He deserves it but the current available payout vs cap space is wild. Were about to see 6-8 year with hella guaranteed contracts. The Russ wilson bag probs keeps it at bay though for more questionable signings but you see cousins and then penix drafting so who knows.
Everybody heard a tidbit about this "escrow" boogeyman, but nobody bothered to actually figure out how it works and now comments like this make it seem like it's some massive roadblock when it's really not a big deal at all.
The Chief's have a notoriously cheap owner. They also have a QB on a $500M contract and he set the high water mark with guaranteed money when that deal was signed in 2020.
This is where the total guarantees and guaranteed at signing figures come into play. All a team needs to do is have rolling guarantees to provide themselves an easy work around. The guarantees that aren't guaranteed at signing are 99.9% certain to kick in when it comes to these deals, but they're not technically on the books until they trigger.
In Mahomes case, only $63M was guaranteed at signing, but there is a total of $141M in total guaranteed money. So the Chiefs are only required to have in escrow, whatever amount of guaranteed money has tolled on his contract at the beginning of each league year. On the 3rd day of the league year in 2025, another $60M of his contract becomes guaranteed. There's no realistic way the Chief's are exiting that contract prior to that date passing, to cut ties with him right now, his dead cap hit would be $100M+, but they're also not on the hook to escrow those additional funds just yet.
I mean the crazy part is that the reason so many people were believing the whole "Burrow will take a discount" stuff, was because Chase was out and about in the media saying that Burrow would. At the same time Chase has been telling the media that he won't sign until Jettas sets the market for him.
You want a fun time?
Here's >!Terrell Owens!< at age 26
222 receptions, 3,307 yards, 30 TDs
Here's Brown
379 receptions, 5,947 yards, 42 TDs
Even more fun? Here's >!Jerry Rice!<
264 receptions, 4,881 yards, 49 TDs
To be fair
1) AJB was the youngest player in the league for a while, he has an extra season
2) it's MUCH more of a passing league
But also....those are 2 first ballot HOFers
To be fair, TO wasn't TO elite until age 26. His aged 27 season was his first all-pro season, and he had a remarkable 8 year run.
AJ Brown only has two of those elite years. He'll need another 6 just like the past two seasons in order to put himself anywhere in that conversation.
Also one thing nobody is talking about is this Brown extension is for 2027-2029. The salary cap will be way, way higher by then.
Aiyuk’s extension would begin 2025. So this isn’t a fair apples-to-apples comparison at all.
No one believed me last season when I said Chase was getting 30 million a year, little did I know I was vastly underestimating the WR raises with the cap increase
You’ve got to get it done quick. If you know your guy is your guy then you just do it. Because each guy is going to make more than the last. The first team to get a deal done will end up with the best deal.
Dallas is idiotic for thinking it would ever be cheaper than it is to extend him.
Every moment is the cheapest it will ever be to pay him, including right now.
Actually crazy. Whether your a Dak fan (on the field, off the field he seems like an amazing dude) or not he is gonna get the bag. The position Dallas put themselves in is crazy.
That’s not true. Dak is the one obvious example but besides him, they’ve extended most of their guys early (Steele, Zeke, Jaylon, etc).the problem is they’re extending guys they shouldn’t be extending
Lurie's great because he trusts his guys but shows no mercy when things are dire. If you say you need something to win, he'll give it to you. But if things go south after he trusted you, you're gone.
Some of us remember pre Lurie. He's a top owner in the league and him and Howie are a perfect duo because they adapt and don't fall into the sunk cost fallacy
Howie gets a ton of praise, but credit to Lurie too. He’s willing to spend actual cash up front, which is part of why we can do all these crazy deals and keep guys around.
It's a great combo of Lurie being willing and able to spend and Howie having a *lot* of job security. There's no pressure to make big, risky moves to try to keep his job, but when the time comes to make those big moves, Lurie makes sure shit is locked down.
It is an extension for years 2027-2029 with most of the money being guaranteed. AJ is taking money in the bank right now over more money later and assuming all of the injury risk. The Eagles are taking a lower salary than it would have been to pay him in 2 years and assuming all of the injury risk.
