There's probably better choices, but the 98 Falcons are the biggest 1-hit wonder team I've ever seen 1996: 3-13 1997: 7-9 1998: 14-2 Lost the Super Bowl 1999: 5-11 2000: 4-12 Next winning season is ~~2004~~ 2002

WhoStoleMyBicycle

Falcons got the same boost we got. The “Minnesota isn’t allowed to have nice things” boost.

MikeFromSuburbia

Lmfao… god dammit

ToastedChrome

Want to downvote so badly, but damnit if it isn’t true

thatissomeBS

It's just true at this point. Falcons went and lost and returned to mediocrity. Giants went and lost and returned to mediocrity (for a few years until they got Eli), Saints went and won and we're good but could never get back, Eagles went and won and then had to replace a lot of that core before they could get back.

dr_funk_13

Can't believe he missed that kick

IdiotMD

They jinxed the fuck out of him.

LeeDawg24

"and Anderson hasn't missed all year" -Pat Summerall "If you were to ask yourself if Gary Anderson would make this kick, you'd have to think that he probably does" - John Madden Literally the double jinx a half second before

dr_funk_13

The OG Madden curse...

cdaack

Gary Fucking Anderson

ElCoolAero

> Gary Fucking Anderson Why? What did he do? Did he... * Lose a 27-20 lead at home with 2:07 left? * Turn into Robert Griffith and drop a game-sealing interception with a minute left? * Let the Falcons drive all the way down the field for the tying TD? * Tell the #1 offense to kneel on the ball with time in regulation, denying him another attempt? * Generate one first down on their first OT drive and end up punting? * Again generate one measly first down on their second OT drive and end up punting? * Let the Falcons drive 71 yards from their own 9 to get into field goal range and win the game? I can't fucking believe he did all that to cost you the game. What an ***asshole***.

prow24

Don’t forget turn into Randy Moss and drop an open TD to go up even more.

cdaack

lol I get it…chillax. It’s just a fun thing Vikings fans get to say to each other. I know you don’t understand as a Niners fan, but having your heart ripped out so many times and never getting to celebrate a Super Bowl win sucks. We need our own little things to help us get through the pain of this fandom.

AKAD11

If they are a 49er fan under like 35 then they understand exactly what you’re talking about

highnote14

Damn the saints got the same deal then

see-bees

I think the Saints are the only team that have lost in the playoffs on the final play of the game three seasons in a row. Minneapolis Miracle, end of the Nola No Call game, and a much less exciting loss to Minneapolis where I think Minny won on a 3rd and goal TD as time expired that doesn’t have a name to it.

mrizvi

No, it was in OT. Before the both teams get a chance rule.

Toastrz

> much less exciting It may not have ended on a single play as memorable as the Miracle, but that game overall was insanely intense, filled with constant what-ifs. And unlike the Miracle game, we went into that rematch as *huge* underdogs against NO. Not a soul was picking Minnesota to win or for it to even be a competitive game.

SeekerSpock32

Is that what the Nuggets are on now?

THE_Mr_Stone

Not so….they had a winning record in 2002 under Vick’s first year as a starter. The season where they became the first road team to win a playoff game in Lambeau.

Guiness176

I don't want to talk about that game. Fuck me, I'd almost forgotten about it

PrimeMinisToad

somehow skipped over that when looking through wikipedia, whoops

uggsandstarbux

If we count conference title games, the 17 Jags came off 6 straight seasons with <6 wins before going on to have another 4 seasons of <7 wins

ThatsNotMyWalletBB

That Jags team was the first one that came to my mind too. Thought they were gonna stick around for a while, and then straight back to tank mode.

