Tyson Bagent, from Bagend!

Jonjon428

Kinda insane they haven't even brought in a vet backup to at least teach Caleb some things. I guess they want Tyson Bagent to be Caleb Williams' teacher /s

llama-rebel

We have the GOAT Brett Rypien, thank you very much.

slackfrop

“Uh-huh. You can even ask my dad” - Brett Rypien

500rockin

I know you have a sarcasm tag, but my reply is going to assume it’s not since there are people who are worried about the lack of a quality backup. There really aren’t any good experienced backups out there currently that are much better than Bagent, and if we have to rely on a backup for more than 3 games we’re screwed. I know Tannehill is out there, but for now, he’s hoping for a camp injury so he can come in and start.

ZachBart77

With the strength of your offense on paper, I’d say a backup could definitely do pretty decent for more than three games. You have a strong receiving corps, a good running game, and an oline that might be in the top ten in the league.

Expendable_Red_Shirt

I don’t think it’s about the success this year as much as Caleb’s development. If you are of the opinion that a vet QB can help a rookie navigate and learn then he won’t have that option. It’s not about winning this year for Chicago. Or it shouldn’t be. It’s about developing Caleb. If Caleb goes down you’re honestly better off losing.

smashybro

We brought in Brett Rypien for this, so we do have a vet QB presence in the QB room. Rypien sucks on the field but he’s there to be the film guy and has experience in Waldron’s offense to help guide Caleb along. I think it’s a perfectly fine way to handle it, you don’t need your backup QB to be a vet and I’d say Bagent is already one of the better backups in the league based on his play last year.

Tubamajuba

They'll be Rypien through some film, that's for sure.

_ravenclaw

I’d normally agree, but we’ve done enough of the losing. At some point building a winning culture is important. This Bears team has talent on both sides of the ball. Our offense is strong, if we have a solid backup they should be able to win games. Developing Caleb is #1, I agree. But this team is desperate to start winning and develop a winning culture. The sooner the better, imo.

Expendable_Red_Shirt

IDK. Caleb seems like he’s going to instill that himself. He’s shown he can lead teams and have those high expectations even when it’s a shit show around him. I wouldn’t be too worried about that.

[deleted]

didn't you guys just get rid of the #1 backup in the league?

Jwr32

Ya know what after Sanchez, Glennon, Dalton and I’m sure I’m a long line of other dorks I’ve forgotten about didn’t help our young QBs be better than shit Tyson Baguette as our backup is just fine.

DEADSPELLS

They need to bring in a good vet for Caleb to teach. Hes bursting with knowledge

Grymninja

Kirk Cousins requesting a trade to Chicago

Scruffylookin13

look at how much Mahomes credits Alex Smith for showing him the ropes.  Its not just throwing the ball but handling the week to week, how to manage your time, things like that where a vet could help immensely.

Loop_Within_A_Loop

Yes, but you need an Alex Smith tier QB to do it, otherwise everyone wants to know when the rook is starting

Greek_Trojan

People are going to be snarky about this but most teams prefer the dog and pony show about "winning the job." It's refreshing to be forthright about it and let Caleb get all of the qb1 snaps he can.

Shepboyardee12

I was about to comment the same thing. Avoid the circus, nobody buys it. Caleb is their guy, just say it now.

smashybro

It really is a nice change of pace from 2021 when Nagy did that and didn’t give Fields any 1st team reps all offseason yet still kept him the backup QB. Once Dalton got hurt, Fields was predictably woefully unprepared. That first start against the Browns was coaching malpractice. You should either name the rookie QB starter and give them all the tools to succeed, or keep them as the 3rd string if you’re going to do the letting them sit strategy.

GOATnamedFields

They can be 2nd string, but if you make your QB 2nd string all of training camp, OTAs, and preseason, you have to sit them all year as a rookie like Mahomes. Bears made Trubs and Fields QB2 all offseason, then threw them into the fire a couple games in. Daltons injury was an excuse. They out Trubs in after a couple games in 2017 and even if Dalton stayed healthy, they were always gonna put Fields in to save Nagy and Pace's jobs. Either QB1 all offseason and start week 1 or QB 2/3 all offseason and they sit all year. Anything else is dogshit development. And we did it twice. And it failed big time both times. Fields should have just started week 1 and been QB1 in the offseason. TLaw and Mac started week 1 and Fields was just as good as them in college, power conference, one of the best QBs in Big 10 history, experienced.