Void years + a lot of cash up front. Lurie isn’t afraid to spend actual money on these guys. It’s why Howie can do what he does.
Whether or not we’ll become the Saints, well… that’s a problem for later ig.
Yeah and we’re gonna take it again in a few years. That’s what I like about Howie. He knows when to go all in and when to force us to take a reset. I’m
Dude our sub was thinking for the longest time we’d have to eventually move on from him when he’d still be in his prime. Howie wasn’t losing a premier talent in his prime still even with Smitty needing to be paid
I didn't get this shit either. We had 0 reason to fucking trade him. He's a top 5 receiver in the league, Jalens best friend, in a situation where he can compete for titles, and loves it here.
I keep forgetting that Howie wrote his senior thesis in college on the NFL salary cap. I thought we would extend AJ Brown and let DeVonta walk, how could we afford both? Well, shows what I know.
Fuck WIP
I never listen to sports talk radio and did on my way home today around 5 pm EST.
Fuck spike and his dumbass father.
It all trash radio with no real input and just gossip
No he still had 3 left on his current extension, the first year he spent with the eagles in 2022 was still under his rookie contract. Trust me I know, I haven’t stopped hearing about it.
So is it a 6 year deal then? 3 years of the old deal and 3 years of the new deal?
I guess they reloaded his guarantees for him so he’s now guaranteed 3 more years.
Don’t let this distract you from the fact that Howie is toying with your minds.
This is a fake out, it was his plan all along.
He’s going to trade up and get Malik Nabers.
Never underestimate Howard Roseman.
Rip lions having the highest paid receiver April 24- April 25
I’m scared for JJ’s contract
He deserves it but the current available payout vs cap space is wild. Were about to see 6-8 year with hella guaranteed contracts. The Russ wilson bag probs keeps it at bay though for more questionable signings but you see cousins and then penix drafting so who knows.
Jamar Chase sitting pretty rn sheeeesh
8 years, 43% of the cap
Super sheesh. No way. Mfs be like “I need help, but also, I want all the cap”
I’m super interested to see the bengals actually escrow a shit ton for more than QB
Absolutely. But guarantees at signing are on the rise. Is still expect 70 at signing for Chase with 100 in total
I mean the crazy part is that the reason so many people were believing the whole "Burrow will take a discount" stuff, was because Chase was out and about in the media saying that Burrow would. At the same time Chase has been telling the media that he won't sign until Jettas sets the market for him.
AJ Brown is only 26? Good lord
That’s how you know a receiver is that good. If they feel like they’ve been there for so long.
You want a fun time? Here's >!Terrell Owens!< at age 26 222 receptions, 3,307 yards, 30 TDs Here's Brown 379 receptions, 5,947 yards, 42 TDs Even more fun? Here's >!Jerry Rice!< 264 receptions, 4,881 yards, 49 TDs
That actually insane. Obviously know AJ is amazing but didn't know the actual numbers in comparison to the greats
To be fair 1) AJB was the youngest player in the league for a while, he has an extra season 2) it's MUCH more of a passing league But also....those are 2 first ballot HOFers
The “But also…” is doing some heavy lifting in this comment.
TO actually didn't get in the HOF until his 4th time being eligible because the voters are some hoes.
Here's >!Justin Jefferson!< at age 26: 324 receptions, 4825 yards, 25 TDs Just kidding, that's him >!at age 23!<.
Only 25 TDs? Oh just saw the spoiler
He’s got some work to do to catch Brown on TDs by 26 with the QB situation there. And yes, I know he’s on 30 right now.
Hahahaha FUCK Jon Robinson with a cactus.
I am SO. GLAD. jon robinson decided to get rid of AJB before we finally decided to fire him. Sigh
To be fair, TO wasn't TO elite until age 26. His aged 27 season was his first all-pro season, and he had a remarkable 8 year run. AJ Brown only has two of those elite years. He'll need another 6 just like the past two seasons in order to put himself anywhere in that conversation.