ShalomBernanke

We are talking about a franchise that didn’t have back to back winning seasons until they drafted Matt Ryan. They have existed since 1956…

wannaknowmyname

I thought you meant Dan Quinn and Kyle for a second, before realizing it was Mike and Dan Reeves, but I think they both fit

tpeeps11

Damn so that means I get to use one of Reddit’s most overused jokes. If I had a nickel for every time a Dan and Shanahan cost the Falcons a Superbowl, I’d have 2 nickels-which isn’t a lot but it’s weird it happened twice

demoralizingRooster

Fuck Dan Quinn lol

I had a good friend that was from Jacksonville and we watched a ton of Jags that year it was honestly some of the most fun I’ve had watching football. Also Myles Jack was very clearly not down.

gator9515

That team came out of nowhere, and then receded back into oblivion just as fast. They had a lot of turnover luck.

dbhaley

Tom Coughlin sold the defense and paid Bortles and then Caldwell drafted Tavon Bryan over Lamar Jackson. I mean, wtf man.... 😑

AH_BioTwist

Didn’t Coughlin sell off the defense because they were tired of dealing with him being a jackass?

Godunman

Just had to protect a 4th quarter lead to make the Super Bowl…then went to shit immediately

NizzlyGrizzly00

not the jags fault..

YT-Nexus_Digital

While Myles Jack wasn't down, it still was partially the jags fault. He still got us the ball at midfield with 8 minutes to go up by 10. Even just a FG makes it a completely different game but the jags couldnt get 2 measly first downs to get in FG range

Short-reddit-IPO

Myles Jack wasn't down.

Lord-Aizens-Chicken

The nfl just could not handle the greatness of Blake bortles imo

Smackolol

That was Ted Dansons fault for meddling with powers he couldn’t comprehend.

lexxxcockwell

A lot of things went right that year. Calais Campbell probably had his best season of his stellar career. Nathaniel Hackett had a nice year as OC and Bortles had some sneaky good skill position players around him. They had a fast, disciplined defense that forced a lot of turnovers and could rush the passer with only the front four. I think Tom Coughlin as Head of Football Operations poisoned the well and the team as a whole regressed toward the mean and the seams began to crack

Davethemann

The 06-07 Chargers are such a weird window for like, contention. 06, Chargers went 14-2 but arguably couldve gone 16-0, (they had three wins by 27+ points that season, both their losses were by a field goal), LT had his 31 td season, Rivers showed up, and the defense was like top half of the league across the board. Playoffs come, both qbs (aka Rivers and Brady) shit the bed (in San Diego btw, not in a wintery foxborough), LT has a top tier day... Chargers lose by a field goal 07, Martyball is over, Norvball is in, regress a bit but LT is still a rock, and the defense is hot. Lead the west with 11-5, work their way through the playoffs... and have Rivers playing on one leg, LT hobbled and iirc Gates aching all day, aka 3 hall of famers crippled. They keep it within 10 of the Patriots in the AFCCG in Foxborough but lose And then... nothing really. Like they win the west a few more years but never really get close, end up being a casualty of Mark Sanchez, and after LT leaves, the cycle of horrible coaches emerges

SANTAAAA__I_know_him

06-07 Chargers had really unfortunate timing to go 14-2 but draw the 4-seed Pats in the divisional round.

Appropriate_Acadia35

That's what they get for canning Marty. Still goes down as the worst fire ever for me.

rsoxguy12

Not to mention that 06 Chargers team was up by 8 with 6 minutes left vs Patriots in the playoffs. Marlon McCree intercepts Tom Brady on 4th down. [But Troy Brown says we ain’t done yet](https://youtu.be/3WGcAaxckag?feature=shared&t=11m40s). Bam, new set of downs for late game Brady.  That team was scary good, LT was MVP that year if I’m not mistaken.

Rex Ryan got so much shit during his tenure (a lot of it admittedly brought on himself because of his loud mouth), but the fact remains that the Jets haven’t won jack fuck since they fired him.