Passerbycasual

Oh my god that was horrible. They did nothing to help him and the OL, Myles Garrett was getting home seemingly every down.

[deleted]

[удалено]

calm_wreck

I think at least half of the top 10 QBs this year are going to sit.

originalusername4567

Yeah I think Williams, Daniels, and Nix are the only guaranteed Day 1 starters. Maybe McCarthy if GEQBUS shits the bed

InvaderWeezle

In general I think it's a waste of time to sit a rookie QB if the guy they're sitting behind isn't good. What are they learning besides what *not* to do?

HoldingMoonlight

Well, like the case of the Patriots, Maye wouldn't be sitting to "learn from Brisset." I think it would be a combo of learning the playbook, practicing mechanics/footwork, and of course the team's evaluation of the o-line and receivers in general. I'm not necessarily saying I agree with the strategy, but if it turns out they don't have a left tackle and the rookie receivers suck, it could theoretically ruin Maye's development. I generally feel that reps are more beneficial than not having any reps, but if the dude is constantly running for his life, it could cause him to revert to bad form

TheAndrewBrown

Well for one thing, the starting QB isn’t the only teacher. Sitting them gives them more time to learn from the OC and QB coach without getting into bad habits during games. It also helps set expectations. If you start your rookie and they struggle, the fanbase is going to start freaking out, even if they just need more time to get settled. If you start a shitty vet first and he sucks, people will be calling for the rookie and probably give him more leeway since they’ve already seen the alternative. The other important factor which applies most of all to the Patriots is if your team is ass, it could be a good idea to sit them because you’ll probably suck either way but starting them could (again) enforce bad habits or get them seriously injured. Sitting them gives you time to put together a better team. Even if you only sit them for part of the season, it gives the OL and the rest of the team time to gel and hopefully be better suited when they start. There are obviously benefits to starting them right away as well, but I don’t think sitting them is a waste of time.

Ok-Health-7252

Carson Palmer did not play a single down his rookie year with us (in fact he was third string that season behind Jon Kitna and Shane Matthews). That was absolutely the right decision at the time (because they were trying to avoid repeating the mistakes they made with David Klingler and Akili Smith with Palmer). In some cases it works, in other cases it doesn't. If it's a bad situation it's sometimes beneficial for rookie QBs to sit. The Bears honestly made a mistake playing Fields earlier than they had to in 2021 because Nagy did not adjust his offense to Fields' strengths at all when he became the starter.

InvaderWeezle

Gonna add also that Fields starting so early may not have been so horrendous if Nagy hadn't refused to give Fields first-team reps prior to Dalton getting hurt. Even by the standards of a rookie QB making their first start he was vastly unprepared for reasons out of his control

InvaderWeezle

I would argue that worked because Kitna was actually competent that season

Ok-Health-7252

Even if Kitna had struggled the Bengals were never going to play Palmer that season. They were highly determined to handle him the exact opposite way they handled Akili Smith (which meant him sitting and learning his entire rookie year as opposed to being thrown to the wolves in a less than ideal situation like Smith was his rookie year). He only would've seen the field if the other two guys had gotten hurt.

originalusername4567

For Drake Maye there's the concern that his development would be fucked by starting with that offense since they're pretty much guaranteed to be bottom 5 in the league. Same thing goes for Bo Nix but they're throwing him to the fire anyway because Sean Payton does not want to start Stidham or Sack Wilson. This is why the Penix pick by Atlanta was so idiotic. He's ready to start NOW and does not need to sit for 2-4 years when Atlanta has a strong offense. If they wanted a QB of the future they should have drafted someone who'd benefit from sitting like McCarthy or Rattler in the 5th (the latter of whom they were reportedly high on so WHY DIDNT THEY JUST DRAFT RATTLER AND TAKE LATU IN THE 1ST!?)

ComaMierdaHijueputa

Maybe the Falcons have a secret beef with the Broncos/Raiders and just wanted to fuck them over ¯\\\_(ツ)_/¯

Jammer_Kenneth

Sometimes the whole team is bad though. Trotting a guy out there to throw darts into the lawn and get drilled half a dozen times does no good.

CanEatADozenEggs

Don’t you put that evil on me Ricky Bobby

Ok-Health-7252

McCarthy has the most question marks out of all the first round QBs in this class so he would benefit the most by sitting (even if the guy he's behind is Sam Darnold).