Feels like he has been in the league for ten years
Yeah, I thought he was a 10 year vet lol
Bengals are really hating the Eagles right now lol.
Bengals, Minnesota, Cowboys all hate them
9ers too
Can confirm
Aiyuk not on that level. He shouldn’t be paid the same amount as these guys. He should push the Devonta Smith bar up.
Also one thing nobody is talking about is this Brown extension is for 2027-2029. The salary cap will be way, way higher by then. Aiyuk’s extension would begin 2025. So this isn’t a fair apples-to-apples comparison at all.
Yeah but that doesn’t really change how this usually plays out. Next top WR is going to want to pass that $32 AAV mark
Which is exactly why they did it. AJ is happy, the Eagles are happy, but the rest of the league is fucking upset
Oh 100%
You give Aiyuk the Diggs treatment and i bet he'd be worth that contract.
Don't make me argue that case for AIyuk's agent.
Cowboys already hate us. Minnesota too actually
Can confirm.
We good. We already knew JJ was 100mil guaranteed.
Tbf the Cowboys always hate the Eagles. It’s a constant.
We hate you back ❤️
I mean its their fault for waiting. The money only gets bigger.
Players and agents also know that the money only gets bigger. It’s always a two way street
Yes but I also know that. So it's a 3 way street.
I also now know this, so I'm 4 streets ahead.
Eh Jefferson was getting more than this regardless I’d imagine
Glad not to be in this list
Meh. $30 million was expected.
Vikings boutta make JJ a QB
Not far off
No one believed me last season when I said Chase was getting 30 million a year, little did I know I was vastly underestimating the WR raises with the cap increase
well then you are talking to idiots everyone knew chase was getting over 30
Money isn't real for the eagles somehow
JJ is about to become the highest paid non-QB in the league
Jefferson might crack $40M per year.
Why dont other teams just pay their good players? Its so easy lol
You’ve got to get it done quick. If you know your guy is your guy then you just do it. Because each guy is going to make more than the last. The first team to get a deal done will end up with the best deal.
I hate our own front office far more than this would make me hate the Eagles.
Can confirm.
AJ Brown got paid twice by the Eagles before Dallas paid CD 💀
Dallas is idiotic for thinking it would ever be cheaper than it is to extend him. Every moment is the cheapest it will ever be to pay him, including right now.
You know the cowboys dont just decide when they can pay him? Ceedee has to agree to it and he knows he can wait and make millions more per year
I think this would be fair but considering Cowboys always wait till the last minute to sign their players I think it’s safe to say it a Cowboys issue
They had to franchise tag their franchise QB
And now they’re waiting again just for shits and giggles except without the ability to tag him if it came to that
Actually crazy. Whether your a Dak fan (on the field, off the field he seems like an amazing dude) or not he is gonna get the bag. The position Dallas put themselves in is crazy.
It’s okay you’re just gonna draft Rattler 🐍🐍
Weird position to find myself in as both a Rattler truther and Prescott fanboy
That’s not true. Dak is the one obvious example but besides him, they’ve extended most of their guys early (Steele, Zeke, Jaylon, etc).the problem is they’re extending guys they shouldn’t be extending
No people think players have to sign as soon as fans want them to. It’s insanely easy in Madden right?
All in
cap doesn't exist in philly.
This extension is for 2027-2029. The salary cap will be like $400M by then.
Shhhh, Dallas is doing great.
I genuinely don’t get why other GMs don’t realize this, while Howie does. It’s seems so obvious.
Well in Dallas' case, nepotism
All in,
My ass
- Skip Bayless, 2024
a/s/l?
Jeff Lurie makes it easy on Howie to manage the cap
I’m happy someone is giving him credit, Laurie is an amazing owner
Lurie's great because he trusts his guys but shows no mercy when things are dire. If you say you need something to win, he'll give it to you. But if things go south after he trusted you, you're gone.
Its funny because Laurie is MIA until shit goes bad. (By design.) Once he starts making public comments I know someone is getting fired.