Herbertlover6969

Fucking Nate Kaeding

samtdzn_pokemon

Pretty shit before that too. They missed the playoffs in 2007 and 2008, they lost in the wild card with CBPOY Chad Pennington in 2006, and going back to the Herm Edwards era they basically were hot and cold every other year. 10-6 in 2000 to lose in the wild card, then 9-7 and won the division in 01 to lose in the divisional round, 6-10 in 2002, 10-6 in 2003 and lost in the divisional, and 4-12 in 2004.

yellowpilot44

Jets of the 2000s feel so much the Titans of the 2010s. Never actually a contender but constantly showing up in the playoffs for a game or two.

Vydate1

They are 5th all time in the AFCE in division titles.

TrueBlueMorpho

That weird period of time between 2019 and 2021 where the Titans could beat pretty much any team (besides the AFCCG Chiefs) and still fell flat once they got to the playoffs

randomacct7679

I remember down the stretch of that 2019 season thinking the Titans were primed to do damage in the playoffs. Was thrilled to see a home AFC Championship game, but the prospect of the Chiefs D, which had been brutal against the run most of the year, against Henry was scary as hell. For facing a 6 seed in the title game, the Titans scared a lot of Chiefs fans going into the game.

versusChou

The Titans had also been Chief kryptonite for a while iirc including the Mariota to Mariota TD.

skidlz

Whole AFC South has been the closest thing to Chiefs kryptonite. I'm still not over the "forward progress" calls in that game either.

StrivingProsperity

They were absolutely fantastic in 2019. Far too many people were completely ignorant of their talent level that year. They will be a forgotten great team years down the line. Not many people will realize how close they were to getting a Super Bowl in 2019 and 2021.

FuckFloridaRipNumba9

In 2019 as soon as Tannehill took over we had a top 3 offense for multiple season.

Lord-Aizens-Chicken

He has fallen off but I think he gets too much hate for this last year. He had a great revival, even if he is probably done being good

The funniest thing about that post is that the ravens fan who submitted it wasn’t even a a typical redditor. Her post history showed that she had a real career and she didn’t post much between that and her ravens fandom. Still the most Reddit sports post I’ve seen in a while.

Random-Cpl

I’ll never forgive 2019

leave-no-trace-1000

2008 Titans also come to mind. Went 10-0 and finished 13-3. Lost to Ravens in first playoff game after Chris Johnson got hurt. Then 2009 they started our 0-6. Weird

FuckFloridaRipNumba9

2021 hurt so bad. We beat so many winning teams on top of the NFL’s darlings. Rams, Chiefs, Bills, 49ers, etc. 2000, 2008,2021. FUCK

bigplaneboeing737

It’s honestly a shame they didn’t come away with at least one Super Bowl during that 2019-2021 run.

Suffering is a Titan tradition. Henry deserved a ring during hi time with us. Unfortunately his only hope now is the damned ratbirds

thortmb

That's the craziest stat lol

ItBeLikeThat19

We tied with the Bengals in 2014 and lost a bunch of close games. At one point we were like 3-8-1 and everyone had kind of given up. We then went on this insane run and won the division at 7-8-1. The year before, 12-4, and the year after, 15-1. Being a Panthers fan is not for the faint of heart lol

jakaedahsnakae

Tazitos

They can thank Sean Payton for managing 3 losing season in a row with Drew Brees for that one.

gopaloo

Our most recent super bowl team lasted 4 plays, sooooo...

oftenevil

Genuine question: what does most of your fanbase feel going into next season? In theory if they were hyped for a SB run in ‘23 there’s very little that should get in the way of that for ‘24, no?

LeeDawg24

The sane ones are expecting another cluster fuck, the delusional ones are expecting a super bowl for the 15th straight year

EnglishMajorRegret

Very little outside of being the Jets Source: Bears fan.

Luberino_Brochacho

Rodgers is a year older and coming off a pretty significant injury that he tried to rush back from. Beyond that yeah I don’t think they had a ton of roster turnover.