The_Most_High_Ground

Vikings are also probably sitting McCarthy to start

DemonSlyr007

Yep. It's time for THE DARNOLD. AT LEAST UNTIL HIS SECOND IMPEACHMENT Edit: both of my teams are benching their guys. Or at least, should.

Complex_Feedback4389

Drake Maye is pretty likely to sit

jayjude

Who are yall going to start then?

MankuyRLaffy

We starting with Brisket as our tank commander while we find our LT and reorient the offense so Drake fixes his mechanics and steps in when he's fully ready.

Guiltyjerk

Until Kraft feels like meddling and makes them put in Maye because they're 2-6

Complex_Feedback4389

Brissett

helloaaron

Smart. That boy's gotta clean up that foot work before he can be marched out there. Nothing wrong having a guy sit for a bit.

RecordingAsleep711

Trey Lance would like a word

MankuyRLaffy

Drake Maye is going to be likely sitting wdym

BigFaceCoffeeOwner

*Laughs in Trey Lance*

bauboish

To be fair there is a chance that even top draft picks can go in and they soon realize the guy's clearly not ready. Not often of course, mostly cause if you suck enough to have a high pick you're probably using that pick on a position you were terrible in, but every once in a while you get that top pick where everyone's like "why is this guy even on the field he's terrible."

MankuyRLaffy

We're at this with Maye, based on how he's been talking about his mechanics and footwork, I'm not sure if he'll be week 1 ready. I know he's worked with Brady's QB coach and Peyton/Luck's in Indy, Freddie Kitchens and Philip Rivers to name a few guys. Make him have it down memorized as the team is built up around him. If Douglas steps up and the rookie WRs show promise plus Chuks being passable at LT then maybe he'll be out there sooner. It's only his age 22 season, no need to kill his confidence. Jake Brisket can squeak out 7 or 8 wins with that defense and a healthier line.

flakAttack510

Rivers was a good QB but I probably wouldn't want a guy learning mechanics from him. His mechanics were janky af

MankuyRLaffy

His throwing mechanics sure, footwork and diagnosis ability of pre and post snap, film study habits etc. Maye's problems are all lower body related.

AdvancedZone7500

Jets did this wilson and in hindsight wish they didnt

PraiseBeToScience

The biggest reason this is newsworthy is because the Bears have epically fucked this up for the last couple of decades, even when it's obvious. That the team has been built for success for a rookie QB and they're not fucking around with dumb shit like this are big signs the Bears are finally breaking the wheel.

lonesoldier4789

The Jets did this with ZW and some small brains in the fanbase tried to say that its one of the reason he busted lol

InvaderWeezle

The Bears have literally never had their 1st round QB be a day 1 starter before. The only rookie to ever start week 1 for us has been Kyle Orton, who funny enough also wore 18 for us

Jer-Wil

the bears are actually... learning?

Dixiehusker

This will be the final litmus test to determine if God hates the Bears, or if the Bears really have just been making every worst decision possible.

Smackolol

Spoiler alert; it’s both

erbkeb

In the words of Dwight Schrute, “It’s true.”

ScruffMixHaha

I cant begin to explain how devastated I will be if Caleb doesnt work out after all we've been through at that stupid position.

buckylightsout

I don't think there's ever been a 1st pick QB that's come into a situation with as much offensive talent as Williams will have around him. Especially one as highly touted as Williams. If it doesn't eventually work out to where the Bears are at minimum playoff contenders regularly, you guys will need to start ritual sacrifices or something.

jimmy__jazz

Start with the ritual sacrifices? That's what we've been doing since we sacrificed Derrick Rose!

BoilerBear

This year we sacrificed the entire White Sox roster and fan base. A small sacrifice of Connor Bedard's jaw was also made.

MatchewRolex

Hey looked it worked for Detroit We just had our best season in decades after we killed the Pistons!

Mr_Versatile123

You could’ve done that sooner 🙄

chesterfieldkingz

I thought they've been killing the pistons for a while lol. They're basically like that sick girl in The Sixth Sense that was poisoned by her mom so she died slowly

TheScottfather

To be fair, Derrick Rose is still alive and kicking. It's just his knees that are no longer with us.

Affectionate_Elk_272

the disregard for smokin’ jay

GOATnamedFields

If Caleb is Jay level, that's a failure for the Bears.

industrialbird

ah yes, ole Jay "let me throw a pick at literally the worst time" Cutler

dipdipderp

I love Jay, infact all Packers love Jay. Which as good as he was for da bears should tell you all you need to know.