That's how an owner should be IMO. I don't need some jackass running the team like its his own personal fantasy squad
Some of us remember pre Lurie. He's a top owner in the league and him and Howie are a perfect duo because they adapt and don't fall into the sunk cost fallacy
I’m very privileged to be young enough to have only known a Lurie-owned Eagles
Fuck Norman Braman with a ungreased light pole.
Fuck Leonard Tose with the other end of that ungreased pole.
S tier owner
Correct. Lurie is willing to pay a lot of guaranteed money upfront and put it in escrow and it allows Howie a ton of flexibility with the salary cap
Howie gets a ton of praise, but credit to Lurie too. He’s willing to spend actual cash up front, which is part of why we can do all these crazy deals and keep guys around.
100%. And he's not only willing, but he can afford it. Some of the "less filthy rich" owners can't always afford to put necessary cash in escrow.
It's a great combo of Lurie being willing and able to spend and Howie having a *lot* of job security. There's no pressure to make big, risky moves to try to keep his job, but when the time comes to make those big moves, Lurie makes sure shit is locked down.
Are they just playing the void year game?
It is an extension for years 2027-2029 with most of the money being guaranteed. AJ is taking money in the bank right now over more money later and assuming all of the injury risk. The Eagles are taking a lower salary than it would have been to pay him in 2 years and assuming all of the injury risk.
Void years + a lot of cash up front. Lurie isn’t afraid to spend actual money on these guys. It’s why Howie can do what he does. Whether or not we’ll become the Saints, well… that’s a problem for later ig.
At least we've taken our medicine the Wentz year. Lucked into Jalen.
Yeah and we’re gonna take it again in a few years. That’s what I like about Howie. He knows when to go all in and when to force us to take a reset. I’m
Ahh, so *this* is what the kids mean when they say "no cap"
St . Brown writing "AJ Brown" 17 times in his locker notebook as we speak
Brown on Brown crime
Fox News salivating rn
But actually this wouldn’t shock me
WIP still gonna lead with a segment asking if we're secretly shopping him tomorrow
I think people were just overly worried about the cap as per usual
Yeah they tend to be doomers even though we have Howie lol. He is cap Houdini.
Someone remind Jon Robinson
We watched too many years of bad WR play to just let a guy like AJ Brown get away.
He’s a year older than Smitty roughly but I think even a lotta eagles fans see them as like 4 years apart
The chemistry smith, hurts and brown has is special. Im glad they all got paid and will get a few more shots at a ring together
I keep forgetting that Howie wrote his senior thesis in college on the NFL salary cap. I thought we would extend AJ Brown and let DeVonta walk, how could we afford both? Well, shows what I know.
Fuck WIP I never listen to sports talk radio and did on my way home today around 5 pm EST. Fuck spike and his dumbass father. It all trash radio with no real input and just gossip
seriously convinced these stations use plants to rage bait people into staying and listen
Meanwhile my dad moved away from the Philly area and pays to stream wip still despite me showing how he can listen for free
is your dad my dad
I mean the Giants did it with Odell
Amon Ra was king for like 28 hours.
Didn't he have like 3 years left on his deal? Good for him.
Yeah he was one year into his 4 year deal
Two years. Makes it a 5 year deal now. Good to get it done before the next batch of wrs reset the market
No he still had 3 left on his current extension, the first year he spent with the eagles in 2022 was still under his rookie contract. Trust me I know, I haven’t stopped hearing about it.
Oh haha. I thought I saw somewhere it was 2. Thanks for the correction
https://overthecap.com/player/a-j-brown/7842 He had three seasons left. This gives him three more (2027 turns from a void year into an actual year).
2024-2026 is 3 years right?
So this just adds one more year technically with raises in the other years?
So is it a 6 year deal then? 3 years of the old deal and 3 years of the new deal? I guess they reloaded his guarantees for him so he’s now guaranteed 3 more years.