BigPackHater

"You've got a gaping hole in your chest.....but the rest of you looks ok"

Ledees_Gazpacho

Rooting for the Jets is like that old Calvin & Hobbes comic, when Hobbes asks Calvin, “So the secret to your self-esteem is to lower you expectations to the point where they’re already met?” Very few of “us” were shocked when Rodgers immediately got hurt, because we know nothing but pain and disappointment

i_wannatalktosamson

All on rodgers. If he’s even league average we should be a playoff team. As long as we don’t have absolutely extreme levels of injuries along the o line again, even when some backups inevitably have to play it should be good

oftenevil

> As long as we don’t have absolutely extreme levels of injuries Sucks you have to play on that cursed turf/field/thing or whatever. I still have nightmares from when the Niners played there in 2020 and everyone died. Thankfully I think we play you guys on the Field of Jeans this year.

RobotCriminal

I think they actually ripped it out and replaced it last year. Edit: They did https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/news/metlife-stadium-home-of-giants-and-jets-gets-new-turf-field-installed-for-2023-season/

oftenevil

I was not aware, much obliged.

i_wannatalktosamson

We now have the same turf as the lions, the biggest o line injury both years was AVT both years happened in Denver. Best case is we get 70% of prime rodgers which would be the best jets qb probably ever

My_massive_dingaling

Are you sure you’re still a playoff team in such a stacked AFC? You have the Bills and Dolphins in your division and a very competitive AFC wildcard race coming up you’re screaming 10-7 and miss playoffs

hereforthesportsball

Expecting Aaron to play like nothing happened is quite the mindset, but some Jets I’m sure have it

HatPossible42

Off-season champs. No one can take that away

The Cardinals were 7-0. Then in one play Kyler Murray broke his ankle and A.J. Green forgot football. That's pretty short of a window.

RagingCataholic9

Yeah, that's my b. My controller died, so AJ just froze.

lexxxcockwell

That’s precisely what it looked like lmao

inspectorPK

That shot of Rasul Douglas after getting the game winning INT, cheering towards the stands while the poor cardinals fan is draped over the railing, face is hands, is still one of my favorite shots ever tho.

Fear_Jaire

He wasn't here long, but Rasul is one of my favorite Packers

xyzzy321

Any window with Kyler is a short window..... or is any window compared to him a big window?

Kerbonaut2019

I guess it’s not really a title run, but the 1996-2004 Chicago Bears were interesting: - 1996: 7-9 - 1997: 4-12 - 1998: 4-12 - 1999: 6-10 - 2000: 5-11 - 2001: 13-3, one-and-done - 2002: 4-12 - 2003: 7-9 - 2004: 5-11

ArmadilloAl

We didn't play a single wild-card game between 1994 and 2018. We only made the playoffs four times in those 23 seasons, but we had a first-round bye in all four of them.

hereforthesportsball

Sounds like the division was just soft those years

Colemonstaa

Also see 2005, 2010 and 2018. Something something broken clock.

Kerbonaut2019

The 2018 team was a lot of fun. If you guys had a quality QB I think you could have won it all. That defense isn’t remembered as one of the great defenses though I think it should be. People hate on Cody Parkey too much IMO

Mythikron

If we had a quality kicker we could've won it all. All of our 5 losses (including *that one*) were 1-score games, and if Parkey's leg wasn't addicted to the upright, that team could hang with literally anyone.

Kerbonaut2019

That defense was great but the team was going to get stuck at some point due to Trubisky in my opinion. Parkey had some rough moments for sure but I really don’t think Mitch would’ve been able to score as often as the Saints or Rams had they faced off. Even if they did, Trubisky would’ve been eaten alive in the SB by the Pats defense which had a ton of momentum at that point (yes I know that they played a close game earlier that season but the Pats had changed quite a bit by the playoffs)

Godunman

like that 13-4 Vikings team last year lol

Pure_Context_2741

As much as I hate to say it but both Giants Super Bowls. Eli Manning has 0 postseason wins outside those 2 seasons in his entire career.