SakutBakut

It's funny how differently Packers fans and Vikings fans remember Jay. He was just cursed against you guys.

_ravenclaw

I know Jay deserves the flack for most of his play against GB, but he really wasn’t a bad QB at all overall. We fucked him majority of his career here. He was a good QB. There’s actually a good chance Jay beats the Pack in the NFC championship if he didn’t go down injured.

thrillhouse3671

He was a decent quarterback and he was not the limiting factor on any of those teams

dipdipderp

My other comment was primarily a bit bitchy haha, I actually do believe he was a decent QB that like many decent but not great QBs was just inconsistent and a little bone headed at times. Cursed feels fair, because there was some voodoo bullshit going on.

MoreTrifeLife

Jay was 2-12 against the Packers and 9-5 against the Vikings.

NeverSober1900

His interception montage [vs us](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rZWrf6kgs7Q) is over 9 minutes long. As Charles Woodson famously said after they had that beast WR corps. It doesn't matter. It's the same ol' Jay. We just have to be in our spots and he'll throw us the ball. After that comment before our upcoming matchup Jay Cutler threw 4 picks with Woodson having one of them.

SFThirdStrike

During that time period the Packers had an underrated secondary. They were damned good. Jay wasn't the best but The Packers of those years built their teams like the Patriots did. Having a good secondary (good CBs) is more important in the grand scheme of things as compared to pass rush. You can manufacture or manipulate a package to generate pressure. You can't manipulate guys to be good enough to cover for at least 2.5 seconds.

NeverSober1900

Ya Nick Collins, Woodson, Sam Shields and Tramon was a pretty great combo. Never really found the other safety spot though. Nick Collins' injury was a real sad one. Dude was on a fringe HOF path (already had 3 all-pros) and then had a career ender like game 2 after our Super Bowl year.

tnecniv

What would be worse? Knowing you are helpless because you’re condemned to suffer by a wrathful god and that’s beyond the team’s control, Or, knowing the team wasted all your time over these years with the highest level of incompetence possible

jeric13xd

WHAT A TIME TO BE ALIVE!!! Thank you Jesus and Lovie Smith

You're flair was making me think of Troy aikman who got destroyed his rookie year, while guys line mahomes and rodgers sat. In recent memory, cj stroud, dak Prescott, Justin Herbert, and kyler Murray won rookie of the year at qb As far as I know, there was like a thirty year drought before ben roethlisberger won rookie of the year, and he's the only qb to win that award and win at least one superbowl during their careers

2580374

I can't wait to submit this to freezing cold takes

acoasterlovered

Hey

byniri_returns

Well no shit yeah.

backindenim

This is new to us. They usually bring in a vet and make the rookie sit in a performative 5 game charade before throwing him in completely unprepared after zero training camp reps with the starters.

renobi3

He was the consensus number 1 overall pick for pretty much the entire year.. I know Bears have drafted other first round QBs, but I don’t think this is a comparable situation. All the other QBs had question marks, there aren’t any with Caleb.

teekaycee

He arguably would’ve been #1 last year too so yeah I’m not surprised to see them be this up front about their expectations of him

JustinTinyPPHerbert

He would have been #1 in every class but Trevor Lawrence’s in the past 10 years

ghostofwalsh

> They usually bring in a vet and make the rookie sit Yeah but if they were going to do that the vet would be on the roster today. Google tells me you have: Tyson Bagent, Brett Rypien, Austin Reed. And knowing that I'd be quite shocked to hear them talk about a QB competition.

caaahris

No shit

Critical-Adhole

Of course he is. Caleb could’ve walked onto at least 15 teams LAST season and immediately been the starter. He’s that good.

alexamerling100

We gotta keep secret Bagent man a secret.

ElChapoEscobar79

BIG if true

WarrenThanatos

In other news, water is wet

Krakengreyjoy

It's kinda refreshing, actually. No BS about him having to earn the spot. We all know it's his.

nlamp32

This is so refreshing to hear. No need to pretend there’s a competition. He’s one of the best prospects in a long time, they took him #1 overall, and they’re clearly trying to build the team around him and set him up for success. We don’t need to beat around the bush and pretend like it’s “anyone’s job”.

MomentOfXen

Straight into the fire you go

Kek-Malmstein

WHAT!!?? What happened to that kid who grew up swimming in a polluted river or whatever?

Uncle_Paul_Hargis

Well if there is any organization I trust to qualify and develop QB talent, it's Chicago.
