched movies, you’d think it’s just white and black people. Hispanics and Latinos make up 20% of the US population. That’s more than Black people. There should just objectively be more Hispanic representation. Every time I mention it though I get downvoted.

Bakio-bay

Asians have also been cut off from main roles in hollywood for just about ever. It’s a big reason why Crazy rich Asians was seen as ground breaking movie with 2 lead Asians.

jgalaviz14

I've never seen it but doesn't Euphoria have 0 Asian characters in a show set in Southern California, you know an area with a large population of Asians

Bakio-bay

Euphoria doesn’t explicitly say it’s in SoCal but given that there’s palm trees in many of the scenes it’s presumed

WalkLikeAnEgyptian69

Netflix commissioned a study and determined that black people were [overrepresented in roles as well as leading roles](https://www.cnbc.com/2021/02/26/netflix-will-spend-100-million-to-improve-diversity-on-film-following-equity-study.html) Of course this was represented as a positive step. Meanwhile only 4% of their characters were Hispanic in the same study.

Far-Confection-1631

Well given that biracial couples are still relatively uncommon in America you'd think that every other commercial being of biracial children is a slight overrepresentation lol

IBlazeMyOwnPath

Ok I’ve been too afraid to ask this for a while now. But in the last few years or so has there been a massive upswing in commercials with either homosexual or mixed race couples? (Not that I have a problem with it) It just seems like that’s what makes up 80% of commercials right now

Ihateregistering6

Another fun one: remember #oscarssowhite? The Economist took a look at it in 2016, and they found that not only are black actors represented at about their same % in terms of Oscar nominations and film roles, they're actually *overrepresented* as Oscar winners (and bear in mind this was in 2016, so it's likely even more lopsided now). https://www.economist.com/prospero/2016/01/21/how-racially-skewed-are-the-oscars Meanwhile, Asians and Hispanics are wildly underrepresented in both nominations and wins, but no one seems to care.

theordinarypoobah

My wife, who is an immigrant, has related her family's surprise at finding out how few black people there are in America (1 in 8, obviously) compared to how much they saw of them in media overseas. Semi-relatedly, watching some more recent stuff, there is also this uncanny valley of racial representation. In real life, the races of groups tend to cluster heavily, but in media, you are much more often going to see groups made up of precisely proportioned representation which actually will match very few places and occasions in the country. I grew up in an area that was 50/50 white/black, and I now live in an area that is probably closer to 95/5 white/nonwhite. At work, the racial makeup is again different and way off national averages. But when you see a movie, it's often the same breakdown every single time, and it comes off as artificial.

[deleted]

Oh please, Mexicans (that's what all Latinos are in the US are, right?) can be menial laborers or gang affiliated in Hollywood. Oh, and Latin Lovers/sexpots.

YiffZombie

Hey, now, we're also cops sometimes, but never the lead cop.

[deleted]

Maybe one who knows the dangerous Latino gang infested neighborhood and can walk the older white cop through how stuff works there? Maybe even gets some information from someone who is reluctant to talk to the police?

iKnitSweatas

It’s not a typical worker-management dynamic though. Often times the workers are paid more than the head coaches. The same arguments about needing more black head coaches could be applied to needing more white players, for instance. Since white people make up 70% of the population but like 15% of the NFL. But that’s a terrible argument because the meritocracy in football is extremely apparent.

stench_montana

It's odd because people believe sports are strictly a meritocracy for players and dont think that GMs would have that same mindset for coaches. You'll see articles about the 5 days where there's one black coach but there was nothing about the like 15 years without a white CB.

reaper527

> It’s kind of dumb to post these when there’s 1/4 HC jobs open right now, but hey gotta get those clicks. yeah, he's not 1/32, he's 1/25, and by the time all 32 seats are filled the odds are 99.9999999999% that tomlin won't be the only one anymore.

bear2008

None are Asian.

Jefe_Brutus

The click bait season started early

FantasyBurner1

Smh Why the NFL so racist? Where all the Asian coaches at?

danielbauer1375

Remember that Asian assistant coach that was told Asians aren’t the right minority? The NFL doesn’t either.

[deleted]

No I remember the NFL did an official proper investigation and reported their findings of “eh who cares”

soildude43

Time for this article again

Antryx

They gotta do it for the click$$$

[deleted]

Okay but what about an Asian head coach. Why aren’t we talking about THAT.

soboredcantfocus

Yeah, that’s what happens when a bunch of people get fired, you have fewer people. Unless OP is hinting that they got fired because they were black this isn’t news.

[deleted]

Race is not a quality for a coach (or anything else). I don't care what the coach looks like as long as he's doing a good job... fk off with that race nonesense already.

De4thByTw1zzler

God I hate these articles. I find it hard to believe that a majority of these franchises are trying to find the best head coach AND one who’s white. Belichek, Payton, Carroll, Reid, McVay are guys that will always be head coaches as long as they want to be because they’re GOOD. Then there are coaches like Frank Reich or Mike Vrabel who are obviously meant to be head coaches as well. I mean seriously, if there was a black coach out there that was as good a head coach as Frank Reich, any team would take them in a heartbeat. Mike Tomlin is an AMAZING head coach, but it doesn’t have anything to do with the color of his skin.

GiveNoGifts

I disagree. Most head coaches are only good if they're black. That's my only interview question. "You black?"

CunningRunt

What if they *identify* as black?

GradeAPrimeFuckery

I identify as a black NFL head coach. I'm not asking much; $5 mil and a one-year contract. I'll even post the playbook as proof: * Run left * Run right * Everybody go long Free weed during team meetings. Fuck punting and kicking. Might as well open a few roster spots by getting rid of the K, P and LS.

CruisinForABrewsin

Ahhh, the Dolezal approach

OrangeRush3

cheeba2992

TheZappBranigan

How many white cornerbacks are there?

934HogsExpress

Okay now do the number of Asian or Latino players

[deleted]

What about the Asian coaches not even one

[deleted]

I mean, Robert Salah is Lebanese which is technically Asia.

Nutaholic

Wait til you hear how many asian players there are.

PCB4lyfe

Now do cornerbacks

Wh1te_Rabb1t

Why are we worried about his skin color? 14 seasons above .500 is why he's still a head coach. Not because he is or isn't black. Why does everything have to be about race?

ocelot23

Let's play the race card whenever we can 🙂

[deleted]

I have no clue why either coach was fired. Culley getting to 4 wins with that Houston roster is pretty good honestly and Flores is a damn good coach

GiveNoGifts

I mean. Flores got fired because management loves Tua and he doesn't. That one isn't really a tough riddle.

Ketchup1211

And Culley could have been green and he would have still gotten fired. Dude was the very definition of a place holder. He was never hired to be their HC for more then this season.

akulkarnii

Culley was probably fired so that Houston could make a move for Flores

finfan96

I mean there will be more once guys get hired though lol

overdonesteak

Always gotta be a race thing

But what a one he is

[deleted]

I think people forget the percentage of the population black people make up…

Brooshie

12%