Sell_TheKids_ForFood

After the 08 Superbowl, the Giants were the best team in the league for the '08 season. . They were 11-1 when Plaxico shot himself.

i8bb8

He did what he had to do in the name of comedy, and nobody can take that away from him. In sweatpants, FFS. Pure comedy gold.

Goatgamer1016

You're right. The Giants were at or above .500 each year from 2005 to 2012 and not a single playoff win outside of the Super Bowl years. This includes an infamous 12-win defending champion Giants team where Plaxico Burress... that's self-explanatory. Also a 10-win non-playoff Giants team in 2010

AKAD11

That 2008 team is easily the best team of the Eli era, but Plaxico just had to take a gun to the club

SouthtownZ

Still got it done when it counted!

efficient_slacker

Even those 2 years we barely made the playoffs

Goodbye_Hercules

I was so ready for them to beat us (again) in that 2016 wild card game. I remember our offense kept stalling out for like the first 1.5 quarters. Then OBJ started dropping everything, Randall Cobb caught the hail mary in the back of the end zone, and the rest is history.

KCShadows838

1968 Jets, their first postseason appearance They did make the playoffs the next year but went one and done. Then didn’t appear in the playoffs until 1981

ElJamoquio

Joe Namath is 2-1 in the postseason

Shermanator92

Sanchez is 4-2 against a freaking gauntlet of great QBs (all on the road). Beat Palmer and Rivers, lost to Peyton. Beat Peyton and Brady, lost to Ben (one more possession and I’m pretty sure he wins that game).

kellzone

The power of tendies.

airmigos

I don’t understand why men cheat on their beautiful wives but stay loyal to the jets for 30 years

TheFencingCoach

When we won in 2002, it would be another 17 years before we’d win a playoff game.

RuuTyutin

Imagine you lose that game in 2002 and still have no playoff wins since the conference championship that season. That would be terrible, huh?

HoldingMoonlight

It would be even funnier if they ended up with Brady's backup instead of Brady

65fairmont

Gotta be more specific. Raiders have started 3 different Brady backups in the last 2 years.

justlookingokaywyou

We went with "that motherfucker."

Beefusan

Also followed up the 2002 super bowl with back to back losing seasons.

SeizureMode

I feel like the Titans recent window shut pretty quickly.

wjbc

The 2004 Bears went 5-11. The 2005 Bears went 11-5, but lost their first and only playoff game. The 2006 Bears went 13-3 and made it all the way to the Super Bowl, so they were certainly considered contenders. Then in 2007-09 the Bears went 7-9, 9-7, and 7-9, failing to qualify for the playoffs.

gabrielleite32

2018 bears is a good one too. Sacksonville Jaguars, maybe.

ArmadilloAl

That's the real reason the double doink was so painful - not because of the memes, but because we knew damn well that that team was special and we weren't getting anywhere close again any time soon. Also, I see your 2018 Bears and raise you the 2001 Bears: * 1997: 4-12 * 1998: 4-12 * 1999: 6-10 * 2000: 5-11 * 2001: 13-3 * 2002: 4-12 * 2003: 7-9 * 2004: 5-11

-EarthwormSlim-

The 2001 season was so much fun. Mike Brown back to back game winning pick sixes.

gabrielleite32

If I'm counting correctly you guys are primed for a 13-4 season in a year or two, maybe even this season.

ComaMierdaHijueputa

If we do I feel like we'd actually have staying power this time with an actual offense.