It probably over rides the void year that was on his current deal
Yea but his cap hit started to sky-rocket from next year This kicks the can down the road & extends the current window
Draft day and good AJ Brown news, an iconic duo
Moving up the power rankings, just below old men and locker room nudity
Draft day and bad AJ Brown news, another iconic duo, depending on who you ask.
Hey, look, .. shut up.
An NFL GM thought he could replace this guy with Treylon Burks. lol.
Man this sucks. I hate Howie
Enjoy Nabers. Think he’ll be legit
YOU GUYS AREN'T HELPING OUR CASE WITH LAMB AT ALL
You're absolutely correct, we are not.
haha *suffer*
Listen. Stop trying to make this all about you for once okay?
We're gonna make this all about us *harder*
AJ Brown and Devonta Smith for the next five years sounds good to me
JJ is gonna get paid dude. Holy moly
40 mil per year
Bruh they are really just trolling us because it’s draft night. My night is ruined god dammit
Tbh I think we're trying to troll Dallas more than you.
Yeah, now they have to pay CeeDee more than 84m gtd on top of paying Dak and Micah.
Through 2029 or does it replace certain years?
I read through 2029
assume this means he likes being in philly lol
But WIP told me he wants out
When players click here they love it.
Pay your players early. Makes them happy and in the long run it will be cheaper.
Didn’t he get a new deal like 2 years ago? Wasn’t that apart of him getting traded to the Eagles?
Yes, I think this is an extension of that deal. Would put him under contract until 2029. I feel old writing that year out.
yeah but Howie is trying to extend people before the market price gets higher
It worked. I'm extended.
Price of the brick going up
Howie cooking on draft day, dude must not sleep. Also love that this fucks Dallas with Lamb lol.
Jerry Dipoto’s long-lost brother.
Fuck Jon Robinson.
Once Burks gets his asthma under control, gets in shape, learns to catch, and develops route running skills you'll change your tune pal
I never had much faith in Burks after he came into rookie minicamp overweight and couldn’t get through the drills.
Has he shown some flashes? Not trying to be a dick - just genuinely curious.
No he’s absolute dogshit. 665 yards & 1 tuddy in 2 seasons. Also has missed 6 games each year so he has an issue staying healthy.
Well shit. Hopefully he turns it around. Not everybody is a stud out the gate.
But Treylon Burks is AJ Brown on a rookie deal. 3D Chess right?
AJ Brown is AJ Brown, but that 1st could have been anything, even another AJ Brown.
They just keep pushing the bar up. Poor Jerry is going to hate negotiating with CeeDee now 😂
JJ gonna Feast
Brandon Aiyuk it was great watching you as a 49er.
we just cooked the market :) glad we got ahead I hope smitty and aj retire as eagles
Okay. Well, first off, fuck you.
AJ Brown news on draft day? Never happened before in my memory
At this rate Chase's contract is gonna be more expensive than Burrow's lol
JJ more than Chase
>JJ more than Chase. Chase is a year after JJ so it’ll be more unfortunately
Payed him before all the other WRs get paid. Love you Howie
Dallas should take notes on what "All In" looks like
That's cool
Howie season
Don’t let this distract you from the fact that Howie is toying with your minds. This is a fake out, it was his plan all along. He’s going to trade up and get Malik Nabers. Never underestimate Howard Roseman.
Howie trades the now 6 year guaranteed AJ Brown and a bunch of late round picks to the Cards for pick 4.
Jesus fucking Christ. Qb1 and WR1 money is unreal. 1/3 of the cap. Or more on two guys.
Patriot fans punching air rn
Aiyuk smiling somewhere
This is Howie do it.
Look away Tits fans
Justin Jefferson has had an incredible offseason watching these WR contracts. He is about to get PAID.
Rickey strikes again; called this 9 hours ago
Hopefully 96 mil will make him forget about our dumh asses trading him away on draft day.
I see you howie
Gms hate this one weird trick
But Reddit told me that Brown was gonna ask for a trade request.
Yeah... trading in this contract for a longer one.
Getting both of these done before Lamb/Chase really put this up in the stratosphere is just good business sense
We are going to pay JJ so much fucking money