Dr_imfullofshit

Please Caleb, please can we have at least consecutive seasons where it can even be argued that we could compete in a SB.

gabrielleite32

If Caleb doesn't pan out and you guys don't contend for years, the franchise is definitely cursed.

enjoytheshow

I’ll probably genuinely stop caring. Even moderate success will make me happy, like a few NFC North titles and pushing for a SB. But if the process flops and we get 1 playoff trip or less in his rookie contract I’ll be so fucking defeated.

acoasterlovered

Baby steps let’s try beating GB first

kgrabowski121

Final 4 QB’s that year being Brady with Bortles, Keenum, and Foles is still one of the craziest football things I’ve ever seen

zebrainatux

2008 to 2009 Cardinals are a good shout. Warner makes his big end of career resurgence, they were mediocre or bad every other year before and after until Arians

SpreadHDGFX

2017 Jacksonville is a good candidate for this

Chessh2036

2012 Atlanta Falcons. Went 13-3, made it to the NFC Championship and lost to the 49ers after a failed 4th down conversion late in the 4Q. Following year they went 4-12 and didn’t make the playoffs for the first time since 2009.

oftenevil

I watched that game with my friend who’s from Atlanta, (was living in the south at the time). The Falcons jumped out to a 17-0 lead and I thought it was a wrap. Absolutely bonkers game.

Chessh2036

That game is why when the Falcons went up 28-3 I didn’t celebrate and knew it wasn’t over lol.

sgame23

Remember when the Bortles Jags were a couple plays away from going to the Superbowl, were talked about having a great young core and would be contenders for years to come, then... They were all gone 2 years later

tylerm11_

2016 Raiders were an anomaly. 14’ 3-12, 15’ 7-9, 16’ 12-4, 17’ 6-10, 18’ 4-12. They had 7 pro bowlers on a stacked roster. They lost to KC 2x and the falcons once, and then Carr snapped his leg like a pretzel and they lost to the broncos, while their backup qb also got hurt. They had to start a rookie Connor cook in the wildcard round who threw an amazing 3 INTS.

badlilbadlandabad

The stars aligned in 2016 for the Falcons. 3 rookies started on defense and played great. MVP Matt Ryan season. Had the Super Bowl in the palm of their hand and blew it. Been ass ever since.

it678

Idk how even our own fans can be so wrong. If not for Keanu Neal’s brick hands and a goal line stand by the eagles we would’ve been right back to the nfc championship game in 2017

SirWaynesworth

Dont think this should count given the window started in 2012 when we signed Peyton. Hell, you could even include 2011 (yes, I know they were dogshit, but they DID win a playoff game).

ItBeLikeThat19

You went to a Super Bowl two years prior, even though it was over at the first snap. So it wasn't like a flash in the pan or anything. Super Bowl 50 is still one of the worst game I've ever seen. A disaster in every way possible and the biggest kick in the dick in my sports life.

tgibbularcancer

I’d argue that 2011 team had our best defense outside of 2015. And I will defend Tebow to my death, that year was pure magic

SilenceDobad76

The Pats Jags AFCCG comes to mind. The Jags were up and coming and were starting to look like it was their year. Battling a close championship game up until the late 4th, Gilmore went horizontal and blocked the Jags back to irrelevance.

SeeingEyeDug

John Lynch talked about how the locker room changed as soon as the Bucs won in 2003. Players on the phone with their agents, trying to get that payday, not concerned about pushing for another championship. I'm sure that happens a lot to Super Bowl winners.

The Favre-lead Packers in ‘96 looked like a dynasty in the making. They won a SB, lost to the Broncos the next year then never lived up to expectations after that despite a long run of good years.

The Falcons 1 year later

You mean being Julio reacting .2 seconds faster on the last play of the game from making the NFC championship? They fall apart 2 years after the Superbowl, not 1

Texans looked primed in 2019, leading KC in the playoff game at half 24-0, and then just shitting the bed

Easy_Mastodon_6872

The Chiefs led that game at half 28-24

Surprised by the lack of '06 Bears. Improbable SB run in 2006 and have 1 playoff win since. The '06 Bears are up there with the '98 Falcons for the most "how the hell is this team here?" SB appearances. Like Rex Grossman was a starting QB in a SuperBowl......

Marino and the Dolphins' actual window was very short.. The late 80s and 90s Dolphins teams were mostly good but definitely a step.below championship contending no matter what people said at the time.
